moving, games must go
« on: March 29, 2018, 09:35:58 AM »
I officially gave notice at work this week. I told them my last day will be April 27, that gives me three paychecks in April and a month to get thins situation.

I am leaving Texas and heading for California. I am going to be needing to get rid of everything, PS1-PS4, Xbox, 360, Wii, GC, etc.,

I am even contemplating selling the Switch.

I am not going to post here what I have, but if anyone wants a list shoot me a PM.

I don't have much in the way of hidden gems but I don't have any shovel ware or sports titles, all quality top tier games for the most part. Kind of a picky shopper when it comes to games.

Basically the plan is to sell everything. I am hoping to sell local but I want to give anyone here a chance to pick up that one item they might be looking for first.

Also if ANYONE living in California knows of any openings in the news media, TV production, writing, or radio business PM me as well. I have some pretty good clips and I been building my relationship with pro-wrestler Sam Houston so I have ties to that family too (his family dynasty is pretty hard core)

ALso, I recently interviewed U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, the Democratic Challenger to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, that was a career defining moment for a journalist.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would repay your kindness with gifts.
This is not the first time I have moved across country but it will be my first time moving to California.

If it's a de-cluttering issue, I'd personally keep the Switch and maybe a 3DS just because of their portability and how easy they are to store.  If it's a matter of fundraising, I'd understand selling them off.

Any link to the Beto interview?  He seems like a genuine dude, which is a rare quality in that line of work.

Hi, Evan, sorry nope I don't have that game.

lolmonade, hmm we don't have a digital archive but I do keep a PDF of that issue. I don't know how to share it though?

I am officially sold out, I got rid of everything I was hoping to.

Update on the move.
I got an opportunity to take an on air TV reporter position at a TV station. I can't say where as it requires discretion but I can say it is my dream job in a city I would love to live.

So things took a negative turn. I got moved and the job wasn't going to happen. I ended up having to move back in with my parents which put me in a sort of spot where I had to withdraw back into my shell for the time being. I have made strides in my personal life but I have had to go back into hiding for now.

The job search has taken a dive. I have been scrambling to find anything in my field. I have two interviews scheduled for this week, but they are not close. The closest is a newspaper 2 hours from here. I will have to drive until such time as I can afford to move again. I left in such a haste I trusted my sister to clean out my apartment and I left all my comic books behind. She left them in the apartment along with all my books and furniture. I expected she would leave the furniture but not my comics. I had to beg her to save a single box of the trades and graphic novels, she saved everything except the Fantastic Four and the Tick stuff.

This move did not go as planned plus I sold most of my video games before the move so I am sitting here in the dessert in my ultra conservative parents tiny apartment with nowhere to go. I tried going back to my old job but they had me replaced before I got out here.

I been away just trying to find the motivation to keep going. On the positive side the podcast is turning into a success of sorts so there is that.

Oh no, that's brutal!   :(

I've had to hit the full reset button before, and there is no silver lining or "look on the bright side" that can be offered - somethings life just kicks you.

However, regarding motivation, getting out of your parents place and into your own should be pretty good reason to keep working to find new opportunities. You will, eventually. At this point there seems to be nothing (outside of resources) to hold you back from pursuing options that might seem too risky otherwise.

Hang tough, Steph.  Remember setbacks are temporary, even if they feel like an eternity in the moment.

What's important now is to know clearly what your goals are and to make a plan-of-action in order to achieve those goals.  I don't know the newspaper business all that well, but it sounds like you have good experience in the news reporting industry, so don't be afraid to bring a portfolio of examples of your work.

I've been in a business field for roughly 10 years, so if you want help with resume building, cover letters, questions on how to approach interviewing, don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks guys, I'll be fine its just a set back. I have been working as a freelance writer for several publications so I'm staying busy just not making the kind of money or getting the steady work I am used to.

I applied for something today that if I get it would change everything. I'll know more by next week I have several interviews lined up so I'm getting there.

What a difference just a couple days can make. First, I got a story published in the local daily newspaper. My first story ever published in a daily.

They paid me almost 3 times what I was expecting so that was nice too.

Second, I got a job interview lined up this week at a place I am qualified for, and confident I can get that would pay me enough money to make everything better. It's not set in stone yet but I am optimistic again.

On the video games front, I might be selling my Wii U to pay some bills. I figured I better sell it now while it still has some value.

Nice going! But I have a bone to pick:

What are you talking about here!? Wii U is the new DreamCast! The modern Saturn! The Virtual Boy's legacy! Its value will only rise! Scarcity always correlates with monetary value!

I for one plan to hold on to my copies of Nintendo Land and Star Fox Zero, and watch the value skyrocket the coming years. Bitcoin? More like, Wii Think U Picked The Wrong Investment!
I'm gonna be rich!

Interesting offer, but an Ouya is worth more. Plus it does more than pong. But the Super Pong goes for 40 dollars, which doesn't sound too bad.

I'd buy it if I had a job right now. I've been over shopping for someone who is unemployed lately.

Ouya sells for $65 on Amazon, but like $25 on eBay...it's never going to be worth anything, because it can't do anything that any other Android device in the past 3 years can do. I sold mine back to Amazon when they were offering like $85-90 for them a couple years ago.

I'm sure 20-30 years from now it'll be an interesting piece of Gaming lore and history that some rich 25 year old will pay $500 for.

I used to own an Atari Jaguar. It broke because I put the wrong AC adapter on it. Anyhow, we returned it to Tiger Direct and were given a $50 credit. It's now routinely selling for$300-$800. An Ouya is worthless now, but it has a good likelihood of being somebodies missing link. Especially for some future nerd in college 25 years from now.

25 years from now will people even be using Android? I'm certainly not using Windows 3.1. I'm most definitely not using OS/2 Warp.

I probably wouldn't sell it anyways. I am Smaug! A Dragon! Or just a hoarder.

I got a job interview with a bank. It's not exactly in my field but it's a step in the right direction. Things have certainly not gone according to plan. On the bright side moving back in with my parents means spending more time with my mom. That's about the only silver lining I have right now.

These last two days have been fantastic! First I had a job interview at a bank yesterday. It went well but the bigger news came after. I left that interview to check out a local job fair. While I was there mingling, networking and passing out resumes I came across the head of HR for the local casino, one of the largest employers in the area. We got to talking about my plans, my experience etc. Turns out she loves my parents, most people do. My mom tried to get me a job at the casino, surveillance but because I have family working for them it was a firm no.
However the hiring lady was impressed with my skills, my attitude and my moms performance so she offered me a job on the spot. A/V Technician for the entertainment division of the casino. They do banquets, concerts, dinner shows, etc.
She set it up as a seasonal position I could do through the summer to help me pay my bills and then in July/August when the radio station told me to check back it would increase my chances with them. She also said they do regular business with the radio station and would give me a very strong reference if I decided to leave.
It turns out the last person to do this position was the very same exact person who stole the job at the TV station I moved out here for. So that gives me much better confidence if I work with them it will give me the backing of a power house advertiser with deep pockets and a very big presence in the market.
That was only half of the good news.

My business partner decided the print newspaper idea was outdated so we are launching a community news blog instead. I will run it like a newspaper, sort of, but no print edition. I have a plan in my head of how to do this based on what I saw other news outlets trying and I think it should work for this market.

If I do it right I might also be able to get that same casino on board as an advertiser, maybe. I am gong to try to blend what I learned in traditional media with new digital media and see if there is a balance that works better than uploading a PDF behind a paywall.

It keeps getting better. We launched the website and it has already attracted a very positive response from the local community.

Even better, my sister worked for a car dealer and she reached out to her old boss. He has an opening on his marketing team and offered me a job on the spot. Now I went from begging for a job to having the option to play the field a little. Things definitely turned around unexpectedly.
