Pokemon is about to go through Dexit IV, and this one feels more like a Phantom Menace than a Rocky.

The first Dexit occurred in 2002 when Ruby and Sapphire overhauled Pokemon’s kludgy internal stat system to allow for female Pokemon to have the highest possible attack (among other changes) but also prevented the first two generations from crossing the Color -> Advance barrier. The second one came in 2016, when Sun and Moon did not track a “National Pokedex”, and the third and most infamous came in 2019 when Sword and Shield explicitly prevented about 27% (241 of an eventual 898) Pokemon from ever emigrating to Galar. Including a freaking Smash Bros. character in Greninja – and yet, Blissey remained. But eventually, all but five* Pokemon became permanently obtainable with just Switches, and two of them still have a chance to be available once Scarlet and Violet stop running events.

But the closure of Pokemon Bank means what was once two groups of Pokemon – those that appeared on 20th century hardware and everything else – will now be six. The originals, the GBA and DS, the two different 3DS generations that appeared on cartridges with no movement between them, the Virtual Console rereleases, and the Switch era. This creates a vacuum cleaner: it simultaneously sucks and blows. Because whether through omission or intent, there was never a way to transfer Pokemon from one generation to another on the 3DS that didn’t involve Bank or Pokemon Transporter. At least you had Pal Park in the first generation of DS games and the Poke Transport Lab in the Black / White games.

I still have my original Sapphire starter from 2003, though I think the date got changed along the way. I was able to bring Blair the Blaziken through Bank and then Home to Legends: Z-A, and earlier this year I gave her maximum investment. She’s now level 100, the pinnacle of power for a Pokemon, and I fixed up her effort values and gave her maximum stat potential + a beneficial nature for the moveset. I thought I might do that one more time with the best Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald starter Mudkip and even spent $TILT on replacing copies of Platinum and White 2 a couple of months ago. I guess now I have to speedrun this, alongside a bunch of other potential hunts.

I’ve built up somewhat of a “shiny living Pokedex” in Home – one of every species in its shiny/alternate color variant - and I’d like to stop relying on Pokemon Go to fill in gaps for me. There’s a lot of Pokemon, particularly of the legendary variety, whose recent appearances are “shiny locked”, meaning they have no chance to produce a shiny. This leaves me with a few options: Pokemon Go’s relatively inconsistent raid schedule (Mewtwo doesn’t show up easily raidable for four years then gets three runs in two months), resetting in an older game, or grinding out the Dynamax Adventures in Sword and Shield’s DLC – which takes 10-15 minutes to complete and doesn’t even guarantee me an opportunity to check. I think I’ll take my chances with the old game resets, thanks. But in March 2027? I can reset a wormhole in Ultra Sun all I want to get a shiny Articuno, but if it’s stuck on the 3DS...

I fully understand why Bank is shutting down, though. I did my transfer from Bank to Home on the latter’s opening night, and I don’t think I’ve stored anything since. Plus, there’s a lot of people whose waking dreams manifest in Bank and then get sanitized in HOME after the transfer, and 3DS online services got completely broken just before the eShop died – even if Pokemon wasn’t officially affected, there’s probably some unpatched vulnerabilities in the code of the 3DS games or Bank. Arbitrary code execution? Cool, a less painful way to get shiny Manaphy. REMOTE code execution? Nothing good comes from that.

You’ve probably seen the meme image that compares the target market of Call of Duty and Pokemon: the intention is the Pokemon market is a child and the CoD market a young adult, but the actual result is reversed. I was in the younger adult category, and even now that I turned The Ultimate Answer this past weekend I still hate that I don’t have time to take full advantage of Bank in the six+ months it has left. But Big Pikachu is still targeting the younger market, and 100+m copies of Home-compatible Pokemon games means they can probably take the PR hit. Lord knows if they survived the Scarlet and Violet launch tire fire to the tune of 20+m shipped in six weeks, they can handle anything.

Things were looking bleak for the eShops this week when this process began on Saturday, where it looked for all the world that the main releases were another Aksys / Idea Factory collab (Over RequiemZ - and yes, it is set in Oz) and the threatened DayZ Switch 2 release. Hekke grace, we ended up with a nice surprise a bit ago when the Switch 2 version of 1000xResist popped up on the eShop: more details here.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: A surprise double-drop of Lord of the Rings: The War in the North, and Everspace 2 made its way over.

One of the most critically acclaimed Switch games is getting a Switch 2 upgrade this week.

1000xResist has been listed on the eShop for release on Thursday (August 20) at US$19.99 or equivalent. Owners of the original Switch version will be able to upgrade for no cost.

The Switch 2 version promises a higher resolution and framerate compared to the Switch release. Publisher Fellow Traveller, in confirming the release, confirmed the game will have a launch week discount of 40% for brand new owners as well as teasing an announcement from Fangamer tomorrow: Fangamer distributed the physical version of the Switch release.

Pokemon Pokopia is building quite the userbase.

Nintendo has confirmed that the March 5-launched Switch 2 exclusive has now sold more than 5m copies worldwide since launch. The total combines physical (Game Key Card) and digital sales and is sold to consumers, as opposed to shipments.

In the last Nintendo financal results, Pokopia was the only first party Switch 2 game to exceed 1m shipments in the quarter (1.27m units) and its lifetime shipments were given as 3.68m: this only accounts for territories outside Japan as The Pokemon Company publishes the game domestically.

Pokemon Home is getting some much requested updates in the fall and an unfortunate update in the winter.

The Pokemon Company has confirmed a major update for October that will enable access to the Switch versions of Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green, with a reward for a full Pokedex of Celebi in its first access on Switch. The update will also increase the storage capacity for premium subscribers by 50% (from 6,000 to 9,000), and allow support for transfer of Pokemon Go Pokemon caught in the "Go Safari Ball" used during the annual Wild Area event.

The same announcement also confirmed the end of support for transfers from the 3DS Pokemon Bank to Home will occur on February 26, 2027 (10 p.m. ET on the 25th for North America) with the Bank and Transporter 3DS apps ceasing to function. The 3DS Bank app was free to store Pokemon from pre-Switch games beginning with the 3DS eShop's closure in early 2023, and was even maintained following the closure of Nintendo Network (online) in April 2024.

More cast details have emerged for next April's Legend of Zelda movie, including the film possibly serving as the final bow for a beloved actor.

A report from Deadline has confirmed that Sam Neill (1947 - 2026) will have a role in the film in what may be one of his final released works following his passing on July 13. Neill, who is perhaps best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, did not have his role in the film revealed.

Other cast details revealed today include:

• Uli Latukefu (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in flashback scenes of the NBC drama Young Rock) has reportedly signed a multi-picture detail to portray Ganondorf
• Yvonne Strahovski (voiced Miranda Lawson in the Mass Effect franchise, Serena Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale) has been tabbed to play Impa
• Dichen Lachman (Ms. Casey in Severance) will portray a queen (which one was not specified)

Nintendo has released its results for the first fiscal quarter (April 1 - June 30) of the fiscal year, and though it would seem to be a tough comparison to last year which had the Switch 2 launch, year 2 definitely got off to a better start in the profit / loss department.

All figures quoted in yen with a US$1 = ¥157.86 rate used to provide US$ figures for comparison only.

Financial indicators

Revenue: ¥517.813b ($3.28b), down 9.57% year over year.

Operating income: ¥142.596b ($903.3b), up 150.48% (note 1).

Ordinary income: ¥206.15b (~$1.306b), up 115.14%.

Digital sales: ¥132.7b ($840.62b), up 90.11% (note 2).

Mobile / IP revenue: ¥34.8b (~$220.45m), up 108.38% (note 3).

Hardware Results

Switch 2 shipped 3.82m units in the quarter for a new lifetime total of 23.68m units to pass the GameCube. It will likely pass the N64 (32.93m) during the holiday quarter.

The Switch shipped 660k units during the quarter for a new lifetime total of 156.59m, needing 3.51m shipments to pass the last reported number of the moving target that is the PlayStation 2. (Note 4)

New Software

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was the big mover of the quarter with opening shipments of 7.94m copies: this is already more than the 3DS version (6.73m) shipped in its lifetime which began in 2012.

Neither of the full-release Switch 2 games - Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and Star Fox - were noted to have shipped 1m units in this quarter, though Star Fox was only available for five days.

Catalogue Sales

Mario Kart World has expanded its lead as the Switch 2's biggest game, shippeing 1.36m units to stand at 15.39m total and an approximate 65% attach rate. Lifetime sales of the Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Party Jamboree have reached 1.15m, making it the first Switch 2 edition that didn't launch day and date with the Switch version (Pokemon Legends: Z-A) to ship a million physical copies. (Note 5)

There was no change in the order of the Switch top 10, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe shipped another 940k copies for a Nolan Ryan-esque 71.53m sales.

Notes:

1. Nintendo received its refund of tariffs ruled illegal by the US Supreme Court during this quarter, which were used to offset expenses and resulted in higher income figures.
2. This was 82.6% of software sales in the quarter: for comparison the highest quarter last year was 81.9% with the launch of Pokemon Legends: Z-A across Switch 2 and Switch.
3. All royalties from the theatrical run of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie were here since it premiered on April 1.
4. The shipments were 160k Switch, 180k Switch Lite, and 330k OLED: presumably the official total is rounded down.
5. Purchasing an upgrade pack for a Switch 2 edition goes into digital sales, and purchasing the game + upgrade pack digitally counts as a purchase of the Switch game since it can technically be used on Switch as well.

The just-wrapped Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Direct has laid out the stakes for the Heroic Games and some of the mechanics in play.

Returning elements from prior Fire Emblem games include a Three Houses-style multi-tier class system with promotion exams, Shadows of Valentia-like dungeon exploration, and character recruitment including the ability to bribe characters as seen in Engage. Although it will be encouraged to pick a specific main character path, it will be possible to switch between the four paths during the story if desired.

Story elements were also advised, including confirmation that the game's gender-choice protagonist will come in later in the story following a plot event and the reveal of the true villain.

Nintendo Music will add some Fortune's Weave tracks including the game's main theme later today, and Nintendo Today will add a new Fire Emblem theme tomorrow. A future article in the "Ask the Developer" series from Nintendo will also be available on September 15.

The next dedicated game Direct is going to deal with fortune.

Nintendo Today has confirmed a Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Direct will air tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT / 1500 CET / 11:30 in Newfoundland. The presentation will run for 20 minutes.

Thus far, the information we have on the September 17 release is a combination of two Nintendo Direct trailers and daily drops of characters in the Nintendo Today app.

On what should be a holiday week in Japan which will hopefully keep the news desk's weekend work to a minimum, there's a few familiar faces in the Switch 2 sections. As promised / threatened in the last Direct, we have Big Walk and Lies of P coming to Switch 2, alongside a couple of indie cross-platform games (without upgrades) in Montabi and Obakeidoro 2. There's also Parkasaurus from Atari, which makes two weeks in a row with dinosaur sims.

But of course, the big one is 300 hours of JRPG and probably growing in a few years in the form of Final Fantasy XIV. Finally, Nintendo players get to see what all the fuss is about (alongside a second, though discounted, subscription for those coming over from PC or the PS4). And we finally get Answers in full instead of its abridged version as seen in the last couple of Theatrhythm games. Note about the pricing: I'm quoting regional pricing for the Starter Edition, which is the one that gets you into the (insert free trial copypasta here): please check your local listings for more recent expansions.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: A Switch 2 version of LEGO Party with a free upgrade, Jurassic World Evolution 2, and a Doraemon Console Archives game which will probably sell better than I expect internationally.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: Elthead is a strategy game that indicates the menus are in English, and the screenshots bear this out. A tentative yes.

Expansion Pack-level subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online will be getting some lost media and some burnable media in the first two weeks of August.

The first update on August 4 will see the previously unreleased Zero Racers and D-Hopper come to the Virtual Boy library. Originally announced in January, the games will accompany the promised update to allow for color customization instead of the standard Virtual Boy red.

Following that on August 13 will be Super Mario Sunshine, leaving Pokemon Colosseum as the last of the original announced games for the GameCube library. The oft-reviewed by Nintendo World Report (as Planet GameCube) 3D platformer was previously re-released in the temporary Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection in 2020, with controls adapted to account for the lack of analog triggers on the Switch controllers.

The Pokemon Pokopia expansion pass announced last month has some new details and a first drop date.

A new town "Bubbly Basin" will be available on August 5, alongside a software update for all players that enables underwater exploration. The town will focus on aquatic (not necessarily Water-typed) Pokemon and building out an environment for them, alongside deep-sea exploration.

There was a time in preparing this week's listing that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the lowest ranked Switch 2 game by revenue - sadly, that was in the North American eShops where the rankings are based on revenue and the only part of the game listed for sale on Switch 2 is the upgrade pack. If the entire world were to change, and XC2 were to remain behind a g-d Truxton game in this chart, however, I would be most pleased. Also on Switch 2 and Switch this week: a pair of otome games based on the Prince of Tennis games and published by KONAMI of all people, Blue Reflection Quartet, and one of the first Switch 2 games to get announced after launch in Constance.

Not much awaits on the OG Switch beyond a reminder that ACAB may not apply to time-displaced animals but it definitely applies to Maple Leafs goalies.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: In a three Archives week, the cross-platform release of ARMADILLO RACING is the standout. There's also a Switch 2 version of SOMA and a fighting game based on a soon-to-be-crippled franchise whose Switch version will need languages patched in later. It turns out Final Fantasy XIV will arrive on Switch 2 early in August.

As part of a fan festival in Germany for the popular MMO, it was confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV would go live on August 4. The game's eShop listing confirms a file size of 117 GB, though it cannot be downloaded yet: monthly subscriptions will be required following a roughly 1 month trial period.

Currently, four packages are on sale, with the last three offering a 30% launch discount until August 12:

• A "Starter Edition" for $19.99, which covers the base game "A Realm Reborn" and the three expansions Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers + 30 days of play time
• The most recent expansion Dawntrail is available for $39.99 with a collector's edition offering additional ingame items for $59.99
• A "Complete Edition" for $59.99 combines the Starter Edition and Dawntrail packages including the 30 days of playtime
• A "Complete Collector's Edition" with all of the expansions and multiple bonus items for each one costs $139.99

The RPG we don't talk about is getting a Switch 2 edition next week, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is getting another -saga Blade in the package.

An overview trailer for the game has been released claiming the July 30 patch (October 1 for a physical edition) will run at 4k resolution / 60 frames per second docked or 1080p / 60 FPS in handheld mode. Brief footage of the Merc Assault mode was also shown.

As part of the package, there will be new outfits for Pyra and Mythra, as well as a new rare blade in Momo (originally from the Xenosaga series) who can switch their outfits as well as their elemental affinity. The 14-year old joins KOS-MOS and T-elos as reference to the prior form of Xeno- from Monolith Soft.

With a couple of months and an unfortunate Switch 2 price increase before the release of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, the character reveals have started to drop in the Nintendo Today app.

The participants in the Heroic Games are being rolled out seemingly in the order of which team they're joining, with the four named leaders introduced in the September 2025 Nintendo Direct going first, then seemingly the alternate captains (the Dedue, Hubert, or Hilda [good]* roles in Three Houses) and who knows from there.

But through nine picks of the draft, there's been quite a bit of information dropped about the characters - so we'll have your scouting reports right here. Do you want to know where the bow lord is? Anyone else think magic is everything?

All three regions in our tracking reached the age of majority in Switch 2 release count last week (Japan was over 20), and yet it's easy to argue that they're not as big combined as this week's major release. Splatoon Raiders blows out the single player mode of Splatoon, and at this point between the comics and the Direct we should all be well versed in how it plays at this point. If you need something a little bit more violent, there's the Prinny-fueled musou Disgaea Mayhem getting localized, or yet another crack at Final Fantasy X/X-2 (of course, no upgrade which was plenty litigated last week).

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: Part of that litigation was due to Star Ocean: The Second Story R. We also got the late Switch 2 release of Starbites from NISA, and another example of "free to play game with a Switch 2 upgrade" in Disney Speedstorm. The Archives had another Heracles game (not localized) and Taito's 1988 shooter Sylvalion.

Although the 2026 Pokemon World Championships are still a month and a half out, we already have details on the 2027 schedule and one of the usual Elite Four games is getting bounced.

The biggest change in the program is the removal of Pokemon Unite from the circuit, with a standalone World Championship event for the MOBA to be held in Japan in March of 2027 and qualification to be announced. Unite competitors were hit particularly hard with travel restrictions for the 2025 World Championships in Anaheim, CA due to current US government policies, though this was not officially given as the reason for the removal. With this, the 2027 Worlds will run three circuits: trading card game, video game championships (VGC), and Pokemon Go.

The Go tournament at 2027 Worlds will also have a new format, as qualified players will be placed in teams of three for the tournament. The announcement does not mention if the competitors will be placed into teams based on home country or if the draw will be truly random.

Despite the recent release of Pokemon Champions on mobile platforms, the 2027 series will require competitors to play on Switch or Switch 2.

For the second time in 72 hours Square Enix has shadow dropped one of its better received Switch RPGs on Switch 2, but is doing its previous buyers no favours.

A Switch 2 version of 2023's Star Ocean: The Second Story R was published on the eShop a short time ago for US$49.99 or equivalent. Web store links are down as of press time but it is available on console. As with prior Square Enix Switch 2 reissues, there is no upgrade option or ability to move a save over from the Switch version.

Neal Ronaghan gave the original Switch release high marks in his 2023 review: "Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a great remake of a less heralded PlayStation RPG."

Mario Tennis Fever is rallying support with a new free update.

The version 1.1 update is heavily themed around Super Mario Galaxy, with the addition of a new "Galaxy Court" which introduces black holes which randomly absorb shots - or players - that end up in range. Special matches using Prankster Comets from the Galaxy endgames are also available on the court, and there are new color options when playing as Luma.

Additionally, GameShare support (via GameChat) is now available.

It was eight years ago that Octopath Traveler released on the original Switch, and Square Enix has decided to observe the anniversary with a pair of controversial release strategies.

A digital version of Switch 2 versions of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II has appeared on the Japanese eShop today, with western releases scheduled for October 1. The Switch 2 versions promise a higher framerate and resolution, with the target appearing to match the PS4 version's 1080p / 60 frames per second settings.

As with the upcoming Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest XI S and Final Fantasy X/X-2, the Octopath releases will not feature an upgrade or an option to transfer save from the Switch version. (The US version is priced at $59.99 and the Canadian at $79.99.) As well, although physical versions are planned, they will use the Game Key Card format.

After a weekend of grinding out my perfect Mewtwo trio (and not having to appear in an advertisement to get it) it's an overstuffed week of releases already. For one thing, the Switch 2 is hitting double digits BEFORE the Archives releases for the first time since week 1 with 11 games (12 in Japan, though that is buoyed by the Monday morning drop of the Octopath Traveler duology the rest of the world gets in October, more on that shortly). There's a first party release technically (Fitness Boxing 3 NS2 edition, with the big one next week), the return of Culdcept, a couple of sequels in Heave Ho 2 and Tangle Tower followup The Mermaid Mask, DenshAttack finally gets out of the blocks, Annapurna drops D-Topia... and there's even a rescue from the VR morass in the Moss duology getting a solo release. Heck, we have five upgrades packs already, which might be a record?

The OG Switch gets some of the love too: the only game of the last paragraph that isn't multiplatform is DenshAttack.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: The tastefully titled Space Warlord Baby Trading Simulator, alongside an Archives release of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. And that appears to be playable in English.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: Harry Fox looks like a Japanese adventure game, and based on a video from friend of the column SeafoamGaming on our Discord it is. But the other deciding factor is that the game is maybe 15 minutes long?

Another mobile Nintendo game is about to end service.

The website for Mario Kart Tour has posted a FAQ page announcing the shutdown of the game on September 30, 2026 at 2 a.m. ET. The game's premium content - the Gold Pass and "rubies" used for early unlocks of content - have been discontinued as of today, though all players who play between August 5 and the shutdown will get the Gold Pass benefits.

The FAQ page confirms no offline version (a la Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp) will be available, but some of the courses were added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe via its Booster Course Pass.

[One of these feels way overdue.]

A new update for the Nintendo Classics Game Boy and GBA apps tonight has brought three new Game Boy games and a single release with two different games for the Advance library.

Game Boy

• Fortified Zone (1991) is a top down shooter starring a pair of mercenaries who have to navigate through maze-like environments. It was previously released on the 3DS Virtual Console in July 2011.
• Sword of Hope II (1992-96) is an early dungeon crawling RPG that previously saw release on the 3DS VC in 2012.
• Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (1994) is the major game of the update, as the only first party Game Boy game in the update and the first game to star Wario following his turn in the backdoor pilot Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. A side scrolling platformer with more traditional structure compared to the Game Boy Color sequels, it was also released on 3DS VC in 2012.

Game Boy Advance

* Dr. Mario and Puzzle League (2005) is, as the name implies, a combination of two Nintendo puzzle staples in Dr Mario and Puzzle League (similar to a Tetris and Dr Mario compilation on the Super Nintendo a decade prior) with enhanced visuals and new music. The Puzzle League portion is unbranded in much the same way it appeared in the 2003 Nintendo Puzzle Collection for the GameCube.
