There were complaints that your chocobo runs away if you dismount, maybe they should've added NPC chocobo riders that you can throw off their steed to get a new ride.

"There were complaints that your chocobo runs away if you dismount."

It stated so inside the manual.  (yes, I do read all my manuals before playing)

The complaint was that that's a bad mechanic, makes dismounting very annoying

Which is strange since that is how Chocobos work in Final Fantasy. They always run away as soon as you dismount.

I'm eight hours into this game and I still think it's quite fun. The combat is fun, especially since it doesn't happen too often. I really like the music, and the story is surprisingly intriguing. The characters aren't anything amazing, but they're given enough time to develop and have some personality. My main problem with the story is that these cool fights seem to be building up, and then people just duel in the cut scene and then you just wander around the overworld again.

BTW, Moogles are awesome.

How's the voice acting? The GameTrailers review said most didn't really feel right (their overall review said the game was good though).

Considering the state of voice acting and character development in most JRPGs, I'm not sure why the reviewers are singling this title out.

It sounds fine.  Better than dubbed anime, better than the Tales games (which have too many characters to deal with).

The voice acting isn't to bad. We've all most likely heard a LOT worse. It can be bit off in terms of delivery when you see the characters on screen talking to each other but especially when the camera is focused on their mouths.

Yeah, the lips are only synced for the Japanese audio track.  I think Sega's the only company to re-animate lips in a game when they localized Shenmue1 for USA.

Though sometimes even with Japanese dialogue the mouths still don't always sync up. You can expect it when you are watching a show or game that has an English or some other language dub track. However it's beyond annoying when you watch something subtitled with the original language and it still doesn't even sync up.

Played a little bit more of this right after a little bit of Silent Bill.  It's neat.

The in-game auto-camera does exist, and when it tries to work, it's pathetic.  I use a mixture of Ocarina and Wind Waker camera habits (i sorta miss the sound that the camera makes in Zelda when you reset the camera (lock-on), FFCC has no such sound, and the camera snap movement is slower), using both instant camera reset and the manual camera rotation.  It's easy to tell that Square still has no idea how to manage character cameras.  It's like they're making an N64 platformer for the first time.

PRO TIP:  In the Options Menu, you can make the Dpad camera move more smoothly by selecting "Soften."  It's stupid that it wasn't set to be the default, as I find it easier on the eyes.

I have a copy, came in the mail, but boy it's just sitting there on my backlog.

Game done.
To answer questions:
1. Voice acting is a mix of okay to not good often feels staggeringly flat.
2. The game alerts you that getting off of a chocobo makes it run-off, which is only annoying because you can't read signs while you're riding a chocobo.  Given the god-awful map the road signs are all you have.

Picked this up last week. At first (while I was coming to grips with the controls), I experienced the dreaded "not-excited-to-play" malaise that kept me from picking it up for a few days. But I got back into it this weekend, and started having more fun. It's definitely not a perfect game, but I'm more impressed the more I play. I think the fact that I'm starting to really get the hang of combat is making it much more fun.

Plus, Belle's hawt. ;)

I've played a few hours into this, up to the vacation like beach, with my roommate.  The additional player is only marginally fun, and difficult to get a hang of.  The camera isn't great.  The timed fighting areas is a little lame, only because if you fail, you have to wait around a few minutes, only to try again, just short of failing.

A lack of a decent map is annoying, we've been caught with no idea where we should go.  Where we are currently, the storyline really doesn't make great sense, and I think most cutscenes and places where the gameplay ventures from the standard "pick things up, throw them down" have been to establish character and setting, because the story has been nothing special.

Fighting new enemies, and the rare boss here or there can be a lot of fun, though.  Trying to make certain enemies react to certain things is what sells it.  The problem is, timers give you so little time to exploit these things, or even to toy around with them, it's just painful.

We'll play more later, but the game has moved to our backlog, honestly.  Who know what the order of that is, or when we'll have time to get to it.
