Some of the requirements included being a company with a strong vision of the future, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, a commitment to innovation, and diversified portfolios.
BusinessWeek praised the company for innovating with products such as the Nintendo DS and Wii console, leading to a 36% annual increase in its sales over the last five years. Nintendo placed ahead of tech industry giants Google (No. 2), Apple (No. 3), and Amazon (No. 17) in the overall rankings. Sony and Microsoft did not make the top 40.
The publication also listed what they consider to be the 50 most innovative companies in the world, with Nintendo taking the No. 5 spot behind Microsoft at No. 4. Apple took the top spot, with Sony coming in at No. 14. They cited Nintendo as being most well-known for its innovative products.
Nintendo rose up the innovation ranks in 2009, moving from No. 7 to No. 5 overall.
