Ideaman says that the controller shown in the leaked Rayman Legends trailer is not the final "updated" uMote.

He did not specify what changes were made though.
Quote from: IdeaMan
I'm in a good mood, so i'll drop a mini-bomb, k ?

This is NOT the final & definitive controller. The one used in this trailer isn't the "updated" model.

so besides what could be an outward facing camera shown in the  Rayman Trailer
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=37608.msg730117#msg730117

what else do you think could have changed?

Jokes on you.  That's not a camera, it's a really small touch pad on the back of the U-Mote (a la Vita).

It probably isn't since the NFC stuff doesn't need to have an edge area.  If I was placing it I put it smack in the middle.  I keep it away from the speaker and mic.

The way NFC works is by touching compatible devices/objects together or bringing them close to one another hence "near field." The Rayman Legends trailer shows people placing various action figures on the tablet controllers screen and having that character show up in the game.

****, I should have taken that bet...

Maybe its for the motion controls of the uMote. Take your Wii mote and look at the end of it, doesn't the part of the Wii mote you aim at the sensor bar look just like that? And since in the picture this is at the top of the uMote I reckon that's what it is.

I'm going to change my bet (no one had accepted it, so I can do that :P ) to now say that this is what it is. Its simply for the motion control aspect of the uMote. It detects the infrared of the sensor bar and that's how it knows where its aiming.

...Something just occurred to me. Given the apparent ability to scan figures and put them into the game, what if Nintendo uses that for the Wii U Smash Bros.? Makes sense, given the characters in that series are figurines come to life.

They could sell additional characters as figurines  for 5-10 bucks a pop. You scan them once, they're added to the game, and buyers get a nice little collectible. It's genius!
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

Considering Kid Icarus has AR cards I be surprised if that was not the case.

Yes- frighteningly so. Factor in having a starting roster that comes with the game and slowly releasing new characters in congruence with DLC and it could be the most ambitious and clever use of NFC for a console game yet- Skylanders be damned. The only thing that worries me about this idea is that Sakurai is the kind of guy who finishes a game and moves on- I don't see him wanting to go back to the next Smash Bro.s once he's completed what he believes to be a full product. HOWEVER- Kid Icarus pretty much utilizes EVERYTHING the 3DS has to offer, from AR cards to online, and I think that the next Smash Bros. will definitely do that as well.

The DLC can easily be handed off to another team at Sora.  I'm sure Sakurai would be okay with that since he actually finished the game.  This is just extras.

Well, I don't know. Assembling half the team from Kid Icarus and going out and finding the other half of the developers for this game might mean they can put in a lot of time and effort.

Speaking of Kid Icarus and DLC, weren't we supposed to hear something about that game recently, or was that just another figment of my imagination...?

Adding characters to Smash Bros is too big of a deal for Sakurai not to want to be involved with. The balancing, the moveset, maintaining the character's unique personality is something he probably takes a lot of pride in. I'm sure he'd want to be on top of it if characters were developed for the Wii U game post release.

uMote Gets Good Range?
« Reply #6587 on: April 28, 2012, 12:40:42 AM »
Was Nintendo being modest about the range of the uMote from the Wii U console?
there were the same way with the Wavebird back in the day, wouldn't surprise me if they were the same way here.

uMote Gets Good Range?
Quote from: wsippel
The latest pad (product id DK-DEV-V5) is wireless. Also looks like Nintendo uses Ni-Fi for the controller now (2.4 or 5GHz), so range shouldn't be limited to a single room - possibly not even just a single floor.

Now I don't know the specific source of the info, but I know wsippel is getting it from a reliable source. Likely official documentation from some place or another.

Would it be possible for someone next door house, or in the next aparatment, to be able to pick up the stream from my Wii U and be able play it on their own uMote? They most likely will be encrypted to work on their own system, or some kind of syncing process.

Most likely a syncing process. The same way that you can't use a Wii remote or other controller on your neighbor's Wii.

Wii U to "Street Pass"?
« Reply #6593 on: April 28, 2012, 08:30:08 PM »
Wii U to "Street Pass" like 3DS by using a "Gamer Card"!?
it's a small Tomogotchi like device that houses your Mii and collects other Mii's that you pass on the street...
http://www.dualpixels.com/profiles/blogs/rumor-wii-u-to-feature-revolutionary-nfc-gamer-card
Quote
Nintendo had added a very important concept to the gaming industry with Nintendo 3DS's Street Pass feature. Knowing that the guy sitting in the next car of the train you're in, or the kids playing in the park are also gamers on the console of your choice will expand the amount of allies and foes amongst your personal gaming scene. The NFC feature of Nintendo 3DS (Street Pass) will return on Wii U integrated with the Nintendo network according to our source industry source Geno.

Earlier today, the NFC functionality of Wii U was previewed in a leaked Rayman Legends trailer that showed Ubisoft character action figures being migrated into the game by simply sitting them on the Wii U tablet display. We've gotten word that the tablet won't be the only NFC device featured with Wii U. According to Geno, a small device that's comparable to Pokemon's pedometer (seen with Heart Gold and Soul Silver) will accompany Wii U to "Street Pass" gamers everywhere. This small device can be carried inside a pocket or can be clipped upon one's waist. The device currently has no name but 3rd Parties have nicknamed it the "Gamer Card". It's a small low res color LCD device that shows an image of your Mii and a few stats about you. The device will gather the Nintendo Network profiles of the people you come in range with allow you to play games and communicate with them via Wii U. The slogan for the device is "When you walk back from work or school and log into Wii U you will have met new friends and even more enemies."

That will be great as long as they don't limit it like 3DS where I've street passed the same person about 7 or 8 times now and am no closer to figuring out who it is or where I passed them at since I haven't been able to communicate with them (am I missing something?)

If you can pass someone and then automatically communicate with them when you get back to your Wii U without having to exchange anything other than a message back and forth (like bump for the cell phones where you exchange contact info by bumping phones). Then this is really good news.

Whoever's going to E3 needs to write down all of these awesome suggestions and mention them to Nintendo guys. Or just slip it in their pockets when they're not looking.

It's not bad; we're just giving them a nudge in the right direction.  ;)

I would like something the size of a credit card so I can just put it in my wallet.

something like this?

Quote
The ThinQ pedometer from Sportline is about the size of a credit card (3mm thick) and easily fits into your pocket or even your wallet giving you discrete tracking of your steps, distance traveled and calories burned. It also houses a sports timer and comes in colors of blue, orange or green, retailing for about $35.

only with a gba quality (low rez color) screen

Why not just use a synced 3DS? Do we really need more devices to worry about charging or losing on us?

Even better, why not have an app on our phones? then I can sync it with my 3DS and my Wii U later without having the added bulk in my pocket for the majority of the day.

I am very interested in this. :)

I think that syncing a Wii U account to a 3DS is definitely going to be possible, and these items will work in tandem with one another, really. They are already pushing connectivity with the Wii U and 3DS, so I don't see why these devices wouldn't be able to interact. Plus, transferring the friend data I already have on my 3DS would be very nice and time-saving.
