Title: The Fast Food Thread - Would You Like Posts With That?
Post by: Khushrenada on November 08, 2010, 09:02:01 PM
All this fast food talk has got me curious. If you can only choose one meal from each fast food restaurant, what would it be? For the sake of extra fun, you can choose one item from the active menu and an item that is defunct or only appears for a limited time each year. And no, I'm not doing a rate the last food you ate thread.

My choices

McDonald's

Active - McChicken (see The McRib is Back thread)

Defunct/Limited - Pizza. McDonald's has a great habit of seeing what people aren't buying at their restaurant and then offering it for awhile to try and get people to fight the competition. They've done it with salads and submarine type sandwhiches. These often fade pretty fast. In theat vein, one thing they offered in the early 90's was pizza and it was actually pretty good. I remember they had a pizza Happy Meal and I loved it. While most of the other pizza offerings soon disappeared, the Happy Meal/Individual size lasted awhile longer until also fading into obscurity. I wish I had ate more of it while I could.

Wendy's

Active - This might be the toughest on my list because all their offerings are gold. It comes down to the Spicy Chicken or Bacon Deluxe Double and I'm going with the Bacon Deluxe Double because it is a more hearty offering. This is a bit of new thing. Normally I always got the Double Classic but I really like the Applewood Smoked Bacon Wendy's uses. I never thought bacon added that much to a burger to be worth the extra price it usually is but when I tried the Bacon Deluxe Double, I haven't looked back to the Double Classic yet. It is the most common thing I order from the menu these days.

Defunct/Limited - Bacon Mushroom Melt. I can only dream that someday it will be a regular menu item. Until then, I'll just have to keep stocking up on them for the limited time they are offered. That melted cheese sauce. Mmmmmmmmm.

Quiznos

Active - Another tough choice since I eat here regularly and love a lot of the subs. But if I had to say there was one supreme sub, I'm going with the Beef and Swiss Melt. Exquisite. Especially when winter rolls around. That sub keeps a man sane. I might have gone with the Chicken Carbonara since both subs use the Alfredo sauce but in the past couple months, Quiznos changed their chicken so that it has some herbs in it and it throws off the taste of their chicken subs. So, stand tall and proud Beef and Swiss Melt

Defunct/Limited - I could spend a lot of time on this one. There have been a lot of subs that have come and gone. While I'd like to name 6 or 7, it comes down to two, The Buffalo Chicken and the Roast Beef Dip. As much as I like spicy food, I'm going with the Roast Beef Dip for two reasons. 1. It was tasty! It was freakin' good. 2. The sub used a French Onion sauce or something that I liked to use for the Prime Rib & Peppercorn Sub instead of the peppercorn sauce they use on it. So, for making two delicious subs from one, Roast Beef Dip is most deserving of being reinstated to the Quiznos menu.

And now a bunch of restaurant that I can't think of anything defunct/limited that I would want or remember so I'm just sticking with the active portion.

A & W

Active - Papa Burger. I love mustard on burgers.

Dairy Queen

Active - Original Double Cheeseburger. The mustard, cheese, pickles, and ketchup mix so well with the hamburger and cause a taste high.

Burger King

Active - Steakhouse XT Burger. I'm really not a fan of Burger King. I don't like their fires and I've never cared for the Whopper. But I tried this recently and I'm sticking with it. There is a bit of a weird taste to their BBQ sauce but I can live with it and doesn't completely ruin the burger but I do wish they'd at least fix that.

Taco Bell

Active - Cheesy Gordita Crunch with Supreme Fries. For people who don't think Taco Bell does a good job of making Mexican Food, they nailed it with this meal. Any argument made against this offering will fall on deaf ears to busy chewing down another Gordita Crunch.

Subway

Active - Roast Chicken Sub. Rule #1. Don't get your sub toasted at Subway. They don't know how to do it. #2. Order the Roast Chicken. It doesn't matter what veggies you use, it will taste great. Heck, I'll just get the works most of the time. Just make sure you get the right sauces to complement the chicken. Sweet Onion and Honey Mustard. You can add Mayo if you want put Salt and Pepper will be enough with those two. I guess you could grab a couple cookies to complete the meal. 1 Chocolate chip with M&M's and a White Macadamia Nut should do just fine. You can thank me now.

Red Robin's

Active - Maybe not fast food but with all this burger talk, I just had to mention them. The Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Burger is one of the ultimate burger experiences. It starts out slow as you mouth learns the different components of the burger. But at the halfway point, the mouth can't keep up from the flavor overload and at the end, you are having a high from your burger. Sit for 10 minutes afterwards to let your senses return while the flavor slowly fades to memory.

Pizza Hut

Active - One last mention off the top of my head. I do like Pizza Hut pizza. It's best if you eat in and get it while it is greasy fresh. That said, it's not my number one Pizza choice. That's Panagos. However, what is great is the pasta they've been carrying for a good year or so. I love their Creamy Chicken Alfredo. What a great lunch. I do love pasta. What's a bit unusual compared to a lot of other Alfredo offerings by other restaurants is that they put on a lot of cracked black pepper in the sauce. Surprising at first, I've really come to like it a lot. Good job Pizza Hut.

So, those are my choices. Being in Canada, we don't have all the restaurants you have in the states like In N Out Burger or WhiteCastle. But don't let that stop you from mentioning them if you want to. I'm curious to see who's tastes we agree with and who we differ from.

Mcdonalds
Standard Plain Hamburger, just pickles, onions, and ketchup.

Wendy's
Junior Bacon Cheeseburger
I used to work at Wendy's and yes the meat is real, your cook is often covered with blood. Things are kept meticulously fresh and that's why its better.
and if its there the Jalapeno Double.

Quizos
Chicken Carbonara, its sad to hear that they may have changed up the flavor since it was so right.

Burger King
um....yeah im not a big Burger King Fan...um I'll just get a kids meal.

Dairy Queen
Oreo Blizzard....but im semi-lactose intolarant especially if i eat ice-cream...so how about a Strawberry Limeade

Panda Express
Orange Chicken, but im sick of Panda Express.

Tokyo Rice Bowl
Teriyaki Chicken/w rice

Yokohama Rice Bowl
Yakitori Chicken/w rice

Taco Bell
Chicken Grilled Stuft Burrito

Mr. Gs- yeah you don't have these where you live. Bean and Cheese Burrito, 12 rolled tacos

Subway
Cold Cut Trio..im not sure what they call it now, but ham and turkey with swiss cheese and then add olives, mustard, mayo, avocado, and bacon.

Pizza Hut
Pepperoni Pizza, sure you can put a lot of things on a pizza and i'd eat it, but I prefer the classic.

In N Out Burger
Double Animal Style

Jack in the Box
I stopped eating there, their food is just too greasy, but when I did I'd eat a Sour Dough Jack

Carls Junior
Same as Jack in the Box, but actually i never liked Carl's Junior ever.

The thing I would prefer to eat in most all situations
A Lamb Kabab or a Gyro, or Sushi

Favorite Sushi
Unagi, followed by las vegas and volcano rolls, followed by dragon rolls, always accompanied with an Uni Shooter.

When I go out I'm all about value. You have to know how to get the most for your money at these places.

McDickerson's - McDouble meal with a jr.chicken on the side. This costs about 7 bucks (which is less than a big mac meal) and then you take the jr.chicken and put that bad boy in between the patties in the mcdouble. I like to call it the McGangBang and that's what winning looks like.

A&W - had to eat here all the time in university because it was on campus and it took debit... $4 for two mamma burgers was a pretty good deal.

Subway - another university favourite. You can't go wrong with a $5 footlong meatball sub.

Quiznos- When they had the $5 footlong beef and cheddar I was all over that. Since they took it off the $5 menu I have switched to the ham and swiss or meatball sub.

Pizza Pizza - This is clutch because it's open late and it's good to have an option other than Dickerson's. Usually me and my friend will get plenty for $20. That's 10 wings, 3 topping large pizza 2 dipping sauces and 4 cokes. A little more expensive than usual, but you get a lot more and I'm guaranteed to be full.

I've got a couple other places, but they're local joints so unless you live in toronto they're no good for this thread. I'm always looking for places with good deals on food, I love food.

I think you should still be able to get the Beef and Chedder. There are a few menu options I can still ask for and get at my Quiznos even though they are not on the menu. I don't see why they couldn't make this. It's a simple sub and they would still carry all the ingredients. As for the Ham & Swiss, ask for it with Honey Mustard instead of Mayo. The taste difference is phenomenal. Quiznos ham and their honey mustard sauce blend so well together.

All these would be the Canadian version of said chain but I'll put a few American exclusives at the bottom.

McDonalds: McChicken

Wendy's: Used to be Big Bacon Classic but it's been replaced by the Bacon Deluxe which I don't like as much.  It's more or less the same thing only it costs a lot more.  I've been getting the Classic Single recently just because it's affordable.

A&W: Mozza Burger though I rarely go here because the prices are too high.

Burger King: Whopper

Dairy Queen: No favourite.  I don't go here much.  When I do I try to go for any promotional deal if there is one.

Quizno's: Tuna sub.

Subway: Pizza sub.

KFC: I go if there is a deal and usually just get the Original Recipe.

Taco Bell: I hate this place yet somehow I end up there once in a while.  I usually get the basic tacos and then feel sick.

American exclusives:

Jack in the Box: Sourdough Jack - BEST FAST FOOD BURGER IN THE WORLD

Carl's Jr.: Famous Star

In-N-Out Burger: Double Double

Only place I eat at on this list Taco Bell, and I always get 2 Fresco crunchy tacos and a chicken burrito. I don't think Quizno's should be on the list though, or subway really. They don't have fryers, everyone else on there does.

Oh man, I was thinking about McDonalds pizza just the other day.  Sure wish they still offered it!

Fast food isn't my thing.  When I do eat out, my preference looks like this:
(1)  Arby's as long as they are offering 4 junior roast beef sandwiches for $5!
(2) Dairy Queen is good for either two double cheeseburgers and a blizzard, or the garden salad with chicken and bacon
(3) Quiznos has several great subs
(4) A&W root beer is so good in a chilled mug that it makes the Double Mozza Burger worth ordering (even though it feels terribly heavy after finishing)
(5) Burger King makes awesome chocolate milkshakes... but nothing else really worth ordering.
(6) Wendy's makes a great spicy chicken sandwich

Pizza might not really count as "fast food", but Pizza Delight restaurants out east are incredible and beat the pants off Pizza Hut any day.  When we moved to Toronto, that was the only food that my wife felt really bad about leaving behind.

At burger places I generally get two of their standard hamburgers (no cheese). At Subway I almost always get a footlong Buffalo Chicken (non-toasted, but the chicken warmed up) on Italian, with no cheese or vegetables, just ranch dressing.

I don't each much fast food in comparison, and I usually mix things up with each visit. Two national chains I do often go to are Quiznos and Subway.

At Subway I almost always get a foot long Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki or a foot long spicy italian. I do get them toasted.

Quiznos, I like to try all there sandwiches, but I like the Chicken Carbonara.

I'm suprised Mop It Up hasn't posted in this thread chastising our eating habits.

McDonalds: Edible, but not really enjoyable anymore.  The Fries, a chicken sandwhich (McChicken or Crsipy) is probably what I would order.
I also used to be a steak egg and cheese bagel guy & I also loved the McGriddles. Do they still serve those?

Wendy's: Don't eat here often. Their fries are good, but you have to salt them. Baconator was pretty good too.

A&W: Never really tried their food, but they are always paired up with a KFC. Their food on the men always look so generic and uninteresting.

KFC: Soo greasy, but $1.99 bag lunch on Tuesdays can't be beat. (2pc chicken and a buscuit - $1.99). Mash & gravy eaten with potato wedges is usually how I do it. popcorn chicken is off the hook too.

Burger King: I like the Triple Stacker. I've tried to order a Double Stacker made with Whopper Patties. They wouldn't do it. They suggested a Double Whopper with Stacker sauce. I agreed... they still wouldn't do it. Have it my way my ass.
Crossandwiches used to be pretty good too. Haven't had b-fast there in a while.

Dairy Queen: I haven't eaten here is decades. I've stopped at one 3 or 4 times over the last 4 years, but never ordered anything,

Quizno's: Steak subs. salads are good too. I will easily spend $12+ in here and be completely satisfied with my decision afterwards. Also love their Broccoli Cheese soup.

Subway: such a fucking rip off. Where is the freaking meat? If I wanted to have a salad sub, I would have ordered that. where is my meat? False advertising at it's worse.
me - "I want the sandwich in the picture"
them - "This is the sandwich in the picture"
me - "where is all the meat?"
them - "you have to order extra meat for it to be like that"
me - "...." walks out and goes to quiznos.

but seriously, The Hot Pastrami. it was soo good.

Taco Bell: #3 all soft(3 taco meal). Love anything supreme, but nothing with that god awful nacho sauce. There is just something about the sour cream here. Grilled Stuffd burrito is also pretty good.

Jack in the Box: This is 3am food. This is Post Drinking food. This is the best damn fast food you are ever gonna have at 3am while drunk.
Sourdough everything. 2 tacos for a buck. everything is perfectly greasy for that alcohol coated stomach. My favorite for a long time was the Ultimate Bfast Sandwich on sourdough.

Carl's Jr.: Mushroom Portabello Burger. I love it. Chicken Parmesan Sandwich was pretty good too.

In-N-Out Burger: I don't get the love for In N Out, especially not Animal Style. I don't eat here. twice was enough for me to make up my mind.

Chipotle's: Mexican spot owned by McDonalds.... surprisingly good, but too damn expensive. I can find way better authentic Mexican for little more than half the price.

El Polllo Loco: I haven't had anything here that I have ever liked. ever. none of it was terrible, it's just that none of it was all that great.

Popeyes: Good chicken, but their crispy is a little too dry and crispy on the skin. If only I could mix KFC and Popeyes into one chicken place. Mash & gravy here is good too. better than KFC's gravy.

Del Taco: Havne't had too much from here, but I prefer Taco Bell tacos. The fries from here are actually not bad either. have not tried a burger, but the burritos(while not bad) left me wanting to go across the parking lot to Taco Bell instead.

New York Pizza Xpress: Individual pizza wasn't bad, but I'd much prefer a full size. the chili dogs looked pretty good, but I didn't try them. I've only been there once, and this is the only one of it's kind that I've ever seen.

Wing Stop: chicken wings to go. I liked most flavors, but this just seemed too expensive for what you got. It is good, and you can mix and match all you want, but to leave there completely full and 100% satisfied, I just think I might have to spend more than I want.

------------------------------------

Tommy Burger (LA Exclusive): OMG. Chili everything. Chili Burgers, Chili Dogs, Chili Fries. It's all so damn good, especially after going out that night. I've only had it a few times (because I don't live in LA) but I would pick this over JntB if I had the choice.

Arby's: I haven't seen one of these in so long.... unless you count the one I saw when I was in N.O. (or was that a Hardees?). Either way I no opinion since I can't remember ever eating there.

Hardees: same as Arby's. Do these even exist anymore?

Did I forget anywhere?

Also keep in mind that almost all of these that I mentioned (above the dotted line) is for the most part, right next to each other. I could literally walk from one to the next. I could hit most of them from the other one with a burger patty if I tried.

haha... hey BnM you need to make sure you give the people working at Wendy's **** for not salting them. They have a big salt shaker for doing that, by the end of the day the fry station is Briney. Also, what time do you normally go? Best time is noon and 5pm, thats just when everything runs the smoothest. If you get there at 2 or 3 make sure they give you fresh stuff.

Hardee's still exist in North Carolina and Virginia. Maybe in Pennsylvania and Ohio too.

Arby's is still all over the East Coast. I see them from Ohio on to Washington DC.

No one has tried Chic-fil-a yet? Supposed to have the best chicken nuggets, they use actual chucks of meat, not ground up processed pieces.

Five Guys > In N Out.

FACT.

Five Guys is fucking delicious but for price of one of their burgers I can get five dollar menu items at McDonald's.  McDouble + Drink (small is fine with free refills!) + Fries + Nuggets + Parfait for the same price of one burger with no drink or sides or anything?  Honestly it's a close call but since I have a hard time even eating that much McDonald's in one sitting I end up almost always going with the value menu.

God, same with Quizno's.  The chicken carbonara is tits but I'm too cheap to ever get it. Same with Subway, too; the five dollar footlong sounds like a good deal but their sandwiches are always so disappointing that it's still not worth it.  Four Arby's sandwiches for five dollars is...more than my body can handle.  I have never felt anything close to good after eating Arby's.

Anyway, every once in a while I fit Five Guys into my budget and I always get a burger with jalepenos, grilled onions, ketchup, hot sauce, and last but not least that incredible cheese.  Seriously I don't know what kind of **** they put in that cheese but it's delicious.

Chick-fil-a:  I love Chick-fil-a, and there are a lot of them around where I live.  Their Spicy Chicken Sandwich Deluxe is pretty awesome.  Also, every year during the Nov. - Dec. holiday season, they serve a delicious Peppermint Chocolate Chip Mint Milkshake, which is the BEST...MILKSHAKE...EVER.  I haven't been by their yet, but I've been jonesing for one since a friend of mine posted about it a few days ago.

We take my 3 year-old there frequently when we're eating out; he seems to prefer their chicken nuggets.  Their toys/books that they give with the kids meals are also pretty nice; it's not very well-known, but you can trade an unopened toy back in for an ice cream.  We do that sometimes when Micah already has the book they've given out.

Nothing But Noodles:  A little too expensive, but I love their Southwest Chipotle...it consists of fettuccini pasta in a roasted pepper cream sauce, mixed with fresh red bell pepper, chipotle and onions.

Donato's Pizza:  They have the best Hawaiian Pizza I've ever tasted.  I think it's because it includes nuts and is sprinkled with a hint of cinnamon.

Quizno's:  Some friends of mine and I have been eating lunch there for years.  The manager even gave me a free sub on my birthday recently.  My favorites include the Baja Chicken Sub and the Black Angus Sub.

We have the usuals, McD's, Burger King, Hardees, Arby's, but to be honest, I don't frequent them anymore.   I used to love Arby's, but no one else I know (including my family) seems to like it.  I still grab a Jamocha shake every once in a while.

Also, just because a place doesn't have a fryer does not make it not a fast food restaurant. As long as its a chain of restaurants, and the food is made in a timely manner, and the staff is made to wear undignified uniforms than it is a fast food restaurant. Also, add the minimum wage pay to that list too.

Wouldn't the restaurant simply need a drive-thru window in order to be classified as "fast food"?

Thankfully, I can't even recall the last time I ate at a fast food joint. Cooking your own meals is not only cheaper, but much healthier!

I'll have to check out the Quiznos value menu.  I generally only go there a couple times a year and I always get the chicken carb so I don't really pay attention to the rest of the menu :P

This thread reminded me of a trip I took over the summer to King's Island just outside of Cincinnati (great coasters by the way, although I am eternally pissed that I'll never get to try out Son of Beast).  On that trip I went to Skyline Chili and Graeter's ice cream (both of which fit the perm's guidelines for fast food :P) and both were awesome.  Skyline was very good but I'll admit that it was more of a novelty than anything (fast food chili? drive thru AND wait staff??).  Graeter's on the other hand...holy ****.  It was bar none the best ice cream I have ever had.  I ordered blueberry and peach cobbler, and then went back and tried the mango and lemon sorbet.  I have never eaten more ice cream in one sitting and I still wanted more.  On top of that the place was spotless, the prices reasonable, and the service blazingly fast.  Right after us a whole soccer team (around college age) came in and they were all served within a few minutes.  I realize a lot of what I mentioned had to do with the specific graeter's I went to...but still, you know it's good when I tell people more about the ice cream than the great coasters at king's island.

...

Really though...they should at least demolish Son of Beast.  It taunted me the whole day.  I have never seen a more impressive coaster, including Kingda Ka (which was also shut down when I went to Six Flags.  WTF.)  Anyway that's all off topic...

If you were willing to drive to Cinci, just 3 -4 hours further north is Cedar Point, some of the best board walk fries and funnel cake you will ever find. Oh, the coasters are better, too.

A&W - Bacon cheeseburger and/or cheese curds
Burger King- One Dollar Double Cheeseburger
Dairy Queen- Um, blizzard? lol
Mcdonalds- Mcchicken
Wendy's-Baconator
Taco Bell- Love their hard tacos, so yeah I usually get that
Jack in the Box- Try to avoid this place, I do not like their burgers or most of their food. Though I do like their grilled sandwiches
KFC- Extra Crispy chicken and their mashed potatoes
Subway- Subway club

And my favorite fast food place:

Culvers- Can't pick one thing they have fantastic fish n chips, fantastic burgers, fantastic fried chicken, and desserts that blow away dairy queen (their concrete mixers are to die for with the same choices and then some that DQ has for their blizzards, they use custard)

Five Guys sucks. Fact. You're paying $5 for a well done (as in temperature, not quality) Whopper, plain and simple. I went there once and it tasted like ****. If you're paying for an actual hamburger, then you should be allowed to have it cooked properly (medium-rare or medium), and not just depend on salt and fat content to trick you into thinking it tastes good.

I should note, however, that Chic-Fila uses fresh chicken which is trimmed and breaded on site. They're a huge step above McDonald's or the likes in terms of quality of food.

We got a Five Guys recently and I wasn't impressed with their burgers, but I've heard that burger quality varies from location to location. I did like their fries though, probably the best out of the national chains.

I've never even heard of "Five Guys". There are no Jack in the Boxes in the northeast at all (yet they still air commercials on TV here), no White Castle within 100 miles.

My favorites would be with the Whopper value meal at Burger King or the Triple Classic at Wendys (the only problem with Wendys is that their food tends to be more expensive than other fast food places). I don't really like McDonalds that much, but I don't mind the Quarterpounder (the Big Mac is alright, but they put way too much lettuce on it).

What I really hate is when they lie in the commercials about the size of the sandwich. I remember getting a Rodeo Burger at Wendys after it came out, and the freaking thing was tiny. It was like the size of the hamburger in the kids meal.

I just remembered 2 places I forgot to mention.

1. Sonic's: The only reason to go here over basically anywhere else is the drinks and the roller girl delivery to your car.... but not all locations rollerskate to your car. Oh their cheesecake bites are pretty damn good too, but the burger and fries were generic in both look and flavor, so stopping anywhere else would be better.

2 is not really Fast Foods, but it is sooo good.
Nation's: Bacon Cheese Burger (w/ grilled onions) and a side of Chili Cheese Fries. They put a head of lettuce and half an onion on there, but it such a good and juicy burger that your not gonna care. A little on the expensive side, but you'll likely enjoy every bite so it's worth it. Their breafst is good too. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, ham, sausage and toast.

I've only been to Sonic's once and I think I just ordered a cheeseburger meal or something like that.  But, ****, it was GOOD.  It has this dry sort of flavour to the burger, not very greasy.  I would definitely go there again.  Though I don't like the drive-in setup.

I also forgot about Dick's in Seattle.  That's a good burger and cheap, too.  Don't get a small pop though because it's like a little dinky kid's drink.  Get at least a medium drink if you get one.  Dick's has this handmade relish of some sort.  It looks like green slime but it is great.  It's worth stopping by if you're in Seattle.  But then I do that whenever I travel in America.  In Canada we're a little weak on fast food variety but in the US there are all sorts of different local chains in the different states and I make a point to try them out.  Burgerville for example is pretty much only in the Portland area.  It's not an exceptional place but I felt I had to try it while in Portland because that's the only chance I would get to try it.

Someone can say the In-N-Out isn't as good as Five Guys (which I have never tried) but the thing is the closest In-N-Out to me is a 12 hour drive away.  If I'm in a California and In-N-Out is easily accessible I'm going there because it would be YEARS before I'm in an area with it again.  I've never tried White Castle before because I've never visited an area that has one.  Regardless of anyone's opinion of it I will try it out if I ever get the chance.  Scarcity plays a big effect.

The thing I should mention about Sonic's is that we had one pretty close to the house when I lived on the East Coast. I used to like it.... mostly for the roller skating older girls that came to my window(I was young.... elementary and then again for a summer in middle school).
Now In Cali, we used to see commercials all the freakin time and the food would look and sound so good, but the closest Sonics is 1-2 hours away depending on where you are. So they had me salivating to try their food again after all these years only to be completely underwhelmed by what that particular Sonic's had served me when I finally managed to be somewhere near enough one to stop by. I've eaten there once in the last 15+yrs, so I've tried almost nothing on the menu. Probably not fair to imply that all their food is generic.

We have a local fast food chain here called Zips, they have really good tartar sauce at about half the locations.

There is also a cheesesteak and sub chain called Bruchis, which I treat myself to once in awhile.

True.  I've hated the Sonic commericals for the last several years.  My wife and I like their Real Fruit Slushies, but we don't usually buy anything there other than that.  I dig their Spicy Southwest Breakfast Burrito, which they happen to have now, though it's also seasonal.

Wahoo's Fish Tacos: Wahoo's bowl (Spicy grilled fish, brown rice, and black beans)

Chipotle: Chicken Burrito (black beans, veggies, corn salsa, mild salsa, guacamole, rice, and of course chicken)

Wendy's: As many chicken nuggets as I can order.

Carl's Jr. : Breakfast burger w/hashbrowns and a Dr. Pepper.

Sonic: I don't know if its just the locations that I have visited, but I have never particularly enjoyed their food or specialty drinks.

Chick-Fila: (See: Wendy's)

What it comes down to is that you are getting quality ingredients and portions at a decent price. The food is tasty, well seasoned, and there isn't the "mystery" surrounding it in the same way that I can eat a dish at Taco Bell and not know what has just entered my system.

But.... you can almost certainly get better and much more authentic Mexican food at the nearest Taqueria you can find.

I used to avoid Chipotle with a passion (who puts cabbage & white rice in their burritos?), but I realize I wasn't giving it a fair chance. One day my girl brought home burrito for me and I actually liked it. I asked where it was from (I assumed it was the Mexixan Grocery Store or a new taqueria she stopped by) and she surprised me with Chipotle. It wasn't the best, but it was pretty good, still a little too expensive for what you get though, but I honestly think I'm just super spoiled by my usual taqueria and my back up taqueria.

at a decent price?
Thats why I don't like it. Its the most overpriced gringo establishment. The food is not terrible at all, but if you come into Tucson and then you go to Chipotle and all you want is a bean and cheese burrito they are just going to look at you funny and charge you like 6 bucks or however much it cost me that day. I used to go there and try out their fusion stuff every once in a while, but that was fine until they went and pissed me off. Not at all a decent price. I'd get a better deal going into a restaurant like La Parilla Suiza. I have to mention that outside of Mexican seafood, Tucson kinda sucks for Mexican food. The old ladies 5 dollar tomales outside of the bookstore even suck. There is still some good food, but nothing that blows you away like in Yuma where I'm from. If anyone ever ends up in Tucson I'd recommend La Casa Molina, for cheaper streetier food Los Betos.

never ever go to Qdoba mexican grill, they are fucking gross, and the ruined my stomach one day.

It's interesting how the regional location of a city can affect the food variety availability. Here in Spokane, located in Eastern Washington state, we have only a few really good Mexican places and lots of mediocre ones. We do have a lot of good Asian food though. My friend from Tulsa, says it was the opposite in Oklahoma: Tons of good Mexican, but the only Chinese was cheap buffets.

We only have like 3-4 barbecue places too, and only one chicken place besides KFC. :(

On this, we agree. Qdoba is essentially a bad Chipotle- making it even worse for the angry anti-Chipotle mob gathering in the thread, and a disappointment to me. I got well acquainted with my toilet the night I ate Qdoba.

@ BlackNMild

I don't care for the portions at most authentic Taquerias out here in the suburbs, but I will agree that the Mexican food I grab in Grand Central Market, or really anywhere in Los Angeles, is around 100 times better than Chipotle. It is just that in the suburb I live in, prices are hiked up as people see a dime-sized taco as a delicacy.

I suppose I was just comparing Chipotle to the other chains that spring to mind when one says Mexican fast food (e.g. Del Taco and Taco Bell, at least out here).

EDIT: You know, this just sprung to my mind. Anyone that ever visits Vancouver should absolutely NOT dine at Steamrollers. Imagine Chipotle, but you literally watch them take the food out of cans and ready-made salad bags. Now imagine that they don't season any of it, raise the prices, and serve it to you in a soggy tortilla. And to think, people were lining up for that s***, it just supports ShyGuy's claim that fast food can really differ by location.

True story: in one of our local malls, nearly every single restaurant in the food court serves some variant of fast-food Chinese...even the "Mexican" place.   The only two other shops are a pizza place and a fast-food version of a Japanese grill.  It's unreal.

Panda Express was good for the first two weeks of moving into a college town. Then it got old really quick, and almost sickening to think about. Where i'm from we mostly ate Buffet Chinese food and Mexican food. Panda Express was probably the first chain Chinese restaurant I came across. The second was P.F. Chang's which is delicious...but really fucking expensive. Japanese food is almost the same thing, and outside of sushi it is much much cheaper.

From what I understand, Americanized Chinese food typically has stronger flavors (except heat) and more meat.

I enjoy Italian pizza, most "by the slice" style pizza I have eaten in Italy is far superior to the American equivalent. There was a pizza place I went to every day for breakfast for a while (just outside of Rome), I absolutely loved it.

McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Checkers, etc:
Double cheesburger (only cheese and ketchup), large fry.  The girl who used to be at the cash register at McDonalds memorized this order, even though I only go maybe once a month tops.  If it is a place with larger burgers, scratch the second burger (or even the double, depending on the size).

Subway
If they have it, seafood salad, aseigo cheese bread, american cheese, nothing else.  Otherwise Philly cheese steak, onions, otherwise the same.

Quiznos
French dip

Panera
Clam chowder bread bowl

Taco bell
Steak Quesadilla

Dairy Queen
Foot-long cheese dog, nothing on it.  Fries, vanilla milk shake float (if they still have those).

Pizzaria Uno's
Chicago classic deep-dish pizza

Pizza hut
Stuffed-crust with only cheese

Pizza (any other)
Cheese

Panda express
Death.  I always regret eating there.

KFC
Popcorn chicken

Popeye's
Catfish sandwich, biscuit.  I sometimes go here just for the biscuits to eat with canned clam chowder, since there is one right near my house.

Favorite Sushi
Unagi (or anything with it), followed by anything with dynamite in it.  After that it varies a lot depending on what is available, but snapper, shrimp, crab stick (or better yet crab if they have it), or tempura shrimp or soft-shell-crab are good.  When I make it, usually either dynamite shrimp, fried fish, or baked chicken.

Chain pizza typically sucks, there's a place around here that will rival and defeat any local place that anyone here mentions. It's like the Soup Nazi's place on Seinfeld, there's a constant line out the door at all times, and they don't take any ****. One time they didn't give me my change, and I was like "**** happens" and didn't mention it. I will admit that the "new" Domino's is actually pretty good though. Uno's is fucking garbage though. Deep dish pizza (and pan pizza in general) is a disgrace to the very concept of pizza.

Fun fact: pizza is the Italian word (though American spelling) for pie. So when you call it "pizza pie" you're calling it "pie pie."

Deep dish pizza is amazing; it's quite different from standard pizza, but it's great. There are so many good local pizza places here, and a bunch of great wing places. If I'm getting both I go to Valerio's, but only the one at 32nd and Pittsburgh; the rest aren't as good. If only pizza, I go to the east side South Gate, and for just wings either Chipper's or Odis 12 (I haven't been to Odis 12 in a while because it's more out of the way and doesn't have very good atmosphere, but their wings are amazing).

Burger King: Double Whopper with Cheese add bacon, no tomatoes.

McDonald's: Double Quarter Pounder w/Cheese -or- Dollar Menu

Wendy's: Anything with bacon, really. Unless it also has mushrooms.

Subway: Either the spicy italian or cold cut combo

Chinese Takeout: Shrimp Lo Mein or Shrimp with Garlic Sauce.

The only fastfood place that I've liked a burger with mushrooms has been Carls Jr.
Burger King & McDonalds uses the same cheap canned mushrooms and Wendys isn't much better.

As far as getting some chinese takeout, I always get:
House Special Chow Fun & House Special Fried Rice - if a place can't get either of those right(specifically the Chow Fun), I will likely find somewhere else to eat next time.
I pretty much mix and match from there, but sweet & sour pork, beef and broccoli and pot stickers are constant favorites.

Burger joints: Some variant of a double burger (Double Quarter at McDonald's, the Double with cheese at Wendy's - my local BK still has the Double Stacker so I'll go with that). If I'm feeling brave, hungry, or both I'll order the Grand Slam at Wendy's, but this has only happened twice in my life. Triple, extra patty, no tomatoes or pickles.

Dairy Queen: Peanut Buster Parfait.

KFC: Big Crunch sandwich

Subway: Either the Steak and Cheese or Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, footlong

Chinese takeout: Egg rolls heavy on the meat, chicken fried rice, chicken balls (sauce on the side if not held entirely).

Pizza: Pepperoni, ground beef, extra cheese.

Other: Donairs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donair) from the mom&pop pizza place at the end of my street, or hamburger/chicken poutine.

Fast food has its place in this world. It can make you feel like your not hungry, when you are hungry. But you'll absorb no vitamins, potassium, iron, and other essential nutrients from any of the major fast food chains. Maybe protein and carbs....actually I guaruntee it, but amino acids? No, probably not.

I'm not a health nut or anything, but I do like to eat real food...because real food, is well, real food. Anything that isn't actually cook (aka takes time), probably isn't the best thing to eat.

That said

MccaD's - Doublecheese burger (single slice of cheese) or a McChicken (no mayo)
BK - Whooper
Taco Bell - Crunchwrap Supreme with volcano sauce
Hardee's - Mafuckin' Thickburger on sour dough
KFC - Extra crispy
Pizza - Every vegetable plus chicken and jalapeños DEEP DISH cut in squares
Rally's - Just the fries
Wendy's - Jr. Deluxe no mayo (use to be the spicy chicken but it's extremely small now) and a frosty
Steak n Shake - Frisco Melt

I just went to Popeyes and I think I'm through with that place, at least that specific one.

I ordered the Catfish dinner hoping that the portions were atleast of similar size to the ones shown in the picture, especially since it's the most expensive dinner meal/combo they had @ ~$7.50.

I had to turn the car around and go back because when I opened my catfish meal, it looked like i had 2 fish nuggets that wouldn't even fill the container than my beans & rice came in. There was more biscuit than there was meat. The guy offered me another Catfish "nugget" and told me that that is the way it is and that he always tells his friends not to order that meal because of it. I had them trade me out for the 3 piece chicken meal instead.  That's the second or 3rd time that that Popeyes has made me feel ripped off with what they have served me, and 3 of the people inside weren't even surprised that I come in to return it as if it happens all the time. The manager was a bitch about it though, but a bitch in the nicest way possible. I still think I'm avoiding that place from now on.

I've only been to Popeye's once and it was great. My brother and I managed to instantly make friends with the cashier, so he hooked it up with a box of fries and discounted our chicken meals. We took it outside to eat and he joined us; choppin it up with us for a couple minutes before heading back inside. Food was decent for fried chicken (which you really can't **** up) and the fries were good. All in all, a pretty good experience. That was like 4 years ago.

I just seen a commercial for KFC where they advertised a meal deal of 7 pieces of chicken and a large mash&gravy and a large coleslaw with 4 buscuits or something like that.

Problem is that the bucket they used had 7 pieces of chicken visible at the surface of the bucket. What else is in that bucket?
If 7 pieces fit at the top of the bucket, then they could have easily fit about 25 pieces in there.
Doesn't that constitute as some sort of false advertising through blatantly misleading imagery?

They made sure that they had 7 pieces up on the screen for most of the commercial, but still, tha tis very misleading to use a big bucket full of chicken to only sell me 7 pieces out of it.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but it looks like McDonalds is no longer the #1 Fast Food Chain around the world.

It' looks like Subway is now the king of fastfood and that is just disappointing.
http://www.metro.co.uk/news/857499-subway-overtakes-mcdonalds-as-worlds-largest-restaurant-chain

I would tell you why, but I'm gonna skim through this thread to see if I already complained about Subway or not so that I can just quote myself instead.

I believe it.  Subway is absolutely everywhere.  I have found in my travels here in BC that McDonalds is a wee bit picky.  There are lots of middle-of-nowhere small towns that don't have one.  It seems that A&W and Dairy Queen are the fast food burger joints of choice for small BC towns.  But Subway is in every town.  You just cannot be somewhere in the entire province where there is no Subway.  If there is no Subway then that probably means there are practically no businesses whatsoever.  Everyone has a Subway.

Of course Subway and McDonalds are apples and oranges.  I would never go to Subway if I craved burgers or McDonalds if I craved subs.  Same with KFC.  It doesn't really compete with these places in my mind because sometimes I want fried chicken so burger or sub or taco places aren't even in the picture.

My neck of the woods has 4 Subways within 10 miles of each other, including one in Walmart with another less than a mile down the road. There was a quiznos across from Walmart, but they went buh-bye and Gamestop moved in. We do not have a DQ nor A&W, though we used to have an A&W a long time ago, like 30 years.

should all be illegal. Is it possible to sue over this? I want to make it stop?

The JnB Tacos are the worst offender by far, and I'm not sure how they get away with advertising their tacos that have never and will never look like that no matter how much time they take to prepare it, but it's grossly misleading and very obviously false advertising.

I don't eat there (often) but sometime a last minute pull in to the drive thru based on something you remember seeing from a commercial but only because you were starving and can't seem to wait an extra 20 minutes to get it done right and definitely don't want to go home and take the time to do it yourself can't be avoided.

Laziness and impatience often wins the battle, but blatantly false advertising is still false advertising, and I doubt they can even walk into a single 1 of their 1000's of restaurants and find one that prepares food that looks anything close to the commercial.

But like I said, Jack N The Box in the WORST offender according to those pics and my real life experience. I've been eating at JnB for 2 decades and have NEVER and I mean NEVER seen a taco that looked like anything other than the "actual" photo. I was confused when I first saw ads for their new tacos only to realize it was the same tacos as before with new advertising pics.

Rodeo Burger from BK is all I ever get. It use to be a dollar back in the dizzay (like the double cheese before it got down-sized and the chicken sandwich...the real chicken sandwich).

BK use to serve tacos too. Yeah...they did. 2 for a buck. But since then, BK has been fucking up royally and I haven't eaten there in years. They keep changing **** that doesn't need to be changed.

Whenever I was on the road and needed something drive-thru, that was my spot. Now it's Carl's Jr., Taco Bell or KFC.

Looks like I've brought up my Subway dissatisfaction before, just maybe not in detail.

haha... hey BnM you need to make sure you give the people working at Wendy's **** for not salting them. They have a big salt shaker for doing that, by the end of the day the fry station is Briney. Also, what time do you normally go? Best time is noon and 5pm, thats just when everything runs the smoothest. If you get there at 2 or 3 make sure they give you fresh stuff.

&  maybe that was the problem with my return trip to Wendy's. time of day.

Subway is horrible anyway. I used to eat there a lot when I was a kid, now I can barely look at the sign without wanting to throw up. Why is the turkey always wet? Why are there "grill marks" drawn on the microwaved processed meat-glued-chicken?

The only place to get a decent sub is Publix or Jimmy John's.
Title: Re: Your #1 meal at Fast Food Restaurants
Post by: TJ Spyke on August 11, 2013, 01:34:18 PM
LOL, sorry you have had bad luck. I have good experience at Subways at least 80% of the time. Sometimes it's not as good depending on the location and the employees, but that is true of pretty much any food place.
Title: Re: Your #1 meal at Fast Food Restaurants

I also have plenty of good Subway experiences. I tend to mostly get deli sliced meat though, and certainly not that so-called rib concoction.

That said, there were some less-than-appetizing locations in my city, until one got closed down by an inspector. Suddenly almost every location closed for half a year before reopening under a new owner. Since then the quality has been very good, even the pulled pork I tried once.

I usually stick to Ham or the Italian BMT, and I'd say I have mostly good experiences with Subway. I like to load toppings, so the "salad sandwich" thing doesn't bother me.

It's $10.00 and comes with a Mountain of Meat.

Quote
Arby’s wanted to make sure everyone knew it didn’t only sell those roast beef sandwiches slathered in cheese, so it made a poster showcasing a stacked tower of all the other meats on the menu, reports the Washington Post.
Once they built it, the calls started to come.
“People started coming in and asking, ‘Can I have that?’” Christopher Fuller, the company’s vice president of brand and corporate communications told the Post.
The answer is now yes; yes, you can have a $10 pile of meat between two buns, but you’ll have to know to ask for it as it won’t be on the menu.

That mound includes: 2 chicken tenders; 1.5 oz. of roast turkey; 1.5 oz. of ham; 1 slice of Swiss cheese; 1.5 oz. of corned beef; 1.5 oz. brisket; 1.5 oz. of Angus steak; 1 slice of cheddar cheese; 1.5 oz. roast beef and 3 half-strips of bacon.

KFC's new Zinger Double Down King

They call it the Zinger Double Down King. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but with a burger patty stuffed in between two chicken patties, it's still a sight to behold.

Like the original Double Down, the breaded chicken still acts as a bun, it just doesn't look like the same off-kilter boneless chicken breast. The chicken patties pictured seem to have a smoother shape to them.

The bacon strips and cheese are still there and still look like they can induce a heart attack.

They will never get rid of Pan crust. It is their signature and still the highest selling crust (in non-Latino/Russian areas as those groups tend to swing heavily in favor of Stuffed crust).

Makes me wish I still worked for them because I could have done so much more with these ingredients. I had a bunch of "off menu" items I made and even sold to customers because of how great they were.

Not sure how long the $10 deal will last as the franchises have been honoring it as an $11 deal in high business cost areas like Washington state.

Meatballs and Salami were already sold in the Huts which made sandwiches. Now they might actually sell enough of the sandwich material to justify the expense.

And most of those sauces were already on the menu in some form as well.

Definitely feels like Pizza Hut is catching up with Dominos in terms of variety and flavor.

Brandogg, you way want to try removing soy from your diet. I've read all of the ingredient labels of the product at Pizza Hut and there is a very large amount of soy in everything. Soy can wreck thyroids and male hormone balances leading to a lot of health complications. Soy makes me sick as well.

Soy is used in the non-stick sprays, garlic, ranch, and numerous other parts of the process for Pizza Hut.

Course, soy is in everything these days so it sometimes feels like a futile effort.

I never got the movement to put Fritos on everything. But I never was into Frito on their own to begin with.

Hmmm...

Gimbab Land and Gimbab Heaven are the places I usually eat.  Cheap and fast sushi like rice rolls are great.

But, if I want a fast food place I want to seat down and eat at...that has to be OK!!  Fresh Noodles.  They have some great dishes that seem to be of a slightly higher quality.

Oh course, these are the English translations of my Korean restaurants I eat at.

like what? I had a friend that worked at Togo's (sandwhich shop) that would routinely make us "off the menu" sandwiches that were pretty damn good. I would like to know what you were doing at Pizza Hut.

Not sure how long the $10 deal will last as the franchises have been honoring it as an $11 deal in high business cost areas like Washington state.

Yeah, I forgot it's up to $11 now...

Definitely feels like Pizza Hut is catching up with Dominos in terms of variety and flavor.

wut!?  Dominoes may have variety, but the majority of their pizza is still garbage.
The best pizza they have IMHO is that bacon chicken ranch on white sauce. Their new herb crust is not that good and the brooklyn style I had wasn't that bad, but I would rather get the usual 3-4 pizza's (pan and stuffed) I would get from Pizza hut than continue mining Dominoe's menu for a 2nd or 3rd pizza I could reliably go to them for.

I'm sure part of this is my burn out of Pizza Hut from working over a decade there. Everything felt plain without my special additions. The biggest thing was the extra shredded Asiago/Parmesan on the crust (why I have defaulted to Dominos, post-Hut). Baking cheese on the crust makes a pizza 10 times better. Pizza Huts did not all uniformly carry this (I am suspecting they do now!) Ask for the parmesean on top of the pizza rolls before baking them. Tastes awesome.

I blended sauces or added my own toppings from home.

I made a a Caesar Salad pizza which was awesome. Caesar dressing for the base, top with chicken, bacon, then after baking drop some romaine on top if you want to make a legit "salad pizza". I would also stuff the stuffed crust with other toppings years before they made it a marketing trick. I also made stuffed cheesey bread before Dominos came up with it.

My favorite was my "breakfast supreme" pizza.

Quick version: Pan crust with white sauce. Add ham, pork (sometimes beef too), mushrooms, jalapenos, top with Parmesan and bacon (to make sure it is crispy). Had it almost every morning when I opened the restaurant.

Expanded version: Thin crust, scramble some eggs and drop on thin crust. Add toppings. Lay another thin crust on top and seal edges. Poke holes in top, sprinkle cheese on top as well and run through oven. Ultimate breakfast calzone!

I still dabble in pizzacraft at home. I keep meaning to post photos/instructions in the NWR Kitchen thread but I always eat them before I remember  :cool; .

Pizza Hut is also one of the few American Pizza chains in South Korea.  There are basically 3.  Dominoes, Pizza Hut, and Papa John's.  Dominoes and Pizza Hut are the most plentiful.  I think there are more Pizza Huts though.

Here Pizza Hut has some crazy flavors, like Sweet Potato, Shrimp Pizza.

Sweet Potato stuffed crust and more.  However, if I am going to eat pizza I would prefer to eat Papa John's here, or maybe Mr. Pizza.  Mr. Pizza is a Korean chain with the slogan:  "For Love of Women."

I haven't ever eaten a Taco and I don't think I ever want to, it looks like plastic. We have had Sal's New York pizza open here and that **** is sooo good. It's a heart attack in 1/8 slices. Immensely decadent.

Carls Jr is nice here beating McD and Burger King. BK is pretty low end now and McDs is McDs everywhere. Also new is Texas Chicken which is a nice alternative to KFC and a fair bit less greasy.

FYI, Taco Bell brought back the Diablo hot sauce. They changed it slightly, darker color and not quite as "Diablo-y" in terms of heat, but still far and away better than any of their other hot sauce packets.

I tried the Mac N Cheetos at Burger King. They weren't very good. You would think, Macaroni and Cheese is good, Cheetos are good, and deep fried is even better!

Not so. The external Cheetos crust tastes just a little bit off, just like the Doritos tacos at Taco Bell do. The internal cheese sauce doesn't taste good, the Cheetos flavor seems to permeate it and it is orange. The pasta isn't bad. All in all, it is less than the sum of its parts.

So I don't really eat much fast food in my new city but if I want something cost effective than I will grab something.

McDonalds: Grand Mac which is a slightly larger Big Mac. I used to get Quarter Pounders with Cheese.

Jack in the Box: Sourdough Jack.  This is probably my go to burger when I go here. the Tacos are decent for the price.

Carl's Jr. I either get the California Classic or a burger with a lettuce wrap.

Taco Bell: I tend to get the Double Decker tacos which is basically a hard taco and it has refried beans on the side of the shell and then a soft taco tortilla where that refried beans are.

Pizza: I tend to favor Pizza Hut and a few years back they had Sriracha drizzle which was nice. I don't think they have that anymore though.   I tend to lean towards the veggie toppings with one meat topping.   I love the pineapple, roma tomatoes, black olives, Banana Peppers or the Peruvian Cherry Peppers. I also have a place that I go to by the name of Fired Pie and they have it set up like Subway where you can pick and choose what toppings you want and it is all at a set price so you don't need to worry about getting extra toppings and it costing you more.

Popeyes: I tend to just get their chicken. Usually their spicy blend. Biscuits are really good.

I tend to go to local places to eat and not chain fast food places most of the time but when I do eat Fast food these above are the places I go.

Sounds like the McDonalds app has a coupon for $1 "Any Sandwich" (excluding Double Quarter Lb, and Signature burgers) till September 30th.

I don't personally have the app, but the new quarter pounders are pretty damn good.
I'd get one more often for only a dollar.

and a $1 McDouble coupon till the end of the year
and Free Medium Fries on Friday (haha I get it) till the end of the year as well

edit:
Not to mention, the app gets you curbside drop off, so you don't have to wait in the drive thru line either.
I might actually download the app and take advantage of this. McD's is literally 2 minutes from my house.

When I was on vacation, we did a taste test. Who has the number one lemonade, Wendy's or Chik Fil A?

Chik Fil A was a little sweeter and Wendy's was a tad more tart. It was very close, but Chik Fil A was the winner. Wendy's was cheaper per ounce though, but Chik Fil A stayed cold longer due to the foam cup.

Sonic is probably the #3 lemonade in my book.

So my mom asked me to pick something up for her from McDonalds.... I suggested she use the app and order food, and she responded "you're picking up the food.... why don't you install the app"

so I pulled up to McD's parked, installed the app, registered an account, and browswed the deal menu.
She wanted a Small Fry and a McChicken Ssandwhich. Less than $3.00, I included the daily $1 LARGE FRY with her order. I tied to add another deal to the order, but you can only do 1 deal per order (not per account per day... but per order)
Sooooo, I then placed a separate order with a Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese for $1

4-5 minutes later, a worker came out confused that I was 1 car w/ 1 person in it, and had 2 separate orders.

short story shorter.....
She got a small fry and a McChicken sandwhich for $2.89 (regular menu price)
and I got a Large Fry and a Qtr Lb w/ Cheese for $2.00

Now we are getting back to Fast Food prices!!!
some other pretty good deals in the app too.

That's a neat idea. If they all used a proper API someone could build an app and pull all the info from each company's server.

There are so many ways that apps are built it would be challenging to try and lump them all in together.

If each of those apps has a mobile site equivalent, it could be pretty easy, right?  Just needs to store all your login info and maybe offer a map that shows the locations or something that summarizes available coupons.

The truth is I like McDonalds a lot. My biggest problem with McDonald's is it was for a time the only place in town, so I ate it enough to where it wears down on you.

In and Out Burger has largely the same flavor profile. The bread is for sure better though. They make sure to tast it right. At McDonalds they only take the time to prepare bread well for single burgers. By far the single burger is the simplest thing on the menu that you can get prepared well. Most other things may end up sloppy, even the artisan burgers.

Wendy's has the best meat. I used to work at Wendy's and I can attest to the quality of the meat handling, the salt distribution and the freshness. The chili process that Wendy's created allows them to keep the burgers made all the time and fresh. You don't have to wait long, your burger is fresh, it gets made even before you ordered it, if no one orders a burger which doesn't happen except after lunch is over, it goes int othe chili.

Five guys is excellent, but you're going to spend more money. My last bill was something like $35 for two combos.

I've been eating Freddy's a lot lately. Now I have to go on a diet.

Carl's is not a place I have ever been to fond of. The local place has some of the worst staff at my nearest location. The next  nearest place is great though. I recently tried the Beyond Burger which is a no meat burger, and it is pretty amazing. By far the best non meat burger I've had. It's right up there with the 70% soy burgers I used to get at the school lunch grill in high school. If someone hadn't told you there was no meat, you might not notice.

As I said earlier I had a Big Buford at Rally's today and it was delicious.

I've only been to Rally's once since there are none anywhere even remotely close to the part of the continent I live in.  I don't remember what I ordered aside from that it was a burger.  I liked it and would go again but I can't recall what it tastes like.  I went to Freddy's on the same trip and it was fantastic.  Very unique flavor as well so I distinctly recall it and will check it out again if I'm ever in an area where one is.

I love In-N-Out.  The closest location is in southern Oregon I think so I only can have it when I'm visiting California or Nevada or somewhere like that.  So it's a big novelty for me since I'll go years without eating it.  If I was eating routinely maybe it wouldn't impress me as much but as it is it's a special occasion that I get to eat In-N-Out.

Five Guys might be the best burger I've ever had but it is ridiculously expensive.  To order exactly what I want I'm dropping almost 20 bucks and I would have to work hard to find a way to spend that at a place like McDonalds.

Carl's Jr. is great though familiarity has made it less special as it's now in Canada and I can and do eat there routinely.  I used to get it about once a year on my annual trip to Seattle as the only location near me was in Marysville on the way.

McDonalds is noticeably different in Canada than it is in the States.  The McChicken is my favourite item here in Canada but it is junk in America.  We have the American McChicken and call it the Jr. Chicken.  The Canadian McChicken is not some value menu item.  It's a "proper" menu item like the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder.  I like McDonalds but I don't like it when I want a burger.  I like the Big Mac but I eat it to fill a craving for a Big Mac which I consider distinct from a hamburger.  McDonalds' food is pretty lousy but still enjoyable in a processed food way.  It's like how I enjoy Kraft Dinner but it's not "proper" pasta and doesn't fill a pasta craving.  It's its own thing.  McDonalds' fries are fantastic though and I like the Canadian ones better.  The American ones taste too much like potato chips.  One thing US McDonalds has over the Canadian one is that the McGriddles still use scrambled eggs.  In Canada they switched them to us the same egg as the McMuffin and I don't like it as much.

Wendy's used to be one of my favourite fast food places but it has completely changed, at least here in Canada.  I don't know what the food is like in America as I tend to prioritize chains that are not in Canada while I'm in the States.  They changed Wendy's fries probably ten years ago or so and then a few years later changed the burgers.  So if the burgers and fries are different, how is this is the same restaurant as before?  I wish someone would start a new chain called Dave's or something like that and sell the Wendy's food from before.

The way Iansane talks about McDonalds reminds me of how I talk about Taco Bell vs Mexican food. I live in ground zero for obtaining good Sonoran food. I eat Taco Bell every once in a while, but it isn't real Mexican food.

As far as Wendy's changing in Canada. Must be the meat. In the USA the Meat is 100% ground beef never frozen. The only thing that can change with it is if someone salts it too much, or if they fail to do the No-freeze policy. The website says in Canada that is also the case. The only thing I suspect is the cook in your area is too liberal with the salt or doesn't salt it enough.

"The cook in my area" would be several cooks.  There's like five or six Wendys in each city here and I live in the Vancouver area so multiple cities blend into each other.  I've probably been to 20 different Wendys since I noticed the change.

A hamburger isn't just a slab of beef cooked.  There are specific ingredients added for flavor and ways of cooking it, otherwise every burger would taste the same.  Plus if you've ever had a burger where someone literally just cooked up ground beef without doing anything else it is pretty boring.  They changed something and they made a big stink about it too, advertising them as "Dave's Single", "Dave's Double", etc.  The bun is totally different as well.  Different flavor, different bun, new advertising campaign and a subtle name change?  Yeah, they changed it.

I used to work at Wendy's as a Hamburger cook. Wendy's Burgers just have salt on them.

Wendy's burgers come in big sleeves about 35cm(i'm guessing 14 inches) x 10cm x 10cm. The main thing that makes Wendy's Burgers different is they're square. They're not like Burger King for instance which are all pre-seasoned/pre-charred in some factory. I had a friend who worked at Burger King who told me "we used to just microwave them" At Wendy's the meat is just plain hamburger meat. One of my managers joked "what makes Wendy's patties special is we don't cut corners"

So, what happens is you take a patty out of the sleeve. The sleeve is contained in a metal drawer. In the drawer is a sleeve for quarter pound patties and 8th pound patties. I'd have to wash my hands constantly because they were often covered in blood. Normally you'd slit the plastic sleeve up the top and pull patties out individually as needed. You also had to watch the temperature of the drawer and the little mini fridge below. I think the fridge was kept at 50°F or 10°C

You put it on the grill and you season it with salt from a salt shaker. 30 seconds later you flip it. Then you press down on all the corners of the burger starting with the lower right corner. Much blood will come out. You do this once and only once because you don't want to contaminate the burger. 60 seconds after this you flip the burger again. and 60 seconds later you flip it again. Now you flip the burger at 30ish second intervals until it has reached the proper color brown. This is variable. Also to note. The grill at Wendy's is on a slant. The slant is only like 3°. It's just a sheet of metal. So, it drains the grease and blood out of the burger as time goes on. The grill is very hot. It is heated by gas below it. Sometimes it was fun to make flames on it. Also, throughout the day you use salt to clean it.

The burger is placed on a bun and mustard is applied in a W shape. Ketchup and Mayonnaise are applied with a knife from troughs. Vegetables are applied to order. I did the burgers and fries though. I only worked at the sandwich station twice. When I worked there Wendy's fries were just plain potatoes. While working there they changed the type of oil they used. Which didn't make much of a difference in flavor. But after I was working there, they changed the fries completely to the sea salt fries we have today.

I have several times made home made Wendy's style burgers.  I worked there for a year and a half between 2005-2007. If you follow the steps above it will taste like it was made at Wendy's. It may be just salt, but there is some technique involved as well. The meat fat content Is probably 80/20 or 85/15.

So, I was at Wendy's yesterday. And the only thing to seem to have changed was how the menu was oriented. Previously a Number 1 was a single, a 2 a double, and a 3 was a triple. This is different now as "Daves" whatever is now all number 1 with the variations of patty count folded into it. The 2 is the Baconator, and 3 was something else. I got the mushroom melt burger thing though. So, I couldn't comment on if the Single, Double, or Triple tasted different.
I was there a month ago. It tasted standard. I have been at times where they over salted the burger, or the burger had fried Grease tassels like Five Guys or Freddy's has. The bun could play a big factor. Wendy's uses cheapo cheapo buns. We'd microwave in the bag for 15 seconds them to make them soft. Use Wonder bread, or Wal-mart buns if you make them at home. Other variations could be ketchup, and mustard brand. I think they were just Heinz before. Might have been Hunt's.

Edit: Apparently they changed from Heinz to Ventura 4 months ago. That's probably it. So tell em no ketchup and bring a bag of Wal-mart buns with you next time.

There must be a difference in Canadian and American Wendys then.  I noticed the change.  My brothers noticed the change.  My friends noticed the change.  So unless it's collective insanity or a BC-wide thing or I just happen to have a lot of influence in my social circle (but only regarding Wendys burgers), then something changed at some point.  Maybe it's entirely the sauces, bun and/or cheese.  It might be the fact that my favourite item was the Big Bacon Classic which they got rid of when they introduced the Baconator.  The Big Bacon Classic might have been a Canadian-only thing as I don't recall seeing it at a time I went to an American Wendys when the item was still available in Canada.  They changed the Jr Bacon Cheeseburger around the same time, making it a much smaller patty than before.

The main difference in flavor is that the old burgers were more dry, if that makes sense.  I often have grease dripping out of the burger at Wendys these days but that wasn't so common before.  Maybe the meat is the same but the grills changed.  Maybe Wendys Canada had a distinct flavor and they decided to standardize the American style across all markets when they introduced the "Dave's" branding.

Update:
I have proof!  They admit they changed it:

Well that sucks. Sometimes changing something that is simple yet well made is not a great idea.

One of my favorite places to eat here in Arizona is Chile Pepper/Mr. G's which is a local Yuma only chain. But it's an award winning place. The Bean and Cheese burrito is simple, but it is just well made.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2012/12/18/the-best-burritos-in-america/1778287/

I used to get cravings for this place when I lived in Tucson.

But back to Wendy's. You're right. Wendy's burgers should not be greasy. They're pretty well drained by the time you get them. As far as the Baconator goes. The Baconator when I worked there was just a double with bacon on it. The way we would make bake was in a Food safe probably polypropylene container in a microwave. It looked sort of like a plastic shoe box. It was greasy as hell.

I got a Jr Bacon Cheeseburger a year ago. Something seemed different at that point. The patty seemed taller yet with a smaller circumference. Previously a jbc was just a single 8th pound patty with 2 slices of bacon.

But you know what I really miss? The Jalepeño bacon cheddar melt. That was awesome. Whichever version they had when I was working there was great. I used to eat that on my break.

Another thing to note is that article about the change is from 2011. They may have vacillated between burgers over the years.

I used to work at Pizza Hut too, but I got nothing great to say about them. They haven't been good in years. When I eat pizza lately I eat at local chains.

Round Table is good, but typically way over priced. They just opened up one in town that is built like a pizza pub, so I've been meaning to go with some friends. If nothing else their cheesy bread is bomb.

I like Pizza Hut but the reasons for it are very specific and oddly enough it might be hard for me to discuss it without getting political so hopefully this doesn't violate forum rules.

The Canadian government has supply management for the dairy industry.  That's strictly factual.  As a result prices for dairy products are largely fixed and there is a very large tariff for importing dairy from other countries.  The price of cheese in Canada is quite high compared to, well, pretty much every country I've ever visited.

As the cheese prices increased pizza places did not want to charge higher prices for their pizzas so instead they cut back on the cheese.  As a result pizza around my area is pretty much all **** and I tend to only eat it when at a party that serves it.  At Pizza Hut if you get the cheese lover's pizza which has "double" cheese it ends up being a tolerable pizza.  Double of half equals one so you get what used to be a normal pizza.

That is an odd situation!  I feel like some places in the US go completely overboard with the cheese.  I went to a by-the-slice place once and it was like eating a giant mozzarella stick.
Title: Re: Your #1 meal at Fast Food Restaurants
Post by: Stratos on April 11, 2019, 06:55:25 PM
Its a funny balance. You need a generous amount of cheese to make a good pizza, but some people have a philosophy of cooking that going overboard on ingredients is how you cook well. And too much cheese can be gagging, even for a cheese lover like me.
Title: Re: Your #1 meal at Fast Food Restaurants
Post by: ejamer on April 16, 2019, 10:13:49 AM
Possibly due to habit, I actually prefer pizza when they don't go too heavy on the cheese. I want the whole experience to be balanced for flavor and texture; the "giant mozza stick" effect makes me gag a little bit.

(Which is odd. I used to love mozza sticks when I was younger.)

One thing that I do miss is McDonald's pizza. This might just be childhood nostalgia speaking, but it was pretty awesome. The sauce was great, and the crust (did it use cornmeal or something?) was unique.  So yeah, that probably warns everyone that my taste in pizza isn't to be trusted.

Being in Canada, hearing they are available in Florida doesn't help much... but I'm curious if it's the same thing. You'd have to assume not, since the pizza I remember was pulled off the menus in the early 90s.

Who is gonna buy an Impossible Whopper, and then next to it a Regular Whopper and do the side by side taste test?

I haven’t had the Impossible Whopper, but I’ve had many Impossible Burger patties at a small, suburban non-chain in New Jersey where I used to live. I order it regularly because I’m monitoring my cholesterol consumption. I exercise regularly; it’s bad genetics apparently. Anyway, I can tell the difference if I’m paying attention. If I were to have some blind taste tests, I may fail a few. The Impossible Burger is really close to a regular beef patty, notably closer than the Beyond Burger which itself is pretty good. If I had to describe it, Impossible Burger is a decent beef substitute, but it can’t substitute the fat where a lot of the flavor comes from. Put it against a Kobe beef patty or a brisket mix, and yeah, you probably can tell.

Honestly, that's how BK should advertise the national roll out.

"Take the Impossible Whopper Challenge"

and it's a 2 Whopper meal (1 Impossible, 1 Regular) both in identical wrappings, 1 Fry, and a drink.

and if they really want to step it up and entice people to give it a try, figure out a way to keep track of which was which (special codes on the wrappers?) and have people take the survey to choose the correct sandwich (same survey where they usually give you a free whopper for taking) and give some prize for choosing correctly.

Right = 1 Free BK Combo coupon (or $5 off any combo coupon)
Wrong = 1 Free Incredible Whopper coupon (since you couldn't tell the difference)

That’s fair. I’m not completely off red meat and high cholesterol foods. If I’m really craving a juicy real-meat cheeseburger or steak, I’ll order one.

Unfortunately, the reality I have to live with is keeping red meat consumption to two or three times a month. For those with dietary restrictions, the Impossible Burger is a great alternative.

There was a bit of a huff when a national pizza joint here mislead customers with Beyond Beef Burger. The wording was far too easy to assume it was meat not a meat substitute and given what it is made of it could have killed someone. They then doubled down with an excuse that sneaking in the product was for the good of the planet which pretty much an open admission. Very not cool hijacking a good cause to cover for your PR stunt and damages the very cause you claim to uphold. I never ordered it because **** them for several other reasons but reports from others were poor.

I am curious in the Impossible burger as I hear their stuff is much better.

I'm deeply suspicious of meat-replacement burgers. Not so much about taste, which is probably good enough to not care about. It's the overall quality and whether there is any improvement in nutrition by eating them that has me wondering. Last I heard they were super high in salt, and maybe preservatives too... although if eating fast food I supposed that probably wouldn't really shift the scale?

It just feels like all the marketing and hype have drowned out any discussion about whether these are really a good and beneficial idea, or just a hot fad. Not that such things regularly happen in the food healthy industry... *coughcough*

And for a more useful addition, made my (usually) annual excursion to eat at Arby's recently. They have no restaurant in town, so I need to drive a couple of hours* but it's always totally worth it. There is something awesome about simple roast beef sandwiches with those curly fries that I'll always enjoy. Simplicity has it's charms - or maybe I'm just too simple to want more.

*Note that I'm not driving that far just for Arby's... but when travelling through a nearby city I often make a point to grab a double roast beef during the trip.

It's not so much the health benefits which I expect to be very marginal without changing your diet elsewhere also. Meat takes a lot of resources to make and cause a lot of pollution including greenhouse gases. Farmers are pretty invisible to the public when it comes to pollution. It's not helped that farmers tend to be a very irresponsible bunch when it comes to waste and water rights food or no food.

Cutting back a little meat wouldn't be the worse idea.

I tried the Beyond Meat burger at A&W on the weekend.  I should point out that A&W in Canada is a very different chain than the one in the US.  It's actually one of the biggest in Canada and it has really good burgers.  It is pricey however but regularly has mailer coupons.  The reason I got the Beyond Meat burger was my brothers and I had used up most of the good coupons and the Beyond Meat coupon was one of the few remaining and I had been curious about it.

It wasn't bad.  It was easily the best non-meat burger I've ever had but I'm not a vegetarian so I've eaten maybe three non-meat burgers in my entire life.  Basically the only time I've eaten them is when at a vegetarian's house and that's all that was served.  It did not taste like the real A&W burgers.  It tasted somewhat like you could pass this off as a beef burger if someone didn't have the context of beef burgers from the same restaurant.  The texture was a little too soft compared to real beef.  I also noticed how non-filling it was.  I wasn't as full as I normally am after A&W but aside from the burger patty everything was virtually identical to my typical meal there.  It kind of felt like I had eaten a rice cake that just happened to taste and feel somewhat close to an actual burger.

If I had some sort of beef intolerance this would be a decent substitute.  But since I have no reason not to order a real beef burger I will probably never order it again, unless it was on sale for $1 or something like that.

It's not so much the health benefits ...

All fair enough, but when eating fast food I admit that the environment is pretty low on my list of concerns. There is so much waste and pollution created in that situation already that it's hard to see how ordering a veggie burger does anything to change that... it's like doing a few sit-ups after eating a whole birthday cake and hoping things balance out.

Personal pet peeve:
McDonald's restaurants in my province don't recycle. They give you a bunch of plastic and paper containers each time, and everything is carefully marked as "please recycle", but you have to literally carry your junk home with you or just throw it in the trash.  I assume this is a local issue and not some kind of widespread policy...?

A&W here in Canada has done a really nice job though, with little things like reducing as much plastic packaging (including straws, etc) as possible and running a cleaner business. I agree with Ian Sane that it's a pretty decent choice if looking for a cheap burger (as long as you bring coupons).

Does A&W Canada have frosted mugs of root beer, cheese curds and grandpa burgers?

Yes.  I'm assuming by cheese curds you mean poutine?

My favourite item at A&W is the Mozza Burger.  Bacon, mozzarella cheese and thousand island dressing.  Oh yeah!

Same - it's awesome. Although sometimes I grab a Teen Burger when it's on sale.
Used to do the Double Mozza, but that's more calories than I need in a sitting these days (since I basically do nothing but sitting...)

Tried the Impossible Whopper today because the burger place I like is closed until Labor Day.

Not good. I don’t know how it compares to the regular Whopper because I haven’t had one in well over a decade. I recommend not judging the Impossible Burger on Burger King. Go to a non-chain. It’s all about how it’s prepared.

Also, Burger King sells tacos now. I tried one, and it was also a bad time.

I used to love the milkshakes from Burger King.
(Oddly, it was the only thing from Burger King I thought was even decent... but they were good enough I'd go just to pick one up.)

Burger King bought up all of the Impossible Burger supply chain for the time being.
so..... the only place to try an Impossible Burger is in an ImpossiWhopper (trademark pending)

I too also tried a BK Taco.... and um.... Jack in Box did it better.
but then again, I was sober when I at the BK Taco.... I don't think I have ever had JitB tacos while sober. LOL
That being said... the BK Taco was not good.
I did not try to disguise it with hot sauce or anything either.

Understood. However, you previously said “you get 1 chance to make me a believer.” I’m unclear if “you” was referring to Burger King or Impossible Foods. That said, when you’re inevitably disappointed by the Impossible Whopper, I beseech you to try the Impossible Burger again at not-Burger King. The Impossible Burger is a nice alternative. It’s my go-to unless I’m really feeling a beef burger.

I really tried to give the Impossible Whopper a chance because I wanted to like it. For some reason, it doesn’t come with cheese (it’s sub-Kraft singles territory so maybe that’s the reason) so I added cheese and bacon so it was made to order. The actual patty just wasn’t prepared well.
Quote
That being said... the BK Taco was not good.
The Crispy Taco is inexplicable. First, half of it wasn’t even crispy. Second, it can’t be that hard to make a taco. Children can make a taco correctly. That’s how easy it is to make a decent taco. For the Crispy Taco to be this bad, I feel like Burger King had to go out of its way to make a bad taco.

Granted, tacos are not the forte of a restaurant called Burger King, but if it’s going to put one on the menu, maybe out some effort in, right?

Considering I can only get the Impossible Burger patty at BK for the time being (and foreseeable future?), and they only get 1 chance to make me a believer.... I can either try it at BK or continue to ignore the meatless patty for being a meatless patty, until I can find it elsewhere.

Perhaps I'll ask for it to be "Flame Broiled" so that they have to prepare it fresh on the spot.

But honestly, I don't really eat at BK outside of breakfast.... so I'm perfectly fine with not having an ImpossiWhopper too.

Since “you” is referring to whichever place you try the Impossible Burger, I recommend waiting. If you have a non-chain, non-fast food burger joint, try it there. If you don’t like it at a speciality, made to order restaurant, then you sure as hell weren’t going to like it at Burger King.

I got a burger place I frequent.
they used to have it on the menu.... I informed them of pipeline buyout by BK since they kept telling customers that they are waiting on a restock, and they eventually covered it up on the menu.
I'm pretty sure I'll be waiting for a looong while if I decide to not take the Whopper vs ImpossiWhopper Challenge.

I too also tried a BK Taco.... and um.... Jack in Box did it better.

Wow, those BK tacos must REALLY suck.  Years ago Jack in the Box would include two free tacos if you ordered from their self-serve kiosk.  I started turning down the free tacos.  If I'm turning down free fast food then it is serious butt.

To me Burger King having tacos would be like Taco Bell starting to have hamburgers.  I know in the corporate mindset there's the idea that any meal eaten at a different restaurant is a lost sale but I go to different places based on what type of food I'm craving.  If I'm in a taco mood then I'm going to go to a place that specializes in tacos.  And if I want something else, I'm not settling for the taco place even if they have that item on the menu because they probably don't do it as well as a place that specializes in it.  There are tons of fast food places that are specifically burger restaurants and that's their specialty and they're great at it.  In theory Burger King could be such a place... but they're not.

All I really like about Burger King is the Whopper.  Much like the Big Mac it isn't something I get when I'm in a burger mood.  It's for when I'm in a Whopper mood.  There is a specific craving I can get for Burger King beef burgers and that's what keeps me a periodic customer.  But everything else pretty much sucks and their service is the slowest and most incompetent of any of the chains in my area by a mile.

I did try the BK Tacos a bit ago and they were not the best.  If I am not getting tacos from like a local Mexican place or Del Taco/Taco Bell then I will go with Jack in the Box tacos.

Has anyone tried the Popeyes Chicken Sandwiches yet? It is suppose to be better than their competitors but I haven't had one yet.

I still need to go to my local Culvers. I guess the thing with them is that there is a different flavor of the day and each store has a different flavor of the day from other local stores which is kinda awesome.

So it seems like the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich is sold out but there might be some stores that have them still. I think I am going to try my luck and see if I can find one tomorrow.  I also read some of the worst takes on Popeyes selling a chicken sandwich. This is from the comments section on one of my local news stations on FB.

There are two Popeyes in British Columbia.  One of them opened very recently and just happens to be 15 minutes from my office so I've been routinely getting it for lunch on Fridays.  The new chicken sandwich is not available in Canada.  Arrgh!!!

Chick-fil-A is great but there aren't any in BC and I think the closest one is in Lynnwood WA.  I stop by there if I'm heading to Seattle but that's like once a year.  Having something similar to their sandwich locally would be really nice.  I have no idea why they wouldn't have the sandwich at the Canada locations since everything else appears to be the same.

Thankfully there is a Popeyes in Lynden which is just over the border.  I'm much more likely to make trips to there or Bellingham than Seattle so I might be able to try the sandwich before the end of the year - if they aren't still selling out.

I broke a four year streak of no McDonald’s to try the McRib back in 2012. It tastes the way diarrhea feels. I hope that Popeye’s sandwich is better than the physical embodiment of unbridled sadness that is the McRib.

What kind of pizza do you guys recommend?

This was spurred by a recent Papa John's email advertising "Buy 1 Get 1"... but when you open the email it clarifies that after you buy one at full price you get one for just $10. This is horribly misleading in my opinion. The ad made me want pizza - but I'm probably going to be buying elsewhere.

(For what it's worth: I don't mind Papa John's pizza.  I disagree pretty strong with some of the politics and beliefs of the chain owner, but the food sits nicely in that "better quality than you'd expect given the price" category whenever a real promotion is active.)

You almost always gotta go with a local pizza joint.
Papa Johns - eh.
Dominos - ehhh
Pizza Hut - how the mighty have fallen.
Papa Murphys take and bake - I like the thin crust, but you gotta cook it yourself.
Round Table - classic American pizza but pricey

A lot of the time when I get delivery I go with either Pizza Hut or Dominos but when I want to sit down there is a place I like to go called Fired Pie which for one price you get a pie and any number of toppings you want.  A lot of the places around here charge by the topping which I don't like.    I have been meaning to try Mod Pizza and Blaze Pizza lately.  I think one of them is in dt Phoenix and the other one is by my place.

As someone who worked at Pizza Hut for years...my go-to is Dominos. Best/most consistent deals for the quality. And I adore the stuffed cheesy bread.

Pizza Hut Stuffed Crust is awesome when made right, but a lot of places just don't make it right, and I'm a little disenfranchised by them due to seeing how things work behind the scenes. I'd go to a different location, but will never eat at one I worked at, and I've worked at over a dozen of them in my area.

MOD is great, I equate it and Blaze Pizza to the 'Chipotle" of pizzerias, since you work your way down a make line and choose anything to add to it.

Costco pizza is by far the biggest bang-for-your-buck but it lacks variety. Great for parties though.

I find local places are hit or miss in my area. The costs for some of them is astronomical, and they aren't really worth the extra cost in the taste department. $20 for a basic pizza, $30 for a specialty is just too high.

There are two neat local chains called Farellis and The Rock. I prefer The Rock if I have a choice, and both are a little on the higher end of the price scale, but at least the food tastes like it is worth it.

Sadly, a lot of local pizza joints aren't worth visiting. Their pricing and quality tend to be out of whack most of the time - and when the quality is good they are often inconveniently located. [Or maybe I'm the one that inconveniently located? Either way...]

There is one that does really great stone-fired pizza. Their hours are terrible though, and to help save the environment (yay) they just don't offer take-out (boo).  Our local go-to tends to be Pizza Delight - it's a not-so-big chain that is only found (I think) in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. But you can only go to the same well so many times.

They should let you get take-out if you bring your own container.  Like you bring the box from the Dominos you had two weeks ago with the grease stains and the dried cheese in the corner and then they just plop their pizza right in there. ;)

One of the best places to eat pizza is a newly built Circle K. 6 months later though it's going to become not that great.

That is simply ignorant. Cardboard is compost-able (do NOT recycle pizza boxes), and trees are a renewable resource (most trees used for paper are harvested from tree farms). I wish people would actually get educated about environmental impact and recycling, because everyone is acting like we are in the 70's/80's with how we do things in relation to the environment.

How do they package leftovers, or are they refusing to let you take them?

Not sure; I've never had any. The food is delicious.

And what I said earlier probably isn't accurate - I'm sure they will let you do takeout, they just don't provide disposable containers so you have to bring your own (as others have suggested).

So despite my statements earlier I ordered Pizza Hut this weekend because the Dominos closed before they did and we were having a late night. Was reminded how much I enjoyed stuffed crust. Love how you can get toasted parmesan as an option on the crust. Pro tip: ask for that on everything you can; pizza rollers, p'zones, pizza crust, it makes everything 10x better.

This is a location I never worked at or visited before, and maybe it is because it is a newer location, but it was spot-on. Crust was stretched correctly, dough was not old, and no air bubbles or burst stuffed crust. I did pay $14 for a 3-topping stuffed crust, but was worth it, and less greasy than Dominos surprisingly, while still hitting that sweet spot you would want for greasy food.

I tried the Popeye’s chicken sandwich last night. It’s... a chicken sandwich. I tried not to get caught up in the hype. This thing made headlines by selling out everywhere and apparently someone was fatally stabbed for cutting in line the other day. It’s fine for what it is. I’d order it again even if I wouldn’t go out of my way to do so. May be a little greasy, but that’s to be expected from deep fried chicken at a fast food joint.

You know the Popeye's Chicken Sandwich stabbing, I almost feel like Popeye's is happy for the negative news.  I mean how many people are thinking, damn I need to try that sandwich if people are willing to stab someone for it.  But the truth is, there is NO WAY, that stabbing happened ONLY because two adults wanted a Chicken sandwich.  It's a CHICKEN SANDWICH, from a fast food place.  Adrock's review sounds exactly like what I would expect.

I mean it is interesting but I am not sure I would find it appatizing unless it wasn't in pizza form.  Maybe just have pizza toppings with ramen without the crust but then it would just be something standard.

Bread-on-bread dishes tend to feel off for me. Like too much of a carb overload. Most fried chicken sandwiches, fried mac-n-cheese bites and such just feel like too much for me. As BeautifulShy suggested, I would try a aamen w/ pizza toppings/flavors, or ramen ingredients minus the noodles on a type of pizza crust.

Regarding ramen pizza... I agree with others. I'd do pizza flavored ramen, but it doesn't work for me the other way around. Who wants their crust to be that soggy?

During my trips in China, pizza has always been a huge miss. The flavors and textures never felt "right" and trying to make it more appealing to locals almost always took away the things I liked most about pizza.

Even though pizza is my single favorite thing to eat, I would actively avoid it in favor of anything local while visiting China. My assumption is that preference would hold true for most other Asian counties.

I wish I had a Popeye's in my town. We used to have one, but it closed. Diego's is pretty good though.

I rarely do fast food anymore.
When I do, it's almost never fried chicken, as that's just too heavy and my stomach feels revolting afterwards.
However...I really miss Popeye's. There are none on my side of Canada, and unlike KFC and Dixie Lee it was always delicious without making me feeling like garbage afterwards (which, frankly, I never quite understood).

One of my top 5 fast food chains for sure.

For ramen pizza, maybe if you seasoned the sauce the way you would the broth, so it had that ramen flavor and then topped the pizza with other ramen fixings, then I could get on board.  Noodles on bread is an automatic no from me.

Someone mentioned Mary Brown's.  All I have had is the Big Mary chicken sandwich because they have a deal on Monday for it.  It like it.  It kind of reminds me of the Big Crunch (or whatever it's called) at KFC.  I haven't tried the straight chicken yet though.  They have wedge fries and I don't like wedge fries so I haven't fully explored the menu because the combo would naturally come with them.

Forgot about this. Yes, I'll give it a recommendation. First time I tried it, I liked it a enough to go back and after 2 or 3 visits I became pretty hooked by it and it is a favorite fast food place I like to frequent. I've introduced a few others to it and they all liked it a lot as well. I even had it for supper last Monday so I'm still going there 6 years later. Was in B.C. for awhile where they didn't have any franchises in my area. Had to go to KFC more for fried chicken offerings as they were pretty much the only game in town but at least KFC was offering Hot and Spicy chicken for awhile. Then they stopped and I moved back to a different place where Mary Brown's are prevalent. I've gone to KFC maybe two times since. I just feel everything is better aside from perhaps the wings. I still like how KFC does their hot wings.

Mary Brown's is a bit more money compared to KFC so that's their one disadvantage but since the taste and quality seems better, I'm willing to spend a couple extra bucks for it. Like any fast food place (or restaurant), there have been times when things were a bit off. Wedges/taters were overdone or not really seasoned. Part of the chicken in the sandwich seemed a bit dry/chewy. But those are exceptions and some of that I can chalk up to the time of day I purchased it, like 5 minutes before closing.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the wedges/taters. Last year, I ranked fast food fries in Discord during some discussion that sprang up and I considered them the second best fast food fries behind Wendy's. Of course, I also consider Macdonald's fries near the bottom so I may have a different mindset for fries. KFC's fries were in last place. For me, they are a big reason why I crave and keep going to Mary Brown's. Ian Sane mentioned not liking wedge fries but doesn't state that he's tried them. Complaining about something before he's tried it? That doesn't sound like Ian at all. ;D However, you can also get regular straight cut fries as well. You have the option for any meal to get fries or taters and there is no price change difference for either selection. No excuses for not trying out the menu more!  >:(  I do get that wedge fries can be a tricky thing to get right since smaller bits and pieces can get overdone and you'd hate to get a larger piece that is quite softened/cooked. I can't recall ever having a large wedge that wasn't done but I've had smaller wedges that were more overdone. Yet, I'm willing to put up with that because the rest of the wedges are very good and when properly seasoned with salt I find them transcendent. Usually when I eat fries, I put vinegar on them. Ketchup just can not compare. These wedges are a rare exception where I have no problem eating them plain. The coating and salt on them is enough. I have tried dipping them a bit in gravy or even sour cream when at home but they seem to take away from the wedges rather than add to them so plain it is.

As for the regular fries, I like them. They're about the middle of the fry spectrum for me. I usually find them more soft than crispy almost like they've steamed than fried. In the case of the fries, I'm still putting vinegar on them or dunking them in gravy (or both!) but I think they are better than McDonalds, Burger King, or Dairy Queen fries and way better than what KFC will offer.

I should get into the chicken now but that will have to wait a bit. To be continued....

Although I like the idea of wedges, I've never actually enjoyed eating them. Your comment about the difficulty in finding that perfect consistency due to different sizing might be why, or maybe I'm just not enough of a potato guy.

However, since they earned your recommendation I'll give it a shot and let you know what I think. Looking at the menu online, probably a 2-piece signature chicken meal is the way to go?  The buffalo chicken wraps also look good though.

Weirdly my favorite fries are probably Arby's curly fries... but I'm not even sure that they are good. A big part of my love comes from a tradition of only eating them during road trips, usually at least a year or two apart, and having nostalgia for the Arby's roast beef sandwhiches from when I was a kid.

Well I have tried wedge fries in general, just not Mary Brown's.  But I didn't know you get normal fries as well so now I'm thinking I should try that out.

Competition for fried chicken in my area is fierce though.  Aside from Mary Brown's and KFC we also have a Popeye's now and then there's Brownie's.  In the early 80's Brownie's was a chain in BC.  I remember as a very young kid eating at the Hope location during a trip to the Okanagan.  The chain had long disappeared until it was resurrected recently, by the old owner.  There are only two locations, in Mission and Maple Ridge.  They have regular and cajun flavours.  I don't like the regular but the cajun is fantastic.  The place also has no difference in charge between white and dark meat so naturally I always ask for all white.  The fries are also really good, soft potato with a flaky, crispy skin.  If you happen to be in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia and want fried chicken then I suggest checking it out.

Okay, so I had Mary Brown's for lunch today.  Got a two piece meal with normal fries.  And it was fine but not really exceptional.  I like the Big Mary sandwich and will continue to get that but the normal chicken lacked the flavour the KFC or Popeye's has.  It was much more subtle.  The fries weren't bad but didn't stand out.  They're just perfectly acceptable fries.

Jojos are a local delicacy that perfects "wedge fries" You cut a large russet potato in eight equal sized pieces, coated in seasoned fried chicken flour and fry in a pressure cooker like a broaster. You don't get the dry little pieces or the under cooked large pieces.

Colorado got it's first In-N-Out yesterday.

Apparently people just couldn't wait to see what all the fuss is about going to In-N-Out and waiting in lines for decently good burgers and absolutely terrible fries. animal style or not.

Considering there is a pandemic happening right now, and that you can find as good, if not much better food minus the wait practically anywhere else, this is absolutely ridiculous.

the lines were sooooooo long, other businesses were complaining about how people would suddenly show up in droves for fast food, but refuse to support the local businesses in a time of need.

Local PD had to plead with the locals to just go eat somewhere else.... In-N-Out will be here tomorrow... and the day after and 6 months from now as well.... smh

I have a couple of times waited for In-N-Out burger for around 3 hours or so.  The Langley Cruise-In is a local classic cars show and In-N-Out used to (maybe still do; haven't gone in years) have a food truck at it.  This was a big deal because at the time the closest In-N-Out was in Redding, CA, a good 12 hour drive and a border crossing away.  So we would get there early to get a ticket to wait in line for 3 hours.  We did this two years in a row and decided it was not worth it anymore.

But we were waiting for a one-day-only chance to get In-N-Out in our area.  We didn't wait forever for a location that was permanently going to be in our town.  When Popeye's chicken sandwich was creating a frenzy I had no interest in going out of my way for it because I knew that in time the locations in my area would have them readily available, which they do now and they're delicious.  I probably would show up at a new In-N-Out if there was one opening here (or in Northwest Washington in a post-covid world where I can cross the border) but if I saw a lineup wrapping around the mall I would get something else to eat and return at a later date.

So I've tried some of these chicken sandwiches for the War that Popeye's apparently started.

McDonald's..... Giant McChicken patty. If you love McChicken, you'll probably like this, but if you're looking for a real chicken Sandwich, this wasn't it.

Burger King Ch'King.... Not bad, but not great. I didn't get the spicy, and I should've. I'm sure that would've been better, but the regular one didn't entice me to try again. Popeye's is only another minute out two down the road.

Popeye's.... Still King.

Next up... KFC
And as soon as they open up the Chick FilA next to my, I might try that one too.

Taco Bell - Naked Chicken Chalupa (as close as they'll get).
Not bad, but immediately regretted it, as I haven't had taco bell in ages. It might be a while before I go back there again.

Had some from some chicken sandwiches from regular restaurants that were also really good, but as far as fast food goes, Popeye's still on top so far.

So I had the KFC Chicken Sandy and even though the sandwich itself was pretty good, I immediately recalled what I hate about KFC to begin with....

I'm at the window and the dude hands me a bag where half the bottom is soaked in grease.... I didn't want to set it on the wrong thing and get grease stains. Wasn't sure if it was the fries or the chicken, but either way that's an immediate warning sign to my arteries. LOL

So I got the spicy chicken, and it was just some spicy sauce that was on about half the chicken... so really, I got the Spicy and Regular Chicken Sandwich at the same time. No need to go back. LOL
It was a thick piece of chicken, never dry at KFC, and no crunch to the skin (for the same reasons it's never dry -see the bag-). It wasn't actually greasy or anything, that I could tell, but it was mostly in it's sandwich sleeve , so I don't know how greasy it might've been. It was good on flavor though.

Current Order of Preference:
Popeyes
....
KFC
...
BK
..
.
McD's

No Chick-fil-a on your list BnM? Or are they in an entirely different camp?

I like their chicken but the typical lines keep me away, and I tend to get hankerins for Chicken sandwiches (and teriyaki) on Sundays when they are closed so I don't go very often.

I have issues with Chik- fil-a just for their funding of anti LGBT bills.

With that being said I tend to go with Popeye's for chicken sandwiches and chicken in general.  Their biscuits are worth the trip in of itself.

I didn't go to Chic-fil-a since 2009 for the reasons listed above, I also wasn't too much of a fan as they were over-priced. McDonalds had that Southern Chicken sandwich and it tasted exactly the same and was cheaper.  But Chic-fil-A policies were reportedly improving since about 2017. My mom was really hungry one day in 2020, and figured an 11 year boycott was a long time.  Also, McDonalds had stopped carrying the southern chicken sandwich a while ago. I cracked. Their chicken nuggets are pretty good. Their prices are better than what they were.
I remember one time, around the time, maybe a little before the boycott was starting, it was a Sunday and they were closed so I went to Pollo Feliz instead.

I find it hillarious how the name could be translated.

I mentioned Chick FilA, they are building one next to me and I'll try it once it opens. The next nearest one to me is too far away and line too long to even entertain it unless I was randomly passing by and the line was short.

I thought their political policies were more driven by the former CEO who passed away? Maybe it was an assumption but I thought a lot of that support trickled off once he passed.

On the flip side I hear they are one of the better restaurants in terms of employee treatment/pay. Though again I'm wondering if that was an assumption I had due to their higher prices.

Bummer. I thought Chick-fil-a had moved on from that. Shame we aren't in the Parks and Rec timeline where Elton John bought them out!

I’m morbidly curious. I have to go into the office tomorrow so I’ll see if this is available at the nearby Arby’s.

There’s no way that’s actual Wagyu. It could still be good though.

Maybe if I have a cheat day in the next month from my half vegetarian diet.   I had one this past month so it can't be this week.

I tried the Arby’s bacon ranch Wagyu steakhouse burger.

I wasn’t sure how close to the pictures the patties were so I got the double to make sure I could adequately critique the quality of the meat. Ultimately, it was way too beefy (pun intended). If you want to give this a go, I recommend sticking with the single patty.

Arby’s Wagyu burger tasted like American Wagyu which I’ve had before. Without double checking, I believe American Wagyu is a crossbreed of Wagyu and Angus. To further drive prices down, I wouldn’t be surprised if Arby’s then diluted it with more non-Wagyu. I’ve never had authentic Japanese Wagyu because it’s hella expensive albeit apparently much higher quality.

Anyway, the burger itself is fine. This may have been the first time I’ve been to Arby’s since 2020. I probably won’t go out of my way to order this again though if someone offered, I wouldn’t turn it down. It’s a perfectly reasonable choice if you’re at an Arby’s. When I was there, I almost ordered something cheaper before reminding myself this was the only reason I was there. My go-to burger joint offers a much better Wagyu burger so if I was ever jonesing for one, I’d go there, not Arby’s.

Let me know if y’all have any questions.

I believe it was confirmed to be American Wagyu.

But what's your "Go-To" burger joint that offers Wagyu beef (American or otherwise)?

I seen a couple new and old Burger spots in the areas surrounding where i frequent, that i have yet to try out, so just curious the type of place you refer to as your "go-to" burger spot.

Burger Barr (https://www.burgerbarr.com/)

I used to live about 15 minutes away until I moved out of state. Fortunately, a friend lives nearby. I've only stopped in a few times since the pandemic.

Every time I've had Wagyu I've always thought it was just over-hyped.

My Aunt runs a dairy farm. Because of this she has cows that are meant for making milk that is used to make cheese. Every once in a while her cows get slaughtered. Her cow's meat tastes way different and I really like it. Also Buffalo doesn't taste as special as advertised either, though Angus does taste a bit different and is pretty good.

And all this of course is in hamburger form where it's all ground up. I imagine steak form is going to be notable.

Wagyu isn't ideal for burgers from my understanding of a single episode of Kitchen Nightmares that my TV seems to always play on repeat when I accidentally change it to whatever Samsung uses for a channel viewing mode, so I've watched it once or twice out of curiosity. It was the episode where Godron Ramsey is arguing with the owner who likes burgers and thinks that makes him an excellent burger restaurant owner and kept insisting his top tier Wagyu was the best burger meat ever. Ramsey was talking about how it is a quality meat but most of its positives are lost when in ground and grilled form in a burger. It is also so overpriced I just don't want to even try it. I'd rather spend my money on something else.
