The Wii just reached 30 million in the US, which is about one for every ten people. The fact that it's still maintaining sales despite the decreasing number of people to sell systems to is pretty amazing.

If this trend continues then the Wii is going to have another killer holiday season, which pretty much guarantees that the Wii HD isn't coming out until late 2012 at the earliest.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one thinking that 2011 is going to make a killing for Nintendo.

I'm ready for a new Nintendo system, and seeing as how the Wii is selling in third place and just barely beating the PS3 then Nintendo needs to start being ready for a new system as well. Look, I'm a Nintendo fan and have been since I was a kid, but that doesn't change the fact that Wii sales are on the decline. As soon as the PS3 move and that Natal thing comes out the situation is going to be even worse. You see how the Wii is barely outselling the PS3 right now? Well, keep that in mind and then imagine PS3 Move on top of that. Don't look good now, does it?

So Nintendo needs to start getting something ready that will be at least on par with the other systems so that they can get the same multiplatform releases of the same quality that the other systems get. Right now, the Wii either doesn't get any of those games, or it just gets some crappy watered down port. Clearly better hardware is needed, and the Wii has done very well, but I think its time is quickly running out.

PS Move isn't going to influence the Wii sales, it's aimed squarely at core gamers and those already have a PS3 (or a 360). Kinect will flop either way.

What are you talking about? You sound like those people who complain "the Wii is doomed" every time the Wii isn't the #1 console of the month. The Xbox 360 got a boost due to the slim revision, that's it. You took what happened in ONE month and assumed that it how the situation will be from now on.

What part of Wii sales are actually slightly higher then this time last year don't you understand?

This logic that you and many of the other "Wii HD in 2011 crowd" makes absolutely no sense.  At this point in the game releasing a new system on par with the 360/PS3 isn't going to do sh!t.  The audience that wanted the types of games those systems have like FPS and Sports games already bought those systems and would have no reason to buy a Wii HD just to get ports of games that will still arrive on the 360/PS3 anyway.

Not to mention the fact that anyone who hasn't bought a 360/PS3 yet but is interested in buying one for the types of games on those systems still wouldn't buy a Wii HD even if it started getting the same types of multiplatform games.  The reason is because the 360/PS3 would still have a much larger library of these types of games with many of them at much cheaper prices for anyone new to the system to buy.  Nobody would buy a Wii HD to play future games like GTA5, Modern Warfare 3, Resident Evil 6, Street Fighter Super Ultimate 4 Turbo Revival Ninth Strike, when you can get these same games on the 360/PS3 as well as their predecessors which will only cost around $20-30.

The only thing that would make a Wii HD sell is Nintendo's own first party software which is still selling amazingly well on the Wii.  People have been buying the Wii since launch for Nintendo own games and that's what's keeping the Wii alive and will continue too.  Nintendo's not at the mercy of third parties like Microsoft and Sony and as a result, as long as their own games are still selling, they have no need to release a new system so early.  And with upcoming titles like Wii Party, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Skyward Sword and Mario Sports Mix which are all guaranteed to be huge multi-million sellers, Nintendo is in no hurry to abandon the system at anytime next year.

So... is there no hope of Kirby's Epic Yarn selling a million copies? :'(

Oh I'm sure Kirby Epic Yarn will sell over a million copies like most Kirby games usually do, but no where near the same level as the other games which should all cross the 5 million mark easily.  Hell, I can easily see Wii Party breaking the 10 million mark since it'll probably appeal to the audience that made Wii Sports Resort huge last year.  Plus if Donkey Kong Country Returns is advertised right to remind people of the original Country game and to appeal the recent NSMBW audience it could also be a 10 million plus seller as well.

So Kirby will more then likely do really good, but not on the same level as the others.

Place Yer Bets People!!!!

The race to 1 million YTD is heating up.
Will the Wii cross that line first or will the PS3?

The PS3 is only 38k behind the Wii and has outsold the Wii by ~35k over the last 2 weeks.
Can the Wii maintain it's lead? Will the PS3 finally be able to put a feather in it's cap?
stay tuned.

Hell, I can easily see Wii Party breaking the 10 million mark since it'll probably appeal to the audience that made Wii Sports Resort huge last year.
I don't know, I have my doubts about Wii Party. I think it may end up similar to Wii Music; it won't have much appeal to the people who bought the other Wii series games, it's a game in the most over-saturated genre on the Wii, and it's going to get absolutely slammed by the gaming media. I'd guess 3 million tops (is Wii Music at 3 million? I forget).

Look, I'm a Nintendo fan and have been since I was a kid, but that doesn't change the fact that Wii sales are on the decline.
How would you being a fan change the fact that Wii sales are on the decline?

It doesn't. I just wanted to make it clear that I'm not some Sony/MS fanboy rejoicing in the fact that the competition is catching up. I just want Nintendo's consoles to have the same level of 3rd party support as the competition, but I can't see that happening unless it had a more powerful console. The Wii is selling well and Nintendo's own games are selling extremely well, but the Wii isn't the number one selling console anymore, and in a month or two it might even be the worst selling and I can't see how that can be averted, becasue its already the cheapest (not counting the 360 low-end model) console out there, so price cuts aren't going to help. What else can Nintendo do?

I agree, though I think we'll be looking at something like the sales of Wii Sports Resort: it'll perform admirably, but nothing exceptional compared to the other Wii ______ games.  I estimate that it'll probably hit around 5-6 million unit worldwide in probably steady but not particularly impressive bursts.  The genre is just way oversaturated and it'll have a lot of competition from Kinect and Move for media attention and advertising at the time of its release.

Again, you think that a TEMPORARY boost due to a new revision means the Xbox 360 has overtaken the Wii. At most it might get another small one in August, then the Wii will be back on top (like everytime the 360 or PS3 has gotten a boost). As Luigi Dude also pointed out, the Wii also increased year-over-year. I don't see what in the future will give any kind of boost to the PS3. Also, Microsoft doesn't actually have more than one model now (the existing Arcade and Elite have been discontinued and they are just selling off the remaining supply). So what makes you think that the Wii will suffer a drop in sales, that the PS3 will get a boost, and the 360 will keep its boost?

Wii Music didn't do as well because it got horrible reviews. Wii Play got mediocre reviews (but some good ones), but it was boosted by the fact that you get a free Wii Remote with it. Wii Play looks like a fun party game, I predict it was be very successful. I severely doubt that Kinect will be anything more than niche thanks to its $150 pricepoint and the lack of multiplatform games. PlayStation Move might be slightly better, but several of the Wii type games require two Moves controllers (meaning you need to spend $100 to play them).

Price cuts never help, they give a short boost of sales and that's it. What Nintendo can do is release killer apps.

I have to disagree with you there. When Sony cut the price of the PS3 down from $600 to its current $299 that did a lot more than just a "short" boost of sales. The less something costs the easier it is for customers to afford it and/or to justify making a purchase of it. It is highly doubtful that as well as the Wii is doing right now that it would be the case if the Wii was still priced at $249 as it was when it launched. But that only matters to a certain extent. When Nintendo marked the GC down to $99 and then to an unheard of $79 it didn't really help that much at all, but that was because it didn't have much new games at that late point in its life to really matter. So price cuts can help in some cases, in other cases they don't really do all that much though... but I think we can all agree that even if they never help sales very much they don't really hurt sales.

Eventually, Nintendo will lower the price of the Wii to $149 or even lower. Move and Kinect may force them to do that sooner rather than later. I hope it will help boost Wii sales similar to how Wii sales were boosted after the last price drop, but that remains to be seen. The severe drought of 3rd party and hardcore titles is still a major problem and price cuts aren't going to address that. So that's why I'm saying Nintendo needs to beef up the specs of its hardware at some point. If not right now, then certainly in the near future.

The difference between $600 and $300 is a lot bigger than the one between $250 and $200. I didn't buy a PS3 until it dropped to $300, and I don't think anything could have changed that, but I don't think a $50 drop is going to make any difference in the long run. After the initial boost they'll be back to where they were, except making less money per sale.

For the record I'm not saying a price cut is the answer, but I do think we'll probably see it happen this holiday season. If any one of the console makers cut the MSRP of their system you can be sure the others will follow suit soon after, and they all obviously want to get a sales boost for the holiday season whether its short term or not.

I think a new model of the Wii would do much better then a price cut. That is what 360 is riding off of. It doesn't have to be the Wii 2 just a revised Wii console. The issue with Wii isn't really games, or price it is just that the market has been saturated with 30 million Wiis so customers need a reason to double dip.

Also price cuts are mostly good in the short term unless they are a massive cut like the PS3 had which made the system from being completely out of many people's price range to being affordable.

I don't think that will happen though, I don't see either Kinect or PlayStation Move being anything more than niche (like how the EyeToy was or the PlayStation Eye so far).

KDR, price cuts only hurt revenue if they don't sell enough systems. For example, they will make more money selling 300K systems at $150 than they would 200K systems at $200 ($45 million vs. $40 million). The idea with price cuts are that they will get help them sell enough systems to make up the difference. They also just want to get as many systems out there as possible because they make money from every single game sold for the system.

Yes but realistically a pricedrop might sell a few hundred thousand units which is WAAAAAY less than what the Wii will sell over its remaining lifetime without one.
