I guess MK8 is keeping the WiiU affloat for the time being.  It makes me wonder how long that will last though.  Will it be an evergreen title like they hope?

It already is.  For the last month, the sales have been in the 15-20k range per week in Japan, which doesn't happen to the average game well over a month after release.  Plus the sales for last week increased from the previous week, two months after launch which is  a pretty telling sign as well.

It'll be interesting to see what next weeks numbers show since this week is a holiday in Japan, and Hyrule Warriors is released as well.  If last week which was a non-holiday and something like a Dragon Quest X rerelease could cause an increase, this week should cause a bigger one.

Given that the Zelda franchise isn't as popular in Japan as in the rest of the world, and the musou crowd is on PS3... slow your roll on Hyrule Warriors expectations.

Possibly. However its also possible that the Nintendo/Musou-crowd is simply under-represented since there hasn't really been an opportunity, we shall see I suppose.

And Nintendo isn't expecting it to. They're playing up the "obscure Zelda fanservice" angle.

It'll sell in the US with that, but not in Japan.  Only diehard Zelda fans will get this, or super diehard musou fans who end up buying a Wii U just to play this version.

"MILLION-MILE MARKERS: MARIO KART 8 CROSSES 1 MILLION, NINTENDO 3DS SOFTWARE HITS 40 MILLION"

Quote
Mario Kart 8 has now sold more than 1 million total units in the United States alone, becoming the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million). Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform. Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.

...

• Mario Kart 7: 3.48 million
• Super Mario 3D Land: 3.09 million
• New Super Mario Bros. 2: 2.28 million
• Pokémon X: 2.10 million
• Pokémon Y: 2.01 million
• The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: 1.39 million
• Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 1.36 million
• Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon: 1.33 million
• The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: 1.09 million

Four of the 10 best-selling software SKUs for July are exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS platform. This includes Tomodachi Life, which finished at No. 5 and sold more than 85,000 units in its second month, and Pokémon Y (No. 8), Pokémon X (No. 9) and Mario Kart 7 (No. 10). Those last three games appeared on the list despite being on the market for 10 months, 10 months and 31 months, respectively.

Nintendo of America still lists Captain Toad as on track for holiday this year.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/14/playstation-4-the-last-of-us-mario-kart-8-top-the-sales-charts

Wii U sales are even worse than I thought. Mario Kart is only the second Wii U game to sell 1 million copies in the US? That is absolutely pathetic. Not even Super Mario 3D World? Wow. As I recall saying would happen before though...PS4 is dominating. Also, according to NPD (where are the numbers?) console sales this generation (as in PS4 and Xbone) are 80% higher than they were at this point in the previous generation.

Ghosts still rule the roost.

The most interesting story is Hyrule Warriors first week which sold 69k. Compared to recent Warriors games on the far more well-established PlayStation 3, it does not compare favorably. Dynasty Warriors 8 (PS3) cleared 212k and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 (PS3) sold 274k in their first week. Other recent spin off titles (Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn and The Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2) had first week numbers north of 100k. Again, there are a lot PS3s in Japan so these comparisons are unfair.

Still, 69k doesn't seem like a bad number to me. I'm curious as to how big the drop off for the second week will be.

Hyrule Warriors sold about 80,000 copies in just under a week to be the best debut for a Musou/warriors game the gen. ( WIIU/PS4/PSV/3DS)
To put some numbers behind that:

Hyrule Warriors has the best debut of any Musou yet this generation by far.

Fist of the North Star, Gundam, and One Piece are insanely more popular then Zelda in Japan. Dynasty Warrior has a long established fan base. All on the PS3. Hyrule Warriors came rather close to the 100k range. It did extremely well for what it is.

I thought WiiU would catch ps4 YTD by the end of this year. But even selling 3x as much per week it still seems like Japan has moved on to portable pasture. Still, Smash is like the best selling fighting game of all time so it could close the gap somewhat.

But Wii U may end up being the winner of a fight where all of the fans have already left the stadium.

Nintendo care more about Japan than anywhere else, so they'd be happy with that.

Have they already confirmed this for a US release or is that dependent on Japan sales? This is one of the few games I am sort of interested in so if it doesn't get localized that changes things for me.

Hyrule Warriors, it's one of five games I want on Wii U and so if it doesn't come to US that is one less games to get.

http://www.siliconera.com/2014/08/22/hyrule-warriors-sold-just-57-shipment-japan/

Quote
Hyrule Warriors was released in Japan last week, and the game sold 69,090 copies in its first week. Japanese sales tracker Media Create reported today that the game sold through just 57.33% of its shipment.

Not a particularly good number to have. One of the enthusiast-inferred goals of Hyrule Warriors was to make Zelda more popular in Japan and Warriors game more popular elsewhere. It is an odd mix of different series and it's starting to look as if it is one that pleases neither of each series' fans.

Reposting days-late regurgitations of publicly available Media Create sales numbers written by "news" sites who don't the barest knowledge of the context of japanese sales is a bad form.
