The publisher targets a profit for next fiscal year as it rethinks the strategy for the struggling Wii U.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37353/nintendo-posts-annual-loss-following-below-expectation-hardware-sales

Nintendo has announced an annual net loss of 23.2 billion yen ($229 million, or £134 million) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, citing the lower-than-expected worldwide sales of both Wii U and 3DS, in addition to the retail markdown on Wii U in various territories, as the main factors.

The Wii U shifted just 2.72 million units over the last year, still missing the reduced forecasts Nintendo made in January, which means that lifetime-to-date sales since the system's launch in November 2012 sit at 6.1 million. This was compounded further by disappointing yearly software sales of 18.86 million units, in spite of titles like Super Mario 3D World, New Super Luigi U and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD all selling over a million copies.

The Nintendo 3DS fared much better despite also falling short of the company's targets, moving 12.24 million units in the last 12 months, taking the lifetime total up to 43.3 million. Bright spots on the 3DS software sales front include Pokémon X and Y, which sold 12.26 million copies, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which pushed 7.66 million copies, while Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team all crossed 2 million in sales.

In response to these figures - the second net loss in the last three years for the publisher - Nintendo is forecasting a profit for the coming fiscal year, predicting 12 million sales for 3DS and 3.6 million sales for Wii U. Referring to the latter system, the company said it would make efforts to "enrich the value of the Wii U GamePad" by releasing more software that took advantage of the controller, such as games using NFC technology and Nintendo DS releases on Virtual Console. However, the 3DS platform was identified as the primary area where Nintendo would "strive to generate robust profits" as it looks to build upon the established install base with further software sales.

On the topic of new and returning characters:

If effort is put in to make individual fighters unique and distinct from one another, I am up for any character to join the Super Smash Bros. roster. Even now, people are still bemoaning the presence of the Wii Fit Trainer, and while it was obviously not on anybody's wish list for newcomers, they have clearly given as much care and attention to this character as the rest. You watch a video of the Wii Fit Trainer in action and you will clearly see that their moveset is unlike any other character in the game.

It's the same with Greninja. I'll admit to not knowing who this Pokémon was until after the Direct finished, but while that sizzle reel of gameplay was going, I realised that I didn't care, because Greninja looks like an awesome fighter to play as - on first impression, far more interesting than Mewtwo ever was in Melee.

Hell, you could throw in the Urban Champion for all I care - if they made him into a fleshed-out, distinctive character that played well, who cares who he is or that he's from a rubbish game?

Players can now add their personal touch to the character's attacks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37109/upcoming-super-smash-bros-games-to-feature-moveset-customization

The option to customize movesets from a catalogue attacks will be included in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, game director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed during today's special Nintendo Direct.

Players will be able to make adjustments to each character's default moveset, with examples including a larger, slower Fireball for Mario, a more powerful but longer-to-charge Headbutt for Donkey Kong and a variation on Kirby's Swallow ability that instead freezes the opponent in a block of ice. These customizations can be employed in both local and online play, although only in the 'With Friends' sub-section of the latter mode.

More details on this brand new feature will be revealed some time in the near future.

Imagine the Subspace Emissary concentrated into one bite-sized, chaotic dose.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37100/smash-run-arcade-mode-unveiled-exclusive-to-super-smash-bros-for-3ds

A new arcade-style adventure mode called Smash Run was revealed as an exclusive feature in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS during today's Nintendo Direct presentation.

Supporting up to four-player multiplayer, the mode consists of a large, non-linear dungeon spliced together with environments and enemies from a smorgasbord of Nintendo franchises. Players are given five minutes to explore this level, along the way fighting foes, platforming and collecting power-ups for attributes such as damage, speed and defence.

In addition, special-use items can be collected and activated via the Touch Screen - according to game director Masahiro Sakurai, this was inspired by and functions similarly to Nintendo GameCube racing title Kirby's Air Ride. While exploring, players may also occasionally instigate unique stage events, such as having to survive a wave of Bullet Bills entering the screen.

After the five-minute time limit has elapsed, players will be placed into a standard battle with all of their obtained power-ups in effect, encouraging competition to find the best powers during the exploration phase.

The Smash Run mode will not feature in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with no word on a comparable mode appearing in this version of the game.

Now independent characters, these veterans come with a few new moves.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37096/zero-suit-samus-sheik-return-for-new-super-smash-bros-fighters-no-longer-change-forms

Zero Suit Samus and Sheik will feature as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, this time as completely independent fighters.

During today's Nintendo Direct, game director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that these fighters will no longer change form from Samus and Zelda, respectively -- a change from past games in the series.

Having previously appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii, Zero Suit Samus is now entirely separate, as opposed to only being accessible upon completion of Samus' Final Smash attack as in the prior entry in the series.

Her offensive move-set still revolves around her emergency pistol/energy whip, but she now sports jet-powered boots that provide improved mobility and recovery.

Shiek, who made her series debut in Super Smash Bros. Melee on GameCube, has new attacks, such as a close-range explosive known as Burst Grenade, which replaces her old Chain side-special move, and an acrobatic kick technique named the Bouncing Fish.

TalkBack / Re: Physical Games vs. Digital Games: The Face-Off

Andy Goergen will be covering the other side of the coin tomorrow, for those of you asking about balancing the debate. It's written as a fairly direct response to the points I made, so whilst I stand by my case, his rebuttal sheds some light on factors some of the physical advocates may not have considered.

And J.P., you troublemaker... we'll see who has the last laugh.  :P: :

Catch up on the origin story for the crazy soccer RPG series.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36570

The first title in the Inazuma Eleven series is available for purchase right now from the Nintendo 3DS eShop in North America and Europe, excluding the UK.

Developed by Level-5, the game began life on the Nintendo DS, launching as a Japan-only title in 2008, before spawning several sequels across multiple platforms. Three entries in the series were eventually localised for Europe but not the US, making this eShop release the first time an Inazuma Eleven game has made it to North American shores.

It is currently unknown if the UK will receive this downloadable version in the future.

TalkBack / Puzzle Platformer Stick It To The Man Coming to Wii U
« on: February 13, 2014, 02:49:33 PM »

Why is there a giant arm hanging out of that man's brain?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36546

Stick It To The Man, a puzzle-based platform game from Swedish indie developer Zoink!, has been revealed for the Wii U eShop.

Released late last year for PC, PlayStation 3 and Vita, the title follows Ray, a resident of a paper-craft universe who one day grows a magic arm from his head. This provides him with special powers such as telepathy and the ability to create objects with stickers he collects. Unique Wii U GamePad features include aiming the controller at the TV screen in order to scan characters and read their thoughts, which are then used to solve puzzles.

The Wii U version is being handled through a collaborative effort between Zoink! and British studio Ripstone Games, who are also bringing previously-announced indie titles Knytt Underground and Pure Chess to Nintendo's console.

Stick It To The Man will hit the Wii U eShop at an unconfirmed date this spring.

Sledgehammer Games joins the fray as the series switches to a tri-annual rotation.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36509

The developers behind the historically successful Call of Duty franchise will now operate on a rotating three-year release cycle, with Sledgehammer Games joining series stalwarts Treyarch and Infinity Ward.

Activision will continue to release Call of Duty games on an annual basis and they confirmed that Sledgehammer is in charge of this year's entry, but the publisher claims this change will allow each studio the increased development time they need to ensure a high quality end product.

"There are several advantages to doing this. The first is of course quality; this will give our designers more time to envision and to innovate for each title," said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg during a recent earnings conference call.

"Simultaneously, it will give our content creators more focus on DLC and micro DLC. Finally, it'll give our teams more time to polish, making sure that we relive the best possible experience to our fans each and every time."

Since the release of Call of Duty 2 in 2005, instalments in the first-person-shooter franchise have been released annually, with development alternating each year between Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Sledgehammer Games later become involved in 2011, assisting on the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 following major staff reductions at Infinity Ward.

TalkBack / Batman Arkham Origins DLC No Longer Coming to Wii U
« on: January 31, 2014, 08:43:04 PM »

Lack of demand for extra content means that the story ends here for Wii U owners.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36448

The Wii U version of last year's action-adventure title Batman Arkham Origins will not receive the previously announced downloadable content.

Users who purchased the game's Season Pass, which had been sold for $19.99 in North America and £15.99 in the UK, will receive a full refund to their Wii U eShop account.

According to separate statements released by both Nintendo and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the five pieces of DLC, which include two short add-on campaigns, were cancelled on Wii U due to a lack of demand for additional content on the system.

TalkBack / Lucario Joins the Roster of Next Super Smash Bros.
« on: January 31, 2014, 11:16:40 AM »

The Aura Pokémon will be even more potent this time, says Sakurai.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36447

Lucario is the latest veteran fighter to be confirmed as a returning character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U.

The Fighting/Steel Pokémon, who falls at #448 in the National Pokédex, made his series debut in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii, in which he was known for his signature Aura ability that increased his attack power as he sustained more damage.

According to a Miiverse post by series director Masahiro Sakurai, the influence of Aura has been boosted, making Lucario a particularly strong character when his damage percentage is high.

Lucario becomes the 22nd character in the new Super Smash Bros. roster, joining up with numerous veterans in addition to newcomers Rosalina, Mega Man, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer.

TalkBack / Renegade Kid Unveils Episodic Shooter Moon Chronicles
« on: January 24, 2014, 02:22:48 PM »

The depths of the moon will be explored across a long-term episodic model.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36407

Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid has announced Moon Chronicles, a first-person shooter for 3DS that will be released over several seasons, beginning with a remake of DS title Moon from 2009.

The first season of the game, which was outed earlier this month by a trademark listing, will be launched in four discreet episodes on the eShop over the course of 2014. Episode 1, priced at $8.99 in North America, will contain approximately 4 hours of content, while the subsequent three episodes, which will be released as downloadable content for the first chapter, shall cost $1.99 each and continue the story with around 2 additional hours of gameplay per episode. As a remake of Moon, this season will incorporate enhanced graphics and support the Circle Pad Pro peripheral.

According to the studio's co-founder Jools Watsham, the second season of Moon Chronicles is set to come out next year, and will feature entirely new gameplay and storytelling, separate from that of the original Moon.

In an interview with IGN, Watsham revealed that the game's episodic structure was inspired by television dramas.

He said: "We love shows that really cement the feeling where you watch an episode, you have a cliffhanger, and you absolutely need to watch the next one. That’s our plan for season two and beyond, [for us] to approach it in a similar way. ‘What’s the whole point of the season? Where do we start and where do we end up?’”

Moon Chronicles currently has a tentative release date of spring 2014.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Cuts Wii U Sales Forecast
« on: January 17, 2014, 03:27:28 PM »
Those who genuinely believe that the Wii U will be discontinued in the next 3 years have a fundamental misunderstanding of how Nintendo is run as a company and a business. They will see it through to the end, for better or worse for their financials. The Wii U is going nowhere.

TalkBack / Renegade Kid Files Trademark for Moon Chronicles
« on: January 15, 2014, 07:48:12 PM »

A new listing may have outed the Mutant Mudds developer's mystery project.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36367

Renegade Kid, the studio behind the Dementium series and eShop platformer Mutant Mudds, have registered a trademark for a new game titled 'Moon Chronicles'.

The trademark application, unearthed via NeoGAF, follows the recent news that Renegade Kidd had acquired the publishing rights to the Moon license after the conclusion of a five-year deal with Mastiff. This has contributed to speculation that it could be related to the company's 2009 first-person shooter, Moon, for Nintendo DS, although platform information for this new game remains unknown.

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham earlier teased on Twitter that the developer was finalising a playable demo for a new 3DS shooter, to be revealed during a press event at the end of this month. However, it was not confirmed whether this was an unannounced project, or whether this referred to Cult County, another of Renegade Kidd's upcoming FPS games for the 3DS.

TalkBack / Nintendo TVii Plans for Europe to be Announced Soon
« on: January 14, 2014, 02:54:13 PM »

It's been a long time coming, but Nintendo will have some news on the app shortly.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36361

The status of the much-delayed Nintendo TVii service in Europe will be announced "in the near future", Nintendo confirmed in a recent update.

The app, which has been inactive on the European Wii U menu since the launch of the system, was originally intended to launch in 2013, prompting Nintendo to apologise for the extended delay on their official website (discovered via Nintendo Life.)

Nintendo TVii was made available in North America and Japan in December 2012. The service connects with television providers and streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus to provide a library of TV content. Users can also utilise the GamePad while watching their program to look up information and reviews about the show, as well as share their thoughts on Miiverse.

Speedy buyers were able to make vast savings earlier today.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36360

Nintendo UK's digital store accidentally discounted numerous retail games to less than £10 for a brief time earlier today.

Between 1pm and 2pm GMT, the website was temporarily selling first-party Wii U titles such as Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 for £8.95 each, while 3DS games including Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team were priced at £7.95.

These huge discounts were quickly amended to their normal prices, but according to reports on social media, users who were quick enough to take advantage of these cuts did receive their redeemable download codes, indicating that these purchases will be honored.

At the time of writing, Nintendo has so far declined to comment on the situation.

The Canadian developer's future lies solely on Nintendo systems.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36337

Next Level Games, the makers of Nintendo 3DS hit Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, will develop all of their future games exclusively for Nintendo platforms, as revealed by Next Level co-founder Jason Carr.

The company remains an independent studio and has not been purchased by Nintendo, but it will now serve as a second-party developer, maintaining its close relationship with the Japanese giant.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Carr said: "All the stuff that we really focused on was very gameplay-centric; it wasn't massive RPG storytelling and all that. Nintendo has a very similar approach. So definitely, we like to make the same sort of games, so that's a good fit.

"And yeah, the stability as well. There are a lot of benefits to working with a first party. Nintendo's great. They give you the time to make the games good," he added.

Based out of Vancouver, Canada, Next Level Games first collaborated with Nintendo on Super Mario Strikers for GameCube, before moving on to its follow-up, Mario Strikers Charged, and the reboot of Punch-Out!! for Wii. Their most recent project was the aforementioned Luigi's Mansion sequel for 3DS.

Better late than never. Even if it is two years late.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36333/absent-guild01-game-weapon-shop-de-omasse-to-receive-localisation

Weapon Shop de Omasse, the fourth and final title in the Guild01 series of Nintendo 3DS games produced by Level-5, will finally receive its Western localisation this year.

The localised version was outed by a ratings listing from the Australian Classifications Board. A wider release to North America and Europe is currently unconfirmed but likely.

The Guild01 series was initially released as a retail compilation in Japan before being sold separately via the eShop in 2012. Three of the games - Liberation Maiden, Aero Porter and Crimson Shroud - were released digitally in the West that year.

However, the fourth title, then known by its Japanese name of Rental Bukiya de Omasse, was not released, with a Level-5 representative citing the difficulty of translating the large amount of text as the reason for its absence at the time.

Weapon Shop de Omasse, which was written by Japanese comedian Yoshiyuki Hirai, takes place in a father-and-son blacksmith business, where the player must complete rhythmic gameplay to craft weaponry for adventurers. The better they play to the rhythm, the more successful the adventurer is on their quest, increasing the rewards.

« on: January 10, 2014, 05:00:25 AM »

Dedede is coming right back at ya!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36332

Kirby series antagonist King Dedede is the latest veteran fighter to be confirmed as a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

The self-proclaimed king of Dream Land made his series debut in the last game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, on Wii, and like many of the returning fighters revealed so far, he appears to carry over a lot of his attacking moveset, including the Super Dedede Jump and the Jet Hammer.

The unveiling of King Dedede brings the current total roster count for the new Smash Bros. titles to 21 characters. This includes a broad selection of veteran fighters, in addition to newcomers Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man and Rosalina.

Phoenix Wright leads the way in Capcom's plans for 2014.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36294

A new instalment in the Ace Attorney franchise is one of several key games currently in development at Capcom, according to a recent group interview with the Japanese giant's senior directors and producers.

Takeshi Yamazaki, who directed Nintendo 3DS title Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, stated in an interview with 4gamer.net that the company had already begun working on the sixth entry in the long-running courtroom adventure franchise.

In this same discussion, Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi also confirmed another new, possibly unrelated, title being developed by his own team would be announced some time in 2014. Takumi has taken charge of the original Phoenix Wright trilogy and puzzle game Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective on Nintendo DS, while his latest project was Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, the 3DS collaboration with Level-5 that is scheduled for release in the West next year.

Other titles in development include a revival of a classic Capcom franchise, which is expected to be revealed next summer. This news came from Kenji Sugiura, who produced the Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara arcade combo pack that was released in 2013 on the Wii U eShop, among other platforms.

No specific details were divulged regarding any of these upcoming games, with more information expected over the next few months and beyond.

TalkBack / Zelda Returns in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U

The princess is back - and is it possible that she could bring a Phantom into battle?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36279

Princess Zelda has been confirmed as a returning veteran fighter in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Having been playable in both Melee and Brawl, the Hyrulian damsel retains her design from Twilight Princess, as opposed to the more recent Skyward Sword.

Among the images released on the official Smash Bros. was a shot of what appears to be Zelda controlling a Phantom from the Nintendo DS titles Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. However, it is also possible that the Phantom could be a new Assist Trophy character.

This news follows the recent reveal of newcomer duo Rosalina and Luma, who were unveiled during last week's Nintendo Direct.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36237

Franchise crossover game Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will launch in Europe on March 28, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS.

The title sees Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright drawn together by a girl named Espella, who is accused of witchcraft, forcing the pair to solve the mysteries of the city of Labyrinthia through a combination of the exploration, puzzles and courtroom drama that the respective Layton and Ace Attorney series are known for.

No word has been given yet regarding a release date in North America, thought it was confirmed earlier this year that the game would be coming to the US at some point in 2014.

TalkBack / Rosalina and Luma Playable in Next Super Smash Bros.
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:42:12 AM »

The Galaxy princess and her star sidekick join the fight.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36231

Rosalina and Luma, major characters in the Super Mario Galaxy series, have been announced as a playable fighter in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U.

This space-based double act will work together during battles, much like the Ice Climbers from previous Smash Bros. titles. Rosalina will use her wand for various physical and magical attacks, while the Luma becomes involved in a host of different special moves, such as firing Rosalina into the air via a launch star or acting as a mobile shield.

A new gameplay trailer showed the characters fighting on various stages, including the newly-unveiled Rainbow Road arena based on the recurring track from the Mario Kart franchise.

The Rosalina and Luma duo marks the fourth newcomer to be announced for the new Smash Bros. games, following the Villager from Animal Crossing, the Wii Fit Trainer, and Mega Man.
