Mario Kart Mafia
« on: July 04, 2008, 08:15:25 AM »
Work with your team to win, then stab your team-mates in the back!

I'm going to have a go at this, with the help of DaaMaan64. This is a normal mafia game but there is no mafia "powers" of sort. All players have will have items from Mario Kart Wii. They can be used on same team or opposite team. Use them to protect your team, target the green player, or protect yourself.

There are two teams, Red Team (Mafia) and Blue Team (Townies).
There is one green player.

Rules:
The role of red/blue is to defeat the other team.
The role of the green player is to cause mischief and strife in both teams.
Last remaining peoples in team win.
If green player remains, he/she automatically wins.
With the exception of the green player (who would automatically win if left undetected), everyone votes who to be best player at the end of the game.
All players will have 3 points.
Deplete points and you die.
Day/Night votes kill automatically.
The Green Player gets two items. Everyone else, one.

Items:
Red Shell - Removes one point from nominated person. Same day use.
Blue Shell - Removes one point from all opposing team. All weapons ineffective except Star and POW.
Banana - Protects against all offensive items except blue shells and POW. Single use. Deploy for next day. Will expire if deployed and unused.
Mystery Box - Removes one point from nominated person.
Coin - Restores one point to nominated person. Same day use. Alive players only.
Identifier - Allows user to find out who has what type of item. (e.g. "Who has the Blue Shell?"). Single use.
Cloud - Removes 2 points from owner unless one point is used to transfer to someone else. Cloud attacks after second day.

Team Specific Roles:
Lightning - Cancels all votes except for one nominated person. Can be used on same team or opposing,
Star - Invincible to all attacks for 2 days.
POW - Randomises all current votes and night actions.
Boo - Swaps the item of one player for another.

Details to be added soon. Signups and questions here.

I'm a bit skeptical as to how well this will work, but I admire the ambition.

Agents are go.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

In.

I would suggest that their be a few other possible items.

Lightning -removes 1 point from everyone playing the game excluding you.
Ghost-  removes an Item from someone else and gives it to you.  Prevents any attack from happening to you that day/night.
Finally, having somebody with possibly 3Xbanana, Coins, or Shells like Mario Kart would be cool.

I've done my best to put everyone into offensive or defensive roles. They become more complicated/layered because everyone's primary objective is to protect the team, but the secondary one to protect themselves. Unless you're the green player, in which case go in to just **** everyone else up first and win second.

I need some clarification here.  Are these items one-time use or can they be used every day?

All items (except 3x red shells or bananas) are single use. But you will be randomly assigned an item upon expiration.

I don't understand how this will work.  Everyone has 3 points.  Most items only have the ability to take away one point.  People are going to want to use their items early on for fear of dying before they get to use them.  That means that after the 2nd or 3rd day the only way to die will be to get voted out.

Did I miss something?

Well that is why you have to think and plan as a team...I think this game is going to be fast and furious...but with enough planning and scheming it will be exciting.

I would suggest giving us our roles a day or two before the game starts so people can start talking to people and scheming.

I think so. You will get a new item after the last one is used.

Remember this appeals to the random nature of Mario Kart, and how even though you may be good at it you can still be screwed big time.

This sounds like an idea I had for mafia once. An RPG mafia where everyone had hit points and one vote was equal to one damage point. But I thought it might stray too far from the original purpose of the game so I never proposed it. The way I saw the game working was that once the day was done, all standing votes would do their damage. If there wasn't enough damage to vote a player off, it just carried over to the next day. So, if everyone had 8 HP and one person got 6 votes, the next day he would be down to 2 HP making it a lot easier to vote him out and target a new person. So potentially, there could be some days with many weak players getting taken down. There might be some strategy in forcing weak HP players to vote with you or weak HP players may band together to get revenge on someone and cripple them. Throw in a few RPG items as roles and you are set.

Maybe I'll still do that 5 games from now.

For now, I'm in.
Whoever said, "Cheaters never win" must've never met Khushrenada.

This game is scheduled for the week of E3?  WHAT.  THE.  HELL.

Do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and delay this a week.  No one's going to have any time to give this game much attention.  It's an interesting concept, and I'd hate to see if fail because of timing.
