It is a Club Nintendo reward that is not dependent on you pre-ordering. When you register the game on the Club Ninty site you get the promo code that you then redeem on the eShop on the U.

If you did this for the free 3DS games earlier this year (Pokemon X/Y) or last year (Mario 3D Land, Luigis Manions and others) it works the exact same way.

I didn't because I don't yet own a 3DS, but sweet! I'll wait another week until pay day and snag it up. The hardest part is deciding which free game to get. I may settle for Wii U Party since I would never buy that, and would prefer to have discs for Pikmin and Wind Waker. We'll see though.

Oh, and thanks Stratos!

PS- Check your local ToysAreThem as they also have a deal for 40% off a second game when you buy MK8. Coupled with the free Club Nintendo game you could get three very nice titles for a very sweet price.

~

Pah! It was for pre-ordering only. I thought it was just for purchasing the game. Pity.

Target Canada

3DS XL - $100
Wii U Deluxe (no pack-in game) - $150
Wii controllers - $20
Wii Party U - $25
Windwaker (Wii U) - $25, although I think this is YMMV

A bunch of other games and accessories also on sale, although selection seems to vary depending on location.
Every gaming purchase gives a "$5 off your next gaming purchase" coupon.

This sale apparently went live yesterday, so stock is very YMMV because deal hunters went kind of nuts. But it's a great time to buy if you have a store with anything left nearby.  I upgraded to a new blue 3DS XL.

That's any purchase in the store giving you $5 off until August 1. Wonder if those can be stacked so I can load up on eShop credit for the price of a few packs of gum?

Target Canada deals

Wow!! I was at Target at the start of the week but I had no idea about those 3DS or Wii U prices. They had several signs in the Nintendo console display cases saying that some deal was not being offered at this location, so it must've been about that.

I did see some of those decent prices on games, though. I picked up SM3DW for $40, Lego City Undercover for $25 and Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy for $21. Wii Party U was also $25 at my location, but Wind Waker was regular price.

I went to Target to look for those AR eShop cards, but didn't see any.

And for content, the Yoshi 3DS XL is $159 on Amazon.ca. Not quite as awesome as a $100 3DS but alright!

Too lazy to post a link but Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag is $19.99 at GameStop, $17.99 for a used copy. They have a bunch of cheap Wii U games...cheaper than the eShop.

Nintendo's online store has refurb Wii U systems packed with Nintendo Land (console cannot be used with Club Nintendo) for just $200: https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/po/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?productId=prod150200

I made the jump and went for it. There's a long wait time for them to get a system and ship it, though, I've been waiting a few days and mine hasn't shipped yet.

Ubisoft games are on sale at the eShop but the only good deal appears to be "Rayman Legends" at $20. Everything else looks to be cheaper on retail.

Update: About a week after I ordered, I was surprised to see my system arrived already. The website still said "Order Processing", but if I clicked through, there was a UPS tracking number that showed it shipped pretty much right away.

Unfortunately, I plugged it all in and booted the system up and the image on screen was a flickering mess. Probably a bad HDMI cable, but maybe the system. After a call to Nintendo, both those things will be back on their way to Redmond (actually East Syracuse, NY) today. I can try again in one to two weeks when my repaired refurbed system comes back to me. Disappointing.

Wait, you didn't get another HDMI cable to verify if it was your system or the cable it came with? You probably could have avoided sending it back and waiting another 3 weeks if you had done so. Based on what you said, I can almost guarantee it was the cable.

I don't own any other HDMI cables. I could've done what you said, but not worth the money or effort from my perspective. Personally, I can wait.

Toys R Us is having sales according to a friend; haven't been able to confirm in-store deals myself, but I checked online and for those interested:

Ninja Gaiden 3: $29.98

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag $17.98

Splinter Cell: Blacklisted $39.99

Tekken Tag Tournement 2 Wii U Edition $19.99

Disney's Epic Mickey 2 $3.99

UPDATE: I checked out my local TRU, they're having clearance on the following Wii U games;

007 Legends, AC:IV Black Flag, COD: Ghost, and maybe one other that I can't recall (sorry). All were listed at $18.00 but the single game I bought rang up to $15.

I thought it odd that Splinter Cell is on sale on the website but not in-store, and there was just no sign of Ninja Gaiden 3. Oh and I noticed a FIFA game for $4

Darksiders 2 is $20 on the eShop. Considering it's still $50 on Amazon and $60(?!?) on Gamestop, it's a good deal.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is officially down to $29.99 on the eShop on a permanent basis, and is actually currently down to $22.49 on sale, so unless you've gotta have the physical copy that TRU deal isn't that good.

I realized today that sales on video games are like crack to some gamers. Myself included.

There's no reason someone my age who has no children should be in a TRU this time of night. Not when there are more adult options, like Best Buy. Luckily I displayed will power and only bought one game.

Oh, and I asked the sales person when the deal ends, she said "until the end of the summer."

edit: prior post updated with in-store sale price.

This a is why I stay off of Steam. I don't even pay goes on the computer, but I'll be damned if I pass up something that sounds good at a really good price.

I just budget some cash every month for game splurges and go to town. I made an entire sub-budget for my games because I plan out months in advance what I will buy and throw in a little extra for "deals" that come up. With some games being "must buy day one" I have to be careful my splurges do not blow my chance of buying a very important title later in the year.

I break up my planned purchases into Legacy, Current and Bargain categories and each game is ranked based on my desire to own them and what the "price sweet spot" is for when I bite on deals.
