Title: Dragon Quest Builders - Welcome to MineQuest

This game is life. This game is love. This game is a story driven Minecraft!

This is hitting my groove like nothing else since Mario Odyssey. I built a treasure room and a salad on a table and blue portal!

The demo is pretty good. You should get at least two hours of playtime if you're into it.

I was getting super excited for this game, but then I discovered there is no multiplayer. Maybe we will get a sequel with multiplayer and shared worlds?

Good News, Dragon Quest Builders 2 has up to 4 person multiplayer.

Nice! Local and online I hope?

I tried the demo today and it really seems like a blast. Some of the mechanics felt odd, but I was getting used to them after an hour or so. May pick this up in spite of being a solo game. Hopefully 2 comes out soon.

I bought the game and I have been liking it very much, But I kind of get the feeling the game will be longer than I really want it to be. I have put a decent amount of time into it and Im still only in chapter 1.

Also, Splatrick is the best character.

Just completed Chapter 2, I really liked how the mission and purpose of your base was very different from the first Chapter. I've read people complaining about the fresh start after each chapter, but I think it works.

That's how all DQ games are, though. A bunch of isolated vignettes strung together with some vague, overarching narrative.

I think there is a hint of a theme going on with each chapter so far.

Chapter 1: Europe
Chapter 2: Japan
Chapter 3: Australia

There's a lot that I could say about this, but if you have inexperience with the series, it's best if I didn't.

Only other DQ game I've played is a few hours of VIII. Now I'm curious. I will ask you about it when I beat the game.

I have 55 hours in and I think I'm only about 2/3rds done with the story. Don't play video games kids, it wastes your life!

Chapter 3: Australia

Australia doesnt have volcanoes, so the lava doesnt make sense for that

To be fair, many Japanese people consider Australia to be a hell-pit of suffering and horror.

After 85 hours, I am done! It was a lot of fun. Chapter 4 starts out strong but ends a little weak I think. I'm hoping things are polished in the sequel.

Pros:
Lots of Satisfaction building
Even with limited mobility, it feels good to move around (probably due to 60fps docked)
Charming art and writing for the characters

Cons:
Combat is not great, limited range and the hit damage and detection on enemies can be frustrating
Quests are not recorded anywhere and you can trip over yourself if you get too far ahead of the storyline
I didn't mind starting over for each chapter, but losing your previous recipes was annoying

Nice! I've been interested in getting this on Switch, but I really can't justify it right now when it's twice as much as the PS4 version. With Nintendo publishing it in North America, I doubt it'll get a significant price drop, but I'm sure retailers will put it on sale at some point.

I'm a bit surprised at just how positive the reception for this game has been overall. I expected it to be received well based on what I read of the PS4 and Vita versions, but it seems like pretty much every person who has picked this up on Switch really likes it. The sequel isn't far off either!

I finished it at a bit over 50 hours. I liked the game, but I really do think it was too long. They could have cut chapter 2 and 3 and left 1 and 4, which are the best two chapters.

Im not sure if I want to get the sequel currently being developed. I will have to wait for reviews.

I would rank the chapters 1,2,4,3

I really got into the building aspect, but if you were more focused on the story and adventure I could see where it got too long.

I liked the building side of things, but I really only did the minimum required. I never maxed out the base level either.

So DQ Builders is based on the world map of the original game, which had each "vignette" in its story based off of a different region/continent/world culture. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I spent about 55 hours with this game and loved it. I do have a few nitpicks though.

-As mentioned before combat could use some polish.
-The hunger system provides a small challenge early in maybe one chapter and then becomes more of an annoyance than anything.
-Camera also needs polish, especially when dealing with walls and roofs.

In the previews for the sequel I see they still have the hunger aspect, which is my biggest gripe, but I’ll still buy it. This was my best purchase since Zelda (or maybe Splatoon 2).

This game is second only to Breath of the Wild as far as hours put in on Switch.

The hunger system is kind of a desperate struggle in chapter 3 and a bit in chapter 4. The food buff are a nice touch and are fairly powerful, so it's not terrible IMO.

The camera needs to change to first person in buildings or they need a better system for fading out the structure in front of you.

Agree on the camera/interior bit. I built my first house with a full roof and it was a pain to use after that. I could force the camera inside for a close view, but it was still not an ideal. Ended up taking off the roof of the house. Wondering how taller structures will work in the game and hoping the sequel does a better job. I may just pass on this one and wait for the sequel. Depends on how my Summer purchase lineup goes or if I find a good sale.

Also, in DQ Builders 2 news, they are introducing angled blocks and first person perspective. First person mode will come in handy for inside buildings.

Angled blocks? Thats an interesting change.

Even though I liked the game, I dont want to play the sequel any time soon.

Just beat Chapter 3.  I tend to be unable to play this in short bursts, I've missed my stop on the metro recently because of the second boss fight.  Also, missed a few bed times.

I agree that the combat could use some tweaking.  As for the hunger mechanic, it does get to be an annoyance once you can make enough food to carry a might-as-well-be infinite supply.

One thing about Chapter 3 is that it was tough for me to get to the colossal coffer.  The wood supply being limited until the second teleportal, when there are so many materials to gather made the first part annoying to me.

And I'm really digging the variety in the objectives for each chapter.  Makes each one feel unique.

Well people, the much anticipated Sequel is out now in Japan, and there is a demo! I downloaded it and was able to muddle through despite not knowing the language.

It starts out different than the first game, more story focused. You're a prisoner on a ship, then you end up on a mystery island with another guy who helps you in whatever you are doing. I get the impression that having your squad help you gather resources is a big focus in this game.

The controls and menu are revamped, not sure I like the new style as much, but I would need to play the game more to know for certain.

You don't seem to be a master builder, but you have recipe book of sorts that you store things you can build. I gathered more resources and new recipes didn't appear, so I'm not sure if that's a limit of the demo.

Can't wait for the full version to come out in America.

I have the first one sitting on my shelf, but keep putting off playing it. I plan to get the sequel because of the multiplayer, but would like to go through the first one before that happens. Really like what I have seen so far.

You should! It's a really good game to just sit and play for a while or even pick up in short bursts.  Once you get into it, it really hooks you and you could probably move through it fairly quickly.

I did this weekend, and I have not been able to put it down. It has most everything I wish was in Minecraft and then some. My wife and sister are intrigued by the game, so looking forward to the sequel with multiplayer even more.

What is the story with the first abandoned castle you can find just past the Hammerhood Heights? Where you learn how to build the spiked wall defenses? You come across multiple warnings of how horrible that castle is, but you show up and find two ghosts and an incomplete version of Cantlin Chronicles. The was a note nearby in a cave with a corpse talking about how they barely escaped, and a note in the castle from a kid worried about people disappearing and how the 'adults' had summoned the author and was worried about why they did. Did they resort to cannibalism or turn into monsters? I'm tempted to just start digging under the castle and see if I find anything else.

For complaints, I just wish there was a bit more control to how you build. Giving a first person perspective would have fixed this. It is frustrating when you can't quite aim where you want for digging or building. Also, there needs to be a better way to quick move items back and forth similar to Minecraft. The QoL features make using controllers so much better in MC, and I actually prefer using a controller with MC over a mouse and keyboard because of them. Give me some of those QoLs for Builders and I will be very happy.

I do love how you get the uber chest and extra items go straight to there when you run out of space. Also, automatically pulling mats from your chests in town when crafting is so convenient.

I think the first abandoned castle is Cantlin. Cantlin was a city that had a Golem that protected it. It's from the mainline games: https://dragonquest.fandom.com/wiki/Cantlin

Read a preview of the sequel (http://"https://gamingbolt.com/dragon-quest-builders-2-will-have-online-and-local-4-player-co-op-launches-this-december-in-japan") and it sounds like all of my complaints will be addressed. Adding a first person mode, improving combat, local and online multiplayer, more of all the good stuff, swimming and flying, water manipulation and crop growth.
