Just got a Vita. Recommendations?
« on: October 02, 2013, 12:24:14 PM »
So, last week I took the plunge and got a Vita. It came with The Walking Dead and I also picked up Persona 4 Golden.

Are there any other essential games you folks recommend that I pick up?

Broodwars will have some suggestions.   Shaymin recently got a Vita as well but I don't think we did those on the air.  If we did it be NFR 23.

I had coupons for it and the price drop with the game helped me decide. I have PS Plus and really like that they have PSP and PS games available too.

"Abso-tively Poso-lutely!"

Here are a selection of other games I would recommend on Vita in addition to the games you already got on Plus:

- Rayman Origins (currently free on PS+) and Rayman Legends (2D platformers)
- Killzone Mercenary (FPS)
- Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (3D platformer. Also Cross-Buy if you get the PS3 version)
- LittleBigPlanet Vita (2D platformer)
- PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (Smash Bros.-style brawler. Also Cross-Buy if you get the PS3 version)
- Soul Sacrifice (Monster Hunter-style game, but more accessible)
- Lumines: Electronic Symphony (Tetris-style musical puzzle game)
- Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (Mario Kart-style racing game)
- Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (PSN - Visual Novel)
- Pinball Arcade (PSN)
- Zen Pinball 2 (PSN)
- Dokuro (PSN - platformer/puzzle game)
- Guacamelee! (PSN - Metroid-style game)
- Thomas was Alone (PSN - Indie 2D platformer of sorts)
- DJMAX Technika Tune (PSN - Korean music/rhythm game)
- Escape Plan (PSN - puzzle game)
- Resistance: Retribution (PSP 3rd person shooter)
- Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP strategy game)
- Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP strategy game)

There. That should keep you busy.  :P:   There are more games, but those are the ones I can more easily recommend.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

Consider getting Gravity Rush (Vita).
Also, Valhalla Knights (PSP) is free to download right now - so there is no reason not to grab it.

Other suggestions:
* watch the PSN Blog for store updates on Tuesdays. Sales are a regular event, so you are probably better off not buying too much in advance since it might get discounted.
* consider a PS Plus membership if you don't already have one. I was a skeptic originally, but it has consistently offered solid value as long as you don't mind digital goods that are tied to a subscription service.  Missed the part where you clarified that you already have PS Plus. Good move.

Why Broodwars didn't say Persona 4 Golden is beyond me. Best game on the system, imo.

These definitely sound like games for me. Thanks! I really wish Dragon's Crown was cross-buy because that looks great as well.

This year has had the best game releases on every platform.

I would recommend a larger MC if you don't have one.  BestBuy is having an sale on the 32 GC card ($45, sale price of $65-$20 gamers club coupon--which is free to join).

If you plan to travel with it or just play at home?  I tend to DL fighters since they're the perfect game to carry with ya at all times since rounds are less than 2 minutes.  You can get Mortal Kombat, UMvC3, SFxT, DoA5U, ect pretty damn cheap.  I would start with MK9 since there's decent SP challenges and modes.

So, I just got a Vita as well from the RadioShack deal going on now( $160!!).  I've got it registered and have about 8-10 games for it currently through PS+. I'm excited to get in on the goodness while it's still new, but I haven't turned the system on yet because I don't have a memory card.

These mem card prices are insane.

I'm an all digital guy (PC, WiiU, 3DS, PSPGo) and I plan on doing the same with Vita, especially given that the entirety of my current library is composed of free PS+ games.  I understand that I'm not gonna be able to fit all my games on the system over time and I realize that these games are much larger on average than those on 3DS ( a large 3DS game clocks in around 2GB where the Vita equivalent is closer to 3.5GB).  I have a 32GB SD for my 3DS and have plenty of space with lots of games. I won't settle for anything less than a 32GB vita memory card as I think it would be pointless to by lower... BUT THAT PRICE!?! Right now, I can get a 32GB vita mem card for $73.26 off Amazon which is crazy (and ironic that I got a 32GB SONY sd card for my 3DS for $20 from Amazon this past summer).

I'm currently scouring blackfriday ads in hopes of a sale for the 32GB cards, but all i see are the 8GB cards for $10 at Gamestop on black friday.  That's cool for those who only want to use the card for saves and DLC, but it's a wast of money otherwise for me. I'm thinking if nothing pans out during Black friday weekend, I'll just bite the bullet and grab the one off Amazon.  Fortunately, I'm in no rush to do anything with the system as I have my 3DS hogging all my gaming attention in the handheld space.

What size cards do you other Vita owners have?

Any indication of when that will be? And is there an official 128GB card?

A few weeks ago, I got paid early and got a 32gb card. I held out for Soul Sacrifice since it's now on PS+. So now, with digital and physical games, I own:

The Walking Dead
Sly Cooper
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Assassin's Creed Liberation
Persona 4 Golden
Hotline Miami
Soul Sacrifice
Wipeout
GTA: Liberty City Stories
and etc. digital PS+ and playstation classics.

Really loving and hating gaming right now. So much great stuff, so little time, and SO MUCH MONEY TO SPEND!

Hello, just wanted to chip in on the Vita recommendations.

OMG Z is far and away my favourite Vita game and you can get it in 3 wallet friendly flavours (original Mini, Playstation Mobile remake or the full HD Vita version - which does have micro transactions). Check out the reviews that the mini got on metacritic, it really deserves a lot more attention then it has had imo.

I also can't recommend enough Tales From Space: Mutant Bob Attack. One of the best platform games I have played in years. To my mind it is a much better experience then Guacamelee (same dev), which is why I am in the minority who found that game disappointing. I liked it ok and I beat it but it's certainly not my Vita game of the year (Hotline Miami gets that honour).

I second the recommendations for Lumines and Sonic Racing, both solid games.
Urban Trials Free Style, Sine Mora and Velocity HD are all pretty solid games, cheap and well worth a look.

I've got 50+ titles in my Vita library now (does include some PSP and PS1) and it really is an excellent machine. PS+ totally offsets my moaning about the price of memory cards.

Still prefer the 3DS catalog though ;-)

I got Dragon's Crown in a previous sale and also really wanna get Mega Man Maverick Hunter X but I really should beat the games I own now first. The tragedy....
