Fair point, didn't realise you already owned the HD port  ;)

Surely the next Nintendo hand held has to had an HD screen. Right now the 3DS is the only portable device in my (current gen) collection that doesn't have one. Apple also makes a profit on all their hard ware and they are managing to sell ipod touches with beautiful screens just fine.

Admittedly making statements like "Surely the next Nintendo console must have (insert modern tech feature) because it's already an industry standard" is an exercise in futility.

What a great piece! I really enjoyed reading this. I won't be getting a Wii U at launch but I KNOW that given time and a proper Mario/Zelda/Star fox/F Zero game I will be there. Despite the lousy the eshop and online may or may not be.

55
Oh, and for the record, my favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger.

Just out of interest Glad0s, how did you get into Chrono Trigger? Was it through the press coverage of the DS remake/Virtual console re issue, a personal recommendation, or something else?

Nice show everybody. But I do think you are going easy on the Wii U. I'm interested to see how it sells here in Europe because the basic console is £70 more expensive ($113) then an Xbox or PS3 and twice the price of a Kindle Fire or Nexus 7. I think the price is too high and the appeal to specific to be a massive hit in Europe right now, although I expect it'll do better then flippin Wonder Book!

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Will Be Region-Locked
« on: September 24, 2012, 10:33:06 AM »
I'm surprised to see so many people expecting a Wii U hack like it's a very simple thing to achieve. I guess everything does get hacked eventually, but nobody has got home brew or multi region stuff to run on 3DS yet and it's getting on for 18 months now. I loved tinkering with the Wii so I hope Wii U and 3DS user hacks aren't too far off, but it certainly seems like Nintendo have learned how to tighten things up.

Personally I have some peeps for local multi player but not for online multi player. Takes all sorts!

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo 3DS Firmware Update Available
« on: September 21, 2012, 05:39:15 AM »
The last update was a bit of failure, as I recall not all flash cards were blocked and some teams had their updates out within days. Although it is true that Acekard still haven't officially released an update. From the looks of it this update has blocked all the flash cards straight out of the gate. But I doubt the hackers have reached the limited of exploitable DS games to fool the 3DS with just yet. The system has such a big library. So I expect we'll see another update before Christmas, regardless of Miiverse.
It would be nice not to have updates with no appreciable user benefits every couple of months though, or better still, if they started to bundle useful tweaks along with the flash card blocks more often. It was the same with this weeks Vita update.

I think Darth makes a good point about White ipads, etc. And I don't remember Nintendo complaining about sales of white consoles when they launched the DS Lite. It all sounds like Reggie doing his best to justify a decision that was made in Japan to me.

I actually like how it looks better than the original. Not sure how comfortable it will be with that tapered edge. Do hope it comes westward.

Hey, put me right if I'm wrong but aren't the God of War Origins games up rezed ports of PSP games that do work on the Vita? I would like remote play of the Uncharted trilogy though. Very very much.

I'm almost done with it. I'm not the biggest fan, but I appreciate the fact that it basically set the baseline for a LOT of modern games...most notably Tomb Raider (the new ones) and Uncharted.

I'm considering buying FFVII specifically to have something to play on my Vita.

Funnily enough, I just did exactly that myself.

AND WHILST WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT OF CONSOLE LAUNCHES.
I have grown to loathe the expression "launch window". 6 months is a pretty big window.

It's actually about 4 months for Wii U, not 6 months. As for the UK price, blame UK retailers since Nintendo decided to not even give them a recommended price, but instead just let retailers pick what price they wanted.

It's 4 and a half months at the least. That is over a third of the financial year, still a pretty big freakin window if you ask me. Sony is just as guilty of protracted "launch windows". It is a phrase that has started to grate on me and one I'm bound to hear a lot next year. Pity me!

But more importantly - what are you talking about?  It's not that Nintendo decided not to give an RRP in Europe - they are not allowed to set a European price after they were fined for price fixing in the region:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2375967.stm

What they DO set is the price per unit that retailers pay, £205 for the basic pack in the UK:

I just wish there was some way to make these people eat their words when they end up being proven wrong. They should get fired or something. Its very frustrating that they can say all this **** and get away with it.

"You thought the Wii would be a flop, your kids deserve to sleep in a family sized card board box!"

Hmmm, I'd be pretty upset if I got sacked for publicly expressing an incorrect opinion on the industry I work in.

I think the lesson from this thread is that some journalism is worthless. Water is wet. Fire is hot. The internet breeds extremities of opinion, etc.

Some times I wonder why I bother with forums......
to those who disagree with my title "The Sun slams the Wii U" - I have no patience for your pedantic despotism. I think that statements like "Wii+DS=Fail" and describing the Wii U as "drastically over priced" constitute a slam.
Please note my use of the term "I think" and accept that yours is not the only opinion of worth on the whole internet. Several UK game sites picked up on the story too, CVG described it thusly:
"...to categorically instruct readers to not buy a new console - one built by the most experienced console maker in history, no less - is pushing things a bit far."

ANYWAY. I shared the Sun piece because it is very badly written and shows little understanding of how the gamepad works and what it does  (even less of how the Vita works and what software is available for it). Which I found funny. A bit annoying too, but mostly funny.
So far as I can tell just Little Big Planet 2 and 4 PS2 HD remakes offer similar features to the Gamepad when used with a Vita - and that's it. It's all an experiment for Sony and there are no other announced games that are planned to build on it, yet. Compared with all of the Wii U launch window games using Gamepad features in some way, and with it being a core aspect of the console (which the Vita will never be for PS3 owners) all future releases are likely to continue to support it. Again, I am a Vita owner and I like it. It ain't a Gamepad.

I do think that Wii U is over priced, but not "drastically" so, I will follow the Sun's one decent piece of advice and wait to see if there is a price cut next year. Also, they are right about the lack of decent exclusives (so far anyway).

MUCH AS I LOVE TYP.... (great to hear him on the show again btw) I have to disagree, sort of.
I don't know about dollars but £50 either way on the price of a new console definitely effected me this time. I read the announcement on my phone, went straight to Amazon UK to check the price - £200 for the basic system and I was in as soon as I had the cash. Then it went to £220, still okay. But at £250 I am out.

With no Pikmin 3 in the European launch window, a bunch of games I could play on other systems, that crap about no Virtual Console playable on the gamepad screen (which I hope was a PR mistake) and hopefully a price drop to compete with next years new consoles. There's just not enough incentive for me to pick one up.

I'm disappointed. After E3 2011 I was really looking forward to Wii U. But this years E3, the price and the lack of exclusives that I actually feel excited to play (only Pikmin 3!) my enthusiasm has run out.

I'm sure I'll want one when the next Zelda or 3D Mario rolls around. Heck I'd want one now if it had a new Starfox or F Zero, regardless of the price. But till them I'll stick with my 3DS.

ICO SUX!

Don't get me wrong folks, I have no idea about how well the remote play holds up. I just really hate that game.

Thanks! Not read/seen enough of Starship Defense. I knew it was Q games but my enjoyment of tower defense pretty much starts and stops at Plants vs Zombies so I was never interested in it before. I will definitely check it out though. The others are indeed games I've been meaning to try.

Nintendo Gaming / The Sun slams the Wii U - Water is wet.

5 reasons not to buy the Wii U in typical poorly worded and badly researched fashion from the Sun. The UK's premier tabloid news paper for stupid stories about video games:
 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/fun/gaming/article4542882.ece

The general gist is that it's not as good as a PS3 and a Vita (which I have, and the comparison is lost on me) and people should hold off until the price cut.

Should earn them a few clicks, just posted here for you to enjoy the idiocy.

Everybody loves diversity, right? How about a Gameboy puzzle retroactive? What could be more different to the recent crop of RetroActive's than that?
It could be a challenge to discuss this type of game as they tend not to have a plot/dialogue. But why not go all the way, do a totally different retrospective where we play as many of the games as we can and discuss which is the best & why.  And there could be room to talk about when and where you remember playing some of them back in the day. If we stick to what's out on the virtual console it'll be easy to get hold of the games, relatively cheap (3 wouldn't break the bank) and there are already a diverse selection of puzzles on the eshop.
Check out the list:

Tetris (is it really the best puzzle game on the GB/all time?), Kirby Star Stacker, Quix, Catrap, Dr Mario (room for more misty eyed reminiscence), Lock N Chase and Mario's Picross.

Whilst I am delighted that proper Vita remote play is finally here (as apposed to PSP mode remote play) I couldn't care less about the games. HD remakes of PS2 games? Surely the Vita has enough grunt to handle that sort of thing as a stand alone game?

Admittedly my utter hatred for the God of War franchise and dislike for Ico means I was never going to get excited about this announcement. I might give SofC another try at some point.

What I really want to see is current gen PS3 games. Whatever happened to that remote play Killzone 3 demo from last year?  I really hope WiiU remote play isn't as disappointing.

Nice one! Incipiently, do you recommend any of the DSiware you have? I've got 3D Space Tank (X returns) and 4 Swords but that's it.
