I wasnt sure it would be possible, but it totally looks like Switch will easily outsell DS. Its crazy how popular it has been.

Switch 2 will have a challenging time following up such success.

Great to hear Gimmick music at the end of this episode. I think it is the best music that was ever made for NES/Famicom.
I have the soundtrack CD that Iam8bit released a few years ago.

I also have the physical copy of the re release on Switch. Its cool to have because famicom cartridges of the game are extremely expensive. The only issue is, I think the game is not actually very good, partly because of its difficulty.

I regret nothing.

Well so much for my Mario Kart 9 prediction
At least I managed to snag that one in the Fantasy Critic game. Here are my purrdictions for 2025:

  • New 3D Mario releases for Switch 2
  • New game from Next Level Games releases for Switch 2
  • Capcom announces a Monster Hunter game for Switch 2
  • Nintendo announces Splatoon 4 for Switch 2
  • Square Enix announces an HD2D remake of Chrono Trigger
  • Yoshi’s Wooly World re-release
  • Kirby Planet Robobot re-release
  • Re-release of an older Zelda game
  • Switch finally gets a line of reduced priced games (like “Nintendo Selects” but may have different name)
  • Mysterious C button related to the audio functions of Switch 2

Keep the hype for Switch 2 going!

>It feels like the pace of figure releases has slowed dramatically.

It's complicated.

The average over the past five years is about ten figures per year (with the highest in that time being four years ago with 20 and the lowest being five years ago with four).  We had nine figures released in 2024.

But, what we also had was a *lot* of reprints of figures people had been wanting to see reprinted.  There were *tons* of restocks/reprints in 2024.

I don't *know* the business side of things, but my gut instinct is that including the NFC reader is cheap (although Nintendo does love to pinch pennies) and leaving it in A.) keeps Switch 1 compatibility, B.) provides the *option* for new amiibo (/wrist bands), and C.) would allow them to experiment with other ideas (tap to pay on eShop?).

Could be wrong.  But I'd keep it in there.

One question I have is about amiibo support. Do folks think there will be an NFC reader on the device?

This IGN article notes the logo is absent from the right Joy-Con, but that doesn't necessarily indicate its absence.

Personally I don't see them dropping NFC yet, since they're also using the amiibo technology in their themeparks, and I have to imagine they'll eventually want to create ~bRaNd SynErgY~ between their gaming operations and theme parks.
But to be honest I don't know if amiibo themselves are still a notable driver of revenue for them. It feels like the pace of figure releases has slowed dramatically.

My main focus on the Switch has been RPGs.  Typically the new games that grab my interest would get a Switch version but last year I started noticing the Switch getting left out, likely because the hardware was getting old and the Switch 2 was upcoming.  I first noticed it with Persona 3 Reload and then later with Visions of Mana and Metaphor: ReFantazio.  It just feels like those games would be typical Switch games.  So I would like to see them on the Switch 2 and based on the support Square Enix and Atlus have provided the Switch 1, I expect them to show up.

Other than that, I would like to see series that are almost fully represented on the Switch get filled up on the Switch 2, so that a Switch 2 owner could conceivably get into a franchise and have the entire series available to them across the two platforms.  Outside of videogames that's typically how it works.  Music converted from records to CDs and the major artists had their entire discography converted.  Movies made the switch from VHS to DVD and the entire series was converted, not just like the first and fourth movies or something like that.  So Symphony of the Night totally fits in there.  I would like the entire Trails series as well since its reputation is that you need to play all the games in order but you can't on the Switch.  There are rights issues with Cold Steel I and II that may prevent that unfortunately but it doesn't make much sense to just plop games from the middle of the series on a system if playing the earlier games is essentially required, particularly since the series wasn't originally on Nintendo systems.
