This is basically the exact opposite of Mario Sunshine, lol.

I really like what they showed here.  I'm glad Nintendo finally has a fun looking shooter designed for online play in its lineup.  I know the look isn't macho-space marine, but that was getting boring and old-hat anyway.  I'm thinking I'm really gonna enjoy this one.  Looks like there's a lot of strategy involved, which is great.  Too many shooters are ducking and reflexes.

Ian, if you think paintball is just for kids, watch Community they make paintball look pretty friggin intense. Also I think there was a Friday the 13th that had a gorey paintball scene in it too. This games looks fucking awesome Nintendo I am starting to get more interested in your machine.

I've had enough people show me their paintball welts to know it can get intense.  But paintball is a simulation of shooting guns.  The idea is that you can't actually shoot each other so you use paintball instead.  A paintball videogame is like having a LARP videogame instead of Zelda.  It's a simulation of a simulation.  Since a videogame is already a simulation why not have it look like real guns and real violence?  If you had access to the holodeck would you play virtual paintbawl or simulate an actual gun fight?

The reason to go with paintball is entirely to make the game non-violent and appropriate for kids.  Well I'm not a kid so I'm not interested.  Hell I wouldn't be if I was a kid because when you're a kid you don't like being treated as a kid.  The kids that want to play a game where they shoot each other online want to play Call of Duty or Halo or Gears of War.  Nintendo probably thinks that going with this design is making an "everybody" game but that's nonsense.  The graphic style actually seems very non-Nintendo like in that it seems more kid-oriented - like how other companies try to match Mario but end up making a game that only appeals to kids because they don't understand Mario's universal appeal.  The main characters in this game are children.  "Everybody" games don't typically do that.

And this is an online game.  You want to be the 30 year old man playing the paintball game with 10 year olds?  Their parents are going to think you're a creep.

People of all ages are right now playing Mario Kart 8 online without any problems. This game will probably have the normal amount of online interaction a Call of Duty game has(maybe less slurs because Nintendo), a game in which 30 year old men play with 10 years old constantly.

Digging the hell out ta this game. I also fall under the category of not being able to play FPS due to motion sickness, so this plays right to my likes. Really looks like awesome fun.  I wouldn't worry about being the only grownup playing online either. Mario Kart 8 is full of us in there.

I enjoy things that are fun, and this game looks like it could be a lot of fun.

and if I have to play it against a bunch of 10yr olds to get the most out of it, then so be it. That would likely be no different than most of those other games that are played online anyways.

This looks like the perfect type of game to pull out at a party/small gathering and set a strategy and talk **** and turn into a drinking game because you don't have to take it all that serious like a CoD game.

One of the games of the show for me so far. Looks incredibly creative and atypical of the genre. It's a third-person shooter with a Nintendo twist, and that's absolutely awesome.

I'm sure it's been said everywhere, but I really hope that this is Nintendo's first dual GamePad game for some local 2 on 2 (+ 2 CPU players each for 4v4) battle royal.

I imagine that will be a crazy split screen experience though.

No, a racing game is a simulation of racing in a car.  That's not a simulation of a simulation.

All I'm saying is that to me this game's style seems too oriented towards kids to the point where I would not find it interesting.  The setting and characters do have some impact on my enjoyment as it does for everyone or else every game would just have generic stick figures.  For me the idea of shooting paint instead of bullets is lame.  I can play Mario games and all sorts of other "all ages" games but there is a certain level where the kiddy trappings are too much for me and paintball with kid protaganists crosses that line.  Mario paintball sounded like the lamest most patronizing treat-me-like-a-kid-cause-I-can't-handle-a-big-boy-shooter idea and this is pretty much the same thing.

In this case the spraying of the Ink is integral to the objective of the game.  In theory you could win without hitting your opponent.  We all know that won't happen but there is nothing in the game system stopping that outcome.

This is a game of Own the Map, beat your opponents back and capture the flag.
There is stealth, strategy, technique, execution, weapons, and style in this game.

Would it be more interesting to you if you were painting the territory with the blood of your opponents, and they looked like urban commando's in a dark futuristic setting, but otherwise the game more or less played the same?

Looks interesting to me, I'm more interested in this than basically any other shooting game released in the past 10 years.  Nintendo gets it, at least in this case in my opinion, if they had announced that they were developing a Call of Duty/Halo type game, no one would really care.  There's already plenty of those out there that are great for the people into that kind of thing.  This is different and appeals more to the average Nintendo fan I'd imagine.  I'm all for something unique instead of more of the same.

This game is classic Nintendo. Low barrier for entry, high bar to master. And 4 on 4 multiplayer is perfect. Who the **** cares about the bright colors (team fortress), the gameplay is smooth and action is intense. This should be the system seller if Nintendo can keep their eyes on the ball.

I just got back from E3, and my friend and I played this game three times. I gotta say, I was caught off guard by the game's announcement, and I was immediately interested in playing it. The game definitely doesn't disappoint. It's easy to pick up, fast-paced, and very aggressive in it's gameplay.


The only thing that I struggled with slightly was using the gyroscope to aim (though you can also look around and sort of aim that way with the right stick). That said, by the second run through, I had the hang of it, and it just came down to knowing the level layout and how to get around the opposing team (or ambush them... muhahaha).


I'm definitely picking this one up when it comes out.

I'm sure there would be a somewhat equal balance of both reactions. I did actually think of bloopers when the Inklings transformed. I wouldn't even be surprised if what you described was the original theme, lol.

Personally, I'm glad it's a not a Mario game, since I think it'll be strong enough to hold it's own.

Thing is, it would've been really easy to have made this as Mario Paint Party or whatever. But they didn't, and it's on the WiiU, which will be lucky to do Gamecube numbers. And this game could've been canceled or reappropriated. I love how Nintendo is going down with the ship.

Even if it isn't Mario Paintball, there should totally be an Isle Delfino stage(s) with Mario+Fludd randomly coming in to undoing the inking, Bloopers spraying black ink hazards, Shadow Marios painting random colors, etc to give the stages more dynamic life. And speaking of cameos, I'd kill for a Jet Set Radio stage. Maybe for Splatoon 2: The Respurting...
