Episode 396: Always Be Leaking
« on: August 31, 2014, 10:11:14 AM »

We're back to prune backlogs and examine a rare set of leaks from Nintendo.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/38397/episode-396-always-be-leaking

Other than intercontinental pro football discussion, most of us spent the week off playing lots of games and, generally speaking, we all made some progress on our backlogs. Gui starts off with Shadow of the Ninja from the NES days, plus an interesting indie game called The Fall that just dropped on Wii U's eShop. Jonny has a whole grab-bag and spends a least a few minutes each on Gone Home, Wario Land 3, Rogue Legacy, SpecOps: The Line, and even the notorious "PT" demo. Lindy takes us into an opposite direction with Madden 15 (you know, the fifteenth Madden game...) and even a bit of Demon's Souls. James wraps up the New Business with his long-awaited impressions for Persona 4, and we beg the question of whether it is weird. Answer: YES.

The final segment begins with a feature discussion about Mario Kart 8's DLC plan and what it may say for other Nintendo games, especially the new Smash Bros. Then we have time for a single but rather deep email topic: leaks. We've seen a few of them lately, whereas Nintendo has historically been very tight. Why is this happening now, and could it affect Nintendo's strategy? You'll have to listen to find out what we think! We have some great emails that got bumped to next time, and you can add to the fun by sending in your own question or topic for the RFN crew.

I would not say that Mario never gets paid for saving various kingdoms.  They always leave coins floating all over the dang places.

Wait; there's a N64 Road Rash game?!?

See, being one of the privileged elite that selected Demolition Man back in the day, I actually had the 3DO version of Road Rash, which is probably the best port of that game. the entire soundtrack was done by Sound Garden, and it's got some of the best FMV cutscenes ever where you'd always have something hilarious happen to your drivers if you crashed out, lost a race, or got caught by a cop. It also was just interesting seeing this 3D bitmapped and textured game with the digitized sprites. VERY awesome game that came in a giant ass box like every other 3DO game.

At any rate, great episode. I still need to properly play Persona 3, but I feel like I need to play that game with a FAQ open at all times, less I miss my opportunity to build a social link or incorrectly choose when I do or don't go into the tower. I've actually been wanting to play it and Persona 4 after playing a lot of Persona 4 Arena with my friend, who bitches that I play that game SUUUUUUUUPER lame.

I really don't have much to say other than this episode being really quite solid...!

Nintendo just need ONE more patch and ONE more DLC to make MK8 perfect

Patch: Expanded voice chat that can be used during race. Friends can remain in parties and move across online lobbies together. Patch the patch; it's a dumb decision that the only way to display the on-screen map is pressing "-" on the gamepad, there is no way to control that from a wii-remote/classic controller. Ability to switch characters/vehicles after online races without disconnecting from the lobby.

DLC: Decent Battle mode maps: 8 maps. If they want to save some effort they can just go back to the old games and remake some of the old maps or base their new maps on the old maps that worked!

I ask this seriously: if Nintendo released a battle mode level pack that had a bunch of levels in it for say, a dollar a track. And lets say they actually work well for the mode.

Would you feel ripped off that they weren't in the game to begin with?

Due to the Wii U crisis, I think a proper battle mode was sacrificed in order to get the game to ship as soon as possible. If they went back and worked it to make it more like previous versions of battle mode I would be ok with it seeing as how people have overwhelmingly crapped on it in MK8 and have asked to have the old mode back. So at least it's an admission of guilt and a chance to make amends now.

Depends of much you paid for the game.

I paid full price and got a free game. So far I enjoyed Mario Kart, both online and single player and the free game.

So to me, the game already paid itself, so no, I don't consider this a rip-off. Mind that I never played battle mode that much, I didn't have that much competition from my bros and friends back in the days of snes and N64. After that I never owned a Mario Kart, so I have yet to experience a proper battle mode online. I agree that the current one sucks and it's plainly boring.

Now, the game is not perfect. I consider way more important a proper online voice chat and the ability to form parties. Then and only then I would prioritize battle modes. I would happily pay for battle mode DLC if they show some good maps and similar pricing as the announced DLC.

Yes, but it would still be better than them not existing.

Mop it up captures my thoughts pretty perfectly. It'd feel like a ripoff on some level, but I'd still much rather feel ripped off a bit than to not have those levels.
