NFC payments via contactless smart cards are coming to the New Nintendo 3DS and LL models in Japan on December 9. The smart cards, which were introduced as a payment option on Wii U over the summer, are commonly used in Japan to scan for train fare or for purchasing items at convenience stores and vending machines. To use the card, users will simply have to place the them near the NFC reader on the bottom touch screen of New Nintendo 3DS units.

Supported cards include Suica, PASMO, Kitaca, TOICA, manaca, ICOCA, SUGOCA, nimoca and Hayakaken. Although NFC payments are gaining some traction worldwide, this is currently limited to the Japanese versions of the New 3DS.

Yeah, if we physically have a prepaid card in our hand that we've put a specific amount of money on so we can buy things, we don't have to type in all the numbers on the card on the 3DS, making it work exactly like every other card-based Point-Of-Sale system since 1971.

Terrifying.

What's to stop someone on the train from rubbing their New 3DS up against my butt where my wallet is and stealing my money? They could even do it surreptitiously by keeping their system in their front pocket and rubbing up against me from behind, thrusting their pelvis into my hindquarters and draining my card. When I visited Tokyo, I can't tell you how often I saw this behavior and on my next trip there I will be looking into lining my wallet with lead plating in the vain hope of stopping such rear-mounting shenanigans.

They're not interested in stealing your money. They just want to touch your butt.

I'll have words with Danny. All I can do for now is apologise on his behalf.
