Episode 450: Tone Down Your Exorcising
« on: October 25, 2015, 09:59:28 AM »

It's fine to be enthusiastic about your work, but stop shooting the walls.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41363/episode-450-tone-down-your-exorcising

The prophesy has been realized, at the Four-Hundred Fiftieth Transit of the Podcast Moon against the face of the Release Planet a fifth shall descend upon them.

Dr. Metts joins James, Jon, Greg, and Guillaume to celebrate Episode 450. As celebration, James planned a totally conventional episode, featuring New Business and a conversation about the latest NX rumors!

As a guest, Jonny leads of with a review of what he's been doing with his newly-found free time. He's just started Yoshi's Woolly World, but he teams up with Gui and Greg to school James and Jon on getting fluffy. His thoughts on Rock Band 4 trigger a conversation of the broader ecosystem of plastic instruments. Guillaume has impressions of Indie ghost-killing, time replaying, game Extreme Exorcism. It turns out anything worth doing is worth doing EXTREME. Jon returns to PS2-classic Shadow of the Colossus. The crew uses this opportunity to shamble up the topic of focused game design and what makes these games work in their own way. Greg is also engaged in an exorcism, with the GBA Virtual Console kart racer Konami Krazy Racers. Remember when Konami wasn't above using their fantastic back-catalog, in unconventional ways, in order to make a buck? Don't answer that. Lastly, James provides an update on The Legend of Legacy. This update mostly comes in the form of a verbal GameFAQ; prep your tank character.

After a creepy Now Playing, the fivesome dissects the latest NX news, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Development kits are out, new chips are in, and a normally verbose podcast finds a new level of verbosity and naval gazing.

After a two week break, we're returning to Listener Mail next week. It's been a while, so fire up your email and send us your comments or questions. We're especially interested in your thoughts about our NX conversation and the future of the Nintendo ecosystem.

Lastly, we're refreshing the logo we use to promote Radio Free Nintendo. Send your submissions to our mailbag. Note, all submissions must be scalable to at least 1400x1400 pixels. We've already got a number of cool ideas; you guys are awesome.

There should be an anniversary every even numbered episode, that way listeners won't ever become complacent in podcast appreciation.

Konami Krazy Karting!
Wai wai wai wai wai wai racing, wai wai wai wai wai wai racing, wai wai wai wai wai wai racing, wai wai wai wai wai wai racing louda!

Like every other English speaker I though The Legend of Legacy was an awful name, but hearing James describe as an old school RPG where you work to piece together remnants of a long dead civilization, where the focus is on charting history rather than creating it, I have done a 180 on the title and think it's actually pretty apt. I look forward to it's European release and am glad ATLUS US has finally settled down and elected NIS America as ATLUS EU.

To me a dev kit is a glimmer of hope that pierces the heart of darkness that is the weekly digital download press release. #mydevkit

I'm not sure what I want for NX although I'm certain it's coming out next year. I feel like some of the duel form factor ideas are flawed and Nintendo's going to have to try really hard to balance it although the prospect it's self excites me. Say the system is really powerful to keep up with 3rd parties, then you invalidate the handheld since you won't be able to put comparable hardware in something portable and there won't be interplay between both the handheld and the console, you are just getting handheld games that can also be played on a tv which is basically the gameboy player/vita tv and isn't the "whole new concept" thing they are aiming for. If you have the handheld and the console on the same level of power you lose western 3rd party support and it'll be every other Nintendo system over again. If the units are sold separately Nintendo is competing with themselves and has to convince it's audience to buy two things that are very similar and play similar games. If the units are in a package like the Wii U gamepad and the Wii U console you get a 100% attach rate so you can design games around this idea, but then the console is gonna be either hella expensive potentially force people to buy something they don't even want, or you are going to have to cheap out on components and have an underpowered gimmicky system.

Ah, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The Metal Gear Solid game that very few people played and has a massive influence on what Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain is. I've been playing Peace Walker HD, and looking at The Phantom Pain makes it apparent that MGSV is basically Super Peace Walker World. Peace Walker HD really is Metal Gear Solid in bite-sized, Monster-Hunter-esque chunks with nearly all missions being completed in 5-10 minutes, longer for boss fights. Also, all the boss fights in the first 4 chapters of the game are easily managed by equipping all the recovery items you can carry, a machine gun, a rocket launcher, and a support marker to resupply.

Peace Walker HD is really fun and can be really grindy.

As for the Nintendo NX, I have the expectation that Nintendo will pocket the savings from the ease of developing a game for both the handheld system and home system for themselves. As much as I would like it, I don't see them offering cross buy or significant discounts.

This brings up the question of why anyone would buy the more expensive NX home system or both (or more) NX systems. My assumption is that Nintendo has things set up in a way they will be fine if a person only buys one system or only buys the cheaper handheld NX system.

but there IS an option for unlimited eggs! It's called tapping your Yoshi amiibo to the gamepad to summon a parner. because you can eat them and turn them into eggs, they are effectively not only the double cherry power-up, but also unlimited eggs for the purpose of finding stuff!

Mentioning that The Sagend of Gagacy[TM] has a quick save is a shocking turn of events that ALMOST makes me want to take up the pain and tedium of the layered RNG that these games have offered through the years. I still love Unlimited SaGa where they literally make you play a slot machine to choose commands in battle or have RNG funtimes for every time you move your piece on the stupid game board in that game that they implimented to replace actually moving on any sort of overworld.

I'm certainly glad they put your item aquisition on an RNG with the boats, though.

and I'm glad that there's such a giant **** you as to eject you from the map for making the cardinal sin of running from a battle. At least unlike FF2 they don't just make it impossible to run from battle because your AGI didn't decide it felt like going up in early parts of the game when you were actually able to dodge attacks.

I'm sad to see that guillaume wasn't satisfied by Zip Lash. I played it start to finish and liked it. Not a game if replay any time soon or go for that 100% but it's an amusing platformer. Yoshi on the other hand is well worth going for the 100%

I'm with James on the whole NX as 2 devices. I think it would be a mistake to totally consolidate the handheld and home console into 1 hybrid device that plays games both ways. A big part of what makes Nintendo special are those handheld specific experiences. It would be really sad to see those kinds of games go away for w portable console

If the NX is based on Wii U tech, the home console version may have a a DVD drive to allow it to play all your games, with either your old PAD, or, a new Wii U PAD (presumably a revised/upgraded one).
Or do you think it will be digital only, saving the cost of the DVD drive?

Either way, the NX is basically going to launch with the Wii U library ready to go, I assume, and for a LOT of people, those will feel like new games, having missed Wii U.

Also, games like Splatoon and Smash will be ready to play day one, which is pretty useful, as those games have very long legs.

I'm still hoping for a DVD drive, or DVD attachment though, as I am mostly physical for my Wii U and I would love to just do a day 1 transfer to the NX, chuck the Wii U in a drawer, and carry on like nothing ever happened.

A Link Between Worlds was amazing. This is a classic case of going against the grain. Lol.
Though is still not close to Zelda perfection Link’s Awakening.

Who's this Dr Metz guy? Do us all a favor: keep it to the podcast regulars instead of bringing in people who don't have any experience talking about Nintendo.

Still working through the podcast, but found the Yoshi discussion interesting because I've just recently started the SNES (well, I'm actually playng on GBA) game. Some of the complaints sounded very familiar - enough so that I'm rethinking whether to pick the Wii U title up.

One thing I'm not sure about from the discussion: does the Wii U Yoshi game still as many moments of screwage, where the level design drops some unexpected and (because you didn't know about it) nearly unavoidable obstacle in your way? Sometimes this leads to death, sometimes it just prevents you from getting a high rating on the level... but either way it feels like a cheap way to increase replay value.

I think the strategic goal with the NX is to no longer split development between a handheld and a console. That split was Nintendo's biggest weakness, practically halving their game output for owners of one system. I think for that reason they want to avoid making home-only or portable-only games because that would be splitting their dev resources again. Streaming or making two versions of a game for different use cases does not seem realistic to me, the former fails due to the lack of coverage when on the go (also doesn't WiFi eat crazy amounts of power?) and the latter massively increases the dev workload for the game, again reducing their game output by targeting two platforms.

All we can really do is wait and see but I really expect them to limit their system power to what's doable portably. Cellphone processors aren't bad these days but they're handicapped by their lacking controls and everything-must-be-free market mentality.

Agreed.  Haven't quite finished it yet, but I'm still enjoying it despite its flaws.

One thing that wasn't mentioned about the "snacks" you can find throughout the game is how fun they are to view in 3D. Every snack you find is stored in your album that you can view anytime like the trophies in Smash.  You can spin them around and even unwrap them to see the food inside (and they look super realistic).

Gui is kind of a connoisseur of 2D Platformers. I don't always agree with him, but he's very well-informed. I'd say the challenge with Zip Lash is there is such a density of 2D platformers available on Nintendo systems that when a veteran team of Nintendo devs put out something that isn't really transcendent it seems like its a totally wasted effort. Woolly World came out so soon after the fact it really needed to stand up to that game to stay out of its shadow. NOE and NCL at least avoided that problem, but I doubt that will really buy the game much mindshare.

What do you guys think of Halo 5?
Not a big Halo guy. I watched GiantBomb play the multi beta on Friday. Technically looked nice, wasn't in love with the neon past-vision-of-the-future thing. Haven't watched enough video of single player to have an opinion.

Either way, the NX is basically going to launch with the Wii U library ready to go, I assume, and for a LOT of people, those will feel like new games, having missed Wii U.
Hell or high water, Wii U games will be there, even if they have to be properly ported. What I don't know is if it makes sense to dump them all at once. You run the risk of sucking the air out of their lungs by giving new NX, non-Wii U owners, too many games to pick from. I'd say have a strong line-up of NEW titles for launch (at least 4 with 1 big one) and then trickle out the Wii U ports over a year or so to fill in the release calendar.

Regarding Yoshi's Wooly World - how does the music compare to Kirby's Epic Yarn?
I listened to some of the music on YouTube (I haven't got the game yet) when we were planning the end music for this week. It seems really good. Good Feel music always seems to be really good.

That actually came up in the interview we did with Tanabe and Tabata (6/28 update). Not sure if they said that explicitly but I seem to remember it. They talked a bit about the candy.

A Link Between Worlds was amazing. This is a classic case of going against the grain. Lol.
Though is still not close to Zelda perfection Link’s Awakening.
I'll agree with you on Link's Awakening. I adore that game. I think it had the right tone of silliness and seriousness. I loved all the Easter Eggs you had when Marin is following you or when you have the Chain Chomp etc. I've always been down on Link Between Worlds. I just never found the puzzles engaging, there were too many break the pot, oh look a button, puzzles for my taste. I didn't particularly care for the art style or the wall traversal gimmick either. Believe me, I wanted to like that game, it just didn't do it for me.

Thanks for the link, listened to the first tracks & turned off so I wouldn't spoil any more music. Kirby's Epic Yarn leaned heavily on the piano, sounds like Yoshi's will do the same with an acoustic guitar.  Sounds good from what I heard.
