It's 2012, not 2014- the Mayans' calender (which was MUCH more accurate than ours is) stops on December 23rd, 2012, which marks the end of our epoch and the beginning of the next. I believe we're supposed to die by earthquake or fire, not sure.

About asteroids- I've read up a lot on asteroids and near Earth collisions, and you would not believe how many times we've come extremely close to complete and utter obliteration. Most of the time we don't even realize we were barely missed until after it happened.

Yes there are too many of these to take seriously. It will more than likely be another near miss.

They're saying there's about a one in a MILLION chance of an impact, and that's in 2014.
But it's not definite, because its in 2014, and they will get more data about it.

I thought it was 2010?  Or is that when the scum of Cali drown in their filth....i mean ...when California sinks?

Homer: Don't worry, I've built us a bomb shelter. *Points to cardboard box in backyard with USA #1 written on it, and an umbrella sticking out*
Lisa: THAT isn't going to protect us from anything!
Homer: Fine, don't use it then.
Lisa: I won't.
Homer: Fine.

Welp, it's 1 in a 90,000 chance it'll hit Earth. Better start lootin'!

By 2014 I'll be in my thirties and likely married with a bunch of bratty kids and bills to pay.  I figure I'll want to be killed by an asteroid by then anyways so it's all fine.

I thought I was the only one who believed that the world was going to end in 2012.  No body at school believes me.  In fact, they kind of look at me funny and slowly back away....strange....

How much is it now, KnowsNothing? At my school the vending machines run a dollar for bottled stuff and 60 cents for canned.

Asteroid hmmm?
I find it so funny in the films when they can only see the thing coming in like a year (Deep Impact), or less than a bloody month (Armageddon).
I think the most pointless of all end-of-the-world related news was when they reported that there's the possibility that an asteroid WILL destroy Earth......

In just less than a million year's time.

Termin8, are you being sarcastic about the people in the movies only knowing a year or a month in advance of an Earth killing asteroid? Like I said before, most of the time we didn't even realize we were almost hit by an Earth killer until after the fact. It's very likely that if we are ever hit by a gigantic asteroid, it will be with absolutely no prior notice.

Except for the giant flaming ball of doom.  The way I figure, from when we first see the rock thing, to when it hits, there will be enough time to get in Homer's shelter.

What would we do if an asteroid was about to hit?  Just sit there and die?  Sound like a plan!

There's very little to do. I mean, how do you stop a 10 kilometer hunk of rock on a collision course for Earth? If they recognized it early enough, they might be able to send out a nuclear charge. It wouldn't blow up the rock at all, like was portrayed in Armageddon, but it would alter it's course just enough that the asteroid would miss Earth. Other than that, though, we're pretty much helpless. Almost any form of defense requires prior notice, and like I've said, that's something you rarely get with killer asteroids.
