Title: 2010 World Cup - South Africa
Post by: Stogi on January 18, 2009, 10:53:28 AM
18 months from now, the World Cup will finally be played on African soil. It is a huge moment in South Africa's history, as well as a prestigious moment for all Africans and African nations. 6 African nations will qualify this year, meaning there is a good chance one might make a very big splash and may even get to the quarter or semifinals. That would be fantastic.

If you have never been to South Africa, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth; with mountains that glide into beaches, forests filled with exotic birds and birds of prey, and plains brimming with zebra, baboons, lions, rhinos, elephants and cheetahs. There is nothing like it. I suggest to anyone that is a fan of football and a fan of traveling to seriously consider going; even if it's a short stay.

I, along with my brother and some friends, will be heading back to Cape Town to watch the entire World Cup play out. I hope to buy a ticket to the QF or SF games since both will be in Cape Town. I really hope I can, but it wouldn't be too disappointing if I couldn't.

I'm going to continually update this thread with news of the Cup; maybe some pictures of the newly built stadiums and what not. So enjoy.

Brazil's next in the line with 2014! I don't know how, but I am definitely going to that as well.

I look at this picture and frown. Red countries are already eliminated from qualification (because they lost but it's still upsetting) How can cool countries like Vanuatu and Senegal be out already when clowns who will no doubt underperform (cough, European qualifiers 6 through to 13) will clog up the tournament?

Friggen New Zealand winning OFC qualification. I'll NEVAR FORGET the Oceania Cup of 2004, when 300 or so individuals wandered into Adelaide's stadium to see Vanautu TROUNCE New Zealand 4-2, ensuring that the Solomon Islands played Australia in the final. I'm reading up on the, no doubt highly anticipated, rematch at the 08 Oceania Cup where Vanuatu HOSTED New Zealand to a crowd of 8000 (i've been to Korman Stadium, there's like a thousand seats maximun.) The locals would've been pretty exited to hit the lead in the first half, possibly so excited that they stopped concentrating and New Zealand scored twcie to miss humiliation again.

I'm not sure who to bandwagon seeing as my home country hasn't made the final tournament since I was 2.

I'll be rooting for Honduras since I have family that works/lives there, but after they go out in the group stage...

Stogi you able to post any old pics?  I attended the world cup co-hosted by Korea/Japan, tut tut we can't seem to get along.  even though it was a ridiculous move it was still fun as hell, I'll try and find my old memory card and post some pics.

You can join my bandwagon and root for every African team. An African nation hasn't won it.....ever. They are the ultimate underdogs.

I'm not sure what you mean, Sessha. I haven't been to a world cup before. If you have, then by all means, post those pics!

BTW...I loved that world cup so so very much. It was phenomenal how well South Korea did.

Well you can bend the rules a bit and say that Brazil is an African team.

I'm rooting for Portugal of course.

I think South Africa deserved to win that match against Mexico. It was an average game, but Tshabalala's goal was spectacular.

What a pile of misery it was to watch France and Uruguay.

I've been getting into soccer video games because of the World Cup. I mentioned X2 Soccer 2010 in the iPhone thread, but I've also been playing a lot of Pro Evo on the Wii. I had forgotten how fantastic those controls are.

Fucken hell. So I was in the student village rec room. Woulda been a hundred or so people there. I'd say the crowd was split 96% South African supporters and 3% Mexicunts.

I hate Mexico for putting an end to our celebrations. Were were having the best time.

Note: the 1% is for that idiot who doens't get sports nd sits around with a glass of sherry and a monocle and quietly analyses the game while backing up every call the ref makes. Way to do it wrong. Sport is about being COMPLETELY ONE EYED WITH UNDYING DEVOTION TO YOUR TEAM even if you only adopted them 5 minutes before teh game started because you once met a pretty girl from there.

I'm actually getting into this. Of course, all the fun I have with soccer video games and the built up excitement of the event usually goes away within 5-10 minutes of the first game I watch. I'm giving it another shot, but, at least in my experience so far, soccer is the most ridiculously boring sport to watch.

Maybe my tastes have matured, or maybe some of my brain cells died, but I'm watching the game and really getting into it. I think all the soccer video games I've been playing recently have given me an appreciation for the strategy of the game.

Man, that English goalie has to be feeling awful after letting one like that in.

It was a stupid tackle but it wasn't dangerous. A massive overreaction from the ref for sure. I think our chances of moving on are pretty slim. We can't score, in the warm up games our goals were flukey and I haven't seen a convincing, commanding performance from our team since the 2006 World Cup game against Japan and even that was only for a half. Schwarzer is meant to be one of the best keepers in the world but the second German goal was the result of his hesitation in coming of his line to deal with the cross. Terrible performance, we are horrible to watch. I'm glad I've still got Italy!

Same here. Italy were throwing everything at them in the final minutes. An unfit Santa Cruz probably prevented Paraguay from really going for it towards the end. As a massive Italy supporter it was a huge sigh of relief to get such a fortunate equaliser, but I feel the result was justified.

Portugal does not deserve that one point. They played so bad. Coentrao, and Eduardo were good though. I just wanted to kick that Liedson into outer space because he's so lame on the field. ARRRGH!
Title: Re: 2010 World Cup - South Africa
Post by: Stogi on June 15, 2010, 05:55:45 PM
This world cup has been pretty lackluster in it's professionalism. Keepers are playing like ****, players are passing like ****, strikers are shooting like ****. That said, the favorites are firing on all cylinders; most notably Germany and Brazil. It'll be interesting when everyone has one game under their belt. That little experience will go a long way.

BTW, the atmosphere here is fucking insane. Never have I seen such a collection of cultures. Everyday I'm meeting someone new from some other part of the world. It's truly amazing.

Really? Is it that much of a problem? I can't even hear TV, let alone the crowds (although my favorite bar so far is close to the stadium so I can hear loud "Ahhh"'s and boos every so often). I mean, these bars down here are crazy loud themselves. Hell for the Brazilian game, they're were mad people playing hand drums and woodblocks right next to me.

Well let's just say that you can hear the commentators, but in the background there is this one massive sound buzzing in the background... constantly... for the whole hour and a half. LOL.

But it seems you are having a great time, so the least I can say is: Enjoy!

Yep, on TV there's no rise and fall of crowd noise when there's a break on, or a corner. It's just a continual drone. You can't hear any singing or drums etc which is disappointing. Speaking to mates who went over though they absolutely love the vuvuzelas.

South Africa lost to Uruguay, what a bummer. They could have tied probably, if it weren't for them loosing their goalkeeper. Some referees in this championship are bad, or at least making calls that just makes me go, Huh?

Well, to be honest, in that winning goal, they were ALL grabbing each other. They should have let the goal in just because of that. The defense was fouling the offense (USA) and they were trying their best to make the goal, and they did. You gotta reward that, not just invalid the game winning goal.

I'm really pissed.

I am crushed by Italy's exit. The glimpses of brilliance they showed were fleeting but the impact that Pirlo had was unquestionable. Going forward they would have a been a major threat notwithstanding the fact that a showdown with the Dutch loomed.

In regards to group D I feel that the worst team (Ghana) has made it through. Both Australia (after the Germany game) and Serbia showed a lot more promise.

The Germany - England game is going to be massive. USA have done very well to get top spot, Ghana will be considerably easier.

So a co worker is taking his lunch and watching 'the big game' and I ask him to tell me the score since I'm away from the TV working. He says something like 3-11. I'm all 'What? OMG! Who won, Spain?' and he's all "Yankees". I'm like 'why are you watching baseball during the world cup?'. This is after a conversation earlier when I told him we should have the station set to watch the world cup in the dining room. Right then one of the drivers walks in and she sees us fiddling with the TV and asks if we're watching the world cup and I was laughing 'no because someone tuned it to baseball instead' and she was all 'WTH?!? who watches baseball during the world cup?'

lol

Go Spain! I said I hoped Spain would win to my gf and she got all riled up I wasn't rooting for a 'true latino team' because they are part of Europe. She wants Uruguay to win since Argentina lost.

I got confused because yesterday there were games playing but with teams that were out. It turns out they were reruns.

I'm still interested in the World Cup despite the US being eliminated, but I'm not interested enough to manipulate my sleep schedule in order to be able to watch the games like I was for the US, so I haven't seen many games since then.

So...hung over....

Dutch know how to party that's for sure....butt **** the dutch. They play like ****. No class, no style.

Speakin of which...the Germans are taking this WC hands down...They are lethal with only three players on a counter-attack. You don't think Argentina could've beat Spain or Holland? Then you're stupid. Brazil lost their cool and that's why they lost; it had nothing to do with how Holland played, but more like how they didn't. Flopping like bitches all over the place. Just try with ze germans, dutch. Floppin' won't stop the pace of them young german players. They came to ball.

Spain doesn't stand a chance. I'd be surprised if they scored...seriously...

Seeing Ghana lose made me and the rest of the continent cry. I've never seen such a devastating lost. P.S. When that dude fell on his head and passed out, I and the rest of the bar thought he was dead. That **** has happened (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42klb5HjvBk&feature=related) and it's no joke. Totally humbled the game for second.

Anyway...it's been one hell of a world cup.

F U Spain. Germany has shown the best football in this championship, but Spain has been so lucky, so they're the ones to go to the finals.

There are bigger records by the way, but I think Mop it up was just trying to mock the sport.

Alright, today's game is for the 3rd place, Germany vs Uruguay.

My prediction, 2 - 1 Germany wins.

GO URUGUAY! Even if my prediction goes against Uruguay, I'm still rooting for them ;) This could be a great game.

Congratulations to the Spanish team.

I do have to say that I am not impressed with their football. I still think Germany showed some of the best football in the entirety of the tournament, but since it's a young team they have a few more chances to make it through the end. Let's not forget the Euro Cup of course.

God I hate how the world cup ended. I loved every single day I was there though!

Now I'm back in the States and I'm actually glad to be back for one reason only. It's fuckin hot here! Cape Town didn't have the most comfortable weather.

Anyway, hilarious stories and **** to come...
