Title: Did Justin Nation create the forums?
Post by: ShyGuy on March 07, 2019, 08:07:46 PM
I just watch the 20 year tribute video and Justin talks about building the backend for the website. Did he saddle us with choose SMF? Can he update the forum software now? Should I start pestering him?

I think the forums moved over from opn2000 to planetn2000. If I remember correctly opn2000 was Justin's thing and planetn2000 was Billy's thing and they merged.

The first forum was discus, then it moved to ezboards, now it's whatever it is now.

There was also Dolphin Cove, where Fran Mirabella was. He'd plug his site every time he'd post. Then we implemented a don't plug your site rule. Now look at youtube. Sheesh.

I remember the ezboards. It was written in Smalltalk so it couldn't be moved or upgraded easily.

I think they still managed it. My posts date back to 2003.

Although, eh. 2000-2002 were big years for PGC. I just took a good look back at old posts from 2003. I should have tried harder with spelling and grammar. It's atrocious.

Edit: Yeah, looks like ezboards was the boards we had before 2003. What was the name of the boards we had between 2003 and 2005? I remember it was generic like ezboards. I met a girl one time because we used the same computer lab and used the same integrated forum software and I accidentally posted as her. Maybe that was ezboards in 2002-2003? I was in early college.

If I recall, SMF was chosen because PGC knew the team and got a good (likely free) licence deal.
