For the sake of comparison (using Media Create Sales numbers):

Pokemon X and Y - 1.87 million
Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire - 1.51 million
Pokemon Sun and Moon - 1.89 million

Pretty darn good. I'm also curious to see what the numbers from North America and Europe will look like.

So are those X/Y sales lifetime sales, or also just the launch?

Those are just the launch numbers.

I've read some other internet (read: unsubstantiated) chatter that the sales for FFXV in Japan are disappointing because they doesn't stack up with release week sales numbers other FF games. I dunno if that's true.
Sure seemed to move decent number of PS4 consoles, though.

I'm a bit surprised they're still selling the Xbox One in Japan. Are they really making any money off of it or its games with those kinds of sales?

I am curious, did Microsoft ever have a big presence in Japan with their Windows? Maybe they are just keeping Xbox going to try and preserve any mind-share they might have clinging to those Windows customers?

The last Final Fantasy game to sell like XV did in its opening week in Japan? Final Fantasy V.

Which btw, came out in 1992.

A combination of a moribund console market in Japan and (probably) fan resentment following certain other releases = less than impressive sales.

Just something interesting to note about Pokemon Sun and Moon and its closest competition this month, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.

We know Pokemon is at ~3.6m in the Americas after 12 days. The NPD period ended on the 26th, so 9 days of Pokemon sale. If we assume most of the sales are frontloaded, let's say 75% of those 3.6 were tracked by NPD (physical, US) which means 2.7m.

CNBC is reporting that Infinite Warfare was down over half from last year (BO3). That was about 4.8m. Other analysts with access to the data are saying you have to quadruple it to get to Modern Warfare 3 (the best seller in the series) and that was just shy of 9m. So we're looking at 2.3 - 2.4m for Infinite Warfare.

On a unit basis, there's a better than average chance that Nintendo had the best selling game of November in the US. The NPD chart we're getting next week, however, tracks things differently - they base it on revenue. And since Infinite Warfare was $60 at launch, with a $80 edition that a lot of people bought for the Modern Warfare remaster, and Activision's digital sales on PSN/XBL count toward the revenue, it'll probably be IW 1, Pokemon 2.

Seems like Super Mario Maker for 3DS is doing very well, even with the missing features.

The features that it does have (local sharing) is far easier to use there, though.

Plus a Mario Run bounce.

NPD top 10, in which I didn't consider they'd split Pokemon:

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Battlefield 1
Pokemon: Sun
Pokemon: Moon
Titanfall 2
NBA 2K17
Madden NFL 17
Watch Dogs 2
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
FIFA 17

PS4 best selling hardware. 3DS up 59% over November 2015 and best month of software sales ever. NES Classic 196k.

Their stock is down ~4% because of Mario Run?

http://news.sky.com/story/nintendo-shares-fall-as-investors-give-thumbs-down-to-super-mario-app-10697714

Quote
Early signs for the Mario game were positive as it topped download rankings in Britain, Japan, Germany and Australia.

But some analysts are concerned about the $9.99 price tag - £7.99 in the UK - to access the full version of the game and that Android users will not be able to buy it until later.

Did the stockholders want a lower price so they'd make... less money?

Were they caught off guard until today about the app's price?

Because it's a one-time purchase instead of soaking up all of the money. They don't understand that it's part of the marketing budget.

Most of the games that I play on mobile are not free-to-play and they are all a better value for the content.  If it wasn't Mario, there would be zero chance of me buying a game like this for the price.  But, it's Mario, and I understand that Nintendo wants to set as high a precedent for price as possible.  Iwata was concerned about undervaluing games in the mobile space and hurting the market.

This would explain my previous consternation about the sudden stock drop:

Super Mario Run Earnings Projections Downgraded

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/super-mario-run-earnings-projections-downgraded-si/1100-6446280/

Quote
SuperData updated its projections for Super Mario Run today, saying it now expects the game to bring in between $12 million and $15 million in its first month. That's down significantly from the company previous first-month forecast of $60 million.

Nobody can get a straight answer on the total sales:

Quote
According to data from Apptopia, Super Mario Run saw 2,850,000 downloads in its first day on the App Store, ... Rival firm App Annie puts the download figures much higher, saying Mario saw 3.5 million downloads just in the U.S. within the first 14 hours, and 10 million total downloads worldwide on Dec. 15th, its launch day.

Sensor Tower is reporting that the app has seen more than 5 million worldwide downloads on day one.

Numbers from other outlets are still coming in.*

At first, I was surprised to see that the 3DS was having its best month of software sales this late in its market life. But then I remembered it's because of Sun/Moon. Pretty crazy.

Pokemon GO was the best advertising Pokemon Sun/Moon could have ever had.
