Nintendo Gaming / Re: Forum Snap Poll: How Sold Are You on the Switch?
« on: October 29, 2016, 02:21:06 PM »
For me personally I prefer to buy digital only when there is no physical option, like AVGN adventures, or when the disc is outrageously priced and the digital is a steal in comparison, like Xeno Blade Chronicles or Kirby Return to Dream Land.

But I have tons of Virtual Console games I flat out am not rebuying. If I can't get them transferred to the system in some way for free I am keeping my Wii U around until it dies. By then I likely won't care anymore. But game saves might be an issue. I don't ever buy DLC either, ever. If the game is not complete when I first buy it tough I buy a game when it releases if its not finished I play an incomplete game and base my experience off that.

The only exception is when DLC is free and unlocked in game like Amiibo or something similar, like e-reader. I give it a shop for fun/our of curiosity and then move on. Of course I am not the representative of the gaming community as a whole but I probably fit into the target demo they are trying to reach more than the people who buy everything they make anyways. Even if only slightly so.

Yes, the original Crystal Chronicles struck an impressive balance of doling out roles to each player so that they all played an important part, but I don't think the execution was spot on. Echoes of Time, the second DS game, had the best equipment modification, magic, and race systems of the series. While I truly love the soundtrack for the first game, I also think that The Crystal Bearers for Wii had an incredible soundtrack.

One thing is for sure, however- this series should definitely see a return.

Count me in! Crystal Chronicles is one of only 4 Game Cube games I actually own and I loved the concept very much. I didn't get it on Wii, my brother in law took it upon himself to install my Life as a King on my Wii, a game I never got into, and I was so burned out on Wii and FF side games by that point I kind of forgot how much fun the original was.

I wonder if my paper will let me do a story on this thing? I would love to go to a hands on event. Maybe for the magazine. I could pitch it for the magazine if I can convince my boss the elderly will be interested. Oh it's a Nintendo console no need to convince him.

Not on a Nintendo platform, but have finally slain a personal demon in Final Fantasy VIII (on PlayStation 1) after over a decade of slow progress and I wanna talk about it. ...

But hey, at least it's better than Final Fantasy 7.

Get out. We're done we can't be friends anymore.  :@
Final Fantasy 7 is gaming perfection. You will remember that when the awesome HD remake gets released. That game alone is the only reason I got a PS4.

Neither the PS4 nor the XB1 were successes based on their first year alone, so I don't think Nintendo is going to (or needs to) go completely overboard in year one. They need a very strong first year, much stronger than either the Wii U and 3DS obviously, but not at the expense of years two and three. If they start putting out games at a ridiculous pace, they're going to start cannibalizing sales of their own and (more importantly) third party software at some point too. Any hint of that is not going to sit well with the third parties, especially since many of them believe that their games generally have a hard time selling on Nintendo consoles to begin with (however accurate or inaccurate that may be). There needs to a balance between all the factors that go into the long-term success of a console.

PS4 launched around the holidays, by the end of it's first holiday year it had already sold more than Wii U in its entire life and never looked back. It sure was a success in its first year, it was all news sites reported on for a very long time. It started slowing down once the hype wore off. Xbox One still isn't a success but its beating the pants off Wii U and about to surpass Game Cube so it's doing just about fine.

Nintendo consoles usually have the hype in the beginning and start to fade away once people learn the games aren't coming so they need to do everything in their power to keep the games coming.

If companies see the Switch as akin to the replacement for 3DS and Nintendo killing off their console line they WILL make games for it because they have always made scaled down games for the handheld market. If developers view it as a Wii U successor you can take on the go, that is a harder sell. Nintendo needs to make damn sure everyone is sold on this  being a handheld first, because everyone has confidence in their handheld division, nobody ever questions if the handheld will get games, even 3DS was slow at first but it got games once it took off.

The unknown is western developers that have moved away from handheld, if this thing is similar enough to their mobile offerings, expect it to be more inline with those, since people DO pay for the mobile games and companies do support mobile think of this as Nintendo's mobile tablet and their handheld which just happens to have TV support, that will all but ensure solid 3rd party support.

Looking at the list, the only major developer not listed, that matters, is Rockstar, and Rockstar has been the only company to go on record as saying they will never make games for Nintendo again. Now the new CEO has to convince them he is not Iwata or Yamauchi before they even have a chance of mending those wounds.

I thought the rumor said 128 GB cards were supported? Also no it's not easy to keep multiple cards around, I mean I am a photographer, I have multiple cards sure but they are for specific uses, I wouldn't want to have to keep track of my games cards too. I have 1 SD card I use in my Wii U for Wii stuff and 1 inside my Wii I used for Wii stuff, all the rest I swap out for photos. I take a lot of photos. But what happens when I am scrambling to grab an empty SD card and I pick up the one with my switch games, that could be a problem.

IF they allow support for up to 128 GB I will be getting 128 GB SD card just for this, whatever format it supports or requires. I am still hoping it will have at least that much internally but if reports are 32GB get confirmed then that could be disheartening. I don't think Hard drives will work but maybe they could support flash drives? At least with Flash Drives you can meet in the middle.
Otherwise it could be a return to the days where you ONLY keep the games you intend to play on hand and leave the rest at home? If nothing else it had better be able to run off the cards, I assume this will be the case since they fixed that for Wii and have allowed it ever since.

The only way I would pay for a Virtual Console subscription, after giving it years of consideration, would be if they found a way to use some legal loophole that says they have a right to redistribute ANY piece of software that was released on their old consoles. That way they can go for 100 percent of the licensed stuff. If there is no way to do that forget it. I can get the ROMS for free.

What I like about the Virtual Console is I get to pick and choose which games I pay for and download. A Subscription service might have games on a rotating basis like Netflix, or it might be a situation where you can only play a certain number of games each  month offline or otherwise, and that sucks.

I look at the entire Wii and Wii U virtual Console, hell I can throw 3DS in there too, its sort of a mess but value wise its not worth paying monthly for. I mean what happens when the month rolls around where your limited to Clu Clu Land, Wrecking Crew and Excite Bike as your NES offerings, and you can't even play NES Remix to get your Mario/Zelda fix because its locked to the Wii U/3DS?

I used to be a champion of this sort of service until I realized all the legal entanglements they would have to unwind and all the money they would have to fork over, there is no way to do it cheaply.

As it stands, even if I could get the entire Virtual Console library, that means Wii, Wii U and 3DS I wouldn't pay more than $5 a month for that. I checked how many games I owned and how much I paid for them, many, many of the games I downloaded only because they were freebies from one of those trade in virtual points for games promotions or those really rare buy games and earn bonus double points they did when I bought my Wii U. I added it up I have over 120 games for the Virtual Console, and I paid a little over $600 total over the course of ten years. That comes out to $60 a year, average. That is taking into account all the games I got for free. That comes out to $5 a month. They sure as hell are not going to offer a service worth paying for at that price. If not for freebies that would have been just over $2300, yeah I really took advantage of that point system and all the freebies I could get.

Of course I didn't count as free the games that were gifted to me because someone paid for those. Usually Kairon because he is a giver and a true fan.

@sm2k
I had both an n64 and a playstation(and a Saturn)

I can safely say Nintendo 64 was better than Sony Playstation.

Playstation was all smoke and mirrors. The only thing Playstation had over n64 was FMV. All of which were fairly short at fleeting. If you watch those FMVs now they don't even look as good as modern games. When you actually played the games, the games on n64 80% looked better. All the Playstation fanboys were tricked and have continued  their brainwashing every since. I was one of those people that had a friend show off Final Fantasy VII to me, and I was unimpressed.

as far as not having Bluray. My roommate had an Xbox One. Its Bluray drive doesn't work worth a ****. It stopped working a month after he got it. We just ended up having to use the Bluray player. For the most part, all of these systems play Netflix anyway. The only use of a Bluray player is playing movies not on Netflix, which you have to usually hunt down from a redbox(which itself has a limited selection), or a still in business "mom and pop" video store. Also worth noting, many Blurays come with Ultraviolet, which is a service that lets you stream the same movie off the internet.  Optical media is dead. But we're all on the same page there.

I know this Perm, you have said it a thousand times. I meant my post as generalizations mostly. But you do fall into a smaller audience, like it or not more people had PS1 than N64 or they had both. In fact I had both, you said your self you had both.

Okay but the world has now changed the tables have turned, nobody cares about disc media anymore they all watch Netflix. So that is no longer a deterrent from the Nintendo console.

I think we're on the same page, I was saying nobody is going to care this thing doesn't have Blu Ray its a non issue.

If this thing doesn't have a Sim City game I will be super pissed, Touch screen or no touch screen come on Nintendo that was one of the BEST games on the SNES. They also need to beg EA to give them all the current SIMS and make them Switch exclusive, for consoles.

But again, this sort of solves that problem by its very existence. Whatever the output was for Wii U and 3DS that is now combined. So it will have the games at a faster pace. IF by some dumb luck it turns out that is not the case and they are still going to release a separate 3rd pillar then all bets are off we might as well sell our Nintendo stock now and prepare for SNES mini the next year.

61
I think that people are so negative against Nintendo that if there isn'ts some power behind it, it's going to be as dead as Wii U when it comes out. This thing is competing against not only Xbox One, ps4, ps4 pro, Xbox one Scorpio, Ipad, Samsung Galaxy Tablet, Old xbox360s and ps3s, PCs, Wii u, 3ds, Android TV, Cell phones, Razer Forge TV, etc...

I think the smartest thing to do for Nintendo is have scalability. Nintendo needs Switch to be a unified operating system platform, but it could have different levels of power. I think the best way for Nintendo to skip the power arms race, is to disrupt it.

Also, I would imagine Sony and Microsoft have paid corporate spies. They probably knew about Switch, and that's why PS4 PRO and Scorpio had to come out.

I would buy that. My source within Microsoft suggested they are really scrambling to figure out how to make sure this thing doesn't become a threat to Surface. Their not at all concerned for Xbox, but that is a different division he sort of acts like its the redheaded stepchild and since he works on Windows they all scoff at Xbox anyways. But Sony doesn't have a tablet on the market and this is not going to sway anyone looking at PS4 Pro.

General Chat / Re: What kind of gamer are you?
« on: October 26, 2016, 01:31:50 PM »
I am a gamer. I play retro games, modern games, old school games, PC games, cell phone games, tabletop D&D games, Magic the Gathering, console games, portable game & watch type games, Pong games, you name it I play it. Arcade games. But most of the modern games I play are retro-esque to me or have a retro feel.

However I do not play competitive games or online games. I just don't invest enough time to get good enough to compete with other people and I hate the smack talk that goes with online gaming.

As for political, not sure what it was before but, hey take a chance the rules are bendy around here anyways. Trust me on this. ;)

So we can already calculate Wii U total lifetime sales. If they stopped manufacturing and sales end once they run out, that means there won't be more to sell after March right? So it beat Dreamcast, are there any other consoles that did better than Dreamcast it passed? I know it won't come close to Game Cube now. That is sad if you think about it, selling half of what their last worst selling home console sold.
I wonder how it compares to PC Engine.

All I know is either it better have a touch screen for Virtual Console alone or they had better keep supporting Wii U Virtual Console for at least another 2 years, there are plenty of DS games I want to purchase for my Wii U that I haven't gotten around to yet if they had a way to get those games on Switch I would be into that.

66
$299 is the top price for me. Anything above that and I will wait for a price drop. But I am willing to pay that much. I would be more happy with $249 or even better Game Cube's magic $199 but that might be a pipe dream.

If Nintendo is not marketing kids instead going after the gamer culture, which they should be doing, then there is a chance they will price it higher to avoid image issues. But if it's $349 at launch I will wait.

Mass market for a high end electronic device can be $350, but at that price this thing better have some really good media capabilities and support Apps that are more than just gaming.

Zelda isn't the sales driver people like to pretend it is. It's about the most hard core game Nintendo has and has a very strong, devoted following, but it's really not their strongest franchise. They need a Mario before Christmas period.

If they really want to come out swinging they need a damn good Mario game day one. Mario sells consoles, especially when done how the fans want and 3D World is a game many wanted and enjoyed but it came later than the game people weren't asking for. THIS is a game we have all been asking for since the last Galaxy, even people that actively hate or dislike Wii remote still bought and loved Galaxies.

Mario Kart and Splatoon in the same holiday makes it a good showcase for the console and gets a broad variety out up front, a competitive shooting game, a competitive racing game, an open world RPG-like game, and a Mario game that looks like it should be fun.

Having too many games up front is not a bad thing either. Getting as many of the sequels and franchise games out of the way as they can up front gives them plenty of room down the road to experiment. They need to space out their side stuff like DK, Kirby, Metroid, F-Zero, Punch Out, Excite Bike, etc, but they are going to want to get as many games as they can as fast as they can.

I also bet they have something Pokemon related ready by the first holiday.

That's another thing. Why would the dock have USB hubs unless for storage? I doubt you can access the usb storage when on the jet plane with your Switch, so there must be something to it.

Smash Bros. USB is needed fro the  GameCube Controller Hub. Smash sold 15mil copies on Wii U/3DS sos you'd best believe they need that to work on the Switch.

I don't think what Smash on Wii U/3DS has to do with Switch, it is an entirely new console it's going to have it's very own version of Smash Bros. Probably be much better at scaling down to the smaller size, and to that end, did the 3DS even support the Game Cube controllers or was that just for Wii U? Because if it wasn't supported on 3DS there isn't a need for that support with Switch as it has a controller option that appears to satisfy the need for Game Cube style controllers. Unless people are just so stuck in the past they can't let that go.

Plugabugz:  Since this might be the last movie for Hugh Jackman to play Wolverine, they wanted to tell another story.  It also seems they are trying to tell stories influenced by popular comics in the X-Men franchise.  Old Man Logan is pretty influential.

I personally like that they are jumping around and telling interesting good stories than just trying to continue a story.  I was also quite impressed with that trailer.

"They wanted to tell another story" seems to be the running theme of nearly the entire movie franchise though.

It's no different than what they do in the comic books though. I am glad the movie adaptations are doing what worked in the comics, forgetting minute continuity crap that inhibits the story and just giving themselves the freedom to make each movie it's own thing. I like how you can jump into any X-Men movie and it has a story you can watch. The other Avengers stuff if you miss one movie you feel like you missed an entire season of a TV show and don't know what the hell is going on.

Reminding people of the awesome of Lindsay Lohan used to be a crusade of mine. Then one day I woke up and realize awesome was the very wrong word to describe that mess of a human being. Maybe that is why people hated me so much, I used to post pictures of her all the time.

Battery life could be an issue to many people. My question is what is the acceptable length before it becomes unacceptable? For my style of play this will be a home console that I might use Wii U offtv style from time to time. I won't be using it as a true handheld all that often. I would be fine with say 5-7 hours on a charge. Less than that would be manageable for my needs but probably not for others.

For some reason I look at that JoyCon Grip and my conspiracy-addled brain keeps whispering to me "Is that a Touchpad? Is that a Touchpad?"

Has anyone seen that new Lethal Weapon series? I had my reservations at first but it's actually kinda good. Not as good as the movies but it works I think.
I only watched the first two episodes but I like it so far.
I feels a pretty mediocre for me. It isn't crazy enough or violent enough and the chemistry between the leads are weak at best. Murtage sounds like he is whining most of the time instead of bitching about real issues like he is in fear for his life. Rigg has no edge to him, he takes some risks but he isn't taking crazy near suicidal levels of it and he doesn't really troll Murtage.

The relationship between Riggs and the psychologist is laughable and badly written. The relationship he should be comedic not serious. Riggs is suppose to be dealing with his issues with Murtage during the quiet times and even then it isn't often.

The biggest problem with the music is there doesn't seem to be any. The movies used it to mark important moments, the show feels like it has nothing.

More you watch it more it just feels like any other cop show and a cheap one at that.

I only watched the first 2 episodes so far. I agree with most of your criticisms and at first I thought man if this wasn't called Lethal Weapon I wouldn't be watching it. But I think it does a good job adapting the movie to Television, which is a different medium than movies. The music I understand, they probably don't want to get into a Wonder Years situation where the music rights makes home video releases a nightmare considering studios make all their money off home video these days. It's definitely no Psych but it I don't know I liked the first two episodes.
It did drag a little in episode 2 and Gotham is back in full force so there is a real chance I stop watching all together, it didn't exactly have me hooked or anything.

On the subject of Gotham, still keeping me hooked.

NES Classic has the potential to do Amiibo sales figures, Nintendo knows this. Don't under estimate the demand for retro NES crap. Regardless of sales potential, that thing needs zero marketing, the entire internet is already talking about it, and if you do come across one in a drug store it's an easy sell, almost an impulse buy. The real issue is if they understimate the potential and create a situation where scalpers are the only ones making money. Unless of course the scalpers all work for Nintendo under cover and that is how they stretch their dollar just a little further.

I doubt that matters these days. Like I said in another thread, the reason battery life mattered in the Game Boy era was you had to shell out cash for those suckers. We are in an age of universal battery charging now. Hell you want to know where USB chargers are sold, not in electronic stores where they belong, at frigging gas stations. Battery life is an absolute non issue here. As long as they can get 3 hours out of a charge that is all they need, considering everyone has universal access to chargers 24/7 no matter where you go. Even at the lake they have charging stations at the restrooms these days. And car chargers are a dime a dozen.

Nope Battery life doesn't worry me at all, especially if you use this at home where it will be plugged in and charging, then take it on the go, the on the go part realistically when are you going to need more than 3 to 5 hours? Now if battery life is under an hour yeah okay that would be an issue. I assure you that won't happen, they are stupid at times but they aren't that stupid.
