Title: Top 10 Nintendo published games (2000 - 2009)
Post by: Miyamoto on December 05, 2016, 02:03:34 PM
The subject title is pretty self explanatory. I'll probably miss some obvious ones (also, I'm not including direct sequels) but here goes:

1 ) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii 2007)
2 ) WarioWare (Gameboy Advance 2003)
3 ) Pikmin (Gamecube 2001)
4 ) Wind Waker (Gamecube 2003)
5 ) Mario Kart DS (DS 2005)
6 ) Metroid Fusion (Gameboy Advance 2002)
7 ) Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Gameboy Advance 2003)

8 ) Luigi's Mansion (Gamecube 2001)
9 ) Mother 3 (Gameboy Advance 2006)
10 ) Wii Sports (Wii 2006)

Hmmm, I'm not 100% happy with this list but it's pretty close. There's a bunch of games that are very close to making the list. By the way, I'm really not much of a Smash Bros fan, and I like the Metroid Prime games but not enough to put them on the list.

I like this idea. However, I think it belongs in the Console Section since that is more Nintendo-centric than General Gaming so I'm moving it there. I need to think about this for a moment and then make my own list.

I will give this a try but I am certain you will not like my list.

If the rules are Nintendo published but does not mean created by Nintendo that is a little loose for my liking but fair enough. If it can be anything by Nintendo and not exclusive to a console or a handheld meaning you can mix and match that complicates things. That is why these types of lists drive me crazy. Or I was crazy to begin with and these lists fit right into my world.

Or I could just make a damn list, how about that.

Ranked in order of best at the top.

4. Star Fox Adventures

I don't thnk this game is remembered all that well, but I have very fond memories of playing it. I think it's one of the best looking games of the generation. It really says something about Nintendo's calibre that we can both make a top ten list and have not a single game in common.

I am pretty sure we have disagreed over this before but I honestly think this game is only hated because Rare left Nintendo. And yes, it is a testament how large their portfolio is like you said we both made top 10 lists and not a single game was the same.

To be fair, I am not a Nintendo only fan so my tastes are vastly larger than just what appears on their machines.

don't get me wrong, I think it's a great game too, it's just that when it comes up in podcasts and such it usually fails to get the praise it deserves.

oh I agree. I just was never emotionally attached to Rare so for me I enjoyed the game for what it was, and not being a fan of the mainline Star Fox series helped me fall in love with it, also it was a much better Zelda than that awful Peter Pan and the Pirates knock off.

All right I'll play. I hope all of these were Ninty published, think so anyway. Also kinda annoying 2010 isn't allowed haha, Sin & Punishment Star Successor would've been a high contender!
There's a lot of obvious greatest hits missing, like Mario Galaxy and Wind Waker but to my eternal shame I've not played enough of those to really speak on them.

1. Metroid Prime - played this years after release after remembering all the hype it got in magazines and thinking it could never live up to the 10/10 scores I was seeing. While I don't think it's perfect (that ending fetchquest...), it came very, very close.
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee - yeah its sequel had a better roster, but this one still gets pulled out from time to time. The leap from 64 to Melee is spectacular too.
3. F-Zero GX - I'm absolutely awful at this but it really, really hooked me for a while. If you could somehow capture its essence in pill format, rave culture would be revived overnight. *nyeeeeowwww*
4. Pokémon Gold/Silver - the Western releases were in 2000 & 2001 right, so I'm counting this. Improved on the original so much, people are praising the convenience improvements in Sun/Moon right now - Gold/Silver did a similar thing back then. And it was in colour! Had two main quests! A great sequel.
5. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - this felt very daunting initially. So many numbers & missions, anime tropes that were unfamiliar to me, it demanded slow methodical gameplay which I wasn't used to... But some of the characters really grew on me, I even read all those static dialogues it would let me. I messed up early on and tore a family of brothers apart. It tackled potent issues like racism head-on, a type of social commentary I often found lacking in games back then (also why I love Beyond Good & Evil so much).
6. Star Fox Adventures - yeah it's objectively not very good. It kinda falls apart halfway through and has some incredibly frustrating parts, a crap ending and some suuuuper cringey cutscenes. But that hub-world is gorgeous, the music is so atmospheric, I like the brief Arwing sections, the social order of the dinosaurs... But yeah. Rose tinted glasses all the way.
7. Wii Sports - feels kinda weird including this maybe, but EVERYONE wanted to play Wii tennis or boxing with you during this moment in time. Wii felt like it would revolutionize gaming, and I really wanted to buy into the motion illusion. It was so accessible, brought people together. For social impact alone this stands out.
8. Doshin The Giant - anyone remember this? The GameCube port of a 64DD game. My gaming has always been pretty limited to mostly Nintendo, but I did see god-sims like Black & White on PC at friends. To have something like that on console was pretty cool. I don't know if this would really hold up nowadays, it was pretty obtuse to be honest. But also very quirky and unlike anything else on the market.
9. Mario Power Tennis - sure, it's just tennis. But with singles, doubles, multiplayer, special moves, quite a big roster, a hilarious opening FMV, weird challenges and a few single player modes this was really cool. Secretly more fun than multiplayer staples like Mario Party.
10. Wave Race: Blue Storm - this GameCube launch title's controls were a little less intuitive than its predecessor's, but it was still a good time. The wave physics and just general look of the water really impressed me back then. Years later I read in a magazine how to unlock a "sarcastic announcer" who mocks your skills during the race. It feels like those types of dumb cheats have been less prevalent in recent years.

Boom! Maybe if I thought longer about it things like Eternal Darkness or DK Jungle Beat would push a few ones off the list but eh. Also makes me realise how little things I played on Wii... DKC:R was 2010 so that isn't eligible sadly.

I almost put Wii sports on my list, but if you look at my gaming history as a whole, 2009 is the year I lost interest in Nintendo for a very long time so to me most of my fond memories are before that machine came into existence. I think that is why Super Paper Mario made the cut, it started out as a Game Cube game and if it had stayed there I would easily bump it up 2 notches as I just hate the stripped down Wiimote controls and day dream what it would have been like on the Game Cube with a proper controller. I do that with a lot of Wii games hence why I despise the Wii more often than not. I loved the Game Cube controller, and that has nothing to do with Smash, I am NOT competitive at all, in fact I suck at Smash. And I played it strictly as a single player game and still loved it. I just loved the nostalgia, it had all those trophies and levels from every franchise that was in the game it was a much better Mario game at times than Sunshine, at times. I would give Sunshine a lot more love if the cutscenes were skipable and if it didn't take so long to get to the good levels.

For easy reference for users, here's a list of Nintendo published games over that time. Not every single thing is going to be here. There's no Satelliteview or 64DD. I completely forgot about the Pokémon Mini. I'm going to change my list so it's Super Mario Galaxy and then all nine games for that.

So, there's 556 titles on that list. Now, some are sort of duplicated. You'll see there is Metroid Prime GC but there is also Metroid Prime New Play Controls and Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii listed. For the most part, it is the same game but someone may want to list it under one release and someone else may want to list it under another. Another example is the Electroplankton titles for DSiWare. I'm pretty sure those are all just the different modes from Electroplankton DS separated and sold individually. So, if you have Electroplankton DS, then you'll have all those titles already. Some of the titles are a technicality like World of Goo because Nintendo published it in Japan but it was published by the developers here in North America. Some games are Japan-only so it will be hard for them to crack most user's top ten lists.

For myself, I stuck with just the titles for the console I actually own. For instance, although Twilight Princess is going to be a similar experience in many ways for those that played it on GC or those that played it on Wii, I only played it on GameCube because that is the version I own and I've never played it with the Wii controls. Thus, I wouldn't list the Wii version in my list if I had it on there. That brought the list down to 134.

I then whittled down the list to titles I've actually beat/completed or played a significant portion of the game to feel I could accurately judge it. For instance, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin I never finished but I was about 6-7 campaigns away from completing the main story when I last checked. So, I had gotten about 75% of the way through. Whereas Star Fox Adventures, I've seen the opening cinematics and got to the point where Fox McCloud landed on Sauria but I haven't advanced any further than that. Barely scratched the surface of that game so I can not accurately judge it.

Surprisingly, that still left me 80 games to choose from. From that point, I removed the games I didn't like. I removed games that may have had some fun stuff but as a complete package were just so-so. Then I had to start asking myself, "If I could never play this again, would I be alright with that?" That question whittled away things like Mario Party games, remakes/remasters like Kirby Super Star Ultra and even some heavy hitters like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Sage and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

At that point, it then became a hard fight as I seemed to be comparing nostalgic memories against themselves. Comparing how I felt when I first played a game to how I feel when I play it now. Debating the fine points of what Metroid Prime does compared to Metroid Prime 2. Should the similarities hurt 2 or should I recommend it as the Metroid Prime game to play and then if someone were to play the first one after, they might think it is lessor compared to Prime 2? What sort of objectivity should I be using to judge these games?

Finally, I was at the point where I eliminated Smash Bros. Brawl and had a top 20. And that's what I'm going with. It's hard to be as objective with games because the time poured into them can vary for each person plus games that were released further back have a better chance of reviewing well than games released closer to the present because of nostalgia and getting played over multiple times to reinforce one's love of the title making it harder for a newer game to make as much as an impact or to be compared to how it isn't like a past/favorite game. Moreover, with me, although I would like to have seen a more diverse representation, my list is GameCube heavy because that is the era I was able to spend the most time playing games. During the Wii years around 2007-2008, my gaming time sort of dried up and I'm still playing catch-up with some of those titles released in that period. Plus, the cutoff date of 2009 removed some of the titles I was thinking of for the Wii like Kirby's Epic Yarn or Super Mario Galaxy 2 which were 2010. (That really was a strong year for the Wii.) But it is what it is. This is a representation of my gaming history and preferences. So, now that you have this unnecessarily long spiel of how I worked out my list, let's get to it!

Here it is, chumps. The definitive Evan_B List.

Metroid Prime- Undeniably the best published game on the Gamecube, Metroid Prime is pure joy and solid design.
Metroid: Zero Mission- Zero Mission is more straightforward and less exploratory than its competitor, Super Metroid, but that doesn't make it any less satisfying, challenging, and incredible.
Super Smash Bros. Melee- The only Nintendo Fighter to retain its relevance and staying power during this era and the next, its depth might have been the result of glitches, but it's also a fun game despite that.
Super Mario Sunshine- The truly superior 3D Mario platformer of this era, possibly bested by Galaxy 2, but not by Galaxy. Sunshine mixes an expanse moveset with frustrating precision and a great aesthetic.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door- The best Paper Mario, the game features the tightest combat in the franchise, an interesting aesthetic that stands in stark contrast from Sunshine's tropic theme, and a surprisingly touching and varied story.
Pikmin- Pikmin is too hard. It's too limiting. Arguments of the weak individuals that prefer Pikmin 2.
Wario Land 3- The pinnacle of the Wario Land series is the most Collect-a-thon-like 2D platformer in existence, but that doesn't mean its gameplay isn't satisfying, its challenge enjoyable, and it's aesthetic immensely charming.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap- Move over, Wind Waker, the real superior Zelda title has come out to play. It's fascinating dual-world mechanic turns an admittedly-small Hyrule into a dense treasure trove of secrets, and the items and unique dungeon mechanics make it more interesting than Wind Waker's rather bland and standard design. It also has a great GBA soundtrack.
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver- The definitive Pokemon experience. Did you like having two regions? Now have them with prettier graphics and a deeper narrative. Liked how Pikachu followed you around? Now you can have any Pokemon do so. Like good music? Here's a soundtrack. More varied than the games that surround it, HGSS utilize the best elements of the DS installments and also have the Pokewalker, which is a thing.
Wii Sports- Yes, it was a huge gambit. Yes, it's not all that deep a game. But Wii Sports was a phenomenon for both gamers and non-gamers alike, and it got us to stand up and enjoy games with each other in a way that had never been done before. You have to give it credit for that.

I would have found either half of your list acceptable if you had included Kirby 64. But alas.

Alas.

I would have found either half of your list acceptable if you had included Kirby 64. But alas.

Alas.

Honestly, I did have to think hard about that one too for just the music / OST alone. If that was the only criteria, I'd dare say it would probably make top 5 of that list. It's got some great, great themes.

Ultimately, I think you and I agree on a lot. You rank TTYD higher on your list whereas I'm more positive on the original but it's not like I disdain TTYD. It just didn't make the top ten for me over a few imperfections I perceive  about the game compared to the first. Haven't played Heartgold/Soulsilver, Wario Land 3 or Minish Cap to know what I might think of them in relation to my list. The only one I really disagree with is Wii Sports. Aside from Bowling, I never cared for anything else on the disc. It never felt like I was in control with the games except for Bowling. That was the only one where the illusion worked.

As for Pikmin, I do like the game. It was one of the first few titles I owned for the system but that game puts me through an emotional wringer. It's depiction of nature can be brutal sometimes and there's nothing worse than your little Pikmin croaking from an error you made or a predator taking them down. At the same time, watching the Pikmin harvest the bodies of their fallen foes is also a little creepy. At the end of the day, it is a kill or be killed game and, even though it is necessary for your survival, sending your zombie-like hordes to tear the enemy apart on all sides is such an odd thing to see from Nintendo. It may be labelled E for Everyone but I think it is one of their most mature titles. That odd dichotomy makes it hard for me to fully embrace the game like I have with Sunshine or Zero Mission.

Awwwww. Let's hug it out, brosef! I've always respected you too, ever since we started fighting the good fight for Sunshine on these forums a couple years ago. I'm glad you've warmed back up to these forums because I've always enjoyed your opinion and take on the world of Nintendo gaming.

This thread is over. No other opinions need now apply.  8)  ;)
