Nintendo fans will have a long wait for the next Dragon Quest title.

In a statement following the confirmation today of Dragon Quest XI's overseas release for PC via Steam and PlayStation 4, Square Enix confirmed that the Switch version is coming "much later" while the 3DS version would not be localized.

A desire to focus on Western growth of the series is cited as the reason for no localization of the 3DS version, while the Switch version is still deep in development. "We are also developing the Switch version for Europe and North America... but development is expected to take a long time from a technological standpoint as well, so we still have a long way to go until its release." The Switch version of Dragon Quest XI has not yet released in Japan.

They missed the boat pretty much on localising the 3DS version

I've been dreading the inevitable end of the 3DS but I think this is finally it.  We've seen Nintendo continually announce stuff and Atlus continuing to localize titles for a lot longer than we would have expected but if the 3DS was going to last beyond 2018 then DQXI could probably have been localized.

No surprise there.  Now the *real* question is whether or not it will get a fan translation. 


These days "localized" actually means "censorship" when it comes to RPG's.  *cough* Dragon Quest 8, Bravely Default/Second Fire Emblem *cough*.  Fan translations would retain the sexy costumes and what ever else they think is "inappropriate" for non Japanese people.

It is hard to decide whether to wait for Switch or buy it on PS4.  If I had a good PC, I'd probably buy it for that.  As it is, waiting for Switch might make sense for a game that makes so much sense for portable play.  I don't think I would have purchased the 3DS version anyway, given the resolution.

A fan translation would be nice.  It would be a lot of work, though.

I wonder why it is taking so long for Switch.  It was one of the first announced games, and it doesn't look THAT technically advanced.

Square Enix doesn't give a rats butt about Nintendo fans outside of Japan. Nearly every game they make for a Nintendo system ends up being published by Nintendo outside of Japan because SE doesn't want to bother. This is them giving us the middle finger. There is no reason they couldn't release the 3DS version here, and the fact that the Switch version is gonna be at LEAST 4 months behind the PS4 and Steam versions is an insult.

I wonder if Sony is involved in some way.  Two of the biggest franchises in Japan are Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest.  Despite the most recent games in those series showing up on a Nintendo system, and the Switch's immediate success, Monster Hunter World is on every platform but the Switch and this is being delayed for the Switch.  Hmmmmmmm.
