TalkBack / Re: Pikmin 3 Draws Influence From First Pikmin, More Stressful
« on: January 02, 2013, 03:33:40 PM »
I would categorize the two Pikmin games as this:

Pikmin 1 is a game about survival. From the outset you realize that your life depends on how well you survive on the alien planet. You needed to work with the Pikmin in order to fix your ship as well as battle the elements, the creatures and time itself. It indeed made it a "tense" game to play through, but in my case I loved it because at the very end of it all when you achieved the ultimate goal you feel satisfied. You survived despite it all.

Pikmin 2 is all about exploration. Even with limitations and dangers imposed, you CAN play through the game and just explore it all. This has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that you can enjoy the alien world better and get a better feel of it because the last time you played through it you were focused on survival. The disadvantage is that there is no real goal beyond finding treasure to pay off a debt. That may be a fun goal for some but it doesn't have the thrills of survival on a dangerous alien planet.

It is all a matter of preference. Me? I enjoyed Pikmin 1 far more. The second game did absolutely nothing for me, I am afraid.

Ironically, I didn't think Wind Waker was THAT radical. Link's horse became the boat, the field turned into the sea, and the dungeons were island. The art style certainly changed, but as Twilight Princess proved, art style does not a game make.

Truth is there HAVE been Zelda games where the formula has been changed, and they are usually met with extreme criticism from the fans. Zelda II changed completely after the first game, and people see it as the first. Majora's Mask also played a big role in the change after Ocarina of Time and gamers found it to be frustrating. The two Game Boy Color games were well received but didn't get a lot of exposure. Four Swords Adventure added multiplayer to the mix and that didn't set the world of fire. So naturally, Nintendo sees this and thinks "well, we gotta stick to the formula since that is what gamers want, apparently".

I think the problem here is that the cost of game development has risen dramatically in the last few years, and thus it has become harder for the big companies to implement innovation onto their games. Hell, the Wii U doesn't have a lot of games that truly change the way games are play (there are a few games, yes, but they play it safe). So with a series like Zelda, expect them to take slow instances of innovation because they know that gamer acceptance isn't always a guarantee, even with a rock solid concept at play.

The elaborate Miiverse interactions don't all have to be programmed by third parties.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31751

The Wii U's Miiverse feature may inform players about new and upcoming games, among other things, Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen confirmed in an interview with 1UP.

In the interview, Trinen elaborates more about the Miiverse feature. One of these new features is the ability to inform players that the latest Wii U game released. This was explained when Trinen was asked about how the concepts of WiiConnect24 would be presented on the Wii U.

Trinen stated the following about Miiverse:

"Even when you turn on the system, you're going to turn on the system and play a game, and you're going to be seeing stuff popping up through Miiverse. Maybe you're going to learn about a new game that's coming, or maybe you're going to learn about something amazing that somebody did in a game. You see that pop up and you're like, "What? Wait a second, I didn't know about that."

When asked about how third party developers can utilize this, Trinen says that Miiverse interactions don't have to be programmed by the third party themselves, that even if the developers didn't program anything for the game players can still bring it up and see what other players are doing in the game.

TalkBack / Digital Distribution on Wii U Is Up to Third Party Developers
« on: September 16, 2012, 03:11:25 PM »

While Nintendo will have the option available, ultimately it is up to the game's developers whether they want to release a title digitally.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31752

Third party developers will have the option of releasing a game digitally through the eShop, Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen expressed in an interview with 1up.

When asked about Nintendo's initiative about moving forward with digital distribution of titles, Trinen explained that they plan on having both digital and on-retail titles readily available at the launch of the Wii U. While Nintendo has adopted the mentality for their own titles, it is up to the third party developer whether they want to launch a title digitally or not.

Trinen's words on the matter are as follows:

"For third parties... One thing that we don't do is try to force their hand. We don't want to require them to do it. It's really a decision that's up to them, and so it comes down to what their interests are and how they want to offer it."

Even if Nintendo is moving ahead with their digital distribution plans, Trinen also mentioned that the only titles that will not be sold digitally are those that require a peripheral for the game to be enjoyed, such as Nintendo's own Sing Party since it requires a microphone.

TalkBack / Wii U to Have 2GB Internal Memory, GPGPU Support
« on: September 13, 2012, 03:44:26 AM »

The system's memory will be 20 times that of the original Wii.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31665

The main Wii U system memory will total 2 GB, the Nintendo Direct press conference confirmed.

Of this memory, 1 GB of RAM is intended for use by games while the other 1 GB of RAM is reserved for the Wii U system's own functionality. Nintendo pointed out that 2GB amounts to 20 times that of the original Wii. It is not clear whether more RAM will be made available to games in the future. (Support for using the second CPU core on the 3DS was added months after launch).

In addition, the Wii U will support general purpose GPU computation, meaning that non-graphics calculations can be performed on the AMD graphics processor. This is useful for highly parallel computations such as physics engines. No more details were made available.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata also confirmed the size of the Wii U's game discs. The discs will be able to contain up to 25 GB of data, and the drive will have a read speed of 22.5 MB/s.

Capcom's Lost Planet spin-off will be Japan exclusive.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31611

Capcom has no plans to bring over the Lost Planet spin-off title, EX Troopers, to western shore, Senior Vice President Christian Svensson recently confirmed. The confirmation came in a response in their "Ask Capcom" forum thread. When a member asked about the game's future in North America, the official response was as follow:

"No because EX Troopers isn't part of the LP series officially (thus the difference in name) nor are there plans to bring it Westward at this time."

As stated, EX Troopers is a spin-off of the Lost Planet series with an anime aesthetic designed for the 3DS. It will be released in Japan on November 22.

TalkBack / Next Smash Bros. Game Has Taken Top Priority at Namco
« on: July 10, 2012, 10:43:58 PM »

The scope of the project is so large that people behind some of Namco's major franchises have stepped in to help.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31021

The next Super Smash Bros. game, which will be a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Namco Bandai, has taken top priority at Namco, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada confirmed in an interview with NowGamer.

"Obviously it’s a big priority for the company," Harada ellaborates further, "so company-wide there are a lot of people involved with that particular project. Not just from Tekken but a lot of our franchises. "

Hara also explained that the core Tekken team is still working on completing Tekken Tag Tournament 2, but that a great deal of the team is also at work on the next Smash Bros. game. Also, Harada revealed that one of the most popular questions they have received from gamers ever since the game was announced is whether we can expect appearances from Namco Bandai characters.

"We’re not really sure at this moment but when thinking of the playerbase who is playing Smash Bros, maybe Tekken characters is something they wouldn’t want, so I’ve been pulling back on that a bit. But I don’t know."

Namco Bandai's involvement with the game was revealed on June 21 during Nintendo Direct. Series director Masahiro Sakurai will be working with Namco Bandai's developers.

The Wii U version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will use the GamePad in a far simpler manner.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31025

The Wii U's GamePad could be potentially distracting for fighting games, Tekken series leader Katsuhiro Harada recently told Eurogamer in an interview.

Harada feels that for fighting games, the Wii U's GamePad could distract gamers during a match. Due to this, the Wii U version of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will use it in a simpler manner.

Harada elaborates that "looking at the small screen and the big screen at the same time is pretty distracting for a fighting game, so we're thinking of making it useful as a way of having shortcuts."

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will be released on September 14. The Wii U version is set to release in the system's launch window title and will include some exclusive features.

13

Hint: it might be about their download services.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31024

Capcom Corporate Officer/Senior Vice-President Christian Svensson explained why Capcom's Marvel-based fighting games have yet to hit Nintendo systems.

A fan on Capcom's Unity forums asked why the popular Capcom fighting games had yet to appear on any of Nintendo's systems, whether as retail titles or downloadable games. The answer Svensson offered is as follows:

"It's not some sort of spite thing. It's just that on current generation consoles, the most sizable base of active digital consumers has been on the X360 and PS3. Bear in mind, this game was green lit more than a year ago when I did the deal with Marvel."

Svensson, however, made the statement that future downloadable game projects will indeed be appearing on Nintendo systems. "Don't worry though, on some future unannounced Capcom projects, Nintendo platforms will get digital love from us."

TalkBack / Madagascar 3: The Video Game Review
« on: July 10, 2012, 08:34:10 PM »

Insert obnoxious Afro Circus song here.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/31020

Video games have always been part of the surprise phenomenon that is Dreamworks' Madagascar series since the release of the first movie in 2005, so of course the third installment in the series is receiving an adaptation. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted for the Wii is a game that does little, wrong or right.

The game follows the basic plot of the film: the four Central Park Zoo animals (Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe) are still trying to find their way back home. This time they end up in Europe, where they join a traveling circus in hopes of finally returning to New York. The game follows some of the events of the story well while also adding new ones, which, at most, should please fans of the movie.

Madagascar 3 has gameplay ideas that differ somewhat from what you might think of as the standard game adaptation. The game's story mode has the characters completing missions (which usually involve collecting and fetching), often with the help of another animal friend. The characters each have unique traits that help the other animal overcome an obstacle or reach a specific area successfully—Gloria can swim and dive into water, Alex can do a double jumb, and Melman can destroy some areas with powerful sneezes. Animal control agents are littered throughout the world, and if any of the animals are spotted they must get away, or else the mission restarts. There are also a few mini-games (which make appearances in the main story mode) you can complete with another player.

Madagascar 3 definitely tries to be more creative by implementing the two-player mechanic. The concept works, but doesn't make the game stand out as something worth playing till the end. Some missions are also quite tedious and confusing, often sending the players running around the level, trying to figure out just how to reach a new area.

Madagascar 3 looks decent; the cities the characters visit are large in size, but blurry textures take some of the feeling of grandeur away. The characters resemble their film counterparts well enough, but lack the detail to make them stand out. While we are spared of the infamous Afro Circus jingle from the movie, the music is there to get the job done, meaning it doesn't grate you with its melodies but provides some semblance of ambiance in the game's world. Obviously, the all-star voice cast doesn't reprise their roles in the game, which uses sound-alikes to get the job done. Like everything else in the game, they do a decent job of giving us an alternate interpretation of the Madagascar franchise.

Madagascar 3 is a game best described as at par. The usage of two characters to complete missions is neat, though unfortunately marred by repetitive and confusing missions, while the additional bonus features do elevate the game a bit. You can do much worse than this game, but you can also do much better.

TalkBack / Re: Killer Freaks Becomes Zombi U
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:28:43 PM »
I have to agree with you guys. The whole Zombie Apocalypse in gaming is beginning to wear out its welcome. We got some great games out of it, but it is definitely time to move on, go back to good old fashioned alien invasion, or create something different.

I mean, as I watched the cinematic for this, I couldn't help but think that it was influenced by Dead Island, especially this trailer:

It's like they saw it and really wanted to create their own version.

TalkBack / Killer Freaks Becomes Zombi U
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:07:50 PM »

The exclusive M-rated game was showcased at the Ubisoft press conference.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30436

Ubisoft has announced Zombi U, a zombie apocalypse-based survival shooter exclusive to the Wii U. The game is the final form of the project once known as Killer Freaks from Outer Space.

At their press conference today, Ubisoft showed off a cinematic trailer of the game. The trailer consisted of shots of people in zombie-infested Great Britain involved in a number of gory situations involving the infected—combined with scenes of cells being infected by the virus—while "God Save the Queen" played in the background.

No actual gameplay footage was shown, though, according to a press release from Ubisoft, the game will use the Wii U GamePad controller, as demos of Killer Freaks did. The press release also detailed several of the first-person shooter's mechanics, including the ability to take control of another survivor upon death, the use of the GamePad's touch screen as an inventory (or "Bug Out Bag"), and a multiplayer mode that places one player in the role of "Zombie Master," giving them a top-down tactical view via the GamePad screen and the ability to spawn zombies against another player, who fights useing the Wii U Pro Controller.

What may have been video of the game was briefly shown in the Nintendo Direct conference yesterday.
