Am I being over sensitive, or do Steve and Ray seem a bit callous about all their colleagues deaths in flaming piles of helicopter wreckage?
Maybe that is how they train mountain rescue workers. Maybe the only way to survive something like a volcano erupting under you is to be bro like in the face of death. Dudes til the end.
Anyone with personal experience care to comment.

Hi RFN forum. 1st post in quite a few years.
Thank you gentlemen for reading my question. I have a few points to make if anybody was interested.
Firstly, I wish that was my entire backlog! Those are just a handful full of games I keep meaning to play through for poops and giggles and I noticed that James had mentioned them all at least once. I forgot to include Project X zone and that DS Hercules game in the list.

My backlog is so out of hand that I have promised my family not to spend any money on games this year. My unplayed games for Nintendo systems alone are over 100. So yeah, I have a slight problem.

Why do I have so many unplayed level 5 games? Why because I bought most of them for a couple of pounds on wet afternoon  at Hemel Hempstead Cash Converters of course! But my family won't go in there with me anymore because of the strong smell of body odur.

Oh and Disaster Day of Crisis cost 50p.

I put and an hour into disaster tonight. I ate two massive hamburgers and an enormous water melon slice. I also survived a volcano, earth quake and wiggled the wii mote a bit. But mostly I watched cut scenes. When does it get bad?

Nope.
I love the Gamepad.
I've got 8 unplayed games piled up for it and at least 5 other released games that I want to try.
Then there are the unreleased games on the slate for this year.

All I've played this month has been Mario Galaxy on the gamepad whilst my family used the TV. So the Gamepad has opened up the Wii back catalog to me properly for the first time.

This is a great console that I am really enjoying.

Just want to jump in on the cloud gaming discussion: Why all the negativity from a technical perspective? At times you guys sounded like you recorded the  podcast in 2009!
Cloud gaming works. It's not at all main stream but anybody who wants to demo Onlive or Gaikai can see for themselves, in fact I am sure I remember John speaking positively of his experience trying Gaikai on the podcast. As Sony are using Gaikai's tech there is no reason to believe it won't work just because the server was in the next room during one demo.
I played through Bioshock on Onlive a couple of years ago and it was a brilliant experience. I don't have fiber optic and my broadband is fairly standard. It's a shame Onlive turned out to be such a lousy company and I'm not convinced that their is much consumer interest in cloud gaming. But heck I'd pay to play PS3 games on my Vita, especially if there is some integration with PS +.

I got to play what turned out to be one of the most fun games I've played in a while because of it (Hotline Miami).

Easily my favourite Vita game we've had through Plus in the UK. I need to go back and finish it but I'm all about Zelda LBW right now.

I was explaining to my wife the other day that one of the pains of the Nintendo enthusiast is knowing more then the chumps who work in video game retail (both on and off line).

I know, I know, you and your cousin both work for Gamestation and studied Nintendonomics at Yale. But you are the exception or you wouldn't even be on this forum. And if you don't mind me saying so, you're wasted in retail... I digress.

I bring this up now because in the last week alone I have been thwarted in trying to by a Wii fit U meter from Game (clerk: "You have to buy the game, you can't get the pedometer by itself. It doesn't exist"
Me: "But it's on your own website!"),
Been told by somebody in a store that Nintendo no longer sell eShop vouchers (I guess they meant Wii Shop Channel vouchers. But they had an in store display of eshop vouchers so maybe they just didn't want my money)
But my favourite - I ordered a pre owned Motion Plus from CEX and received.... a wireless nunchuck adapter (but no nunchuck).
I know some of these were designed with motion plus built in but I've tested it and , nah, Wii Sports Resort says it's a useless hunk of off-white plastic.

Thank you for your compliance in my cathartic release.
Now whose got the best 'Dumb Nintendo no-knowing shop assistant' story?

« on: January 08, 2014, 10:16:42 AM »
Can you even name five good Western handheld games in videogame history?

Such Hyperbole!
The Vita has some great Western developed games:

Wipeout 2084
Super Stardust Delta
OMG Z on PSP/Vita and Velocity on PSP/Vita are both great games
Both of Drinkbox studios games are essential in my view
Uncharted is pretty decent
I haven't played Tear Away yet but it's supposed to be good too.
That's 8 not including ports or cross buy games.

Back on Nintendo platforms: I'm not a fan of Wayforward or Renegade kid's games but a lot of people love them. They have each done over 5 high rated games.

Have I just been trolled?

General Gaming / The pain and anxiety of Lindemann Syndrome
« on: January 08, 2014, 07:17:22 AM »
I envision this thread (should anyone part take) as a sort of self help group. At the least it is my first step towards healing.

I have a problem and that problem is Lindemann Syndrome. And it's really started to get on my nerves.
Back in the day (before downloads) I would buy too many games (I cannot resist a bargain) but get sick of my stack and regularly sell anything I hadn't touched in 12 months. I have some regrets such as selling my N64. But in general this is how I funded most of the new systems I have bought and it allowed me to feel like I controlled my games collection, not visa versa.

But like it or not we live in the down load age. Personally I prefer to buy physical media but ALAS I cannot resist a bargain so I get well and truly sucked into online sales. And then there is PS+, the biggest bargain in games IMHO.
I know have 130+ download games just sitting on my various accounts (not counting PS3 titles because I never get to play that console) I know that some of you will have back logs that make that seem tiny, but for me this is a scary prospect. I can't sell these games and the likelihood is that I will never play most of them to any great depth because the new games just keep-a coming.
Now seriously, having this many games that are basically useless has started to weigh on my mind. I can't even give them away, so what good are they?

In December I decided to have a crack at as many of my games as I could. I never played the same game twice and played each one for about 30 - 45 mins max. Just long enough to get a feel for what in my back log was worth some attention and what wasn't. I played 53 games, 17 of which I want to go back to. So I have no shortage of things to play, and a couple of new games each month for the rest of the year via PS+.

But of course Christmas brought me 4 more games and some money, most of which I then blew in online sales on another 8 games.

I'm fascinated by this whole back log phenomenon. I see people all over the internet complaining about their back log. Growing up I would salivate over games in magazines (metaphorically speaking of course) but could only afford a couple each year. The only other way I could get games was to swap them with friends or rent them from a video shop. The notion that I have spent money on a stack of downloadable titles that are not really much good to anyone upsets me some what.

On the plus side I have no money for a while now so will just enjoy my Christmas games for at least the next 4 months. But I'm still haunted by my Lindemann pile.

Thank you for allowing me to express my sad condition. Whose next?

General Gaming / Re: Why aren't game consoles cross-compatible?
« on: December 24, 2013, 06:23:17 AM »
I don't know where this CDi and 3DO cross-compatibility talk is coming from... I've never heard of that before and can't find any supporting evidence.

Cross compatibility between CDi and 3DO isn't what we were on about and never happened. What did happen is in CDi both Philips and Sony owned the format and the idea was for different companies to licence the tech and make their own players, same as happened with CD players. I think Magnavox was the only non Philips company to make a CDi player though.

3DO was also a format manufacturers could license. The only ones I remember were made by Panasonic, Gold star and Sanyo but their may have been more.

General Gaming / Re: Why aren't game consoles cross-compatible?
« on: December 23, 2013, 10:23:33 AM »
I think this is a more interesting question then tendoboy is being given credit for and I like imaging the world it suggests.

As has been pointed out, 3DO and CDi tried it and failed. But I don't personally think they failed because it was a bad idea, they were far too expensive and most of the games weren't as good as what we  already had on SNES, etc. Jaguar and Sega CD failed at the same time too, and they weren't trying to create a universal format, they just cost too much and lacked games.

Ouya doesn't count to me because you have to go through their shop front and use their bespoke controller. So it's not like you could buy a game on your Ouya and transfer it to your Android phone (correct me if I'm wrong).
I don't really see Cross Play in the same way. The dev has to make 2 or 3 bespoke versions of the game, so it's more like those Triple play movie boxes where you get 2 discs and a download code isn't it.

I thought Onlive had a shot as creating a unified experience as it promised the exact same code on my desk top, lap top, TV, tablet and phone. Which it does do.... but it's a pretty terrible service. I guess a cloud service could deliver on that promise some day, but Onlive have proved pretty convincing that it's a very niche thing right now. Watching their big financial failure last year left me worried I had a £40 controller I could never use again (sold it and bought New Super Mario Bros 2. Thank you ebay) and convinced me that physical media is still the best choice because if the makers go bust I still have unlimited access to what I paid for.
I digress.

It's interesting to me that in music and movies there have been various attempts to create what we've essentially had in the console world for a long time: 2 or 3 formats all competing for dominance but managing to co exist. Remember when Philips DCC and Sony Mini Disc were battling it out and both wanted to replace CDs?
Or more recently when people actually paid cash money for HD DVD players?
Or those crazy VCR formats Philip developed in the 70s to compete with VHS and Beta?
Or when Laser Disc was the height of awesome over priced geek chic?

Fun huh!

Double dipped on Liberation Maiden. The iOS version is on sale, I like the 3DS game and was interested enough to see how the controls work to pay £1.50. A sequel would be fun.

Likewise, I don't know anybody who has taken the plunge on Xbone or PS4 but a couple of people in my circle do have Wii U now.
I always figure what matters most is not which console sells best but which one your friends have so you can lend games to each other, get excited about new releases etc. The most fun gaming fun I've had this year was exchanging Animal Crossing progress reports via text messages with a friend.

I can't help thinking this is a slightly gibber announcement than Cranky Kong!
No idea what to make of this though. Seems like a very japan-centric title, I haven't heard anybody in a western market say anything good about the Samurai Warriors games since the PS2.
Is anyone here a big fan or thinking of picking this up? I am intrigued at the prospect of this game!

Well.... I am surprised at how many are leaving positive comments about the Wii U discussion.

I've loved the show for years but this wasn't for me. My favorite part of the podcast is always New Business because I just like hearing the guys getting excited (or angry) about video games and the reminiscing it brings on (LOVED John's Altered Beast quip).

But for me the show is at it's weakest when the focus is on industry analysis and speculation, which is what the whole Wii U segment was really. Greg was very strong in this area but it's not something I feel the show currently does well.

The RFN crew certainly know a lot more about Nintendo then I do and I concede that the sales figures are alarming. But personally I won't be convinced that the sky is falling in until Nintendo officially pull support, Virtual Boy style. This is a company that regularly defy standard expectations. They have squandered their lead and emerged from the shadows before more than once. The only things I believe they do with any constancy is put out games I enjoy and frustrate fans with their impenetrable business decisions.

As for the WiiU, I wish the Game Pad had a higher spec and the virtual console was better curated,  but otherwise I love the console. I am clearly a minority but I feel like it was designed just for me. Off TV Play was what sold me and I have not been disappointed. I can't afford a PS4 and although I love my Vita the analog sticks and shoulder buttons aren't a patch on the Game Pad, so Remote Play doesn't do it for me.

let's the negs begin!

General Gaming / Re: Just got a Vita. Recommendations?
« on: December 18, 2013, 07:26:21 AM »
Hello, just wanted to chip in on the Vita recommendations.

OMG Z is far and away my favourite Vita game and you can get it in 3 wallet friendly flavours (original Mini, Playstation Mobile remake or the full HD Vita version - which does have micro transactions). Check out the reviews that the mini got on metacritic, it really deserves a lot more attention then it has had imo.

I also can't recommend enough Tales From Space: Mutant Bob Attack. One of the best platform games I have played in years. To my mind it is a much better experience then Guacamelee (same dev), which is why I am in the minority who found that game disappointing. I liked it ok and I beat it but it's certainly not my Vita game of the year (Hotline Miami gets that honour).

I second the recommendations for Lumines and Sonic Racing, both solid games.
Urban Trials Free Style, Sine Mora and Velocity HD are all pretty solid games, cheap and well worth a look.

I've got 50+ titles in my Vita library now (does include some PSP and PS1) and it really is an excellent machine. PS+ totally offsets my moaning about the price of memory cards.

Still prefer the 3DS catalog though ;-)

When I saw it I couldn't help thinking of the 0DS mock up
http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18yhov1wf0ysopng/original.png

I love how Nintendo and Sony are now locked in a race to downgrade their portable hardware as much s possible. I guess after getting rid of the screen and battery the next thing to go will be the controls.

BUT SERIOUSLY: I think it's a actually a brilliant idea for a budget console. It's similar to the android micro consoles but from a house hold name in consumer electronics  and with decent controls plus an infinitely better software library (not counting emulators of course).

If you've got PS+ and are stacking up the Vita games in your download library but don't have the actuall console this would be a very cheap way of enjoying a lot of pretty good titles.  There is a list somewhere of what games will be compatible (sounds like the lack of micro phone and touch is here to stay). Add that to the PS4 remote play function and I think it's  very interesting gadget. Heck there must be a small market for screen capture enthusiasts alone.

I doubt it'll be that successful though. People aren't queuing up to play the Vita as it is and the price of PS3 keeps falling. I know I'd rather have access to the PS3 library then the Vita's. And I don't think there is any evidence of micro consoles doing well outside their kick starter campaigns yet.

It'll certainly be interesting to watch this play out.

Nice review Guillaume, it's raised my interest in Crimson Shroud quite a bit. I do like the sound of the table top theme. I'm playing Tactics Ogre for the PSP right now which is my first Matsuno game. I'm only on the second chapter and am finding it a bit too frustrating  and too 'system heavy' so far. I will be happy to support this if it comes to europe in the hope of more Sega 3D arcade ports. Daytona, Virtua Racing and Sega Rally in my pocket please Sega!

At the risk of comparing apples to oranges, people still queue up every year in my local shopping center for the new iphone and ipad. That's regardless of internet shopping or global economics.
At the risk of sailing too close to another "Smart phones are killing video games" debate - I think the biggest factor in a lack of Wii U lines is the comparative lack of enthusiasm for a very different product and marketing message to last time.
