Zelda Warlord, Zakkiel was calling me ignorant, not you.

In any case, I don't know how my opinions make me ignorant. I accept that other people, here being Spak-Spang, may like the original more. I disagree because I think Melee allows for more strategy which is one of the reasons I think Melee is a better game. I didn't mean that the original offered absolutely no strategy, just that Melee offered significantly more.

Anyway...

1. Link's boomerang was ruined. It's too weak in Melee.
2. I don't mind Snake. I'm just curious why they chose Sons of Liberty Snake. Gamecube was the only console not to get MGS2 in some form. I guess I just liked the Twin Snakes design (sans mullet) more.

Super Smash Bros. was easier to pick up and play, but Melee was just a better game. The original was basically a beat-em-up while Melee required strategy.

As Amodaus1 suggested, Melee allows for simplicity; it simply has more depth than its predecessor. It succeeded in being easy to play and difficult to master.  It's a delicate balance. Smash is one of those series that needs some level of complexity. If it's too simple, why bother?

(Which gets rid of characters like Cloud and Tidus, THANK GOD)

Chain of Memories.........

If it's any Square-Enix character, it'll be Cloud. He's basically their mascot. I'd take Cloud over FFXII's Vaan any day....

Anyways if their is online and Luigi has his own moves and isnt just a mario clone, my pants will be tight.

Luigi in Melee is leagues better than Mario. I know what you're saying though. I still have my fingers crossed for Vacuum Luigi.

I totally agree with Spak-Spang on Super Mario RPG. It was a good game, but personally, I thought Superstar Saga was better. Mallow and Geno have this ridiculous cult following. They weren't even that cool.......

Brawl needs a Belmont. Simon would be most likely, though Trevor and Richter were cooler. Ryu from Street Fighter would be awesome too even though translating his moves into the Smash control scheme would be weird (pressing B for a Hadoken instead of D, DF, F+Punch)

The N64 era was probably their biggest disaster. Funny thing about that is Nintendo was still profitable.

Not that it needs to be said, but this time 5 years ago, you could walk into any number of stores and buy a Gamecube. Ask for a Wii at any retailer and you'll get looks of anger.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Walmart screwed me over
« on: November 19, 2006, 03:22:24 AM »
The Walmart near me had a raffle for who got one of their 36 units. It was also the most poorly planned raffle of all time. They gave out tickets to 500 of the something like 2000 people there. It was supposed to be 1 per family but they made no attempt at checking ID or anything so the 1st 500 people got tickets regardless. Then, they just put the tickets in a bucket a then picked numbers. The numbers were from 500-1000 and most picked were in the 900 range. If you were at the end of the line, you had a higher chance of getting one.

I'm not bitter as I didn't really want one, I was trying to increase the chances of a friend getting one, a plan which failed. A lot of people were pissed. There should have been priority to the people who have been waiting there all day. 500 tickets was just excessive.

Yesterday:

I went to my local EB Games to see if the Wii was there and it was except there were no controllers so I was looking at it in awe of how small it was. As I was checking it out from every angle someone asked me if I wanted to play it. This lady told me to ask the clerks for a controller and that I needed an ID. Here's the best part, she was like, "I work for Microsoft and I'm telling you this." Lo and behold he name tag had a Microsoft logo. I'm guessing she was the region representative. She said Wii was "a lot of fun."

So anyway, I got my hands on Excite Truck.

1. It's fast.
2. It's fun, even though I had trouble adjusting to the controls.
3. It's ugly. The textures were like a small step above Super Mario Sunshine.

I kept crashing and losing my rank, but I honestly didn't care. It was just so much fun that I'd often catch myself with a goofy smile on my face as if I'd never played a videogame before. Even though the graphics looked terrible, it really didn't matter, though I blame Resident Evil 4. Nothing has really wowed me graphically since that game, even on 360.

In the middle of my Mii creation, this fat kid maybe 13 or 14 remarked that he "[didn't] even know what that thing (Wii) was." Then, he went over to the 360 and said "This is what I want." He was playing around and waving at the Xbox Live Vision Camera. I was moving a controller in the air and having all kinds of fun and he's amazed at a camera. That killed me. Oh well, his loss.

Today:

I took my brother and girlfriend to play it. They enjoyed it. My brother started to get used to the game after the second race, but says he stills prefers standard controllers. My girlfriend really got into it. She also doesn't play videogames. She was moving around and yelling the f-word when she crashed into trees. She kept asking me if we could get it, but I kept telling her I was waiting until next year.

The controller is attracting new gamers. I can't speak for everyone, but here's a story of one convert. I'm confident my mom will love it when she tries it.

1. Getting the Master Sword for the first time in A Link to the Past.
2. Getting the fake Master Sword in A Link to the Past and a thief running into me and stealing my Rupees
3. Ganondorf pimp-slapping Zelda in Wind Waker.
4. The cut-scene with Saria before entering Hyrule Field.
5. Laughing at the crappy "Shiek is Zelda in disguise" plot twist. How could that have tricked anyone?
6. Realizing that there's a switch in the Forest Temple that I can shoot to twist the hallway.
7. Beating the final boss of Link's Awakening with half a heart left by timing the swinging arms because I didn't know you could use Roc's Feather to dodge attacks.
8. When Papahl in Link's Awakening, tells you that he'll be lost in the mountains later in the game.
9. How most of the characters in Link's Awakening broke the fourth wall then commented on how they didn't know why they knew what they were telling you.
10. Link sleeping in Rosetown in Super Mario RPG.

No way. EGM seems to hate Nintendo consoles, but they love Nintendo games. I'd say when it comes to Nintendo software, they're horribly biased. I love Nintendo titles, but EGM often seems to cut Nintendo games slack when reviewing them.

10161
When my mom bought the SNES some 15 years ago, she said she got it because it was $179.99 and it came with 2 controllers (for me and my sister) and Super Mario World. Games are important, but it's always been about value. That's consumerism. People want the most band for their buck. For example, Twilight Princess is destined to be a great game, but most people wouldn't pay $90 USD for it.

10162
I, too, like the drinking problem analogy. I think Nintendo has learned some valuable lessons and presented solutions though those solutions may not have been the best by any means.

We may not know the true potential of Wii's graphics capabilities. I'm no graphics whore, but it does seem like Nintendo undercut their technology. So Nintendo plays the graphics games, loses to graphically inferior PS2, then decides that gamers don't want graphics. Lesson learned? Not quite. The lesson here is that people don't want impressive graphics only. Passing on high-def is one thing, making Wii supposedly "twice as powerful as Gamecube" is an extreme alternative. It's not like standard televisions can't handle more. So what has Nintendo actually learned? Not much, but hey, they're trying something different and deserve points for that.

I know bringing up the graphics debate is like beating a dead horse, but it's really the easiest example. Nintendo is a company that continually says that the gaming industry is getting stale, but its biggest titles this generation were sequels, some weren't necessarily better than its predecessors depending on how you look at it. Would you consider Wind Waker a better game than Ocarina of Time or simply different? Was it really all that innovative? Slap Twilight Princess-esque graphics onto it and it seems like Ocarina of Time with a huge, annoying sea. My point is that there are several examples of Nintendo offering new solutions, but many of them are less than perfect. It really comes down to whether Nintendo finally found a formula that consumers, developers and themselves can accept.

And $250 isn't a terrible price. Wii is an extremely attractive console and people seem more than willing to pay the price. I might wish there was an extra controller (at least another freehand controller), but I'm buying one regardless albeit next year. If Prime 3 was available like it was supposed to, I would be standing in line on November 19.

I think we can expect more support from those developers. Wii just keeps getting more and more buzz all over the world. In Japan, especially, Wii is set to revive Nintendo's place in the console market. They've yet to make a completely terrible decision. The controller price issue sucks for consumers, but all indications point to people paying it simply because Wii is such an attractive console. I will begrudgingly throw $60 down for extra controllers. I may not like it, but I know I'll do it in a heartbeat. The controller price was Nintendo's only real mistake and it's kind of a non-issue. So, all things considered, I don't think we have to worry about 3rd party support at all. If Sony continues to f up, developers will turn to Wii without even giving 360 a second... or even a thought. But, I think we'll see more support anyway because it has so much potential and it's bound to be popular.

I don't get this "catch up to Sony" thing. Nintendo is set to close the gap with 360 this year while Sony limps through Christmas. I know this sounds like mindless fanboy drivel, but I can't really see it any other way. I'm a Nintendo fan, but I'm highly critical of them. Despite some questionable decisions and setbacks, they've done an amazing job of making Wii a very attractive platform.

Wii just needs a steady stream of quality titles and it'll do far better than Gamecube and maybe N64. Coming out on top is far trickier and would require no less than a miracle.

There are really only three Cube games that I expected great things from that kind of let me down: Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, and Mario Kart.

Those games let me down too for different reasons. Sunshine was just Mario 64 with a waterpack and an even wonkier camera. Wind Waker was like 70% sailing and the music aspect made the game even slower than it already was. Double Dash was just a sub-par game with some of the cheapest AI in any videogame. I don't think the MK formula is used up. Racing is still a viable genre. The developers of MK just rely too heavily on old ideas. The 2 kart thing didn't really change the game that much. Changing from paratroopa to Daisy didn't stop a purple shell from annihilating you then Bowser running over you right after recovering from the purple shell.

I think Nintendo finally figured out that they need both. Ocarina of Time was great, but 2 games of the same quality is always better.

I thought Nintendo said that there are already more dungeons than Ocarina of Time. I hope extra playtime is made up of actual gameplay. No backtracking like for artifacts like in the original Metroid Prime or trade quests and seach for the Triforce pieces like in Wind Waker.

70 hours is probably bull. OoT took me roughly 40 because I got lost in the Forest Temple for longer than i ever should have. The only game that took me 70 hours was FFVII and that's because I went through all the trouble of getting Knights of the Round which ironically I didn't even need because all the work that went into getting that Materia made me more than powerful enough to obliterate Safer Sephiroth. In Twilight Princess, I'm hoping for side dungeons with hidden bosses, something that will keep my interest.

Banjo's design sucked before. It still sucks. Meh, Banjo-Kazooie wasn't even that fun of a game anyway. It relied a lot on collecting which I despise in games. Rare's titles basically pwn3d Nintendo's in the graphics department, other than that Nintendo's were just plain better in every way. I don't really miss Rare because I never got into their titles.

Anyway, the X06 announcements don't really rock the gaming world. Losing Splinter Cell hardly affects Sony when they have like everything else despite seemingly f-ing up everything they possibly could with PS3. Nintendo is doing their own thing which is good for them because they likely wouldn't have gotten any of those titles anyway had they just developed a High-def machine with standard controls. They're getting their own exclusives, albeit less in number , but they're getting them nonetheless.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What's next after Wii?
« on: September 28, 2006, 09:48:33 AM »
I envision graphics slightly better than PS3 with the ease of Wii development and more internal flash memory. I'd love to see wireless headsets and a movie player. That's it though. I'd never want a home entertainment center. Just when I'm tired of playing games, I can relax by watching a movie.

The controller will evolve, but won't be a radical change. Perhaps more face buttons. The ease of use is established with Wii so another button or so won't be threatening to the user who got into games with Wii. Many regular remotes have dozens of buttons, having 4 buttons instead of 1 big A button shouldn't be too complicated. The analog stick will likely have rumble though I'd love to see forced feedback in both pieces. Not simply rumble. I mean, the controller pushes against you. Say when fishing in Zelda, you pull the freehand controller back and the controller feels like its pushing forward. Who knows what else they're planning though? Nintendo has brought things to gaming that no one ever even thought of a couple years ago.

I don't think Nintendo will have to worry about Sony and MS stealing their ideas. Based on history, they simply look to copy Nintendo while Nintendo works on new things. The way i see it, Nintendo always seems ahead of the game in terms of innovation (barring online multiplayer), especially controller innovation, so they'll likely have something that Sony and MS don't next generation.

10171
Um, no. That's a major glitch and one's that is immediately noticable seeing as the entire point of the game is to stay on the platform while trying to knock others off both of which revolve around jumping back onto said platform for survival.

Regardless, that's not even the point at all. Nintendo lied about the next Smash being available for launch, whether one sees it as Brawl or online Melee. Announcing a game's release, at the very least, suggests it's actually in development. Technically, there was no "delay" since the game was never going to make launch in the first place. The problem is that Nintendo is earning a reputation of straight up lying and Brawl is but one example of this. DVD playback? Not that I'm dying inside; it just stings a bit more that it was promised then quietly taken away.

You may snap if you want to, now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
« on: September 25, 2006, 12:00:03 PM »
I hope this game is more than just killing top assassins. Mowing through enemies gets old after awhile.

10173
Delays are fine. An unfinished game should never be rushed to market. Some games show more than others. Super Smash Bros Melee's magnetism ledge grab is evidence enough that the game could have used a few more weeks of tweaking.

My problem is when Nintendo flat-out lies about game releases when they know there's absolutely no way a game will be finished in time. Metroid Prime 3 is debatable. I think the game would have been finished by November, but Retro is adding online multiplayer. Super Smash Bros Brawl, on the other hand, didn't even have a development team until late last year. The average game takes roughly 18 months to develop. Even if you want to believe that the Smash was supposedly Melee with online multiplayer (before Masahiro Sakurai was asked to helm Brawl), it wouldn't have made launch anyway because there are no Nintendo WiFi games for Wii this year.

And I'd say Dreamcast had the best launch, even if it didn't take long for the game to fizzle out after that.

10174
As great as Melee was, it was rushed. Still, it was damn amazing for a rushed game. The difference with Brawl is that it was promised as a launch game at E3 '05. I wouldn't be so disappointed in the delay if I knew it was coming out in 2007 all along.

Like I said, complete and utter lies. For all the planning and secrecy Nintendo has been known for, why can't they settle a damn release date for any of their titles? Don't tell me Prime 3 isn't making launch, then it is, then it's suddenly not. What the hell is that?

10175
5. Everything associated with the name - "Yeah, we finalized the name 6 months ago." - everyone at Nintendo 2 weeks prior to E3. Seriously, what was the point of that? Nintendo constantly reaffirmed that Revolution was subject to change and we can probably all agree that Wii was a step back (though I think the whole controversy was overblown; it's just a name), but why all the secrecy? Sony can't steal the console name. Also, the so-called philosophy behind the name and the little video was utter bull. "Wii as in We." Yeah, shut up and thanks for the ONE controller in the console package.

4. Release date - Should be in October or at the very least before PS3.

3. No WiFi until next year - it's free................ but wait until next year. It kind of sucks that we know next to nothing about their online structure outside of the Wii channels too. Friend lists? Rankings? Come on, Nintendo.

2. Complete and utter lies - No DVD playback. Smash Bros. sequel at launch. Metroid Prime 3 at launch. I'm sure there are more.

1. Controller woes - The price = outrageous. No rumble in the analog stick attachment yet it still costs $20 even though it's pointless without the freehand controller. Almost no info on the classic controller which isn't a shell at all. Compatibility between classic controller and GCN controller. From what I've gathered, GCN controllers can be used in Wii games supposedly (no concrete info, just a passing comment from Masahiro Sakurai), but the classic controller can't be used for GCN games. Why don't we know?
