Netflix Coming to 3DS Tomorrow
« on: July 13, 2011, 05:50:13 PM »

The Netflix application will be added to the eShop as part of the weekly Nintendo Downloads.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/27172

The 3DS will be able to stream Netflix Instant starting this Thursday, July 14.

Users will be able to download the free Netflix application from the eShop, which is being released as part of the weekly Nintendo Downloads. Netflix streaming subscribers will be able to access video content from the 3DS using a broadband connection.

Viewers will be able to pause videos on their 3DS and resume them on other Netflix enabled devices. All videos will be in 2D.

Nintendo announced that Netflix was coming to the 3DS during GDC keynote presentation, back in March. Nintendo also announced the Nintendo Video service, which will host 2D and 3D content curated by Nintendo, as part of the same presentation. That service launched in Europe and Japan this week, but will not launch in North America until later this summer.

Subscribers can already stream Netflix Instant on many devices, including Wii.

"All videos will be in 2D."

I hope that is implied to be "for now".
No reason they shouldn't be ready to launch a 3D service in 2012.
There are plenty of movies out that support 3D right now, and even more by the time 2012 hits.

This *barely* soothes the pain from the Netflix price hike yesterday.

Well, I am sure they will if Netflix ever adds 3D movies to their service.

I was talking about Netflix.

There is no reason that Netflix shouldn't be adding a 3D service by 2012 since there are already plenty of 3D movies available and since just about every big release has a 3D version now adays, there will be much more by the time 2012 hits.

for me it really doesn't do any soothing for the price hike, apparently I don't need DVD's from Netflix anymore. the low price was one of the reasons that I stuck with it to begin with and now that it's coming to 3DS I definitely wanna stick with it.. but I guess now I have to wonder for how long..

on a happier note: I can't believe this is finally coming out!! I read things wrong to begin with and thought that we would have it by E3 but when that didn't happen I was afraid we would have to wait until at least the end of the year.. this is pretty awesome :-D
At some point, I'd think Nintendo fans would get sick of the anticipation and just say "screw it," but Nintendophiles are odd, odd creatures indeed.<BR>—Chris Carle, IGN

It's the opposite for me. This is what will make the hike worth the value. This may also be the straw that breaks the camel's back and convinces me to throw down on a 3DS. Sad that it's not a game, but this feature along with AR games Street Pass and VC stuff will really hold me over until something great gets released.

I honestly don't care that much. I can already stream Netflix on my laptop, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPod Touch, and iPad. So I don't really get much out of this. Still, I will download the App anyways and I am glad others will get use out of it.

This is pretty sweet. I too wasn't expecting this till the end of summer. I do hope they have a healthy amount of 3D movies (crossing my fingers for trailers). I can't afford a TV that's 3D capable and I really don't want to buy the glasses.

Since this uses an Internet connection then that means I could use it only at home, where I can already stream it to my television.

My daughter just asked me right now "Daddy, why did you raise both your arms up as if you won something right now?"

I too was waiting for this, I am thrilled.  I was pretty upset about the price hike yesterday, especially since I've been subscribing to Netflix since 2001.  Seriously.

And why is this better, you may ask?  Netflix on the 3DS is perfect for watching while exercising, simply because you can tilt the darn screen to match your height.  You don't know how sick and tired I was of building a little ramp with a combination of my keys, phone, and membership card in order to tilt my iphone so I could get a good viewing angle on the elliptical.

Price hike? My monthly fee was lowered. I don't have to support everyone streaming stuff anymore. Now I can have my DVDs and be happy. :P

Existing customers should have been grandfatehred in. My price has been hiked twice now to the point that I've had to downgrade my service once already and maybe again when this one takes effect.

When I heard Netflix was gonna be coming out for the 3DS I was GONNA get it, but wih this price hike, forget it! I live on my own and money would've been tight enough with the current price. But now, (for me), it's nkt gonna happen now.

My brother and I have been using Netflix for the last two months.  He used his month free trial and now I'm using mine.  I really like the convenience of just loading up my Wii and watching a film whenever I want.

There is just one huge problem.  Due to licencing restrictions the selection in Canada absolutely sucks balls!  So I sure can't imagine paying for it.  And the worse thing is that the search results bring up ALL the titles available for the service but say "Not Available" if it isn't available in Canada.  So I'm constantly teased about what I COULD watch if I lived like 10 miles south of where I am now.  And video rental stores have all but disappeared, having replaced their, you know, rental selection with DVDs and Blu Rays for sale and unrelated stuff like cell phones, if they're even in business at all.  So there are essentially no more video stores and Netflix is borderline useless in Canada so it looks like for the next few years if I want to see a movie I either have to see it in theatre or buy it outright.  The old past time of renting a movie has more or less disappeared for me.

Hypothetically if Netflix in Canada is no good the video stores should be able to continue to be successful without the competition.  But that doesn't work when all your video store chains are from American companies.  D'oh!

What I heard was you need 11 miles of Networking done. :P  Stinks about the Canadian licensing.  I know streaming here doesn't have everything I want so I have to get DVD.

They do that here too. If you search for a title on any streaming device, the search will bring up all titles on Netflix and not just titles you can stream. A little annoying.

The Netflix 3DS app is available now, and I had a chance to try it out.

Once launched, you're asked to activate your 3DS via code with your computer (but from what I hear you can also do it via the 3DS web browser at http://netflix.com/nintendo3ds and logging in, but I haven't tried it myself). Once activated, you're brought to a Wii-like menu system. From my experience with the Wii app, the 3DS version is slow in comparison. Tried out Iron Man 2, but it wouldn't load. Had to do a hard reset because nothing else worked. Not even the Home button worked. It appeared that others I've talked with who tried it were having similar problems. After rebooting my 3DS and relaunching the app, the interface seemed to run a bit faster (but still not as fast as the Wii version). Iron Man 2 loaded, though initial buffering wasn't as fast.

Playback of the movie was surprisingly smooth. A little bit lower quality, but it is not such that it's a problem. Volume is decent (when compared to the downloadable trailers from the eShop). They do plan on adding support for 3D movies in the future, so I could at least assume that based on that, 2D movie quality could be improved, as 3D movies are kinda like 2 2D video streams running together.

Overall, it's a good app. I did forget to mention that my Wii is connected online via network cable rather than WiFi, so that could explain why the 3DS version feels slow to me. Perhaps they could improve on that as well.

The interface has a bit of 3D to it (nice touch), so I'd say 3D video is all but assured. Is the audio only in mono? I've only watched an episode of MythBusters so far, but given thatthe DS has stereo speakers, you'd think it'd have stereo (maybe this is common to Netflix on mobile devices).

I probably won't use it too much (maybe on the road or on an airplane or something), but it's nice to have.

It might be kind of difficult to do on the road unless you have a mobile wi-fi hot spot with you since the 3DS uses wi-fi only to connect online.

As for the audio, I wish I could comment. I haven't used the Netflix App on my 3DS yet, but I did download it and set it up.
