TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Announces Metroid Prime Trilogy
« on: May 30, 2009, 11:57:13 PM »
I was reading TYP's comments on the Japanese Wii-make of MP1: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=27441.0

It sounds to me as if it gives you two difficulty options when you first begin, Normal and Veteran.  In the original MP1, you couldn't choose, it was just "normal", and then you unlocked Hard after beating the game.  In MP3, you start with Normal and Veteran available, and can unlock Hyper difficulty.  I'm wondering if Wii-made MP1 Veteran corresponds to original MP1 "normal", and if you can unlock something that corresponds to original MP1 Hard.  MP3's Normal was ridiculously easy, which would be great news to my girlfriend.  She enjoyed Zero Mission on Easy difficulty and seems interested in the Primes, but, well, they're pretty tough.

EDIT: Screenshot at Nintendo's official site: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/7y8SXfbq4nlR_ZO15BY3yHdKL7erLAnk#images

I think (hope?) this confirms my suspicions, since the three circles on the left of each save file are the same as the ones in MP3.

You are incorrect, sir.  Your n! in the denominator should be a k!.

I loved game 3!  I used to play tons of that game, and I recognized the music but couldn't figure it out until the third song.  The hint question made me suspicious, and the song confirmed it.  I had a Four Score, of course.  :)

Cruis'n USA was great fun in the Arcade... in 1994.  The N64 port was pretty bad, though.

I think what's really said is that Cruis'n Wii looks pretty much the same as the original did, 14 years ago.  How far we have come...

Online Bomberman + 8 players + Mii heads = win.  Also, I've always wanted to play co-operative Tetris, and 6-way vs. sounds good too.

I have to say I'm disappointed that the entire game is only 5 minutes long, with apparently 2 stages.  I thought Ikaruga was really short with only 5 levels, but it was half an hour and had a lot more depth to the gameplay.  I was really excited when I saw the first videos of this game last week, but I didn't realize that I was watching the entire game.

Excellent picks for game 5.  I thought it was SMG just based on the instruments from the first song, and I was hoping that if I was right, I'd get to hear song 2.  :)  And of course, no selection from this game is complete without song 3.  It really embodies the mood Nintendo wants you to be in while playing the game.

Anyone who took more than three notes to get game 1 should be handcuffed to a chair and forced to play N64 for the next year straight.  :)

EDIT: I don't have any problems with the mics in this recording, in fact, I don't hear any mains hum cutting in and out, which always bothers me in many of the podcast recordings.  Thumbs-up.  :)

For game 3, I recognized the trumpets and strings from that game, but I wasn't 100% sure until the question.  It's strange how none of the game's musical themes stand out for me, but the instrument waveforms do.

Excellent music selection from game 3, especially the last song.  Back when I actually played this game, I had to hear the music from my crappy mono TV speaker.  It was awesome to listen to it coming out of a 5.1 system, I had no idea the N64 was so capable.  :)

You got me with Game 5.  I recognized the tracks as Link to the Past, but I also realized the instument samples weren't the same.  My guess was that it was the LttP + Four Swords combo for the GBA.  Almost.    Makes me sad, because I don't own the game that I thought it was, but I own the game it actually was.  That game is an absolute BLAST, btw.

I got Game 3 in 2 notes, though.

Game 3 was sweet.  It's a really hard game, too, on the same order of magnitude as Battletoads.

I wouldn't mind hearing from the person who chooses Game 3 on the podcast.  That would be kinda neat, having a different guest player each week.  Assuming their schedule and internet connection allow, of course.

This game is $40?  Nevermind then...

Does anyone know if Baseball Stars 2 is any good?  I loved the first game for the NES, one of the better baseball games out there, and really in depth in terms of team management and league play.

Good game 3 choice, especially the second song.  I recognized it right away on the first song and was hoping you would include that second one.

Loved the first game, it took me all three songs to guess it, but I had a suspicion on the second song.  Those low moving chords at the beginning were very familiar sounding, and the drums finally gave it away.  I love NES music, it's always amazing what composers were able to do with just a few square and triangle waves and a noise channel.

My whammy bar is crap, too.  It falls down all the time, causing me to search for it during play and miss notes, and even the springing action feels a bit off.

The rest of the guitar is absolutely awesome.  I love the solid materials they used, the easier to use fret buttons and strum bar, and the heavier weight (doesn't move around as much when you're strumming away like crazy).  Even the tilt sensing in the Wii Remote is far more accurate than in the Gibson SG controllers for GH1/2.

I have to agree with you on value.  The guitar is more solidly built than the SG, but given that wireless and tilt sensing are included in the Wii Remote, the $90 price tag on this game is a turn-off.  Not enough of one to prevent me from buying it, though.  Guitar Hero is like crack -- they get you hooked, then they raise the price when you want more.

That's strange.  I can't say I've experienced the "phantom strum" after having completed the game on Hard and completed all but two songs on Expert.

I, too, am an audiophile who didn't notice that the game was outputting mono sound until I read about it.  I even have a 5.1 system and the only sound was coming out of the center speaker.  Putting my receiver in "music" decoding mode got sound out of the left and right speakers as well, and it does sound better, but it's funny I didn't notice after several hours of play.

I think a big reason that long sequences of rapid notes are easier to hit is because the strum bar is easier to use.  It has slightly less travel distance and requires slightly less pressure than the Gibson SG controller from GH1/2 for the PS2.  Also, I think rapid hammer-ons are easier to hit due to the fret buttons also having less travel distance and requiring less pressure.  Both the fret buttons and the strum bar still have good tactile feedback, so nothing was sacrificed in that regard, it's just much easier to play.  I absolutely love the Les Paul controller, even though my whammy bar keeps falling down out of reach.

Now if I could just finish Raining Blood on Expert.

Graphics-wise, I like what they've done with the note chart and the amp/multiplier.  It's all good, clean, and easy to see.  I really like hammer-ons being brighter than in GH1/2, especially since any note can now be a hammer-on (and some rapid notes can be non-hammer-on).  I have to say though that the venues, and ESPECIALLY the characters, look like crap.  You don't notice this at all when you're playing, so it's not that big a deal, but when watching my girlfriend play, I thought wow, we're back to animations that look like they're from 1999.  Again, this doesn't really detract from the gameplay.  Several other niggling issues with the menus in the game, the co-op play, and the mono sound make me think that either the development budget for this game was as low as possible, or they rushed to finish it in time for the holiday season.  It's probably the latter, since the most important aspects of the game really do shine.

I think Harmonix/RedOctane/whoever owns the GH1&2 rights would be completely stupid not to bring a Guitar Hero 1&2 compilation to the Wii.  It would sell like hotcakes.  That being said, I don't have high hopes for it happening.

As for GH3, the Les Paul guitar is freaking awesome.  This thing completely destroys the SG or the Explorer in terms of playability and comfort.

And that's no guarantee it will appear, either.

It's pretty clear from that statement that they would like to release DLC for the Wii version.

Dunno. Since there's no downloadable content available for the Wii version then a port would be the only way to get your hands on the older songs (unless they are already included with #3).

I don't see why downloadable content couldn't be released in the future on WiiWare.  To date the only announcement regarding DLC in GH3 on the Wii has been "it won't have downloadable content initially."

It does look slightly slower to me, and other videos have, too.  I like the new speed, I think Melee was just a hair on the fast side.

Of course, watching a game is a lot different from playing it.

Dude, I am rocking out to Game 5 Song 3.  LOL.  Crazy.

Excellent picks this week, this was the first time I guessed games correctly, but not on the first song from those games.  And on MULTIPLE games from this week, too.
