You don't have to show graphic violence to not pull punches.  That is why I mentioned the Dark Knight series.  They edited and cut that film so tight, that you felt every punch and act of violence (Like the Joker Magic Trick) without having to show it.

Or another example, the Dare Devil hallway fight scene was brutal, but not very bloody.  You felt the battle without having to be disgusted with gore.  The netflix shows I believe made a miscalculation.  They could have shown almost every scene in Daredevil Season 1 and Jessica Jones season 2 without pushing the Gore factor.

Yes and no, when Joker is holding Michael Jae Whites character and he does his whole spiel about how he got his scars they failed at the execution. I always thought the scene was off. Overall, a good scene, but they my have made it work a little if they had done another take.

Fake gore doesn't bother me. They used to have an abundance of surgery shows that used to make me ill.

That might make my point hopefully.

The point isn't that all gore and violence is bad.  Or that there isn't a place for it.

The point I was making is it was unfortunate that they decided with some extremely popular characters to go for light R rated material keeping many fans from being able to enjoy Marvel Characters, that they should be able to enjoy.

Your example is a good point.  Personally, both gore and medical dramas that are graphic are hard to watch...and personally medical dramas are harder for me to watch too.  But, I still don't want to celebrate graphic violence on people.  There is a point where you as a film maker can caught away.

Another example is the punch on Luke Cage's face in all the trailers.  You can start to show the hand breaking and cut to him in pain holding his hands without showing all the bones break or pop out of place.

But, I also know it is my opinion, and others can have there own.

There is movie out called "The Green Room" that, apart from being excellent, uses gore to show how psychotic these people are. It adds to the drama because it is difficult to imagine someone doing that, or seeing someone do that to someone else, let alone someone you care about. It makes fear palpable. It's meant to be hard to watch.

Interesting. I thought that scene worked because of the music that ramps up the tension very gradually (and repeated later on to set an expectation).

Did they not include a picture of the actor in that article? Did anyone else find that annoying?

Calling it right now.  If they are not careful just having a character called Man Ape might get this movie labeled racist.

I'm watching episode 4 as we speak. The music choices (and some of the set designs) are fantastic. It's shamelessly black and proud about it.

I just finished episode 6... neglecting all the things I was supposed to be doing so far today.

I need to walk away. save the rest for tomorrow night.

question though. Who was rapping at the beginning of ep5, and who was the chick that lost the ring in ep5?

I'll just say so far, that even though this is a little slow at times, it's still paced well and never becomes boring. at least up through ep 6.

Goddamn, "Luke Cage" is so good. I'll post more in depth impressions once I'm finished (currently on episode 6). For now, it's better than "Jessica Jones" but not better than either season of "Daredevil" (outside of music). To me, "Daredevil" is the gold standard for comic book shows.

On a side note, while I don't use a particular word that begins with the letter N, I'm weirdly relieved Marvel didn't censor or force Cheo Hodari Coker to compromise his vision and a superhero so deeply rooted in Harlem. That's how people speak and it would have felt inauthentic if the writers and actors danced around the word. "I don't even like these n****s, man." Unlike "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage" has more lighter moments.

It's also weird that Marvel's Netflix shows have better villains than most of the movies. Mahershala Ali is fucking killing it as Cornell Stokes/Cottonmouth in this show. His villain laugh is so deliciously arrogant and condescending. I only knew Ali from "House of Cards" in which he plays like the exact opposite kind of character. That's some damn good acting, man.

I'm currently at the beginning of ep 12, and as soon as I get back from a quick errand that needs to be run, I will finally have time to sit down and start this show.
