Tapping the toys to the Wii U GamePad will let you sample some Nintendo classics.

Later this year, Wii U owners will be able to unlock time-limited trial versions of various Nintendo and Super Nintendo games by tapping their Amiibo to the GamePad.

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata made the announcement during tonight's financial meeting, noting that tapping the same Amiibo multiple times will allow you to select between various scenes within a particular game. The feeling of doing so is apparently akin to that of changing cartridges.

Support for this functionality is planned to go live within the first half of this year.

Now this is a cool use of amiibo. Hopefully they will release additional VC titles because of this. Can easily boost sales of VC titles.

It figures that the only interest Nintendo has in Virtual Console these days is through ****ing Amiibos.  ::)

Not Earth-shattering, but definitely a step in the right direction which will hopefully sate some of the "Amiibo don't DO anything" crowd... I'm a fan of Amiibo, so I'll probably get some use out of this.

I think this is pretty cool.


One potential downside: I can't help but wonder if most serious collectors (ie: people putting in the time/effort to get Amiibo figures) won't already own the full games... making trial versions kind of useless?

I agree with Darth Caedus, "not earth shattering, but a step in the right direction ". But I still feel more should be done with these, (I'm sure there will be, but they've gotta do more than just this. Just have to wait and see I guess).

For ejamer, I believe the situation could be something akin to an NES Remix-esque function. Drop players into an iconic moment of the game, such as vs. Ridley from Super Metroid, only give them a healthy amount of Super Missiles and Energy Tanks. Or throw you into a particularly challenging platforming section of Yoshi's Island.

That's how I would like to see this idea implemented, anyway. There is a potential failure in this, which would be "Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus, and that's it". And that the selection of sequences is bullshit like world 1-1 from SMB, which every self-respecting gamer has played, or giving Luigi and Bowser the same scenes as Mario. However, I would like to see them do something with more recent Amiibo characters like Shulk, Robin, and Olimar. We'll have to wait and see what the extent of this service is, though. But hey, more cool **** for Amiibo collectors.

This is Iwata's ship. Each amiibo will just give you access to a different phase in Balloon Fight. There's ALWAYS another way for them to get us to play ******* Balloon Fight.  :D

I actually stopped playing NES Remix because of the Balloon Fight levels. Its just a cheap Joust Knock off and not done very well at all.


So Wii U is bombing but with Amiibo Nintendo was able to turn a profit and the Wii U is not dead champions come back and pretend their dud is actually doing okay. Instead of getting more games for people to buy they just find yet another way to milk the shrinking fanbase for even more pennies.

They're profitable, which means they'll live to fight another console cydle. If they can learn a few things from their competitiomn mwybe come up with a few of their owm, they could be very successful

My only problem is that you are on the clock or "job" of Community Manager and being drunk while working seems like a pretty big no-no to me. At least I know what I can tell NWR it needs to do to improve itself which is make me director of the site stricter hiring practices and background checks.

hey for once a thread was derailed and I had nothing to do with it. Can we turn this back into how Game Cube was the best thing ever and Wii U is still a joke, and not a good one at that. Or what is the actual topic again just general bitching about nothing, cuz I think as a community we got that done.
