And when the auction ends and the seller fails to send the game (as all the evidence shows that no such game actually exists), he will be in big trouble.

I'd say it's viral marketing.  There never was the game, but they're making one now, it'll be on VC soon.

There's no way it would be $5, though, so I don't think this really means anything.

SUPPOSEDLY these are screenshots.

Still not buying it, but Vic Ireland has yet to debunk it.  Maybe it's like Dark Void Zero and they're giving it a fictional backstory.

I'd have to say given the press release, the screenshots, and the lack of an official retraction or clarification that it's either real or viral marketing, and either way, some Blaster Master title will be released on the 26th.

Given they included stock information in the press release, and had no obvious hints at a joke, it's possible this would present some sort of stock fraud if there weren't some kind of product going on sale, really.

I did a bit of checking... the seller appears to be Tom Bombaci, who is an actual long-time arcade collector.  However, he seems to be faking everyone out, pretending that it's somebody else.

eBay auction is now up for the item.

http://cgi.ebay.com/RAREST-PlayChoice-10-cart_W0QQitemZ200456675511QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2eac2620b7

Auction ended about 15 minutes ago. It was at 17 bids and over $12k.
Is there anyway to know who won the bid now that it's over and how much it closed for?

I'm betting that if Sunsoft listed the item, they also placed the winning bid then mutually backed out so that there are no negative marks or unsatisfied customers.

Read what MegaByte posted and you'd see there's fishy stuff going on.

At this point, I'd say there's still two possibilities:  Either this is all viral marketing for a new Blaster Master title, potentially a retro one, or it's viral marketing for the original found game.  Either way, the eBay auction clearly isn't coincidental, and is meant to drive up buzz about whatever Sunsoft has coming up.  Considering the press release, I'd say there has to be something on the way, likely for the 4/26/10 date, like Sunsoft said, or they'd probably be in legal trouble, as well.

So, I'd say either Sunsoft made the game in the past year, they found it, or they always had it unreleased, a la EarthBound 0, and given the success of Blaster Master on the Wii and in general, they figured they'd release it.  To drive up buzz, they made the announcement on April 1st, then had an unbelievable auction go up simultaneously, after some negotiations with a relatively known arcade collector.  All these things together scream April Fools joke or viral marketing, two things that can go hand in hand.  Considering the possible legal issues of making an announcement about an item that doesn't exist, the game was announced today as part of the viral marketing, rather than as a joke.

So essentially, I think something is happening with Blaster Master, and it's happening soon, but there's no real way to tell what it will be, at least not yet.

It would be amazing if they made the game recently, but made real ROMs for it rather than simulating the NES like Mega Man 9/10.  This would allow it to work in emulators/Virtual Console and provide a ridiculous collectible.

Because you thought you had the scoop on a game 20 years before it could be made, but only 20 years after it was supposed to exist, it turned out to be a hoax.

Maybe, but nobody should believe any thing they hear or read on April 1 (it doesn't help that some REAL news stories have been reported on April 1 before).

NPR had me fooled for a couple seconds with a story about a small section of the healthcare bill changing every month to 28 days for budgetary reasons. It was very professional sounding and they had Paul Krugman on to talk about it and everything, and I was like WTF until I remembered what day it was. Never thought NPR would go that far for an April Fool's joke.

That makes it funny. It's like how in 1957 the BBC, a serious news outlet, had one of their most serious newscasters do a serious story (meaning they presented it the same way they did a real story) on their most serious news show about spaghetti trees in Switzerland. It was helped by the fact that spaghetti was not a very popular dish in the UK at the time. CNN actually considers it the biggest April Fools' joke by a reputable news organization, probably because of how many people actually fell for it.
