Title: What the Hell?
Post by: BranDonk Kong on August 04, 2011, 09:25:55 PM
Is it just me, or are the forums all thin and centered in the screen now? Maybe my kid was messing with my computer or something...but I don't like it. Maybe there are ads that I'm not seeing or something...

I thought it was just my computer, so I didn't say anything. I am having the same problem, it started like 20 minutes ago.

Yeah we got sexay new background wallpaper ads. I got league of legends.

The awesome thing about it is that they're distracting, but I don't see enough of them to actually know what they're advertising.

Who do we blame?

I like how the bottom pop up add blocks the banner ad behind it.

The Bottom one is super annoying and the side ones are just annoying.  I feel like I'm on a site trying to infect my computer with something.

I don't mind the side ones (suck it hippies!) But the bottom pop-up sucks eggs. What is this, IGN? If Neal would stop cruising around in his private NWR jet like a corporate fat cat, I wouldn't have to click close everytime I opened a new thread.

What is really a shame about it is that it removed the Babylon theme, which is the best theme. Now I have to go with the Core theme, which has a similar layout, but a worse colour scheme and larger text boxes and stuff. I hope that's just temporary...

Also, did I hear someone mention eggs?

Is it bad that I have no idea what any of you are talking about in this thread?
Title: Re: What the Hell?

Let me guess, you use the Core or Curve theme for the forum? I didn't use those for this reason, because I think they look ugly.
Title: Re: What the Hell?
Post by: Stratos on August 05, 2011, 04:27:59 AM
Wow. Are they trying to drive away their core members? I guess I can tolerate the side ones even though they scream IGN, but that bottom pop up one has to go. I've been a good user and not disabled ads because I want to support the site but I plan on getting any and all forms of ad-blocker if this doesn't get changed soon.

Now that I widened my window, I notice that there is a lot of unused grey space and the forum doesn't widen with the window borders.

Please fix this.

I woke back up just now and I don't like this. Please bring back the Babalon theme. Also these ads are annoying. I have to close them whenever I open up a new window. Even when posting something I get it.

Edit: I'm going to log off. I'll be back in the morning to see if this has been resolved.

Just saw the front page.
Congratulations!  I'm sure we are know going to see a Readership drop and I know I'm not coming to the site without full Ad-Blocking.

If you needed money so bad just put up a donate button.

Wow.  That's pretty awful.

You know, I didn't know there were ads on Youtube.  Really - like pre-play ads and pop-ups and stuff.  Was at a friends house and they showed me a Youtube video and there were all these ads.

I seriously don't understand how anyone can stand to be on the internet without some kind of adblocking software.  It'd be like watching TV without DVR...

I get this ugly black pop-up down the bottom of my screen everytime I load a page. I blocked the images that appeared on the side, but the pop-up re,ains without any image. How do I get rid of this?

You know what is funny. Even when you are logged out of your account you get this stuff. I haven't tested out the forum with the cpu yet. I'm on my Wii in my room now. I'm guessing this will be the same on the CPU. I use firefox on the cpu so I'll have to check out what is up with that.

This is pretty disappointing. I wonder if the ads are to just support hosting, or if a battle chest is being stored to pay for trips to shows like E3. If its to support hosting, then they are paying too much for it.

Thanks for the feedback!

We've got these ads up because, well, running this thing costs money. Ads bring in money. It's rather simple. No ads = no NWR.

It's unavoidable, and I'm sorry it's inconveniencing you.

I'm fine with the ads on the side and I'm fine with banner ads.  But that stupid flash ad at the bottom is unbearable.  Like as in "dealing with this for too long will discourage me from coming back to the site" unbearable.  EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PAGE I have to stop and close it.  It's an obtrusive pain in the ass and I suggest you get rid of it.  I will NEVER buy a product in a stupid flash ad that covers the screen so whoever is paying for that, you're wasting your money.

I just hunted down IE on my computer and loaded it up so I could see this ad invasion.

I don't get any on the sides, and the ones on top and bottom aren't that bad, but the pop-up one at the bottom is very very annoying.

NWR needs money, like most other sites, so they put up ads
People generally hate ads, not the ones specific to this site, but all over the internet in general, so they use adblockers
NWR realizes that lots of people are using adblockers, and not enough people are clicking ads, so they make more intrusive ads for those that aren't blocking the ads.
Those that weren't blocking ads before now start blocking ads
NWR makes even less ad money than they did before :( (but they had to try something right?)

It's a circle of irony.

But this distribution of ads is forcing all of us to block ads.

It also done in a way that is overly Pervasive which will drive down site traffic.
As Ian said.  The Back Banners ok but, the bottom flash one needs to go.  Not to mention the extra side one

Now:
---------------------Upper Ad|Content
Background Ad | Content | Side Ad | Background Ad
---------------------Lower Ad|Content
------------------Flash Pop-up Ad

Rather it be:
---------------------Upper Ad|Content
Background Ad | Content |Content | Background Ad
---------------------Lower Ad|Content

After some reflection, my initial feelings were of shock that something so obvious chaged. As regulars, if we would have been notified that changes were in the pipe, we probably wouldn't have reacted so negatively. Though the ad at the bottom is really a pain. I don't care about the ads at the sides, I put up with them at IGN, I can here too. I use the service, I can do what needs to be done to support the site.
I'd also support a 'Donate' button...

What about bringing back the Babylon theme? I don't see the ads anyways, so what annoys me is having everything squished into the center of the screen, about 40% of the screen is now gray space.

Think about it. NWR added ads that utilize the sides of the browser. Just like IGN. In order for those ads to be seen, the variable width design had to go.
Title: Re: What the Hell?
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on August 05, 2011, 04:58:55 PM
Funny thing is that the variable width is still present in my IE but not in Chrome.

So I'm not getting the bottom ad anymore and everything is fine.  The rest of it seems totally normal and I'm already used to it.  It was only the bottom ad I had a beef with.
Title: Re: What the Hell?

The bottom ad should only appear once every 24 hours (as opposed to every page like it was before). Once you close it, it won't bother you for another 24 hours.

As Aaron alluded, we're just testing it. We'll take into account your complaints about it when we determine whether or not we keep it.

We place ads because we love.

The ads are super annoying, but at least I don't have to see them. I installed ad free on my rooted Xoom (and Thunderbolt) so I don't see them on there either. Oh well, as long as they think we see them..

I don't see the ads on my iPad, but I frequently get this thin black bar that blocks out part of the screen with a "Click to Remove" line, it's about as tall as one line of text. It started with this forum change last night.

You should strongly consider donations and/or selling NWR-branded gear.

I will never click an ad because I will never see an ad.
I may buy an NWR item or make a free-will donation because I do like the site.

No I used the Opera browser on the Wii and I had the ads. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you will see it unless you have an adblocker.

I use Opera on my laptop, dude. Opera sucks on the Wii and DSi. Thank god they changed it for the 3DS. But yeah, the browser is COMPLETELY different on a computer.

Do you get revenue from just displaying the ads or does it require clicking on them?  If so then that's the donate button.  I'll pledge 3 clicks a day as long as you keep that bottom ad from returning.

I don't mind the side ads so much, but is there any reason so much of the screen has to go to them?  I'm on Firefox 4.0, and these frames seem to take up a good 2/5 to 1/2 of the screen.  It squashes the actual content down considerably.  Maybe the side ads could be trimmed down to maybe 3/4 of the size they are now?

I'll disable AdBlock for NWR if I can have the Babylon theme back.

That pop up banner has got to go. I prevents me from clicking on whatever is at the top of the page while  on my phone. I cannot goto the Nintendo Console Discussion section at all as there is a thin black line that goes across the entire top of the forum that has a close button that doesn't work. It won't go away and I can't click around it or close it.

We're looking into the black bar thing. Sorry about that.

Also, we're trying to strike a balance with the box ads.

I don't love ads that much either, guys, but they kind of make the site go 'round.
Title: Re: What the Hell?

Why not use a banner size rather than a box in the threads? Is the click through rate that much lower?

As far as being on mobile, the floating black bar only shows up in landscape mode.

If I hold my phone vertically, no black bar, all is fine except the print is really small and I have to scroll left and right.
So i hold it horizontally, and then the black bar shows up.... blocking me from usually reading/accessing the the first topic that isn't stickied.

Seriously on some computers I only have to close it once per day, but on my computer at home I am constantly having to close that damn ad at the bottom.  Is there some setting someone can tell me about so it can detect I've been advertized to already?  I've enabled cookies on this site and allowed pop ups and all that already and it hasn't worked.
