Is GAME the ONLY specialist game retailer in the UK?
The last major one left, yes.

Well, that's like saying that GameStop is the only one because they bought up all the other major chains. It's weird, MegaByte's right that if this was happening in America to GameStop, there'd be a significant portion of the traditionalist gamer segment that wouldn't shed a tear.

Game did actually buy up all of the other competitors so its the last national chain left really. The competition commission waived through their purchase of Gamestation as they said there's "sufficient competition via other means".
I wouldn't shed a tear if they died, but they are needed because of their niche.

GameStop is pretty much the only retailer that carries niche games (like most Atlus and NIS games, for example). So that would be a good reason.
My big Problem with Gamestop now is:
1) How they Train there People to be. 2) They have pretty much gotten rid of all the Specialty merchandise for gaming culture.
They use to have figures, cards, keychains, etc. A lot more then know though even then not a whole lot. They have cut back on that.

There will always be Amazon.com (.uk) or some other website. Its a brave new world.

If GameStop or Game were to die, some other store would rise up to take its place. It's a lot easier to emerge as a major player in a niche market when you don't have to compete with a company that's as entrenched and widespread as those are

agreed, we'd probably start seeing mom and pop game stores again until the cycle start all over again

Ironically, guess who wants to purchase Game now? GAMESTOP!
Although i think this is a good thing; we need to kill off all the unprofitable companies before the cycle can restart.

It'd be real tough for anyone to want to move in to a market where all the major players are going bankrupt.

That'd be 100% AWESOME.

This reminds me of the episode of South Park that made fun of Walmart. If GameStop goes down, another company will take its place and people will hate it, and keep repeating this cycle.

I'm a little disappointed with NWR's coverage NONE! on this.
When Game lost their credit insurance, Nintendo was the first to bail out refusing to stock them with The Last Story, Xenoblade, Mario Party 9, Street Fighter x Tekken and a handful others. ALL The Last Story preorders were cancelled 24 hours before release. Then EA got in on the act and refused to sell Mass Effect 3. That was about 3 weeks ago.
Now they have less than 2 weeks to pay creditors (including rent and staff bills!) before they go bust.
You'd think that on a nintendo website the largest games-only retailer in the UK being unable to stock nintendo products is news worthy.

LOL, I assume that was a mistake on your part since Nintendo has nothing to do with that game and it's not coming to a Nintendo system.
Well, they did mention the situation on RFN at least.

Game has, predictably, gone into administration (which is effectively bankruptcy) while they try and salvage things. The company will continue trading shares.
Rumour has it Walmart wants to buy the company, as well as the venture capitalists that own Comet.
