TalkBack / DK Crash Course: Full Tilt Obstacle Course Revealed
« on: June 05, 2012, 02:06:59 PM »

Nintendo's post-conference video showcased this motion-controlled NintendoLand attraction.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30482

Nintendo's post-conference video feed of NintendoLand's selection of asymmetrical games showed off DK Crash Course, an arcade-like experience using the GamePad's motion control.

The Full Tilt Obstacle Course shown featured an expansive level displayed in full on the TV, with a zoomed in view of the player's cart on the GamePad. Players tilt the GamePad to move the cart towards the goal, careful to manage its momentum without smashing their cart into any walls or plummeting off sudden drops. Various platforms and switches can be moved or activated using the GamePad's L and R buttons and control sticks.

TalkBack / Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition Unveiled for Wii U
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:57:14 PM »

Touch screeny, get splodey.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30477

Harley Quinn stole the show from Reggie Fils-Aime for a moment to introduce Warner Bros. Interactive's Martin Tremblay and Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition for the Wii U.

The Armored Edition sports features exclusive to the Wii U, the first one being a "B.A.T. mode" that activates through the GamePad; when Batman's B.A.T. armor is fully charged, activating B.A.T. mode enables him to unleash powerful takedowns.

Apart from beating up evildoers, the GamePad is used for menus, navigation, and inventory management. The GamePad's motion control functionality can be used to guide tools like the remote control Batarang, while the touch screen can be used to scan and interact with the environment. Other parts of Armored Edition also use the touch screen for precision control, such as explosive packs that can be placed and detonated with a tap of the touch screen.

TalkBack / Wii U GamePad Details Revealed
« on: June 03, 2012, 07:15:16 PM »

Now with clickable thumb sticks, an NFC reader/writer, and universal TV remote.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30406

Today's Nintendo Direct stream event started off by showcasing the new controller, the Wii U GamePad, named in honor of the original NES controller.

The GamePad now eschews circle pads in favor of clickable thumb sticks, and offsets the directional pad and face buttons for maximum comfort. The back has been redesigned to rest more comfortably in a user's hands.

Various connectivity functions have been built into the GamePad. An NFC reader/writer to the left of the screen allows the use of cards, toys, and other accessories to exchange information. A special TV button below the GamePad screen accesses a universal TV remote function that lets a user control their TV with the GamePad, even when the Wii U console is not powered on.

The Wii U GamePad can display video from the Wii U without delay, allowing users to continue playing or using apps while the TV is in use.

A closer look at one of the thumb sticks.

TalkBack / Gearbox Software Says Nice Things About Wii U
« on: June 03, 2012, 04:41:43 PM »

The developer claims that Nintendo has listened to their feedback on the upcoming console.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30398

Aliens: Colonial Marines developer Gearbox Software continued to praise the Wii U in an interview from Nintendo Gamer's June 2012 issue. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and art director Brian Cozzens held off naming technical specifications, but stated their excitement for the Wii U's capabilities in no small number of positive terms.

Pitchford said the Wii U "gives us a path to realise some things that are more future-looking." His statements are supported by Cozzens' comments that "many things that exist in the Aliens' franchise actually work for [the Wii U] controller" and "the features... enable us to do things we can't do with the other consoles." Cozzens also looks forward to the final controller specifications, including "some cool stuff that we've had some influence over" based on feedback they gave to Nintendo.

Cozzens hinted at the Wii U's technical power, saying "it will be one of the best looking versions of the game."

TalkBack / Social Media Apps Coming to Wii U?

Job listings tease at social media on next-generation consoles and "a magic fridge full of endless treats."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/30391

Recently posted job listings indicate various companies, including Google and Time Warner, seek to develop social media applications for next-generation consoles.

Google Inc. posted a job listing seeking a "Game Console Software Engineer" to develop YouTube for next-generation game consoles. The job posting describes the position as experimenting with the YouTube user base, creating a console-based TV experience, and delivering monetization strategies including pay-per-stream and ads. While the listing does not list any specific next-generation system such as the Wii U, technical knowledge of current-generation systems is a requirement.

A job listing on Time Warner's web site seeks a manager to work with mobile, connected-TV and game console partners for HBO GO. Again, no next-generation consoles are specifically named, but Nintendo is listed as a key partner, possibly one that intends to launch HBO GO in the near future.

An older posting seeking a PHP Web Developer to work for LogicBomb Media also lists Nintendo as one of their clients. LBM is a company that specializes in mobile web and social media applications.

TalkBack / Club Nintendo Survey Values Changing in July
« on: June 01, 2012, 09:44:34 PM »

3DS post-play and eShop coin values will be reduced, along with Wii and DS adjustments.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30382

Club Nintendo will make a number of sweeping changes to the coin values of games and surveys on July 1 in North America.

On 3DS, all post-play surveys will be reduced from 20 to 10 coins. Members of Club Nintendo will receive the new coin value for surveys completed after July 1. Most eShop games will be reduced from 10 to 5 Coins. All first-party and some third-party 3DS titles will be increased in coin value.

Wii game coin values will be adjusted, with newer titles generally receiving less reduction in value. Nintendo Select titles will be lowered from 50 to 20 coins. Following a recent system price drop, DSi and DSi XL system registration will be reduced in coin value. A number of DS titles will also have coin values adjusted.

After a recent update, survey expiration dates are now sorted in ascending order, making it easier to see which need to be completed first.

Wow, that actually sounds really slick and cool, as opposed to the usual "additional polish" or "target season" crock you hear from developers. If they have the balls to say that much, I'm inclined to believe them.

Frothing demand increases.

AAI:ME is pretty self-contained, as is AJ... but AJ has a very weak story in itself, considering the lengths they went to to shoehorn certain things in. Until now, I would only recommend AJ for fans and completionists.

Darn, so close to having video of Warren Spector singing Ducktales!

As much doubt as there is surrounding this game (morality system, action platforming, collectibles), I'm still optimistic about seeing where this one goes.

Apparently there's a chess-inspired logic/confrontation system. Various rumormills and fansites show that TGS revealed some new characters, including a female judge.

It's PSO2, not PSU2. But even PSO had its monthly Hunter's License fees, so...

I don't see the harm in using a free-to-play lobby system similar to that used in Zero and Portable. The PC platform can support either model, really...

I have lots of good memories with the GC version: all-nighters on split-screen co-op, memory card transfers, being able to pull out the old 'cube years later for guaranteed fun...

The fact it's on PC means it'll be dramatically easier to monetize; the PC audience is in some ways more receptive to that. On the other hand, a PC platform is also better than consoles for free-to-use online infrastructure.

General Gaming / Phantasy Star Online 2 teased at TGS
« on: September 18, 2010, 02:06:37 PM »
http://phantasystar.sega.jp/psportal/pso2/

The teaser for PSO2 was shown at TGS 2010 (alongside PSP2 Infinity) and has been making the rounds on streams and blogs. It's now up on Sega's Japanese site.

Release: 2011
Platform: PC

...

The fact they're recalling the glory days of old with the name (and theme music) has a lot of old-school fans frothing at the mouth (self included). Unfortunately, with the way PSP and PSU have gone, and the fact it's a PC title, there's also plenty of reason to be skeptical. Gamer expectations in general have also changed from ten years ago, particularly in regards to pay-to-play models and "MMO" gameplay.

What can we expect as we enter...

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Kirby's Epic Yarn

Again, there's that soft division between play and mastery that parallels Yoshi's Story: relatively easy to beat, but do you really have the patience and acumen to get all heart fruits, find the hidden Yoshis, and go in circles looking for 30 melons?

...I'm suddenly developing the urge to spend most of this game observing and experimenting with all the different ways to torment Kirby.

Don't disappoint me... or I'll make you wish you could die.

Yeah, money's never been an issue in Zelda games. It should stay that way.

What if Nintendo's next system simply clipped onto the TV wholesale?

And you could use those same clips to possibly have it hanging off a shelf or wall bracket. Or your pants.

24
Armored Core. Not that it's been terribly mishandled or anything, but I think it has potential to perform well if taken full blast to an online multiplayer platform (and the PC), either as PvE, PvP, or a mix.

To be honest, I've only ever owned AC: Project Phantasma on the PSX and dabbled a little AC2 on a friend's PS2. Those two games alone left such a lasting impression on me that I've quietly watched the series from the sidelines and always hoped to see it evolve into something much bigger. As popular as the series remains, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

I feel the likes of Valve would be a good guideline for a new AC experience geared for online communities. Steam can handle the complex amount of stat-tracking for the deep customization involved in AC, and combining that with the balance and design work that goes into AC, the complexity and nerdgasm factor of AC mech customization could not only be retained, but improved. I'm honestly not sure if Valve themselves should handle the game since their design philosophy seems more minimalistic, but if they could bring their attention to detail to a deep and diverse system like AC's, I'd be all for it.

From Software already has a good product on their hands. I wish they have the chance to make it great.

... ... ... ... ...

The other IP I want to bring back is Battleclash/Metal Combat. I have no idea how it would work with modern gaming expectations, seeing as the original games were Super Scope titles, but it would make a great title for Nintendo to hand over to a renowned western studio partner to turn into a "hardcore" mech game.

Mass media insists on blaming it on some huge fight and subsequent breakup he had with Mr. Yamauchi. But for Mr. Yokoi, Nintendo was one of the parents that raised him, and its development ethic was his home.
In this century, it's heartwarming to hear about the sort of relationship that Yokoi had with Nintendo, particularly the earlier years under Yamauchi's wing. It's like Chicken Soup for the Corporate Soul.
