More news throughout the year will change that, obviously.

I really like this new feature!

Ever consider an extra camera? I would have loved to see your reaction at 26:30, when a storm instantly sunk your ship and put you back to the title screen with no warning.

Extended Silence...F$%& you Koei! Hahaha

This is a major downside of modern gaming.
Fortunately, I can't remember the last time I logged into a NWC game.

What if you buy an additional 3DS and an additional game from the list? :D

Then you win, presumably.

Not sure I would call that winning, but that would work.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Do you regret buying a Wii U?
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:17:57 AM »
No, but I never expected the Wii U to be my only console. I knew going in that it would be a supplement to either a PS4 or XBO, just like last generation. Now I'll be able to play everyone's games. I win.

Me and a buddy had rented Xmen Legends 2 for the Gamecube.
[...]
My buddy threw up his hands and refused to start the game over. It was really bizarre.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to read! Amazing!

My story isn't that interesting, but it's probably the best gaming experience I've ever had.

Boring story, I know, but it sounded better in my head.

Sounds like a great experience. You'll probably look back on that game fondly for years and years. Cool stuff.

General Gaming / Share Your Personal Gaming Anecdotes

I thought of a funny story from my childhood earlier today and felt like sharing.

One day as a kid, I was at the mall with my family. I think it was 1995 and I was 8. My dad took me inside the KB Toy store and told me to pick out a SNES game. Awesome! For whatever reason, I decided to buy the Mighty Max game (an easy mistake in the pre-internet-game-review era). I took it to the counter and I'll never forget what the clerk said to me. He took a look at the game and said "Let me be honest. This isn't a great game. You want a great game? Buy this instead." He presented me with a new copy of Super Metroid and started explaining the cool powerups, bosses and graphics. I was sold!

Now I'm not sure why he felt the need to interject with a father buying his son a game, but God bless him for doing it. Super Metroid is one of my all time favorite games. I've beaten it countless times and have picked up every other game in the series since then.

To you, Unknown KB Toys Clerk from 1995, thank you. You have added something positive to this world. We need more people like you.

Anybody else have strange or interesting gaming related anecdotes like this one?

I
This series is like the Call of Duty of Japan!

Kinda weird how there isn't a Wii U version of this (that we know about). I always figured they tacked on the word "Ultimate" to MH3U since it started with a U.

I think Monster Hunter games actively avoid following a logical naming convention!

I have nothing but respect for Jools and Renegade Kid, but I can't get excited about a handheld FPS. That's why I never bought Dementium or Moon.

HOWEVER, the pricing structure for Moon Chronicles is really intriguing and I might actually try it out. Good move in my opinion.

Can the WiiU help save JRPGS?

This is a much better question.

I watched a lot of AGDQ this year and discovered an appreciation for speed-running, so I dug out my old consoles to replay Super Metroid, Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country!

For modern games, I've been playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Wii U). I really like it, but I'm confused at the critical response to this game. A lot of critics say ACIV "saved the franchise", since ACIII was so poorly reviewed. I don't get it, since I feel like ACIV has a lot of the same problems and frustrations that ACIII has - weird controls, annoying tailing/eavesdropping missions and instant desychronization. Personally, I enjoy both so I don't understand the huge difference in critical opinion.

World of Tanks. Played a couple hours. An alright time waster. Had a look at the money store. The prices were at the "Go get fucked level". A very expensive free to play game.
World of Tanks (Xbox 360 version):It's kinda shallow. Nothing really to it -- just a regular third person shooter of sorts with tanks of course. It's alright i guess, but i don't see myself really getting into it.

I was wondering why they made such a big deal when they announced this was coming to X360.

Definitely Attack of the Friday Monsters! I would love to see an expanded sequel with refined game mechanics. The card collecting/battling system had a lot of potential but didn't really go anywhere.

I tracked down a copy of retro game challenge after listening to this episode on my way to work! Likely wont play it until tomorrow, but you guys make it sound right up my alley!

Retro Game Challenge is so SO good.

F-Zero X - "Alright, First Place!"
NOTE: I played this on a Wii with a GameCube controller

I used to love this game back in the day. I never owned a copy, but I would play at a friend's house and I'm pretty sure I rented it about 3 times. Here are some of my thoughts:

The Difficulty:
This game is difficult! The controls take a while to master, especially when combined with vehicle selection and tuning. I started doing a little better when I discovered that favoring max speed over acceleration helps a lot. Even so, I failed Expert Jack Cup one too many times and got anxious to start GX. I gave up and used the code to unlock the bonus tracks, just so I could play them before moving on. No surprises - Joker Cup is super hard and X Cup is just insane. I'm assuming most people never saw the bonus tracks because you have to beat the other 3 cups on expert mode, which isn't easy!

Track Design:
As a lifelong roller coaster geek, I've always loved F-Zero's track designs. Many of them revolve around a single signature element (or "whoa!" moment) like a giant loop, jump or half pipe. I remember being blown away by the tracks that have you racing inside or outside a tube! Revisiting the game, I'm still impressed by a lot of the tracks.

Framerate vs Graphics:
I'm impressed that the N64 can handle such a fast, smooth framerate even with 30 racers on screen. It still plays great to this day. The graphics aren't so hot though. The vehicles look plain and the backgrounds are almost nonexistent. They did the right thing by focusing on framerate and gameplay, but the graphics were hurt badly because of it.

Vehicle/Character Design:
I love the over-the-top vehicle and character design. I mean, come on - the cast includes a space monkey, a space T-Rex, a space octopus, an old man, and James McCloud! Awesome.

The Character Portraits:
Sweet Baby Jesus, the character portraits are awful! (I'm talking about the smaller face portraits, not the full character drawings) They have about 15 pixels and are unrecognizable without squinting.

The Music:
I remember this game having a metal soundtrack but damn, it is so metal. Some songs even have double bass pedals and harsh vocals! Cheesy as hell, but songs like Mute City and Big Blue are Nintendo classics.

Overall, I had a great time replaying F-Zero X. It holds up surprisingly well for an N64 game. I was worried that my nostalgia would end up letting me down, but it didn't!

I'll return with my GX impressions once that game beats me down...

« on: January 15, 2014, 01:31:55 PM »

I think you guys brushed over my favorite thing about about the BD demo - the extensive amount of customizable settings. Battle speed, encounter rate and game difficulty can all be changed on the fly.

I don't finish many JRPGs, but these settings make it very likely for me to finish BD. About to die? Turn off encounters until reaching an Inn. Need to grind? Double the encounter rate and quadruple the battle speed! I've never seen these options in another JRPG. Bravely Default may be old-school, but it has very modern, player-friendly features.

On a side note, I was very happy to hear Attack of the Friday Monsters get some love. Glad I'm not the only one who found it top 5 worthy.

Did anybody watch AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) last week? It's an annual week long speedrunning marathon for charity.

A player by the name of CGN0 did an absolutely mindblowing speedrun of F-Zero GX's story mode on very hard mode. My feeble mind can't even begin to comprehend what he is doing with his hands. He must be a cyborg.

You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvrepvisxA0

ROGUE SQUADRON 4

1. Sequel

2. Wii U

3. A new studio with former Factor 5 talent

4. Three acts: one for each of the Star Wars trilogies. Each act would have missions and ships from it's respective trilogy. Get rid of the on-foot missions from Rebel Strike and keep it 100% vehicle based. The graphics should set the bar for future Wii U games, just like Rogue Leader did with the Gamecube. Best of all, this idea makes sense financially - Star Wars has mass appeal and they could time it to capitalize on the Episode VII hype.

I completely disagree about Rosalina. She is my favorite character in 3D World (lol, is this really a spoiler?) and I think she looks interesting in Smash Bros. That whole Kirby/Kart/Smash trailer was confusing as hell though.
