Sony had a huge comeback last gen with the PS3 but I can't see that happening with Nintendo's WII U with retail and 3rd party support.

The thing is Sony had to loss 5 billion dollars in order to make the comeback on the PS3 happen.  Right now even with the Wii U's poor sales, Nintendo is at least profiting off the system right now.  This is why they didn't cut the price this year like they did last year, since they've figured it's best to make money off the existing audience that's buying the system over losing more money in hopes it might gather larger appeal.  Nintendo would rather have a system with low hardware sales but somewhat profitable, over a system like the PS3 that ends up selling 80 million, but ends up losing billions in the end.

My usual mockery of the Wii U's abysmal sales numbers aside, I'm a little surprised Smash didn't give it more of a bump. It probably didn't help that Nintendo had no worthwhile bundles this year.

I figured Mario Kart 8 and SSB have enough of a crossover of fanbases that many of those for which SSB would be a system seller would already have bought a Wii U for Mario Kart.  Whichever one was released first was going to create the bump.

I don't think Nintendo cares about making a huge comeback this generation (not saying it shouldn't, and that's a completely different discussion altogether). It seems to be on a generational schedule of addressing mistakes outside of things like price cuts. For example, Gamecube had next to no online, Wii had one. It sucked and Wii U's is leagues better though still not great. I think Nintendo is content walking the path of least resistence. Changing that **** mid-generation is hard and costly. It's just trying to get through this generation so it can start over. That may not be the best way, but at this point, Nintendo knows it can get away with doing so.

Isn't that all Nintendo ever seems to be doing?

Not with its handhelds and certainly not with Wii. Nintendo practically had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the Wii generation, grasping for dear life onto a console that should have been replaced at least two years before Nintendo begrudgingly replaced it.

Well the good news for Nintendo is Amiibo sales are really good.  I expect lots of DLC for the Wii U version next year since if the fanbase is willing to spend $12 on glorified CPU opponents, you know they'll be willing to spend more for characters and stages.

Hey, I'll buy as much Smash U stage DLC as Nintendo wants to make. Unlike Amiibos, at least THOSE have a purpose.

I think it's kinda neat to raise my Zelda amiibo to be better than me. Also, it's cute when she brings back spoils from matches. I got some custom skills I was missing!

If you were worried about Level 5 a few years back, you needn't now as their third version of Yo-kai Watch 2 sold 1.24 million copies. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sells 79k more for a total of 306k. Grand Theft Auto 4 for the PS4 was released to sell 81.6k copies and observe PS4 sales of 68k.

EDIT: Apparently there was a PS4 bundle that included the as-yet-to-be-released Dragon Quest Heroes.

It's clear Smash 3DS catered primarily to the Japanese market, but it's still hugely disappointing to see Smash U, with 9 days worth of holiday sales, still not beat what Mario Kart 8 did in 4 days of sales at the end of May.

I'd argue that Nintendo wasn't ready to replace the Wii at the time. This is seen through how many Wii U games that had been planned for launch period were delayed beyond. I'd go further and say that had Nintendo of America actually supported the Wii in its later years with games besides one or two major titles (I'm referring to actually localizing games instead of passing on multiple localizations that could pad out the later years), I'm certain that the Wii U would be in a better state. The Wii brand wouldn't have been made so weak, at least in North America.

Back to brand management.  If your going to keep a brand then you need to make sure that brand was Kick-Ass to the end.  Sony was probably the only one to really achieve that this transition.

Even if Nintendo called the Wii U a different named and tried to treat it as a different brand, as long as the price, launch window lineup, controller, and almost non-existant third party support still remained the same, the system would still have suffered the same fate.

At the same time, even if Nintendo made sure the Wii had an amazing final year and the brand ended on a much higher note, that still wouldn't have meant anything for the Wii U if their biggest launch game had a similar game released on the much cheaper 3DS only 3 months earlier and the system was still $100 more expensive then the Wii was at launch with a bigass traditional controller that was literally the complete opposite of the main appeal the Wii remote had in the first place.

The Wii U's current state is a result of Nintendo messing up in nearly every category.  Just fixing one of the mistakes they made wouldn't have done much when the others are just as devastating.

I'd argue that Nintendo wasn't ready to replace the Wii at the time.
And I'd agree with you. It wasn't which is pretty much the entire problem. I've said this before: what was Nintendo doing with all that time? It sacrificed the last two years of Wii's life to not be prepared to launch a new console. Nintendo wasn't ready to replace Wii, but it should have. As a console, Wii U in late 2013 after all those stability and speed patches is what Nintendo should have been able to launch. I realize that's easy to say way after the fact, but I don't think anything most of us have been saying is all that outlandish or unreasonable. Nintendo made so many mistakes a company in its position shouldn't make. It has been in the game too long to release a console that brutally slow and unstable (did anyone not get at least one weird error at launch?).

As far as the game lineup, what hasn't been said about it? Generally speaking, Nintendo didn't have a decent launch lineup until like a year after Wii U launched which is ridiculous. Mario, Pikmin, and a Zelda remake would have been a decent launch lineup. I'm not suggesting Nintendo just shift those releases forward because that's impossible. The games weren't ready, but they should have. It says a lot about Nintendo's lack of preparedness and time/resource management. It was obvious that some internal changes needed to be made and from the looks of it, Nintendo is making them. In the last couple years, it has opened a new building, started working with other companies to push titles out, and consolidated its console and handheld hardware divisions among other things. Whether that and whatever else is going on internally is enough remains to be seen, but acknowledging (though without outright admitting) and addressing those problem areas is still a good start.

I will say this again.  Anyone still upset about the launch price of a WiiU better not own an iPad and get their heads out of their asses.

I know in a new article Neal mentioned that 5 Years was the lowest that Nintendo has done before a new console.  I like my Wii U for what it is but I don't think it has 3 years in it.

If NOA had localized the rainfall games themselves then what would actually have come out for the Wii in 2012?  In 2011 I was pissed off that they weren't localizing those titles as it felt like there was nothing for the whole year until Zelda came out at the end.  But 2012 was even more barren for the Wii.  If Xenoblade had been localized by NOA in a normal time frame then 2012 would have really been a bunch of nothing.  I guess Last Story would probably still have been a 2012 title here due to the time it would take to translate.  The only Wii game from 2012 I can think of that actually came out in Japan in 2012 is Mario Party 9.  In North America we got a couple 2011 titles moved into 2012 but Japan got practically nothing at all.  NOA couldn't localize titles that weren't being made.

The most baffling thing is that Nintendo made a big stink about how HD games require more resources and time to make and used that argument to suggest that their approach with the Wii was the better option.  So did they not believe that themselves?  Were they so arrogant that they felt it only applied to everyone else?  Or are they just idiots to not follow their own warning?  Their resulting actions are so bizarre it seems literally insane.  It must be hubris.  The Wii success went to their heads so they got lazy.

No, it didn't. You did. And you keep bringing this up and you're not even getting it right. Miyamoto said this one time at a shareholders meeting to explain why some games were delayed. That's hardly "making a big stink about it." Someone asked him a question and he answered it. And Miyamoto's answer had absolutely nothing to do with the company's approach with Wii. It wasn't even implied. You conjured that up out of thin air. Jebus, man. Here's the quote:
Quote from: Miyamoto
When it comes to the scale of software development, Wii U with HD graphics requires about twice the human resources than before. Please allow me to explain that we may have underestimated the scale of this change and as a result, the overall software development took more time than originally anticipated just as we tried to polish the software at the completion phase of development. However, we are almost out of this phase, and we are also trying to create something unique utilizing an easier development approach called “Nintendo Web Framework.â€
Can you stop making things up now? Can you let it go? You're making mountains out of molehills which I realize is your modus operandi, but seriously, knock it off. This is from a year and a half ago and Miyamoto stated Nintendo was nearing the end of that issue.

I mean, maybe he's mixing in part of the rationale for making the Wii sub-HD, which was that HD TV adoption rates were still pretty low during the Wii's development. Which I think was actually the correct call, one supported by he fast that Microsoft stopped shipping HDMI cables with the 360 when they figured out that most owners weren't even using it or hadn't actually set up their entertainment systems to take advantage of the higher native resolution. Just as many say that Nintendo fucked up by not matching the PS360 specs/optical output, I'm pretty sure that Microsoft and Sony could've released 480P consoles and outside of bitching from a small enthusiast base most people would not have minded, would have in fact liked the better FX this would have facilitated, and as a bonus the game budget arms race wouldn't have gotten so out of control and we'd have a lot more development houses still working today.
