Nintendo has revealed new games and a new control method for the NES games on Nintendo Switch Online.

In the Nintendo Direct presentation showing off Nintendo Switch Online, Gradius, Double Dragon, and Mighty Bomb Jack were among the 3rd party games shown for the service. NES Open Tournament Golf and NES Pro Wrestling were shown as first party games. It was not revealed whether the games would come at launch, as some of them were shown as unlocking.

Alongside the release of the online service will come with NES-themed Joy-Cons. The Joy-Cons will open for preorder on Tuesday for US$59.99.

UPDATE: Nintendo's online page has confirmed the first 20 games for the NES: Soccer, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Excitebike, Tennis, Balloon Fight, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, Double Dragon, Gradius, Ice Hockey, Mario Bros., Dr. Mario, River City Ransom, Pro Wrestling and Baseball. New games will be added at least three per month: Solomon's Key, NES Open Golf and Super Dodgeball in October, Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack and Twinbee in November, Wario's Woods, Ninja Gaiden and Adventure of Lolo in December.

Additionally, purchasing the NES Joy-Cons will require a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online, as one of the special offers. Exclusive gear for Splatoon 2 will be given to anyone who purchases a 1yr membership, starting in early October.

I've never been more irate with Nintendo than when they unveiled those Joy-Con NES controllers, specially when I have two perfectly fine NES Classic controllers sitting right next to me. $60 is an insult of a price.

I was pretty upset that the "special offers" weren't talked about.  That annoyed me.  I thought now would be the time since the service starts Tuesday.

Is it sad that the first thing I thought of was if you could play these while they were docked to a switch to get a proper D-Pad?

Yeah, that was hilarious. Nintendo is launching the service next week and still left info out. Sure. Fine. Everything is fine.

From the looks of it, you at least are getting two controllers for your trouble.

I'm just wondering who's gonna be the first to beat BotW with them.

This seems to imply the controllers are one of the special offers? ???

Plus some Splatoon 2 in-game gear.

It's nice to see third-party games are included as I wasn't 100% sure if they would be.

I don't play games online that much, but having Ice Hockey and Tecmo Bowl available that way may change that.

It is pretty amazing to think about the price gouging Nintendo is doing with the controllers.  Personally, I think the idea is cool, but I hope Nintendo allows a firmware for it to work in Docked mode.

But the real frustrating thing is Nintendo's lack for foresight...or more likely Nintendo's EXACT foresight.  They will probably do something very similar with SNES controllers when they are eventually launched on the online service.  That will be frustrating because it will be more to buy.

As good of a console Switch is.  And the number of great games on the console, I am bummed out at Nintendo's decisions with controllers.

Thankfully there seems to be a great market for aftermarket parts. I'm planning to buy a kit to change my grey controllers to either white or atomic purple w/ a fully functioning d-pad. Couple that with the adapters for 8Bitdo and other 3rd party/alt-console controllers to work seamlessly and I'm not sure I'll be buying another 1st party controller at all.

And here we thought the age of plastic crap was over.

There's also no way these things it in the charging grip, so it seems like the only way to charge these will be to attach them to the console.

We'll they need someway to offset all those lost sales from the hardcore fans we would have bought the same games they already bought on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS all over again individually on the Switch. :)

This is why I easily expect the SNES and N64 to appear as well.  The N64 in particular they'll probably charge over $100 for since many hardcore fans would go crazy to be able to play N64 games on an N64 controller again since the Classic controller has never fully been able to replicate it.

Those NES joycon are ridiculous.  $60, and they exclusively work with the NES titles.  I can think of a LOT of eshop titles that would gain a lot from being able to use those controllers.

Outside of that, it's kind of whatever.  If you're buying-in day one on this, it's because you play enough of the online Nintendo games to justify it, and crossing your fingers the NES titles they add after this are something you care about having access to.  Zelda and Mario 3?  That's really the only games at face value that I expect I'll play any of.
