This game from developer Level 5 (The dudes behind the Dark Cloud series) was announced for US release. I've heard Chris Kohler raving about it since the beginning of the year and after reading this and other previews, I'm excited about it. It drops this year.

I'll be picking it up on day one (along with SSBB).  I've been extremely interested in this game for ages.  I love the art style.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Is this the only Professor Layton thread we have?  That's ridiculous!

GameStop.com (of all places) has a great preview video up on their product page for this game.  Check it out!  But be sure not to purchase it from them because they're doing that retarded thing where they sell a $30 game for $35.

Instead, get it from one of these fine retail establishments.

The previews I've seen so far make this game look more like a puzzle game ala 7th Guest than an adventure game with dialog trees.

Next week, puzzle game purchase for me.  This should be a good distraction from Advance Wars, although I'm always up for a Wifi match anytime.  Has anyone heard whether or not the game will feature downloadable puzzles like it did in Japan?

This game seems to be getting a lot of buzz. I don't get it, other DS adventure and puzzle games are ignored. Is it the Top Hat?

Edit: I guess my previous title was confusing and disrespectful to the spirit of NWR. Thanks for fixing the horrible title re-educating me! Feel free to delete or merge this thread, perhaps create the official NWR Professior Layton instead of this one. Whichever serves the forums better.

I bought mine from the Nintendo Store and they made a big fuss about me buying the game. It turned out that I was the first person to buy the game. They took a lot of pictures of me in the foam hat and made me sign some forms. My geek badge will be printed somewhere for you all to point and laugh soon.

I'm not impressed with the video, I actually like the puzzles because they're killing me and it's uncompromising against all gamers as there is no difficulty level. Two sequels have been confirmed as well.

I heard everyone hyping this game for the past few months and it didn't sound very interesting. I tried it out and within 5 minutes I knew I had to buy it. At first I thought I might like it better if it were just the puzzles, this is my first graphic adventure and it took a little while before I got used to the mechanics, but now this has got me interested in finding other titles in the genre. I'm only a half hour into this one and I already can't wait for the sequel.

That is indeed true. I was very impressed upon turning on the game. The animation is quite nice as well.

This game is definitely something special and I can honestly recommend it to anyone who likes brain teasers with some adventure gaming. The weekly puzzle is also an awesome feature, and the one featured this week is great (turning 5 boxes into 4).

Yep, I bought the game where I could find it, which was GameStop (Small Town), went home and charged my Original DS, haven't played it in a few months.  Got the game into the DS and and went to touch begin.  It wouldn't reqister.  Tried calibration but that wouldn't work.  Called Nintendo they had me clean the sides of my screen.  That didn't work.  I really wanted to play the game so I had looked at the budget and found I had enough to get DSLite without breaking the back.  My wife Picked up the only DSLite they had at Walmart, A Blue and Back one.  Its got that roughy feel but I'm so oily that shiny blue part is really greased up.  Though that day was bad to begin with but I won't go into that here.

The worst part about the story is that all the mysterious get solved in a landslide at the end and the very end sequence doesn't involve one last puzzle.  I just beat it yesterday.  I still have I think around 12 puzzles to go but I know I have to have more because the rooms aren't filled I haven't finished the picture.

What a charming game.

Though I figured out the story very early on.. way back when Ramon was kidnapped.  Also, it needed more of those cute cutscenes.

After you get a puzzle right, do any of you guys point and wag your finger like Layton and Luke do? Or am I alone on that? :P

I'll definetely get the second one.  I just hope it doesn't pull a Pheonix Wright on me.

Am I the only one who's been quite disappointed with the downloadable games?  The first one (that was up for about three weeks or something) wasn't bad... but the second one was lame (which one of these is different?  that's not a puzzle!) and the third one was just counting - there wasn't even anything tricky about it...

The first one took me forever to figure it out.  Now that I know the answer I can't believe it took me so long.

The seond one took me about 30 seconds to beat.  I was disappointed.

Haven't gotten around to downloading the third one yet.

BTW, I finally beat puzzle 135.  I did it in something like 650 moves.  I'm glad to be done with it.

And how did the cat cross the stream anyway?

Same way as you: it took the boat. Reminds me of this quiz I took once:
Q: How do you put a giraffe in the refrigator?
A: Open the door, put giraffe in the refrigerator, close the door.
Q: How do you put an elephant in the refrigerator?
A: Open the door, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant, close the door.

lol

Just got the game this weekend to play after having been eliminated from the semifinals of UncleBob's smash tourney, and killing time till the Brawl release. It's really, really charming. They could've gone ultra-cheapy in the presentation, and people still would've bought it. But it's just too cool. I've played more Layton than Brawl, honestly :-[ (though that's partly because of all my time spent in the car recently) :)

Is the third one better?  The Second one had so much of the stuff I hated from the first and not the stuff I liked that I sweared off the series so I wouldn't break my DS.  I may rent it if thats the case.

Third one is waaaaay better than the second. You may still be annoyed by the "I presented the right evidence too early so I got a penalty" issue, but other than that it's fantastic.

Second game was a huge letdown. Third one tried hard for redemption, and was quite good, but still not as good as the first one. Manfred's trial in the first is still the pinnacle of the series.

I will agree with this as well. They aren't wrong per se, but they do fail to tell you some of the stipulations of the question. You may figure out a winning case, but it doesn't match the exact case they are looking for. There are definitely instances where I needed to take a leap of faith to answer the question because the specifics were not exactly detailed out.

What was so hard about that one?  I figured out right away that you needed to use the depth dimension.  By this point in the game you should know that all of the puzzles aren't as easy as they seem at first.

ah, but other puzzles give you extra info... It's not that it was extra hard.  Just vague.  After you get it wrong the first time they give you a little extra info.  ie: As far as I'm concerned 4 is a valid solution for #76.  There are several like that.  Still, several out of the number included in the game isn't bad.  I was just making an observation about the game.

You can make a square, it just isn't "solid".  You could also say that 18 were a valid answer which outlines a square in tiles and is still less than the official solution.  Incidentally, I got the puzzle right after the 3rd try... as there's only so many ways to approach this issue :)

There's no limit - you can get them all whenever.

Also, for the matchstick puzzles, some were way too easy and I'm sure most people had done them before, but some were just dumb (e.g. the dog after it got hit by a car).

The dog that got hit by a car one took me 20 solid minutes of thinking before I figured it out.  I thought it was a great puzzle.

This is when the forums were down, so Evan (who had just gotten his review copy) and I were playing through simultaneously in the chat room, and we found that the puzzles I had an easy time with (like the one at the beginning with the scale and the weights) were very hard for him and the ones he breezed through (like the dog-matchstick puzzle) took me forever.  It was really quite interesting to see how differently our brains work.

Amount of time is not directly proportional to the amount of fun to me though... I figured out the chess ones and the weight ones in relative short order, and loved them.  It took me FOREVER to get the dog hit by a car one b/c I thought I had the solution.  What I had done was take two of the legs to the top, but didn't rotate them correctly - I mean it just got ran over by a car!  What difference does the rotation make!  The game didn't like that as an answer, so I wasn't quite sure what it wanted.  I HATED that puzzle.

I think what makes a good puzzle to a particular person is how that puzzle engages your mind as your trying to solve it.

I did the dog hit by a car in less than 20 seconds, but for some reason the match had to be in the correct orientation (the match's head close to the body, not the opposite) and it told me I was wrong, that pissed me off.

The once completed, the gizmo will show you where hint coins are located if you don't touch the screen for a few seconds.  Very handy, if you don't enjoy tapping every square centimeter of your screen.

The only one that really got me was the Chocolate Code one.  That one sucked.

The chocolate code one forced me to use hint coins, which I really didn't do for any of the puzzles, so I agree that one did suck.

I think the OTTF one really threw me off because I read into it too much. The rest of the letters seemed to fit another pattern involving the number of letters between each letter, and due to that I totally overlooked the very basic premise of the puzzle. The few puzzles out there of that nature though sucked.

I also had a tendency to not read the entire instruction set so I would sit there for waaaay too long on some puzzles because I wasn't obeying the rules.

OTTF took me a while, too.  All of the find-the-next-sequence-in-a-pattern ones did.

Yeah, I didn't care for the Princess in a Box puzzles at all.

As for Chocolate code, the main issue was that the bite marks weren't very noticeable, IMHO.  I saw a screen of the Japanese original and they're much more noticeable in it.

The worst part was I noticed the bite marks right away but couldn't figure out what they meant.  After a long while I unlocked the first hint which mentioned that the girl suffered from "texting thumb".  At that point, I thought the letters lined up with the numbers on a phone key pad, and spent a long while without getting anywhere.  By the time I unlocked the next hint that told me to look at my keyboard I had completely forgotten about the bite marks, and spent the next half hour getting nowhere.

That's EXACTLY what happened to me on the OTTF puzzle - I still think I'm right.

Well, you see...

The one to the bottom left of the first T is S, which is obviously the preceding letter it in the alphabet. This is the same for the second T, and for the third letter (F), there's an E to the bottom-left of it.

All of these follow the pattern, so following that I got "O" for the blank spot. The hints weren't very helpful either - the final one was like:

Quote
As odd as it may seem, all the knowledge you need to solve this puzzle you probably had the day you stepped into first grade.  It's safe to say that it's one of the first things you learned

And one of the first things I learnt was the alphabet, obviously.

Ugh.

Wow, I actually did the exact same thing as IceCold at first.  I had completely forgotten about that.  Now I'm all pissed off at that puzzle again.

Yeah the OTTF puzzle was another one.... the chocolate one was too bad for me... noticed the markings pretty quick and even though I could recall all of the keys (my fingers just know where they are, not my brain) I recalled enough to construct the message, maybe I type to much.

Oh and save the princess 3 is the same as the last puzzle in club house games.

OTTF wasn't bad for me at all. But the chocolate one... there are just so many steps you had to take to get the answer, it drove me crazy.

If you're going to bump a 2 year old thread at least have a purpose other than the thread necromancy itself.

Anything we can help you with?

P.S.  I've purchased the second game but it's still in the shrink wrap.  :(

Dunno, the bump made me dig the game out, enter the secret door code and stuff. I've now got 130/130 puzzles solved, am missing two secret puzzles (101 and 115) and the final area of Layton's Tasks.

I think I'm going to stick only to the story puzzles because some of the other puzzles require me to take out some paper and a pen/pencil to make calculations, but this game is on a portable system so why should I even do that.
