Oh you like video games? Name every game you beat in 2020
« on: December 31, 2020, 08:44:22 PM »
Insert image of Donkey Kong aiming a gun square at your face. He's got that grin on his face, you know the one. Definition of "beat" is up to your own personal interpretation.

I definitely played more titles this year but the playtime was probably around the same, because of the types of games I gravitated towards this year (More adventure games less RPGs).

Animal Crossing New Horizons
Crystallis
Daemon X Machina
Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope
Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Deadly Premonition Origins
Deadly Premonition 2
Earthbound
Heave Ho
Journey
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Final Mix
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
Life is Strange
Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Mario 64
Metal Gear Rising Revengence
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Moving Out
Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight
Persona 4 Dancing All Night
Persona Q
PokƩmon Ultra Sun
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure
SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Sonic Forces
Steam World Dig 2
Steam World Heist
Streets Of Kamurocho
Super Puyo Puyo 2
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Tetris 99
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
The Stretchers
Tonight We Riot
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Until Dawn
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Yakuza Kiwami 2

My personal top recommendations have got to go to Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Life is Strange and Deadly Premonition 1.

Xenoblade takes a somewhat clunky masterpiece and smoothes down every single one of those rough edges with sandpaper. It's a joy to play and quality of life improvements fo tracking quests, trading and faster loading times, make older versions seem unplayable in retrospect. Glorious new music, HD visuals and new story content that adds to the Xenoblade canon without feeling too out of place. It was so easy to keep playing and playing that I did every quest and killed every secret boss except the last.

Life is Strange is such a beautiful game. The gameplay mechanics and the story are like Ying and Yang, you can't have one without the other. The story is so effective and heartbreaking because of the format, not in spite of it. The characters, the music, it all left a profound impression on me, there were tears, laughs and gasps in shock. What about Before the Storm you ask? Well I'm happy to report that this is also fantastic. It's a smaller, less grand story but it plays to it's own strengths. There's some really playful dialogue opportunities in Before the Storm that I feel surpass the original, despite being the little sister of the duology.

Deadly Premonition 1 is the work of an auteur. Trust me, this game has soul and a vision. It's a game I thought about for weeks and weeks after the fact. It has so many cool details you will only realise at the end, or will only realise after looking it up on YouTube. Deadly Premonition Archives has some great videos chronicling the timeline and all the easter eggs, they make a compelling argument for it being the greatest game of all time. Even the more Resident Evil style action segments are actually quite fun. It's not deep mechanically but simple is good, Agent York smashing a zombie with a pipe is satisfying every time. It's greatness is what makes Deadly Premonition 2 so disappointing. The sequel is undercooked like raw chicken. Don't get me wrong it has some hilarious moments that the series does so well. But they only paper over back steps in the combat, side quests, narrative, music and world design. Let's not even talk about the technical performance.

Every game, huh? OK, I played a few games this year as I attempted to clear my backlog a bit and get some Platinum trophy runs in on games I'd finished before:

PS4:

- Persona 5 (original)
- Back in 1995
- Sea of Solitude
- Journey to the Savage Planet
- Nioh 2
- Donut County
- Tokyo Xanadu Ex+
- Twin Breakers
- Deliver Us the Moon
- Maneater
- Infamous: Second Son
- Ratchet & Clank (2016)
- Battle Chasers: Nightwar
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Doom Eternal
- Doom (2016)
- Terminator Resistance
- 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
- Those Who Remain
- Ghostrunner
- Destroy All Humans (2020)
- Sakuna: Of Rice & Ruin
- Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered
- Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered
- Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered
- Close to the Sun
- Mega Man Zero 1 (HD remaster)
- Resident Evil 3 Remake
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake
- The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
- The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope
- Mortal Shell

Switch:

- Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
- Xenoblade Chronicles DE
- Paper Mario: The Origami King
- Super Mario Sunshine (All Stars)
- Pikmin 3 Deluxe

Might have missed a digital game or two, but I think that's all of them. Would have gotten more knocked out this year, but I was really sucked into that CTR Remake for the first few months of the year when they were still adding new tracks & racers. My Switch was also out on loan for most of the year. As you can see, I also had some real time sinks on that list.

Overall, I think I accomplished my goal.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

I have that feeling a lot as well. Also, I thought you played a lot more Castlevania than that. In the Backlaugust theard, you listed a whole lot at the time to really help boost the NWR score and join RAB and I as most accomplished completers.

Nothing wrong with that. But are you at least doing alright in life?

Well in that thread Mop it up brought up the point if someone plays the same game on a different platform, should it count as part of your backlog since you were using loopholes to inflate your numbers.  So I took it to the next level and said if playing on a different system counts, then so should replaying the game on a higher difficulty, or a different character, or to a different ending as well.   That's why my Castlevania list was so high.

So if I was to get that technical for this thread ;D

I would have liked to finish 2020 by completing Dante Must Die mode on the original Devil May Cry mode as well but I've had to take a break since I just can't beat the fucking Nightmare boss because the camera angles keep screwing me over in the fight.  Normal and Hard, your Devil Trigger just eats through the bosses health so the fight doesn't last very long, but in Dante Must Die the boss has so much health no matter how well I play it's only a matter of time before the camera switches to a different angle and I get off screened by an attack and half my health is gone.  I had to stop because my blood pressure was going through the roof.  Will come back in the near future, but need break for now.

Oh! I beat Mario 64 on the 3D All-Stars collection.

Guess I technically beat Animal Crossing New Horizons since I got the credits to roll at the 'end' of the game.

Also beat Links Awakening.
