TalkBack / Re: Metroid: Samus Returns Announced For 3DS

HELL YES TWO NEW METROIDS

I initially was skeptical cuz Mercury Steam but the Treehouse playthrough looked like what I've been waiting for for 13 years. AM2R was great, hopefully this will be at least just as good.

I have put 15 hours into this game, seen maybe 20% of it, and I am ready to put it into the pantheon. I can't get over the world. It is so big and so alive and so chock full of stuff. This is the best open world I've played in. Both the physics engine and the enemy AI are so, so good and seeing those two systems interact in this world that is so beautifully crafted is something I don't see getting old. I'm also a big fan of the puzzles in the shrines. Thanks to the aforementioned physics engine, so many of them feel like there are multiple solutions to them and I just happened to figure out one of them. The game wants you to try to break it. So liberating.

Going in I really thought I was gonna hate all the stuff that goes along with being an open world game and in a shocking twist, that's all the stuff I love the most. I should call in sick to work tomorrow.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Indies for the Switch!

WHO NEEDS THIRD PARTIES INDIES ARE THE NEW THIRD PARTIES

Seriously that is a long and exciting list of games. I am so happy/relieved to know there will be plenty of things to play on Switch this year besides the first party stuff. Nintendo has been laying groundwork with indies the last several years and now it appears that work is paying off. I also didn't truly realize until this Direct that Switch will be my preferred indie platform because so many indies lend themselves so well to being on a portable. More of this please, Nintendo.

March 24th, 2017. The same day Wind Waker came out in 2003.

Close, but no cigar. Bested by The Younger Plumber.

The White Sox traded Chris Sale. I am very sad.

How terrible are the waggle controls for new play control Jungle Beat? Jungle Beat is so fucking good that I have kept a terrible peripheral around for 11.5 years for this one game but it wound be cool if I didn't have to do that.

7
Welp, Indians now look likely to pull this off with no Carrasco, Salazar, or Brantley against the best team in the league. Baseball is so dumb. I love it.

8
If the Indians can win tonight, maybe they have a shot at winning this thing.

Then again I've picked against them every series and basically assumed they were dead after Carrasco went down so what do I know?

I played Champions Road like five times and said "Yeah I've played enough of this game." Kudos for trying that many times, Champions Road is no joke.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Forum Snap Poll: How Sold Are You on the Switch?
« on: October 23, 2016, 01:08:12 PM »
I'm 100% sold on it. I will get the Switch when the new Mario comes out. If that's a launch title, then I'm day one. If that's a November 2017 title, then I'm waiting a while. Unless BotW on Switch is the better version of the game. Then I'm day one regardless.

11
Ian is correct that the World Series is what really matters, but winning a pennant for the first time in forever is also a big deal in the moment.

12
Congrats to Cubs fans from a White Sox fan. I will be less forthcoming with goodwill in four years when the Cubs have done this five times in a row and the White Sox are still wandering aimlessly in the wilderness.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo Switch Pre-Release Discussion (March 2017)
« on: October 21, 2016, 02:22:56 AM »
For my entire conscious life, I've been very interested in buying the next new machine that allows me to play the new games made by Nintendo. The Switch is the next new machine, and I will happily buy it. New Tokyo EAD (or whatever that team is called these days) Mario is coming for it. I am hype.

I will probably use the Switch as a traditional home console at least 95% of the time that I use it. Portable mode, detachable controllers, I won't use those features outside of trips. I do almost all of my 3DS playing at home on my couch. And that's fine. Nintendo's not forcing me to do any of that stuff and that Pro controller looks great.

Getting outside of my own POV, that trailer was a home run, even if most of the scenarios shown were laughable. The messaging of the system is clear, that Switch noise is genius and should become as iconic as the Mario coin noise if Nintendo does it right, the trick of switching from dock mode to portable mode is almost magic, and there appears (for now) to be third party support. I'm also shocked the Switch looks like it really pulled off being at least on par with the Wii U on a mobile processor.

Nintendo learned all the right lessons from the failure of the Wii U. This is what the Wii U should have been. I think it has a real good chance of being a mainstream success which means Nintendo might wait a little longer before switching entirely to mobile development. And that's all I want.

AM2R is (almost) the Truth.

I am shocked at how much of a Metroid-ass Metroid game this is. The way Samus moves and animates, the art style, the music, sound effects, all the intangibles, this is Metroid. I play as many Metroidvanias as I can get my hands on and this is as close as we've gotten to Zero Mission since Zero Mission. One dude made this!

Someone in this thread said items and upgrades aren't as cleverly hidden as they are in Nintendo-made Metroids, and I think that's accurate. We'll see how the end game content is, as that's usually where the multi step shinesparking stuff happens. (I'm only two hours in.)

Quibbles aside, the game is giving me the same "I need to play all of this ASAP" pull that the best Metroidvania games give me. That's just about the highest compliment I can give a game.

So far, 10/10 would torrent again.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Releasing Classic NES This November

So, those controllers are compatible with Wii/Wii U via Wiimotes which is some hot ****. Playing NES games with that sharp-edged, non ergonomic rectangle controller is how God intended it. PLEASE don't screw up that controller, Nintendo.

I'm definitely getting one of those controllers, but I'm probably getting the system too. Wii U emulation of NES games is, uhm, bad. Seriously, it was much better on the Wii. So hopefully they don't screw that up either.

Also if you want one, you better preorder. Demand for this thing is gonna be insane.

I made a few more levels, I'm only kind of proud of two of them.

Long and Strong: D5F2-0000-0044-743B

A long Super Mario World style level. I think I did an okay job here of teaching things early on that you'll need to consider later and having some visual cues to hint at other things going on in the level.

2-4: D2E4-0000-0039-E88B

If I ever get enough stars to upload enough levels, I'd love to upload an entire "game." 32 levels all titled after the original Super Mario Bros level naming scheme. This could be my castle level at the end of world 2.

I've made two levels. I only like one of them.

Up & Down: 54D0-0000-0025-BE80

It's easy/moderate difficulty. Has more than one idea/set piece in it. I still only have the beginner's tool set, so pretty simple on that front.

It was kind of great to hear James begin the transition from Troll Commentator to Competent Host. James has hosted before but he took this one more seriously than those previous hosting duties. He was good at it! Already! Obviously Jonny knew that was going to be the case and that should have been the only vote of confidence I needed, but it was still a pleasant, reassuring surprise. And Greg's back! Thank God!

Pretty solid start to Season 5. Kudos, gentlemen.

I gotta be honest: there are certainly plenty of excellent panelists left, but I'm not sure a post-Jonny RFN is something that altogether interests me. I love Greg & James and John can certainly be amusing, but to me the glue that held the show together was the level-headedness & insightfulness of Jonny. I'll certainly check out an episode of the "new" RFN, but given that I didn't really start to listen to RFN until Jonny was the host, perhaps it's fitting that I stop listening to RFN when Jonny takes his final bow. *sigh* I dunno.

I'd be lying if I said this exact thought hadn't crossed my mind. But I will continue listening. RFN will be different and that's okay.
