It looks like we may soon be able to add Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to the list of Wii U Kickstarter games. It appears to be a stretch goal at $3,000,000.

It's unfortunate that such a stigma seems to be attached to the game when, quite honestly, there's not a whole lot these days that is genuinely new. I suppose when compared to 3D open world games or first person shooters, sidescrollers do appear more quaint, even if they might provide a tighter, more controlled gaming experience. Perhaps you're right, and Tropical Freeze will one day be looked back on as a great game. It's just a shame that some people may not realize how good it is until it has had to stand the test of time rather than simply enjoying it right now.

DKC2 was an ambitious cutting edge game for 1995.

Tropical Freeze is an ambitious cutting edge game... for 1995.

See the difference?  Tropical Freeze got less attention because it's a retro-themed game released during a time when Nintendo had released a fair bit of other retro-themed sidescrollers.  DKC 2 was contemporary.  Tropical Freeze plays to nostalgia.

Having played both games, I'm not sure that I do see the difference. To begin with, exactly how "cutting edge" DKC2 was when it was first released? It was not a huge leap over the original DKC in regards to technology or gameplay. As for being contemporary and ambitious, I find the design of many Tropical Freeze levels to be unparalleled today.

I think you're trying to argue that the game is retro-themed because it's a side-scroller (as in "all side-scrollers are retro if they weren't made in the '80s or '90s") and therefore panders to the player's nostalgia, which I absolutely believe to not be true. The game stands on its own merits, and only minimally references past games in the series (such as the inclusion of mine cart levels, with which they do many crazy new things). Besides, Donkey Kong Country Returns seems to have garnered much more attention that this game, and in my opinion that game was far more leveraged on nostalgia. Tropical Freeze is a game that anyone can enjoy, even if you are unfamiliar with previous titles in the series. It's not the familiar that made me fall in love with this game, but the exciting and imaginative new ideas, music, and experiences.

Even though I absolutely adored the original DKC, this one undoubtedly improves upon it. This game is damn near a masterpiece, and I wholeheartedly agree that "they got this one right." There really is a lot to love here. Some levels moved away from the traditional DK Isle settings, offering cool locales like an amusement park or castle. The animal buddies provided some fun alternative ways to travels through the stages. However, as mentioned, the real star here is Wise's soundtrack. The songs just seem to be perfectly paired with the levels. All of these, and the simplicity of the platforming gameplay, kept me returning to this game again and again when I was young.

Fast forward to today, and our most recent DKC game was Tropical Freeze -- a game that I believe was sadly overlooked by many, but which is very much the "Diddy's Kong Quest" of its day. It does many of the same things that DKC2 did for the original series -- fantastic, creative levels featuring awesome levels of detail; alternative means of progressing through stages by using various Kongs; and an unbelievably good soundtrack by David Wise. Seriously, the soundtrack for Tropical Freeze is very possibly the second best in the entire series. It features some of the most enjoyable levels I have ever played in a platformer, and much like DKC2, I find myself returning to it again and again, just for fun. It breaks my heart that Zach doesn't want to give the latest Wii U game a chance. I'm almost tempted to redeem the game as my Platinum Club Nintendo reward and send him the code, because I just don't think Tropical Freeze should be missed.

Another solid music segment, gentlemen! Hats off to those who requested the Phendrana Drifts from Metroid Prime -- that song had completely slipped my mind. Also glad to hear some Kirby's Epic Yarn representation. Also, thanks to Scott for covering Xenoblade. If I could have included one more song, I would have given the nod to Ducktales (Remastered?) "Himalayas".

I actually submitted the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze track "Frosty Fruits". I forgot to include my forum handle when doing so, and the one I provided is indeed my real name. When I suggested the game, it was originally going to be accompanied by an e-mail praising its soundtrack and how criminally overlooked it was. However, as I neared the end of the e-mail, my iPhone decided to simply erase the entire thing, and I couldn't recover it. That being said, you were correct in assuming that the track is a pseudo-mix of a Donkey Kong Country 2 classic. I strongly urge folks to check out some of the games other songs via youtube, as there are so many that stand out, such as Wing Ding and Cannon Canyon. If DKC 2 has the best soundtrack in the series, I would be so bold as to say that this game's is easily the second best.

I've bought more of these than I'd like to admit, but I think after Megaman, I'm done.

The only exception I've made for myself is if they release an alternate Mario Amiibo fashioned after Super Mario World:

Holy Crap! I hadn't even thought about the possibility of a Classic NES or SNES series of figures. Having spent hours staring at that older art when I was younger, I would buy amiibo based on those designs in a heartbeat.

New Donkey Kong and Rosalina amiibo designs can be seen in the Mario Party 10 trailer, so I'd wager those two are all but guaranteed. Would love to see a different design for DK, and a classic Wario.

Looks like Best Buy has their eshop gift cards at 10% off right now.

I went to Best Buy yesterday and these were not on sale.  They don't look like they're on sale via your link, either.  Is this for next week or something?

I had heard that those were a one-day sale.

I'd love to end up with as even a balance as possible. I need about 266 points for one more code. So it looks like I'll be putting another $26 into the eshop before the 31st.

I recently purchased Stealth Inc. 2 and Telsagrad. Looking at other Curve Digital games, such as The Swapper or Lone Survivor...

Oh, and don't forget that DLC counts, such as the Mario Kart track packs.

I had also heard that the second half of wave 2 (Luigi, Pit, Captain Falcon) had been delayed. I've also heard that some places already received shipments and are already selling them. I wouldn't worry too much unless the order is outright cancelled.

I saw a tip on CAG Canada that Nintendo removed the street date for wave 2. Sure enough, when I walked into Wal-Mart this morning, I was able to pick myself up a Little Mac. Diddy Kong was also available. There were only two of each! Get out there and get those amiibos, now!

I'm getting a Yoshi cos I like him. Plus he works in Smash/MK8/Yoshi's WW.

Ironically, I don't play as him in Smash though.

Unless I'm mistaken, Yoshi is also slated to work with Mario Party 10. Yoshi is one of the few I've considered picking up because his model looks pretty good, and the potential value seems rather good.

As previously stated, I've decided to only buy amiibo that offer good value (i.e. work across several different games), or that I think look really cool. Hopefully, those two things will overlap in the future.

At this moment, I find myself rather torn. I'm quite interested in the Wii Fit Trainer amiibo, which obviously doesn't fall into the value category. However, I do like the look of this particular amiibo, except for the clear plastic cast that helps connect her foot to the base. To be honest, I really don't like the look of any amiibo that have any type of support in that regard (Link, Fox, Captain Falcon, etc.). Meta Knight is the only one whose awesome look isn't really hindered by the support, in my opinion. Little Mac, Mega Man, and possibly even King Dedede, remain on my future purchase list.

The problem is, Wii Fit Trainer likely won't be available much longer. Should I indulge my mild interest, or save my $14 for future amiibos (and possibly regret my decision)?

I stopped by Wal-Mart on my way home from work to check them out. Sadly, there we only about six hanging on hooks near the actual Wii U games -- the rest were on a shelf several aisles over and facing the back wall. While they had quite a few of them, they didn't seem to have a terribly large selection. It seemed like they had an abundance of the figures they thought would be popular, which were Mario, Link, Peach, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Pikachu, and then several copies of Fox and Samus as well. I only saw one copy each of Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, but they were on a restocking shelf near the department register.

I thought the figures looked pretty neat -- neat enough to convince me to purchase Little Mac when he is released in a couple of weeks. I really liked the packaging, which I am going to try very carefully to preserve by using an xacto knife to slit open so I can slide the figure out.

At this time, I only plan on buying the figures that I think are either very cool, or a really good value. Right now, it seems that Link is probably the best value, as he offers the best functionality between three games -- Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and of course, Smash Bros. It seems like this sort of stuff will be constantly changing though, so I'll have to keep an eye on it. As of this moment, I plan on purchasing the aforementioned Little Mac, Mega Man, Shulk, and possily Meta Knight and Toon Link.

Also, can you register these suckers on Club Nintendo? You really ought to be able to...

Attention Canadian Shoppers: Kirby Triple Deluxe (and apparently A Link Between Worlds) is currently $19.99 at Shopper's Drug Mart!

I picked up my copy of Kirby at 12:30 last night/this morning!

After listening to the latest Nintendo Voice Chat podcast in which Dennis was a guest, it's clear to me that he is a man with some pretty cool ideas, but he seemingly has no idea how to focus on just one thing to see it come to fruition. It's a sort of "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" scenario. Instead of having a company focused on combining all of these different aspects of entertainment, why not just pick one aspect and do it really well? That's how businesses succeed. That's probably why he worked so well with Nintendo -- they helped him to focus on what mattered regarding video games. To try and combine all these different entertainment ideas and make them work, while a great idea in theory if done correctly, seems like it has an extremely long shot of succeeding, in reality. The name of the company seems rather fitting, at least.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Where does the Virtual Console go from here?
« on: October 29, 2014, 08:57:27 PM »

I wrote a (long) letter to RFN with the following suggestion which unfortunately never made it to air.

If it's a money issue (i.e. licenses, fees third parties need to pay, etc.), why not allow a pre-order/kickstarter-like option for possible future releases? The funds could go toward getting the game released on the service. Once funded and released, all future purchases would be money in the bank. It might help to alleviate any anxiety third party publishers may have, and it could possibly help bring games with licensing issues to the service. All they need to do is throw up a page on the eShop where people can periodically vote/pre-order. Heck, it might even help drive more traffic to the eShop on a regular basis.

Anywho, I'm probably oversimplifying it, but I think there's a potential solution in there somewhere.

I'm really curious about Lone Surivor, which was just released on the eShop. It's published by Curve Digital, who are also know for the Fluidity games and the upcoming Stealth Inc. 2. Has anyone played it on PC?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Post your favorite Wii U games
« on: September 07, 2014, 02:44:11 AM »
Gee, this is actually a rather tall order, but it's not due to a lack of options! My favourite release so far would have to be Super Mario 3D World, as it was an absolute blast from start to finish. NSMBU, NSLU, and DKC Tropical Freeze are terrific platformers, and I've enjoyed Mario Kart 8 and Need for Speed Most Wanted U greatly as well. Pikmin 3, Batman: Arkham City, and The Wonderful 101 were also quite enjoyable.

On the eShop, the NES Remix series, Shovel Knight, Guacamelee and Ducktales Remastered were big hits with me. I'm very eager to play several games which I already own but have yet to begin, such as Darksiders II, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Directors Cut, Batman: Arkham Origins, Lego City: Undercover, Rayman Legends, and Zombii U.

There's also plenty to look forward to in the next 12 months as well!

So this is "a new entry in the Wii U series" -- does that mean that the 16 different NES games will be ones we haven't seen before?

I love the NES Remix series, but I'm wondering whether challenges from 16 different NES games will be worth the $29.99 price tag, considering that the $14.99 original and its sequel contained 16 and 12, respectively. I suppose it will depend on the included games.

TalkBack / Re: Xenoblade Chronicles Coming to New 3DS Models
« on: August 29, 2014, 11:33:59 AM »

As far as I'm concerned, more Xenoblade Chronicles is never a bad thing, no matter what system it's on. Provided it runs properly, having the ability to play this title on a handheld could be very beneficial -- I certainly know that it would have come in handy when I was glued in front of my TV for 150 hours playing the Wii version.

But don't worry, folks, this probably won't even be released in North America -- at least, not without a big campaign push. #OPERATIONRAINFALLPART2

I already pre-ordered my DLC. First time ever doing that. First time ever paying for DLC, actually.

I think this is a great value. At $12 for 16 tracks, you are essentially getting another 1/2 of the game. That's less than 1/4 of the game's original retail price, and less than $1 per track. If anyone who enjoys playing Mario Kart 8 is planning on buying this DLC, they'd be insane not to pre-order both packs for the discount price.
