Mario Maker confirmed!
« on: June 05, 2014, 06:36:48 PM »
Mario Maker has been confirmed for Wii U. It's a tile-based level editor that uses the Gamepad's touchscreen. You can switch between 8-bit Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. graphics, with more graphics styles and objects planned for the final product. The game is releasing sometime in 2015.

Source: e3.nintendo.com

---------------------------------------------

Quote from: GoNintendo
Coming from a USGamer interview with Takashi Tezuka ...

"Obviously, there will be other graphical styles included and nothing's been decided yet, but I'd also like to include other graphics that aren't Mario. No, it won't be top-down (like Zelda) It's always going to be a 2D platformer."

- plans to integrate more enemy and object types
- hopes to include features similar to those of that of Mario Paint
- would like to add a music composition feature
- Tezuku says "sharing with friends is really the whole point of making levels"
- details on sharing have not been made public

For you it may be the greatest rumour but it doesn't strike my fancy at all. I've never really been interested in doing that. I think part of the reason is because I've always been satsified with the level design present in games and Mario platformers in particular that I'm not playing wishing I had the ability to make my own levels. And even if I don't care for a level design, I'm not wishing I had the tools to do it better. I just play it and move on. Same goes for things like Smash Bros. Brawl stages, user created puzzles in Picross, or Civilization fan mods. I'm content with the existing product and have no desire or wish to try and design something worthwhile nor do I feel like going through other fan created content to find something worthwhile or genius.

So I take it you don't like being creative? You've never wanted to create your own levels in a video game?

If this is an eShop release, it won't be $30. Why do you assume it will be retail? It could be a smaller title like Pushmo, NES Remix, or Dillon's Rolling Western.

Definitely part of a suite or its a dirt cheap eshop game. Can't expect this to be much more than  that unless is uses HD textures and the like, which it won't of course.

The point is you can create them yourself and share them with other players. Haven't you ever wanted to make your own levels for fun?

Yes, but not some rote Mario levels. I am interested in more intense creation-- enemies, scenery, obstacles, etc. Then again, that's why I'm studying to get into the industry! :)

This would be a cool tool and frankly a no-brainer for Nintendo since such tools already exist and Nintendo gets no cut.  But the problem is that those tools exist and they're free and Nintendo is probably not going to provide as robust of an experience.  But it might appeal to people that do not know that these tools are available.

I wouldn't get it simply because it would likely use crappy NSMB polygons.  I want to use the sprites from SMW and SMAS and Nintendo certainly won't offer that.

I don't care if it uses assets from NSMB, SMB3, or SMW... The point is Nintendo is finally making a level editor, after all these years of hoping and begging.

What system do you think it will be for? Wii U or 3DS? Or maybe it's a cross-platform release like Smash Bros.

Um if you don't care then why are you so damn excited? Are you just excited because Nintendo is making a level editor at all? I think most people are just not that excited because in reality Nintendo's game designers are top notch, it's their trademark and they sole reason they still exist as a company so why would someone get excited for fan/user created crap that will not live up to the level design Nintendo's own highly skilled developers with their combined 30+ years experience? Also as stated in the thread, these tools already exist and are for free if you want to edit levels in a Mario game have at it nobody is stopping you. Or download one of those awful hacks and see for yourself how bad they are. At best it would be good for an afternoon then become really boring.  What's next a Pac-Man make your own maze game?(fixed)

Ooh, was with you until this. No, one has nothing to do with the other, and that's rather disingenuous.

If that is how I feel about it what does it matter to you? If that is how he feels about it what do I care? I stand by my sentiment but I edited the comment nonetheless just for the hell of it. Also I don't share my opinions to be liked, I comment like everyone else does when I think of something to say, if you don't like what I have to say fine by me. They are related though despite your effort to dismiss my opinions because they differ from yours. Currently the entire industry, this community and site as well, has recognized the Wii U has a sever software shortage, so it stands to reason that anything would get some folks excited but this is a low point, something you can get for free elsewhere, something that allows you to edit 30 year old content, and something that flies in the face of the most skilled, world reknown programmers in the entire industry. If Nintendo has sunk so low as to see this as something to release they are grasping for straws because nobody but the most hard core fan wants this, and they already have the machine and this is likely an what $5 a pop game? Not something that will rake them in a lot of dough now is it? So yes a low point it is.

So I take it you don't like being creative? You've never wanted to create your own levels in a video game?

I've had ideas of video games I'd want to create but to just tack on or add some so-so levels to an existing game is not something I'd be interested in. As people sort of mention in this thread, a create your own level kit sounds neat at first but then you soon realize that you can only use the items and tools given in the kit so you may not be able to achieve your ideal design anyways and are stuck with limited options. And then the appeal is fast gone. Moreover, let's say 1000 levels are made. I'd wager only 25 would actually be cool and worth checking out and I feel that is being generous. I do not want to wade through the other 975 to find them so I just wouldn't bother with it.

It might make me a downer and I try and avoid that attitude on here but in this case, I'm afraid it is the one E3 rumour I've felt really blasé about and yet it also looks to be one of the most likely to happen.

Shouldn't we have an e3 rumors megathread instead of a thread for each.

I said this in another thread but I'm all for thread creation and proliferation even if a thread is only good for 1 or two posts. Heck, there is now a thread about this thing in the Handheld forum and the Talkback forum. I love it!

In fact, I'm glad to see tendoboy1984 back after an absence because he right away helps create new threads. Even if you don't like his original post or idea, chiming in your thoughts can get the ball rolling and leading into an interesting conversation anyways. Threads on the same topic can turn into different conversations but one thread on a topic is always stuck to the flow of conversation that thread is taking and conversations can be more stifled, snuffed out faster or lost in an ever-growing page count.

You don't appear to be interested in discussion asking me why I care about your post, and why you care about anyone else's.

"If that is how I feel about it what does it matter to you? If that is how he feels about it what do I care?"

One open to discussion wouldn't be so closed-minded. :/

And if this is a good mood to you, tell me when you're in a bad mood so I'm nowhere near you, or I'll give you the same attitude right back at you, and I won't hold back either. :)
