That Blair Witch camera style is cool when done right, but I hate it when it's over done, because it makes things so hard to see.

I wonder if you can play GBA games from a flash card with a modification. Have key components (other than the slot of course) for the GBA backward compatibility been stripped?

« on: April 05, 2009, 12:27:13 AM »
None of my friends seemed bothered by it, but when I asked "What if it was called a Chink Cookie?" they suddenly got my point.

Chinese isn't spelled with a K. You can't spell Japanese without Jap.

The word "Jap" is racist.

It sounds wrong, because it IS wrong.

In your opinion. Words don't have the same meaning in every culture.

What I didn't expect to see was people actually defending the use of the word!

You didn't expect people to not all have the same culture and opinion as you?

if it's offensive to a certain group of people, we should strive to not say it, right?

Not everyone has the same culture. Avoiding thousands of words because someone, somewhere, determines it to be derogatory in their opinion and culture is ridiculous, in my opinion.

I'm confused, someone says, "Hey, this term is construed as a racial slur by some people," and we're arguing that they are wrong?

I accept that the term may be used as a slur and would prefer not to offend people. I don't think anyone is arguing that people might use the abbreviation and not know what it means, of course that is going to happen, I think the point is that you should be cognizant of the term and know not to use it because some people might take offense. Why is this so complicated?

The discussion is about stating as fact that a word is derogatory, when it clearly is culturally subjective.

Next thing I know I'll have some white guy telling me I can't refer to my own people as orientals.

Anyone remember the arcade game "Brave Firefighters"? That game came out in 1999...

That game was awesome. That game is the only reason I'm interested in this one. Hopefully it will be just as fun.

I wonder what fans will pay attention to the most...if the game actually delivers in all fronts or if its a solid seller.

The popularity.

« on: July 30, 2008, 05:55:50 AM »
RF wireless works because it uses a USB devices connected to the computer/wii.  If it uses one of those, then the device it's connected to  it doesn't even know it's a wireless keyboard, it just knows it's a keyboard.  It will work.

Would a Bluetooth adaptor work for Bluetooth keyboards/mice?

What devices does the Wii allow to connect to it via Bluetooth? I wonder if any other Bluetooth or RF wireless devices will work.

This may just be a plain old keyboard that is Wii branded and with the price jacked up, like they do with the ethernet cables.

Capcom could do it. Even those screenshots don't look impossible, Tuxedo Bond. Good skinning can easily negate notice of low poly models. Furthermore, coding in a progressive, distance-based level of detail would hardly be a big deal and have been used in games for over a decade now.

Besides, any game engine designed with displaying many characters on screen at once will most likely be properly coded to do so. Look at Serious Sam. That game still looks pretty good today, yet would easily run on even modest systems back when it was initially released. You could always expect to see tons of enemies at any given time, all in ridiculously wide-open areas.

I was referencing this comment:

The only thing that can hold this game back from looking and playing exactly like the 360 version is laziness on the part of Capcom.

They could do the things you mentioned, but it wouldn't be visually exactly the same anymore.

Dead Rising wasn't a particularly beautiful or detailed game. The Wii is more than capable of handling MANY zombies on the screen at once. Remember, Nintendo had the Gamecube doing such things before it even released. Given that the Wii happens to be even stronger, there is no reason why this can't be accomplished.

The only thing that can hold this game back from looking and playing exactly like the 360 version is laziness on the part of Capcom.

I knew you would bring up the GameCube, and probably be referring to Pikmin in particular. Pikmin 1&2 did have over 100 characters on screen at once, however the Pikmin models appeared to be relatively basic in comparison.

Some of the screen shots from Famitsu have quite a few enemies on-screen (particularly the one with the chain saw on the first page).  However, since I'm not overly familiar with the original, I can't say how it compares.

Here are some examples of how many characters can be on screen at once while shooting, driving, and slicing zombies, while still maintaining a smooth framerate (most of the time) in the Xbox 360 version.

Hopefully this game will prove the Wii can handle the same games the 360 and PS3 can which will open the door to more multi-platform titles in addition to the expected exclusives. The majority of the 360/PS3's extra power goes to HD graphics anyway. So taking away the HD and maybe lowering the textures and polygon count a little if necessary should make this and any other title playable on the Wii with the unique controls making up for the compromised graphics which won't even be all that noticeable on a standard television.

I see no reason RE5 can't appear on the Wii as well. It's really nothing but RE4 with HD graphics.

Don't count on it. Dead Rising has fairly large environments capable of having at least a hundred zombies on screen at once without slowdown from what I remember. So even considering it will be low-res, I'm pretty certain that unless they really push the Wii hardware, which at this point in it's lifespan and considering the philosophy of developers to just shove some Wii controls in a game and expecting it to sell, I wouldn't assume the game will look and perform graphically close.

I'm not sure if the increase in size is justified. SuperNES games came in at MUCH lower sizes... I'm not sure that OGG music and additional frames are worth it in what is essentially a puzzle game.

Apples and oranges...

Would you rather the game have MIDI's as audio and 8 bit era sprites to decrease the size?

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Announces Wii MotionPlus
« on: July 14, 2008, 06:07:16 PM »
And how much more money will you have to give Nintendo for this thing? Imagine spending MSRP $40 Wiimote + $20 nunchuck + MotionPlus = ? SIGH.

I get the feeling this is to solve the limitation with the IR sensing. When you hold the Wiimote upright like a baseball bat, the infrared sensor is pointing up and is not usable, and thus cannot detect where you are in the room. I'm not sure why you would need this unless you will be playing a game in a large room without the Nunchuck, and you need this to detect where you are at all times the IR sensor can't be used, getting us a little bit closer to virtual reality.

Actually, the real reason for this is to be strapped on to our other joystick while playing a simulator of sorts... you know, so when things are pointing up, it can still detect.

But I'm a wannabe badass about Square games!

"wannabe badass." I like that. That's your new nickname.  8)

A 3 hour game for $10 is the same time to price ratio as a 15 hour game for $50, and those are pretty common.

But considering you can get a game like No More Heroes for under $20 bucks new(if you look around), it makes you think...

I hope the price drops in the future, but considering the nature of the distribution, I doubt it will happen soon.

Unsafe levels? All lead is unsafe...

What they don't tell you is the "safe" levels are not much lower.

Besides eating them, you can absorb the poison by touching them as it gets on your hands, and then you rub your eyes and stuff.

But yeah... just don't lick them and you'll be mostly OK.
