TalkBack / Re: Wii Successor Could Use Flash Memory and 25GB Discs
« on: May 03, 2011, 03:45:09 PM »
I think people are jumping the gun here. People complained/gloated for years that the Wii didn't output in HD. Nintendo claimed it wasn't HD because there wasn't enough market penetration on HD televisions yet. Fast forward a few years, and Microsoft stops including HD cables out of the box with the XBox because internal surveys discovered that only something like 10% of users were actually even using HD cables or utilizing them correctly with TV settings to make it actually make a difference. My point with this is that HD was, and to an extent still is, a talking point. True, 3rd parties got pissy about it and for the most part stopped bothering with ports, but that was really more of a hardware issue. If the Wii could have produced the graphical output of Gears of War in SD, I don't think the HD red herring would have mattered.

So with this potential storage kerfuffle: Sounds like the 8 gigs onboard is indeed probably for game caching, and that the main storage solution will be an SD card slot. People are saying that this will screw up DLC allotment and downloadable game sizes, ect. On the first point, I agree that the SuperWii could miss some DLC. But how many people actually care about DLC outside of core enthusiasts? I'd wager most people aren't necessarily even aware of it most of the time. I have a 360 and I've never bought DLC, partly because I think it's a bullshit business practice, but mostly because very little of it seems appealing or worthwhile. Likewise I have never downloaded a full game. I'd really rather own the disc for sentimental and resell value, and I think most consumers are still in this position. As a result, my 120 G harddrive has barely been scratched. I've tried downloading games from disc to the console, but wasn't able to detect any difference in load times or anything, so I desisted. I have downloaded a few games from Arcade, but these haven't been particularly large, and with the strict low-size requirements on the Wii gone, I don't see why any download-only games wouldn't work on SuperWii.

So, while collectively these issues might be a probably to a segment of heavy usage enthusiasts, big picture I don't think the average consumer is going to care, and that's Nintendo's bottom line. I wouldn't consider myself an average consumer, and this information still isn't making me bat an eye.

This was the first RPG I played through. I liked it so much I, erm, acquired a version of FF V, but lost interest halfway through due to the game kind of sucking and having a bad class system. I then borrowed FF VII for PC from a friend, and gave up on it after the first disk, due to the game kind of sucking and having a bad class system. (Also, it was ugly as hell.) So anyway, in conclusion, FF VI is the best FF.

Didn't Nintendo file a patent at some point with a screen-controller mock-up very similar to the rumors circulating now? Could that be the source of the rumor, true or not?

Yeah, I coincidentally walked by this thing last night and considered going in, but it was just too damn cold. Funnily enough, it was on the exact spot that the The Rent's Too Damn High Guy had set up at a number of weeks ago.

Gonna have to concur, this is maybe the game I've replayed most of anything, ever. There's something incredibly addicting about the medal system and skill-based path-branching that hasn't been matched to this day. I was hoping the new Sin and Punishment would get there, but unfortunately it was a little too hard/J-core for my tastes. I will always regret never being able to get the medal on Sector Z.

I remember Bomberman Hero only being playable because 3D games were still kind of novel. Same goes with Legend of the Mystical Ninja.

Eh, I don't think the game was all that hard. Definitely not as hard as Mario Bros. 2 JP. It was refreshing to find a game where the final boss actually took a number of tries to beat. And, after playing through the game on mirror mode, "normal" feels like a cakewalk. (One of the hardest things ever was beating Jagged Jewels on Mirror). Also, I don't think it was cheap at any point, I just think the designers went to great lengths to keep you off rhythm.

I agree with the sentiment that we don't need another sequel. They pretty much squeezed the stone dry on level design with this go-round. All they could do with a sequel is add more personality (the bongos got nothing on the Kremlings), add more interactivity to the map a la DKC3, and introduce a full-on lost world. That, and toss in more animal friends and underwater levels.

Did anyone check out the unlockable concept art? It seemed from those stills that Retro had a water world planned, as well as a more extensive Golden Temple world that looked awesome.

I'm all about Super Paper Mario's parodic elements. The joke is on the player, because the joke is always on the player as far as games are concerned. I read something about how videogames are ultimately limited as an art form, because the finger always just ends up pointing blankly back at the player. SPM is the first game I've played that acknowledges and incorporates this. No More Heroes might count as well, but that's more of an El Topo to Super Paper Mario's Satyricon.

Yeah, it took me over half the game to really "get" the puzzle/action interaction, but once I did it was awesome. Still hard as hell, but it feels like a glorious challenge. All those seemingly arbitrary incremental upgrades you can buy suddenly start to make a tangible difference every time.

Hatsworth is maybe the best game on the DS. I found the puzzle mechanics kind of dull and intrusive throughout the first parts of the game, but by the end, my god, what an experience. Also, if you think main Hatsworth is hard, try some of the later hidden levels. Totally nuts. I usually hate "stress" games, but this one was so good I powered through.

TalkBack / Re: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Review
« on: November 17, 2010, 11:06:15 AM »
I've played through both on the Wii. Part 2 is definitely worse. The core combat is fine, but damaged by the absurd lack of enemy variety and interesting boss battles that livened up the first game. The art design is also leagues behind the first game. The first levels in Kamino and that upside down city are alright, but from there on out you spend almost the entire rest of the game running around pointlessly in the inside of a ship of indeterminate size and function. It's super ugly and repetitive. And then at the end you get to . . . go back to Kamino.

It's actually kind of a shame this game wasn't better, as the clones are a persistent major problem in the Star Wars universe. It would make total sense and really elevate the Force Unleashed property if they used it to wipe out all of the clones/cloning ability of the empire and had it count for the canon. Then it would make sense that there aren't any more clones in the original trilogy. I think that was implied in FU II, but the story is so lousy that could just be supposition.

TalkBack / Re: Fils-Aime: 'Other M Should Be a Million Unit Title'
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:21:39 PM »
I agree that Other M deserved to sell poorly because it was a misconceived piece of junk. It didn't even look good, as for some reason many reviews claimed as a saving grace. I almost couldn't believe it when I saw those ridiculous lava men for the first time. Really, some of the worst art design I've ever seen in a flagship title from Nintendo.

Like movie reviews, however, I don't think the press ratings had any effect on the sales outcome. The Jaws videogame was a million seller. So is Carnival Games. The Wii is five years old, and despite the raw sales numbers most people who own the console never bought a second game for it. Thems the breaks. The true injustice is that games that were among the best of the generation (looking at you Zack and Wiki and Little King's Story) fizzled. This is partly due to the Wii's core appeal and partly due to the way the video game industry has changed. But, unlike the Hollywood paradigm that the megapublishers are trying so hard to emulate, the video game industry has not figured out a way to create space for niche or independent games outside of $10 downloadable Wiiware or Xbox Live titles. Other M is just a rare case of individual justice aligning with universal injustice. Kind of like recent Tom Cruise movies!

TalkBack / Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns Impressions
« on: September 23, 2010, 01:29:34 AM »
Hark! Anyone remember me from back in the day? Probably not.

Anyhow, that Donkey Kong Country thing about the most secret room is NOT a glitch.

You had one chance, on that one industrial level, to purposefully choose all single bananas in a barrel matching secret room. IF you for some reason did that, a barrel would drop instead of a banana, which you could then use to break through the wall of the bonus room, into a super secret bonus room, which was the only way to get 100%. This only worked on the first try, but this was intentional.

Sounds ridiculous? It was! The only way you could possibly know about that was if your were a Nintendo Power subscriber and they sent you the promotional VHS tape in the mail that included the secret of how to get 100%. It was a marketing gimmick.
