CAPCOM UNVEILS CLASSIC ACE ATTORNEY® SERIES FOR WiiWare

The beloved Ace Attorney series featuring the most exciting courtroom dramas of the digital decade are headed to Nintendo's popular download service in 2010

SAN MATEO, Calif. — November 18, 2009 — Capcom Entertainment, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that three classic Ace Attorney® games are scheduled for digital release on NintendoÂ’s WiiWare next year beginning with the one that started it all, Phoenix Wright™: Ace Attorney® followed by Phoenix Wright™ Ace Attorney®: JUSTICE FOR ALL, and Phoenix Wright™ Ace Attorney®: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS. Gamers can expect the deliberations to begin January 2010. These games will cost 1,000 Wii Points, $10.00 USD.

Ace AttorneyÂ’s massive popularity and appeal in Japan has caught on in the West and the franchise has now sold well over 3.7 million units worldwide. For the first time ever, this beloved handheld series is making an appearance on a home console, giving gamers access to three of the classic Ace Attorney adventures from the comfort of their own living rooms. Fans and newcomers alike will have a chance to star as the most popular defense attorney in videogames, Phoenix Wright – a man driven by principles and his ability to separate fact from dubious fiction. Each game in the series presents twisting storylines and intriguing gameplay with comical anime stylings. Players will collect evidence, weed through inconsistent testimonies and overcome corrupt agendas to ensure that justice prevails! Present evidence with the wave of the Wii remote or press suspicious testimonies by wiggling it. These games can be played via single-player and has multiple save slots.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Episode 1 through 4) is the first release hitting in January. The story kicks off with Phoenix Wright defending his childhood friend Larry Butz from a murder charge. But this is only the beginning drama for the tenacious legal eagle as Wright faces unexpected tragedies that will test the limits of his incredible deductive prowess. In May, owners of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will be able to download the bonus episode that appeared in the original Nintendo DS™ version of the game. It will cost 100 Wii Points.

In March, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: JUSTICE FOR ALL arrives. Phoenix Wright has six months experience and five court victories under his belt. But none of that will do him any good against the ruthless new D.A. in town. Franziska von Karma wants revenge and she's ready to take Phoenix down at any cost!

In May, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS arrives. Phoenix will face the toughest prosecutor yet as the mysterious hard-boiled “Godot” is gunning for him with extreme prejudice. Get ready for the most intense courtroom standoffs of Phoenix Wright’s career!

Ok, on the upside these certainly are good games (if "games" is the right word) and it's good that the Wii audience is going to get another crack at these.

On the downside, c'mon Capcom I know you're fond of ridiculous franchise milking but was it really necessary to re-release these barely-altered-for-DS GBA games on WiiWare?  And why WiiWare when DSiWare would be a rather appropriate choice for porting a handheld game?  On that subject, are they going to even attempt to redraw these games for the higher-resolution Wii or are these going to be direct ports of the low-res DS art?  Why not create a new Phoenix Wright game for WiiWare?  The old adventures are GBA games and there's pretty much nothing the Wii can add to them in terms of functionality that the DS versions didn't already marginally add.

In the end, more Phoenix Wright is always good and Capcom isn't gouging fans as much as you'd think they would, but it's still an underwhelming announcement.

Well, they're making that Miles Edgeworth game and it's a DS retail game. Why would you make a game WiiWare when it can be sold at retail for MUCH more money to a MUCH larger audience?

Well, if you're going to make a game in the older style of Phoenix Wright (which at best have a shoestring budget), you could easily make a new Phoenix Wright game on WiiWare with a small team and turn a nice profit without having to commit the kind of resources required for a full retail DS game.  Imagine an episodic Phoenix Wright WiiWare series, which would work really well on the service!  Besides, if Perfect Prosecutor takes off Capcom might not want to distract from the new direction they're taking that series with a new retail DS game in the old style.

I don't think there's anything wrong with this, as long as it's clear that the game isn't really anything aside from the GBA titles.  They're being offered for a premium price, so why not do it?  I see it as a good method to undercut the used games market, as well, so I'm definitely not opposed.  As far as I'm aware, Ace Attorney titles haven't depreciated in value very much since they first appeared on the second-hand market, though I could be mistaken.

The games aren't meant for you.  If you own a DS you (should) have already played these games.  Believe it or not, not everyone with a Wii has a DS.

Capcom is pretty well known for porting their games to every platform they can.  It just sucks because we get jack **** from Capcom otherwise.  I could be fine with this if we got more from them.  But we don't.  Street Fighter and the real Resident Evil are on the other consoles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you own another console?  Quit complaining.

That doesn't make things okay.  So I shouldn't care about Wii third party support anymore because it no longer personally affects me?  I'm still a Wii owner and Capcom is still treating Wii owners like crap and that's bullshit.

Gamecube got RE4 as an exclusive.

Then it went to the PS2 and was accounced two months before it's release date.

The only irony I can find in that is Clover left Capcom shortly after that and Okami. Being a money-hungry company hurts.

I would say yes.   It's too bad clover went on to self destruct, but at least the promise was carried out.

pont of fact : lending out video games to good friends ususally means you will never see said game again.

I don't really have any comments about these being re-releases since I've never played the series.
I might get one since I'm curious about it, but which one is the best? Any opinions?

Well, I would say wait for the series.  The series beginnings were a little pale and they got better with each game.  Number 3 is the place to start by far.  Then, of course Ace Attorney (number 4) was just awesome.

I loved Apollo's cast. They completely ruined Phoenix though, as a character (he was basically saved in the last act though).

I would say yes.   It's too bad Capcom made clover self destruct, but at least the promise was carried out.

This move makes a lot of sense to me. the Ace Attorney games are on a LOT of platforms, at least in Japan. However, making the series available on a console makes a lot of sense. Instead of hunching over a small screen for hours and hurting your wrists, you can comfortably play these games on your TV. Win!
