Great review, finished by one of the most cringe worthy jokes I've ever seen on the internet. Bravo.

Good review Neal. I always enjoy your thoughtful content. And just because I can't resist being "that guy":

So it's almost as good as Gris?

Great review. I made a similar comment to this on Donald's review, but I think it's worth pointing out here as well.

This game is not really a strategy game; it's a puzzle game like Tetris or Meteos. You don't play it to finish it. You play it because the mechanics are fun and it's challenging. Instead of an endless stage progression and a high score, you get to unlock a new hero or some new items.

I think this concept is key in understanding what this game is. Don't play it to beat it. Play it to enjoy it.

Thanks for the review, Donald. After spending most of yesterday with the game, I think your score is fair.

One thing I wanted to point out in case people are curious about this game is that I don't think it's a strategy game. It's a puzzle game with rogue-like elements thrown in. The skeletons are like puyo puyo pieces, tetriminoes, etc. Each one has to be hit a number of times (stamina) before damage can be done to them, and the player has to figure out how to manage his players that can hit once, twice, or three times in order to efficiently damage the skeletons.

Once I viewed the game this way, it clicked for me. I don't expect a perfect run out of Tetris. The randomness will get you eventually. Has-Been Heroes is the same. If you are into puzzle games, this one is excellent.

Great review! We all know a 9.5 from current-day Neal is equivalent to an 11 from any other reviewer. I'm hyped!

TalkBack / Re: On Punch-Out!! And Review Scores

This is an interesting topic for discussion.  Would you still give Mario Kart 8 the same score you gave it?  I know not as much time has passed, but I like that you acknowledge that review scores are greatly influenced by the reviewer's attitudes.  And readers should always take that into account.

Good show guys. Glad to hear more MK8 discussion from Neal. I hope I like it more than you did! Only time will tell.

Just one little nit to pick. The comparison of the gating of unlockables in MK8 was useful, but I cringed each time an unlockable was described as "tangible." Nothing in video game software is tangible. I can't touch any of the unlockables. A more accurate descriptor might have been "worthwhile." I completely understood what you were trying to convey, so it's not a big deal. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Zach is absolutely right. Talkback still serves a purpose, and I think we all welcome constructive criticism, fact-checking, and especially further discussion from those readers who have played the game. This is an unusual situation in which Nintendo facilitated reviews being published well before the game'a release. People who don't like the outcome here have come armed with the phantom sword of other people's opinions to fight in a proxy war of words. We can only defend our editorial integrity, and most of you can only assume that you won't agree with every word of Neal and Daan's reviews once you play it yourselves. Rather than ask questions of those who do have the game, you arrive with attacks predicated upon your own ignorance. Get bent.

I'm honestly shocked by the thin skin demonstrated by the staff of this site. Outside of a few mean spirited comments, most of what has been said has started as constructive criticism of the review. Instead of engaging in an intelligent discussion of the review process and acknowledging some flaws in this review, the staffers have spoke with a single voice in protecting their friend from the "bullies" attacking Neal. I hoped for a more mature response.

Most people who commented here did not come to burn Neal in effigy. I have respect for Neal, but I have issues with the approach of this review. I couldn't care less if he gave the game a 2 or a 20. I wanted to discuss the optimal way that games should be evaluated. It's not too late to take this discussion in a more constructive direction.

In contrast to his defenders on staff, Neal has taken the criticism very humbly. He has responded by answering a few questions and has resisted the urge to fire back. Kudos to you, Neal. I already had respect for you, and that has only increased.

I've been listening for years now, and I knew that this day would eventually come.  Thanks to Greg for putting in so many hours to make this show great.  I'm impressed that you held on to that grueling schedule for so long.

The absence of your insight, wit, and professionalism will leave a void, but thank you so much for being a part of our lives each week.  I have written into the show as Chris from Chicago several times, and I was always most interested to hear what you had to say about my emails, since our taste in games is similar.

Enjoy your weekends!  You have definitely earned some time for yourself.  I hope to hear from you again in the future through some other medium.

Go Bills!

I completely agree.  This is Chris from Chicago, the guy who gave M&M a shout out.  Don't pass it over, Jonny!  You can find it for $15 these days, and it is well worth that price.  This game is my new Tetris.  I have played through it 4 times now, and I just discovered some new strategies on my fourth playthrough.  If anyone is on the fence about this one, take the plunge!

Listening to the podcast right now--just wanted to say that I think that Jonny has given up on M&M:CofH too soon.  I played PQ (actually, ironically, based on Jonny's recommendation way back when) and it has been my go-to-game when I don't have anything new on the DS.  I also love M&M and find it to be an overall different experience that has echoes of PQ, but is, on the whole, much more fresh and intellectual.  I am nearing the end and am already looking forward to starting it again.  If only there were some way to demo... <sigh>  Don't bypass M&M for fear that it will be too much like PQ.
