And Event Mode has returned, as if anyone doubted it. Some of these look pretty cool, like destroying all the terrain in Skyworld, or playing as Yoshi and getting both opponents in eggs at the same time.

TalkBack / RE: Study: 46% of Retailers Sell M-Rated Games to Minors

They most certainly should not amend the constitution and restrict freedom of speech for something as trivial as this. I applaud retailers for enacting policies to require ID and not sell M rated games to people under 17, but the government shouldn't have the kind of power necessary for the kind of legislation they're going for.

Bender's Big Score completely lived up to the greatness of the series and sets the bar high for the three (hopefully more) that will follow it. Hilarious, a great story, and 500% of your recommended daily allowance of in-joke references to the series. My fear that it would lose its greatness in its return has changed into my not being able to wait for the next one. Anyone who was a fan of the series needs to get the DVD when it comes out Tuesday and watch it, I give you my double-your-money-back guarantee that it is amazing.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: So, is the Wii Zapper worth getting?

Okay, then this is whoring out the Zelda franchise. It isn't the first time, even if Four Swords itself wasn't, Tetra/Navi Trackers was. So what? As you said, they've done it with Mario forever. Did you ever once during Galaxy say or think "This is great, but it would have been so much better if Nintendo had never made Mario Party!"? How does the whoring in any way diminish the consistent greatness of the mainline games in Nintendo's series? If the answer is, and I think it is, "it doesn't", then who cares if they whore out the franchises from time to time, especially considering that we usually get a good game out of it?

Super Mario Sunshine=Super Mario Bros. 2 (aka Doki Doki Panic): Considered the black sheep of the family due to quirks some love, others hate. Still has a following.

Super Mario Galaxy=Super Mario Bros. 3: Takes the design of the first game, adds its own charm and creates a near perfect masterpiece.

It's weird how well those parallels fit the games. I agree with this post. This also means that the next Mario will be like SMW and be really great but disappointing in how it's unable to live up to the magic of its predecessor. If Mashiro insists on bashing OoT then I'm bringing this discussion back

1up reviewed this game. Here's a summary: Wahh! This is too hard! That's the only real negative they touched on in the review. They gave the game a 5 because they suck at it.

But like I said in my first post, Nintendo ISN'T the parent of these children, so they shouldn't feel obligated to assume the role of one.

But like somebody else said in an above post (and like my rambling half-joking post you quoted is trying to say) Nintendo isn't doing this to protect the children, they're doing this to avoid bad publicity and losing sales that would result from them being abducted (or whatever) in a way that involves the WFC.

That was exactly my train of thought when I read this, and I think it's the most likely explanation. If it is what they're doing it increases my optimism regarding RS2; they could have easily cut corners by reusing the same engine, but this would mean they put real thought and effort into the sequel.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Packaging Wii Sports- Not Good For Software Sales.
« on: November 22, 2007, 04:59:19 PM »
The Wii wouldn't have sold this well without Wii Sports as a pack-in. And the casual gamers who bought one and got one of the lame ports you mentioned probably wouldn't have gone back and gotten something else, they probably would have given up on the Wii and had negative opinions of it which they would have shared with other potential Wii owners who might then decide against it.

You should start your own religion. That way you get to make up the rules, take whatever days off you feel like by declaring them religious holidays (the feast of Maximum Occupancy), and, if you have a good enough accountant, never pay taxes again.

It's clunky, it's not streamlined, it's not intuitive, and it's unnecessary.

I shouldn't have to put in a separate Friend Code for each game I buy. I should be able to see whenever any of my friends are playing any game at all, even one that's not online, and send them an invite to play a match with me. I should be able to select a friend and join a game that they're in. I should be able to TALK to my friends over Wi-fi.

It IS a problem, it IS hindering online play, and it IS preventing Nintendo from competing with 360 in the online gaming market.

Everything you said there is true. As I pointed out, Nintendo knows that people hate the system and they have for quite some time now. I doubt that complaining more will change Nintendo's mind at this point. On the plus side, we actually have online play this generation, and if Brawl is any indicator, Nintendo is trying to improve its online offerings.

Actually it just came to me why Nintendo likes the system the way it is. First off, to call Mario Strikers Charged and Battalion Wars 2 lackluster loses you any credibility at all.

Second, yes friend codes are annoying and stupid, especially with individual codes for each game, but they aren't nearly as bad as you make them out to be. And if you hate them so much why don't you just play random matches? If it matters to you that much that you play a specific person then entering 12 digits shouldn't be too much of a problem. They suck, but I doubt they'll change; Nintendo has had tons of negative feedback since the first Wi-Fi-enabled DS games which were out nearly a year before the Wii, if they were going to change because of it they would have done so by now.

Opening up the VC to any kind of sharing or resale would allow for all kinds of abuse of the system and cost Nintendo tons of money; sure it would be cool but we can't expect Nintendo to make a really bad business decision here and then call it a major mistake when they don't. And the second suggested miss isn't Nintendo's fault, and all of their games look at least good.

1) It's less linear.
2) It doesn't force you to sit through boring cut-scenes.
3) It has less throw-backs to the previous games (so there's more room for its own special breed of magic).

Your second point proves you weren't lying, after the opening cut-scene there really aren't any more, at least that I've seen. Numbers 1 and 3 are really subjective, because I think those are reasons why Galaxy is better than 64. The imposed linearity of Galaxy lets it be more of a platformer and less of an adventure, bringing the series back closer to its 2D roots which I think is definitely a good thing, and Galaxy is able to do its own thing while throwing out tons of awesome nostalgic references to the series' past; it definitely has its own distinct magic.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Link's Crossbow Training Full Size case cover...
« on: November 20, 2007, 09:54:34 PM »
These are pretty easy to do, you just need Legal sized paper and make sure to set your printer to the highest quality setting, and a steady scissor hand. I've done this for both GC Zelda bonus discs and Wii Sports, and you get some pretty cool results. I'm glad I ordered the 5 pack of Wii game cases when I was doing Wii Sports, I was able to also do a Wii Sports case for my friend and replace a beat up case that a used game I bought came in, and now this.

The ONLY issue I have with the game is that its very easy. The game isn't afraid to give you a lot of lives and it generally grabs you by the hand and leads you to the very end. Even the bosses are quite simple as long as you know what you are doing. It does, however, provide a mild challenge with the extra galaxies as well as the comets.

Keep playing because it get pretty challenging later on.  Some of the comet challenges in the later galaxies are crazy and will require you to be a master of all of Mario's moves.  Not to mention you will die several times since some of the challenges pretty much require you to memorize the stage pretty well before being able to complete them.

Anyone that says the game is too easy after collecting all the stars is a huge liar.  Either that or the only Mario game they should ever play is the Japanese version of Bros 2 since that is the only Mario game that will satisfy their demand for an insane god like difficulty.

I make the claim because you can have more than 10 lives before you even complete the first two galaxies. Getting lives was not this easy in the older Mario games. Clearly they want gamers to have as many tries as possible by making the 1up mushrooms easier to get. It was the same way in New Super Mario Bros. for the DS.

I'll see if the difficulty does ramp up a bit when you go farther into the game.

It doesn't matter if you have lives, what matters is how often you die. You mentioned New Super Mario Bros., I barely died at all while playing that, but in Galaxy I've died quite a bit, at least in comparison. The whole lives thing shouldn't matter, this is a game where there's no such thing as a Game Over, you can always continue on and keep trying, so why arbitrarily force people back to the title screen?

Unless Sony has changed policy without me hearing about it, those are definitely Shipped numbers. Sony's numbers are always units shipped.

Naomi. I'm sure it appeared in arcades, but I think by that point Sega had a more advanced version of the Naomi hardware.

A Super Famicom/Super Nintendo style Classic Controller would be significantly better for SNES games that use the shoulder buttons. Having to press all the way in and click the shoulder buttons on the current model is annoying. And I'm sure that the SMG soundtrack will appear on bittorrent once it comes out.

As if there weren't enough cool things available from Club Nintendo as it was, they're coming two at a time now.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/835/835801p1.html
http://club.nintendo.jp/rank2007/index.html

First up is a Wii Classic Controller that looks exactly like a Super Famicom controller, followed up by a 2-disc 81-song fully orchestrated Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack. Come on, NoA, the infrastructure's in place with MyNintendo, give us some of this stuff!

This is an unexpected yet cool feature. I also think it would be cool to be able to watch friends. Just to torture everyone who hadn't thought of this, assuming there is no way to watch friedns: an NWR tournament where you could watch the other matches when you aren't fighting to see how it's going and who you would play next.
